  • We have evaluated the application of spectroscopy using an insertion-type fiber-optic probe and a sensor at wavelengths from 400 to 1,100 nm to the measurement of milk fat content on dairy farms. The internal reflectance ratios of 183 milk samples were determined with a fiber-optic spectrophotometer at 5$^{\circ}C$, 20$^{\circ}C$ and 40$^{\circ}C$. Partial least squares (PLS) regression was used to develop calibration models for the milk fat. The best accuracy of determination was found for an equation that was obtained using smoothed internal reflectance data and three PLS factors at 20$^{\circ}C$. The correlation coefficients between predicted and reference milk fat at 5$^{\circ}C$, 20$^{\circ}C$ and 40$^{\circ}C$ were r=0.753, r=0.796 and r=0.783, respectively. The predictive explained variances ($Q^2$) of the final model, moreover, were more than 0.550 at all temperatures, and the regression coefficients of determination ($R^2$) were more than 0.6 (60%). Our results indicate that milk has different internal reflectance measured in the range of visible and near infrared wavelengths (400 to 1,100 nm), depending on its fat content.

  • Purpose: The purpose of the study was to examine the impact of self-efficacy in the prevention of sexually transmitted diseases (STD), knowledge of and susceptibility to STD, and the role of gender in sexual autonomy. Methods: Data were collected from 267 college students using self-report questionnaires during the period from the first to the twentieth of June 2015. Data were analyzed using $x^2$ test, Fisher's exact test, t-test, Pearson correlation coefficients, simple and multiple regression techniques with the PASW/WIN 20.0 program. Mediation analysis was performed according to the Baron and Kenny method and Sobel test. Results: In male students, self-efficacy for STD prevention showed a full mediating effect in the relationship between STD susceptibility and sexual autonomy (${\beta}$=-.08, p=.370). But in female students, it had a partial mediating effect (${\beta}$=-.25, p=.001). And self-efficacy for STD prevention showed partial mediating effects in the relationship between knowledge of STD and sexual autonomy in the both male (${\beta}$=.25, p=.005) and female students (${\beta}$=.33, p<.001). Conclusion: To enhance college students' sexual autonomy, it may be useful to build effective strategies enhancing students' knowledge about and susceptibility to STD and to develop a self-efficacy promotion program for college students.

  • This experiment was carried out to investigate the effects of physico-chemical properties of soil on the growth of Chamaecyparis obtusa and to apply the results to such rational forest management as yield forecast and selection of suitable species for a given forest stand. The soil properties observed in this experiment were soil pH, exchangeable pH organic matter, total nitrogen, available $P_2O_5$, cation exchange capacity, exchangeable $H^+$, total base and base saturation. Diameter at breast height (DBH), height and volume growth of C. obtusa were observed at 78 sampling sites. Data were processed into the following series for the analysis of multivariates : inner correlation matrix, multiple correlation coefficients, regression coefficients and partial correlation coefficients. The results are summerized as follows : 1. Multiple correlation coefficients between soil properties and DBH of C. obtusa were .364 for 20-year trees, resulting less efficient for estimating the growth of C. obtusa. However, total base, soil pH and base saturation were considerable characters for better estimation. 2. More efficient multiple correlation coefficients were observed between soil properties and height growth than those between soil properties and DBH, showing .443 for 20-year trees and factors affecting the height growth were similar to those of DBH. 3. Extremely low values of multiple correlation coefficients were estimated between physico-chemical properties of soil and volume growth of C. obtusa resulting low efficient estimation. However, total base contributed highly to volume growth of C. obtusa. Accordingly the most contributable factor for estimating the growth of C. obtusa were total base, soil pH and base saturation. Consequently, these results can be effective for selecting of the reforesting site, and less effective for estimating the growth of C. obtusa.

  • In this paper. a key frame extraction algorithm for browsing and searching the summary of a video is proposed. Toward this end, important frames representing a shot are selected according to the correlations among frames. by using the Fourier descriptor which is useful for the shot boundary detection. To quantitatively evaluate the importance of selected frames. a new measure based on correlation coefficients of frames is proposed. If there are several frames with a same importance. another criteria is introduced to break the tie. by computing the partial moment of subframes including each candidate key frame so that the distortion rate is minimized Since a key frame extraction algorithm can be evaluated subjectively. the performance of the proposed algorithm has been verified by a statistical test. Experiments show that more than 20% improvement has been obtained by the proposed algorithm compared to existing methods.

  • The theory of microlocal analysis of hyperbolic partial differential equations shows that the energy density associated to their high-frequency solutions satisfies transport equations, or radiative transfer equations for randomly heterogeneous materials with correlation lengths comparable to the (small) wavelength. The main limitation to the existing developments is the consideration of boundary or interface conditions for the energy and power flow densities. This paper deals with the high-frequency transport regime in coupled heterogeneous structures. An analytical model for the derivation of high-frequency power flow reflection/transmission coefficients at a beam or a plate junction is proposed. These results may be used in subsequent computations to solve numerically the transport equations for coupled systems, including interface conditions. Applications of this research concern the prediction of the transient response of slender structures impacted by acoustic or mechanical shocks.

  • Melamine is a chemical intermediate to manufacture amino resins and plastics, which cannot be used as food additive since it can cause kidney stones. A qualitative determination method of melamine residue in powdered and liquid milk was developed using Fourier transform infrared (FTIR) spectroscopic technique. The calibration sets consisted of 21 standard melamine solutions, in which 1% trichloroacetic acid aqueous solution and acetonitrile (3:1, v/v) were used as solvent. The model was validated using 10 standard melamine solutions which were unused to build up the calibration set. Infrared (IR) absorbance peaks specific to almost all chemical groups in melamine molecule were shown in the spectral range between 1,100 and 1,800/cm. Combined partial least squares (PLS)-$2^{nd}$ derivative calibration model coupled with mean centering (MC) mathematical enhancement showed the highest correlation coefficients ($R^2$>0.99). In brief, the FTIR technique can be used for quantitative analysis of melamine in milk samples.

  • This study is a replication of Clemente and Sturgis' study conducted among 600 American cities in 1972. The impact of population size, physical density, social density, and age of 56 Korean cities upon the extent of their industrial diversification was analyzed. Hypotheses concerning each independent variable were generated from the theory of the development of the division of labor proposed by Durkheim and subsequently adopted by human ecologists. Zero-order correlation analysis and regression analysis were employed to test the hypotheses. The standardized partial regression coefficients indicated that social density and age of cities exert significant positive impact upon industrial diversification. On the other hand, population size showed a significant negative impact upon industrial diversification. In addition, it was discovered that the combined influence of the independent variables account for 34.6 percent of the variation in industrial diversification. The findings of this study were compared with the results of Clemente and Sturgis' study. Some suggestions for future research are presented and discussed.

  • A six parent dialled analysis was conducted to get basic information for improving yield of upland cotton. Heterosis, combining ability, genetic components and correlation coefficients for boll length, boll width, boll weight, 100 seed weight, lint weigth per boll and lint percentage were studied. Estimates of heterosis for all characters and heterobeltiosis for boll weight and lint weight per boll showed positive values. In general combining ability effect, 'Muan' and 'Imsung' showed highely positive effect in all characters. In specific combining ability effect, the combinations of 'Seungju${\times}$Imsung$.$Seosan${\times}$Imsung' for bll length, 'Cheju${\times}$Imsung$.$Seung${\times}$Imsung' for boll width, 'Cheju${\times}$Muan$.$Cheju${\times}$Imsung' for boll weight, 'Cheju${\times}$Soonchun$.$Muan${\times}$Imsung' for 100 seed weight, 'Soonchun${\times}$Muan' for lint weight per boll and 'Soonchun${\times}$Seosan$.$Seungju${\times}$Muan' for lint percentage showed highly positive effect. Partial dominance was observed for boll length, boll weight, 100 seed weight and lint weight per boll, complete dominance for boll width and overdominance for lint percentage. The number of effective gene group was estimated as one for all characters. The estimates of narrow and broad sense heritabilities were high for all characters except as one for all characters. The estimates of narrow and broad sense heritabilities were high for all characters except lint percentage. Correlation coefficients among the boll length, boll width, boll weight, 100 seed weight and lint weight per boll were positive, whereas lint percentage was negatively correlated with other characters.
