Correlation analysis of human urinary metabolites related to gender and obesity using NMR-based metabolic profiling

  • Metabolomic studies using human urine have shown that human metabolism is altered by a variety of environmental, cultural, and physiological factors. Comprehensive information about normal human metabolite profiles is necessary for accurate clinical diagnosis of disease and for disease prevention and treatment. In this study, metabolite correlation analyses, using $^1H$ nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) spectroscopy coupled with multivariate statistics, were performed on human urine to compare metabolic differences based on gender and/or obesity in healthy human subjects. First, we applied partial least squares discriminant analysis to the NMR spectral data set to verify the data's ability to discriminate by gender and obesity. Then, the differences in metabolite-metabolite correlation between male and female, and between normal and high body mass index (obese) subjects were investigated through pairwise correlations. Creatine and several metabolites, including isoleucine, trans-aconitate, and trimethylamine N-oxide (TMAO), exhibited different quantitative relationships depending on gender. Dimethylamine had a different correlation with glycine and TMAO, based on gender. The correlation of TMAO with amino acids was considerably lower in obese, compared to normal, subjects. We expect that the results will shed light on the metabolic pathways of healthy humans and will assist in the accurate diagnosis of human disease.

Partial Confinement Utilization for Rectangular Concrete Columns Subjected to Biaxial Bending and Axial Compression

  • The prediction of the actual ultimate capacity of confined concrete columns requires partial confinement utilization under eccentric loading. This is attributed to the reduction in compression zone compared to columns under pure axial compression. Modern codes and standards are introducing the need to perform extreme event analysis under static loads. There has been a number of studies that focused on the analysis and testing of concentric columns. On the other hand, the augmentation of compressive strength due to partial confinement has not been treated before. The higher eccentricity causes smaller confined concrete region in compression yielding smaller increase in strength of concrete. Accordingly, the ultimate eccentric confined strength is gradually reduced from the fully confined value $f_{cc}$ (at zero eccentricity) to the unconfined value $f^{\prime}_c$ (at infinite eccentricity) as a function of the ratio of compression area to total area of each eccentricity. This approach is used to implement an adaptive Mander model for analyzing eccentrically loaded columns. Generalization of the 3D moment of area approach is implemented based on proportional loading, fiber model and the secant stiffness approach, in an incremental-iterative numerical procedure to achieve the equilibrium path of $P-{\varepsilon}$ and $M-{\varphi}$ response up to failure. This numerical analysis is adapted to assess the confining effect in rectangular columns confined with conventional lateral steel. This analysis is validated against experimental data found in the literature showing good correlation to the partial confinement model while rendering the full confinement treatment unsafe.

인용 분석을 통한 학문간 회색문헌의 활용도 비교 연구 (A Comparative Study on Usability of Grey Literature among Sciences, Using Citation Analysis)

  • 이 연구에서는 학문분야별 연구자들이 연구를 수행하는 과정에서 참고하는 주요 정보원을 자료 형태별로, 그리고 7개 학문분야별로 비교. 분석해 보고 이 가운데 회색문헌에 대한 학문 분야별로 선호도에서 어떠한 차이가 있는가를 인용분석을 통하여 확인해 보았다. 분석결과 연구자들의 회색문헌과 백색문헌에 대한 선호도가 분야별로 차이가 나타났으며, 분야와 상관없이 국내에서 발간되는 국, 영문 학술지 사이에서도 그 선호도에 차이가 발견되었다. 또한 동일한 분야 내에서 영문학술지와 국문학술지 사이에 인용된 문헌에 대한 회색문헌과 백색문헌의 두 집단 간에도 선호도 차이가 있음을 보였다. 마지막으로 분야와 언어 변수를 통제한 후 자료 형태별로 편상관계수 값을 통하여 분석한 결과 회의록 자료와 기타자료 사이의 편상관계수 값이 타 형태의 자료에 비해 높은 것으로 나타나 회의록 자료를 많이 인용한 논문은 기타자료도 동시에 인용하는 경향이 있음을 보여 주었다.

Relationship between Obesity and Dental Caries in Some University Students: A Pilot Study

  • Background: Obesity and dental caries have common risk factors such as food intake, eating habits, and lifestyle. Nevertheless, there has been no consensus on the significant association between obesity and dental caries, and additional studies are needed. We investigated the relationship between obesity and dental caries in some college students in this pilot study. Methods: Forty-two obese college students (body mass index [BMI]≥25) registered at a University Obesity Clinic and 19 normal students (18.5≤BMI<25) were recruited. Oral examinations were conducted, and anthropometric data and blood samples were collected. The blood concentrations of low-density lipoprotein (LDL), high-density lipoprotein, and triglyceride were also measured. After controlling for dental plaque index, a univariate analysis of dental caries indicators related to obesity was performed; partial correlation analysis was also conducted. A nonparametric test was used for the analysis of gender-related trends due to the limited number of participants. Results: The obese group had significantly fewer missing teeth (p=0.014), missing surfaces (p=0.035), filled surfaces (p=0.038), and decayed-missing-filled surfaces (p=0.020) than the normal group. There was no difference between the males in the normal and obese groups. The females in the obese group had significantly fewer missing teeth (p=0.003), missing surfaces (p=0.003), and decayed-missing-filled surfaces (p=0.046). Partial correlation analysis showed a weak negative correlation (r=-0.256) between the blood LDL concentration and decayed-missing-filled teeth. The other obesity and dental caries indicators were not correlated. Conclusion:The blood cholesterol concentration had a negative relationship with dental caries, and there were fewer cases of dental caries in the obese group in this study. However, it is important to clarify the relationship between obesity and dental caries through a dietary survey or additional investigations considering other confounding factors.

상호상관법에 의한 간질 초점부 피질뇌파 전파의 가시화 (Visualization of propagating process in the seizure discharge by use of cross-correlation analysis)

  • 뇌파 기록은 난치성 간질 환자인 성인을 대상으로 하였다. 경막하 전극으로 부터 기록된 피질뇌파를 위상차해석에 의해서 간질 초점의 동정 및 발작파 전파의 가시화를 행하였다. 발작파의 세밀한 시간변화를 조사하기 위해서 자기 회귀모델, 웨이브렛해석을 이용하여 발작파 성분을 구하고, 상호상관법에 의해 각 전극 간의 위상차를 해석했다. 그 결과, 발작파의 초점은 적어도 2종류가 존재하였고, 각각의 전파방법도 달랐다. 이로 부터 발작파의 출현 기구는 동시에 적어도 2종류 존재하는 것을 확인할 수 있었다. 또한, 발작파 출현의 변화를 경시적으로 해석할 수 있기 때문에 발작파 전파의 가시화에 유효하다고 생각되어 진다.

광섬유 센서를 이용한 부분방전 측정연구 (A Study on Partial Discharge Measurement using Optical Fiber Sensors)

  • In this paper, an optical fiber sensor(OF sensor) utilizing the principal of Mach-Zehnder interferometer were proposed to detect the partial discharge signals in insulating oil. At first the AC breakdown signals were detected to check the response of the OF sensor. The detected signals from OF sensor was consistent with that from current probe. After the response checking, simultaneous measurements and continuous recording were made of electrical and the OF sensor signals from partial discharge(PD) produced by IEC(b) electrode system immersed in insulating oil. The continuous recording made it possible to extract basic quantities of PD from the OF sensor signals, such as pulse phase and pulse amplitude distribution. Through the signal analysis, the absolute peaks of the OF sensor PD signal was found to be increased with the amplitude of electrical signals, and these results mean that there is a strong correlation between OF sensor and electrical PD signals. It was demonstrated that the OF sensor in this research had a possibility to detect the PD signals in power apparatus.

  • This paper presents a diagnostic technique using ultrasonic for operating power transformer. Two methods are used as a base for detecting a partial discharge. One is a analysis of PD trend using counted ultrasonic signal, the other is a estimation of PD location source using cross-correlation. In this paper we implement detection equipment of partial discharge in power transformer. The desired system is utilized to two methods for PD detection and operated by graphical user interface(GUI). The results of test showed that the system can be adopted to real power transformer.

  • The purpose of this study is to find specific service quality factors of enterprises that can maximize the perception of banks' services to users of commercial banks in China, and to establish empirically how these quality factors affect the bank's image. They also want to verify the impact of the positive image of the bank on the user's satisfaction and the willingness to use the bank's services. For empirical verification of this study, questionnaires will be used to customers who have used the services of each of the four commercial banks in China, and the survey was conducted. The collected data were analyzed using the SPSS using statistical techniques such as Cronbach' ${\alpha}$, Investigative Factor Analysis, Reliability Analysis, Correlation Analysis, Regression and Difference Verification. The results of the verification were summarized below. First, the quality of service of commercial banks has a partial positive effect on the bank's image. Second, the image of a commercial bank has a positive effect on customer satisfaction. Third, the image of a commercial bank has a positive effect on the purpose of use. Fourth, the image of commercial banks has a partial mediated effect between service quality and customer satisfaction. Fifth, the image of a commercial bank has a partial mediated effect between the quality of service and its intended use.

Relationship between hematologic parameters related to systemic inflammation and insulin resistance-associated metabolic parameters in women with polycystic ovary syndrome

  • Objective: The aim of the present study was to evaluate the associations between hematologic parameters related to systemic inflammation and insulin resistance-associated metabolic parameters in women with polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS). Methods: Eighty-two women between the ages of 18 and 35 years who were diagnosed with PCOS were included in this study. A 2-hour 75-g oral glucose tolerance test (OGTT) was administered to all study participants; fasting and postprandial glucose and insulin levels were measured simultaneously during the 2-hour OGTT. Hematologic parameters were derived from a standard complete blood count and a differential count of fasting-state blood samples. The correlations between hematologic parameters and insulin resistance-associated clinical and metabolic parameters were evaluated using the Spearman rank correlation and partial correlation coefficients. Hematologic parameters related to systemic inflammation were compared between the two groups, categorized by the presence or absence of insulin resistance. Results: Significant differences in the absolute neutrophil count, absolute monocyte count, platelet count, and neutrophil-lymphocyte ratio were found between the insulin-resistant group and insulin-nonresistant group. Correlation analysis found that all hematological parameters, except for the platelet-lymphocyte ratio, were associated with at least one insulin resistance-associated metabolic parameter. However, these significant correlations between hematological and metabolic parameters were attenuated after controlling for the effects of other covariates using partial correlation analysis. Conclusion: The association between hematologic parameters indicative of systemic inflammation and insulin resistance-associated metabolic parameters seems to be strongly influenced by other anthropometric covariates in women with PCOS.

국가R&D사업 효율성 분석의 개선 방법 (Improvement Method for Efficiency Analysis in National R&D Programs)

  • The government expands its investment on R&D programs for economic growth, thus there is growing attention on the result of R&D Programs. This study proposes more improved measuring method for efficiency when the number of R&D programs is not enough to be for measuring efficiency analysis. It provides more various application method of factors on efficiency analysis. This study analyzes the influence of each input factor on efficiency by using partial efficiency concept. And it also determines input factors in similar influence throughout Spearman correlation coefficient. Finally, it suggests new method to improve discriminatory power of efficiency analysis by determining representative factors. Also, the proposed method can be practiced not only for national R&D programs, but also for other fields of research.
