This study was intended to analyze the behavioral patterns of family members at home and to grasp the housing needs of dual-earner families nursing preschoolers, and to suggest the planning of apartment house unit. The survey method was used for data collection. The questionnaire consisted of 31 questions. The subjects were the wives who had full-time jobs and reared children 0-5 years old. The subjects were randomly selected at three-childcare centers in Daejeon and Cheongju. The data was collected from $5^{th}$∼$25^{th}$ July, 2002. 115 cases were analyzed using the SPSS Window 10.0 package. The findings from this study could suggest the apartment house planning for dual-earner families nursing preschoolers. It is necessary that the planners consider relationships of children's room with their parents room. A flexible and exchangeable plan to accommodate the need for growing children was desired. The children's room has to be located near their parents room when the children are babyhood. And then for privacy of family members, when their children go to the elementary school, children's room has to be moved to other space to be separated from their parents room. small.
The purpose of this study was to examine the effects of parenting behavior and peer interaction on externalizing problem behaviors of preschoolers. The data of 953 49~55 month old preschoolers and their parents were extracted from the Korean Children Panel Survey of Child-Care Policy Research Institute(2012). This study was conducted with Structural Equation Modeling(SEM). The results of this study were as follows. First, parenting behavior had a direct influence on externalizing problem behaviors of preschoolers. Second, parenting behavior had a direct influence on preschoolers' peer interaction. Third, preschoolers' peer interaction had a direct influence on externalizing problem behaviors of preschoolers. Fourth, preschoolers' peer interaction had mediating effects on the relationship between parenting behavior and externalizing problem behaviors of preschoolers.
This study was conducted to determine parents' recognition of the Center for children's foodservice management (CCFSM) and to compare preschoolers' satisfaction for meals served by childcare centers and some aspects regarding the vegetable intake according to the parents' recognition of CCFSM. The subjects were 255 parents, whose children were 2~5 year old and attended a childcare center, were grouped according to the recognition of CCFSM (high recognition, HR, 27.5%; medium recognition, MR, 47.4%; low recognition, LR, 25.1%). Information was obtained by a self-administered questionnaire and data were analyzed by SPSS 25.0. Only 58.6% of HR and 10.7% of MR answered the they had participated education/event held by the CCFSM. More parents in the HR group (88.6%) acknowledged the helpfulness of CCFSM on the children's food habits compared to those in the MR group (63.6%) (P<0.001). Compared to the MR and LR groups, more parents in the HR group answered not only that they were 'satisfied'/'very satisfied' with the meals served by childcare centers (P<0.05), but also they tended to think that their children were also satisfied (P=0.061). Up to 31.2% of parents in the LR group answered that there was no need for education to increase the vegetable intake of their child compared to 14.3% and 17.4% in the HR and MR groups, respectively (P<0.05). Moreover, up to 26.6% of parents answered that school cook planned menus compared to 5.7% and 13.2% in the HR and MR group, respectively (P<0.001). In conclusion, the results provided the association between parents' high recognition of CCFSM and preschoolers' satisfaction for meals from childcare centers as well as a better chance for a desirable food life regarding vegetable intake.
This study examined the relations between parents' reactions to their preschool child's negative emotions, coping styles, and peer acceptance. Subjects were 250 5-year-old preschoolers and their parents. Instruments were the Coping with children's Negative Emotions Scale, and coding strategies checklist and peer rating scales for children. Data were analyzed with the SPSS PC + program. Parent's emotion-focused reactions, encouragement of expression and problem-focused reactions were positively associated with both peer acceptance and child coping styles whereas parent's distress, and punitive and minimizing reactions were associated with lower Peer acceptance and child coping styles of venting, denial, aggressive action, and avoidance. In child coping styles, problem solving was positively associated with peer acceptance while aggressive action anti venting were associated with a lower level of peer acceptance. Problem solving tended to be positively associated with peer acceptance, whereas aggressive action and venting tended to be associated with lower level of peer acceptance. (4) There was a statistically significant relations among parent's reactions to preschoolers' negative emotions, preschoolers' coping styles, and peer acceptance. There were the positive relations among parent's supportive reactions preschoolers' coping styles of problem solving and seeking support, and peer acceptance.
Purpose: This study examined the literature concerning the burdens of parents of preschool-aged children diagnosed with type 1 diabetes mellitus. Methods: We employed an integrative review methodology based on Whittemore and Knafl's framework. The literature search was conducted using the Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic Reviews and Meta-Analyses guidelines across four electronic databases: PubMed, Web of Science, the Cumulative Index to Nursing Allied Health Literature (CINAHL), and PsycINFO. Ultimately, 18 articles were included in the review. Results: The review yielded four themes: (1) parental burdens, (2) factors related to the burdens, (3) coping strategies, and (4) implications for clinical practice. Parents experienced psychological, physical, and social burdens due to the diabetes care of their children. Several factors influenced burdens, including child-related characteristics such as age, severity of diabetes, and hospitalization experience, as well as parental factors like family income, race, and residential area. Parents initially felt burdened when their child was diagnosed with type 1 diabetes, but over time, they often adapted to the situation through support and sharing of responsibilities. Parents desired education and interventions reflecting the unique characteristics of preschoolers. Conclusion: This integrative literature review revealed that parents experience numerous burdens when their child is diagnosed with diabetes. Future research should focus on developing interventions to address parents' psychological difficulties, including tracking parental psychological changes over time. Tailored nursing interventions should also be provided to parents of preschool-aged children, as opposed to the more generic nursing interventions traditionally applied across all age groups of children in clinical settings.
The purpose of this study is to validate the Play Participation Attitude Scale for parents of preschoolers, which was developed by the Delphi survey. 447 parents of 9 daycare centers in Seoul and Incheon were recruited for this study and, finally, data from 339 parents were used to perform exploratory factor analysis, confirmatory factor analysis, correlation analysis, multiple regression analysis, and reliability analysis. The results of the study are as follows. First, factor analyses revealed that the global fit of the sensitively play (7 items), responsively play (6 items), and delightfully play(7 items) three-factor model was good. Second, the internal consistency of the Play Participation Attitude Scale was good. Third, there was a statistically significant positive correlation between the current scale and the parents' playfulness scale, indicating concurrent validity. Finally, higher scores of the Play Participation Attitude Scale and its three factors significantly predicted lower scores of parenting stress and higher scores of the preschoolers' self-control ability. These findings revealed that this new measure to be both valid and reliable and specifically suggests what kind of attitude is appropriate for parents to adopt when participating in preschoolers' play.
BACKGROUND/OBJECTIVES: This study aimed to assess the dietary behaviors of preschool children using the nutrition quotient for preschoolers (NQ-P) and analyzed the difference in the scores of the children's dietary behaviors in regards to the parents' health consciousness. SUBJECTS/METHODS: The subjects were 257 children aged 3-5 years and their parents residing in Seoul and Gyeonggi-do, South Korea. The questionnaire is composed of demographic characteristics, the NQ-P questions, and health consciousness. All data were statistically analyzed by SPSS program (ver. 25.0) and the statistical differences in variables were evaluated by χ2 test, Fisher's exact test, t-test, 1-way analysis of variance and Tukey's multiple comparison test. RESULTS: There was a significant difference on the intake frequency of processed meat by region and fast foods by age, region, and weight status (P < 0.05). There was also a significant difference in not moving around while eating by weight status and parents' effort to have healthy eating habits by sex (P < 0.05). The mean score of NQ-P of the total subjects was 59.47, which was within the medium-low grade. The mean score of balance was 61.62, and the boys were significantly higher than girls (P < 0.05). As the age of children increased, the mean score of the moderation was significantly decreased (P < 0.05). The scores of NQ-P (P < 0.05), balance (P < 0.01), and environment (P < 0.05) were significantly higher in the high group of parents' health consciousness than the low group. CONCLUSIONS: According to the results of the evaluation by NQ-P, the dietary behaviors of preschoolers residing in Seoul and Gyeonggi-do need to be improved. For improving their eating behavior and nutritional health status, parents and children need customized nutrition education programs based on sex, age, region and weight status of preschool children as well as the degree of parents' health consciousness.
This study aims to clarify the regional role, usage status, and evaluation of various outdoor destinations, such as parks and plazas. For preschoolers and their parents, who spend relatively limited time with their children, outdoor playgrounds such as parks are valuable places. This study discusses the characteristics of such places in each region. Forty five parents from Setagaya-ku, To-kyo, and Tama City were part of the study. The results were organized by region using photographs, positions, evaluations, and description information from the parks by the caption evaluation method to find the most effective placement of these areas.
The purpose of this study was to design an interactive multimedia nutrition education program for preschoolers. Computer technology provides the opportunity to explore new and creative methods of delivering nutrition education to pre-schoolers. If this method is effective, more preschoolers can be reached with accurate and consistent nutrition education with less time and teaching staff. This program is a computer-based multimedia nutrition education program for pre-schoolers based on the Dick and Carey (Dick & Carey 2001) model of instructional design which includes analysis, design, development, and evaluation. The overall instructional goal was based on the needs of the target population. The needs assessment was a self-administered survey distributed to 1,426 parents of preschoolers, focusing on the need for preschoolers' nutrition education. The results of the survey indicated that parents wanted their children to learn reasons for eating nutritious food. Therefore, a program titled 'Nutrition Exploration' was developed with the instructional goal of teaching preschoolers the 5 Food Groups. To achieve this goal, the preschoolers were engaged in a game. They could earn colored jewels by completing the game in five sessions. The story line was that people living in a peaceful kingdom become sick after they lose the jewels. The learner takes an adventurous journey through five different countries to retrieve the jewels. These countries are 'Giwoon nahrah' (foods containing carbohydrates, such as rice and potatoes), 'Sangsang nahrah' (foods that are rich in vitamins and minerals, such as vegetables and fruits), 'Sooksook nahrah' (calcium-con-taming products such as milk), 'Teunteun nahrah' (protein-containing foods such as meat and fish) , and 'Gakeum nahrah' (products with high sugar and fat content, such as instant foods and soda). The learner who obtains five jewels in five different countries can save the kingdom. For the program to be effective and efficient, the multimedia had to be easy for the preschooler to enter, use, and exit. The verbal instructions enhanced child autonomy, and the program was developmentally appropriate so that the young child could easily manipulate the software. This research provides the basis for the continued development of computer-based nutrition education materials.
This study developed and validated a 'Parent-child Lexical Interaction Scale for Preschoolers (PLIS-P)'. First, we developed the preliminary scale with 7 factors after reviewing previous literature related to vocabulary and literacy instruction for young children and reflected on feedback from child studies experts and mothers with young children. Subsequently, to validate the scale, the online survey was conducted on mothers with 5-to 6-year-old children who live in Seoul, Gyeonggi, Incheon, Gyeongsang, Chungcheong, Jeolla, Gangwon, and Jeju. Responses from 309 mothers were used to conduct exploratory and confirmatory factor analysis and correlation analysis. The results were as follows. First, the result of exploratory analysis showed that the model with 7 factors was satisfactory: (1) vocabulary exposure, (2) word elaboration, (3) scaffolding, (4) play activity, (5) conventional instruction, (6) word type awareness instruction, (7) word morphology instruction. Second, confirmatory factor analysis confirmed the good fit of the model. Third, the concurrent validity was confirmed by correlation analysis using EC-HOME. Last, the internal consistency reliability of each factor of PLIS-P was also confirmed. This study developed both a theoretical framework of parent-child lexical interaction and a Parent-child Lexical Interaction Scale for Preschoolers. This scale can be used by parents, practitioners, and researchers to acquire knowledge about interaction related to words between Korean parents and young children.
