  • Chromium exists at various valences, including elemental, trivalent, and hexavalent chromium, and undergoes reduction-oxidation reactions in the environment. Since hexavalent chromium is known as a human carcinogen, it is most important to evaluate the oxidationreduction characteristics of the hexavalent chromium species. Although hexavalent chromium can be reduced to trivalent state, the detailed information on this in workplace environments is limited. The purpose of this study was to investigate hexavalent chromium reduction in time in various conditions. A pilot chrome plating operation was prepared and operated in a laboratory for this study. There was evidence that the hexavalent chromium was reduced by time after mist generation. The percentage ratio (with 95% confidence intervals in parentheses) of hexavalent chromium to total chromium was almost 100% (99.1 ; 102.3) immediately after mist generation, and was reduced to 87.4% (84.8 ; 89.9) at 1 hour and 81.0% (78.3 ; 83.5) at 2 hours, respectively. Another test indicated that hexavalent chromium collected on PVC filters was also reduced by time after sampling. Hexavalent chromium was reduced to 90.8% (88.2 ; 93.3) at 2 hours after sampling. It also was found that hexavalent chromium was reduced during storage in air. It is recommended that air samples of hexavalent chromium be protected against reduction during storage.

  • The purpose of this study is to analyze the issues resulted from the process of grouping KORMARC records using FRBR WORK concept and to suggest a new method. The previous studies did not sufficiently address the criteria or processes for identifying representative authors of records and their derivatives. Therefore, our study focused on devising a method of identifying the representative author when there are multiple contributors in a work. The study developed a method of identifying representative authors using an author role dictionary constructed by extracting role-terms from the statement of responsibility field (245). We also designed another way to group records as a work by calculating similarity measures of authors and titles. The accuracy rate of WORK grouping was the highest when blank spaces, parentheses, and controling processes were removed from titles and the measured similarity rates of authors and titles were higher than 80 percent. This was an experiment study where we developed an author-role dictionary that can be utilized in selecting a representative author and measured the similarity rate of authors and titles in order to achieve effective WORK grouping of KORMARC records. The future study will attempt to devise a way to improve the similarity measure of titles, incorporate FRBR Group 1 entities such as expression, manifestation and item data into the algorithm, and a method of improving the algorithm by utilizing other forms of MARC data that are widely used in Korea.

  • The purpose of this paper is to show the clustering trend and the empirical comparison and to choose the clustering ports for 3 Korean ports(Busan, Incheon and Gwangyang Ports) by using the Fuzzy(Average Index Transformation) DEA and Cross-efficiency models for 38 Asian ports during 11 years(2001-2011) with 4 input variables(birth length, depth, total area, and number of crane) and 1 output variable(container TEU). The main empirical results of this paper are as follows. First, clustering results by using Fuzzy(AIT)DEA show that 3 Korean ports[Busan(56.29%), Incheon(57.96%), and Gwangyang(66.80%) each]can increase the efficiency. Second, according to Cross-efficiency model, Busan(Hongkong, Kobe, Manila, Singapore, and Kaosiung etc.), Incheon(Aquaba, Dammam, Karachi, Mohammad Byin Oasim and Davao), and Gwangyang(Damman, Yokohama, Nogoya, Keelong, Kaosiung, and Bangkok) should be clustered with those ports in parentheses. Third, when both Fuzzy(AIT)DEA and Cross-efficiency models are mixed, the empirical result shows that 3 Korean ports[Busan(71.38%), Incheon(103.89%), and Gwangyang(168.55%) each]can increase the efficiency. The efficiency ranking comparison among the three models by using Wilcoxon Signed-rank Test was matched with the average level of 66%-67%. The policy implication of this paper is that Korean port policy planner should introduce the Fuzzy(AIT)DEA, and Cross-efficiency models with the mixed two models when clustering is needed among the Asian ports for enhancing the efficiency of inputs and outputs. Also, the results of SWOT analysis among the clustering ports should be considered.

  • Newborn dog chymosin was extracted from the stomachs of dogs of 2 weeks of age, and was purified by ion exchange chromatography. Half of the sequence was determined by amino acid sequencing and the complete sequence was deduced from a cloned chymosin cDNA Results showed that the zymogen showed 79% sequence identity with calf prochymosin and 54% identity with porcine pepsinogen A The size of the propart and location of the residue which becomes the amino-terminus in the active enzyme was the same in the prochymosins. The maximum general proteolytic activity at pH 3.2 of newborn dog chymosin was 3-4% of that of porcine pepsin A at pH 2, whereas the milk clotting activity relative to the general proteolytic activity of newborn dog chymosin was much higher than that of calf chymosin. Agar gel electrophoresis at pH 5.2 of stomach extracts of individual dogs showed the existence of two predominant genetic variants of zymogen and enzyme. The two variants could not be distinguished by amino acid composition or amino-terminal sequencing, and no differences in the enzymatic properties of the genetic variants were observed. It was concluded that of the residues that participate in the substrate binding, calf and newborn dog chymosin differ in the following positions (porcine pepsin numbering, subsites in parentheses) : Ser 12 Thr(S$_4$), Leu 30 Val(S$_1$/S$_3$), His 74 Gln(S'$_2$), Val 111 Ile(S$_1$/S$_3$), Lys 220 Met(S$_4$). With regard to the low general proteolytic activity of newborn dog chymosin, the substitution Asp303 Val relative to calf chymosin may contribute to an explanation of this.

  • HNS accidents involve large-scale fires and explosions, causing numerous human casualties and extreme environmental pollution in the surrounding area. The widespread diffusion of effects should be prevented through rapid decision making. In this study, a high-quality, standardized, and digitized HNS accident databases has been generated based on the HNS standard code proposed. Furthermore, the HNS Accident Tracking System (HATS) was applied and implemented to allow for systematic integration management and sharing. In addition, statistical analysis was performed on 76 cases of domestic HNS accident data collected over 23 years using HATS. In Korea, an average of 3.3 HNS accidents occurred each year and major HNS accident factors were Springs (41 %), Aprons (51 %), Chemical Carriers (49 %), Crew's Fault (45 %) and Xylenes (12 %). (The number in parentheses is the percentage of HNS accident factors for each HNS accident classification)

  • The purpose of this paper is to show the clustering trend and to choose the clustering ports for 3 Korean ports(Busan, Incheon and Gwangyang Ports) by using the self organizing maps based on neural network(SOM) and Tier models for 38 Asian ports during 11 years(2001-2011) with 4 input variables(birth length, depth, total area, and number of crane) and 1 output variable(container TEU). The main empirical results of this paper are as follows. First, clustering results by using SOM show that 3 Korean ports[Busan(26.5%), Incheon(13.05%), and Gwangyang(22.95%) each]can increase the efficiency. Second, according to Tier model, Busan(Hongkong, Sanghai, Manila, and Singapore), Incheon(Aden, Ningbo, Dabao, and Bangkog), and Gwangyang(Aden, Ningbo, Bangkog, Hipa, Dubai, and Guangzhou) should be clustered with those ports in parentheses. Third, when both SOM and Tier models are mixed, (1) efficiency improvement of Busan Port is greater than those of Incheon and Gwangyang ports. (2) Incheon port has shown the slow improvement during 2001-2007, but after 2008, improvement speed was high. (3) improvement level of Gwangyang port was high during 2001-2003, but after 2004, improvement level was constantly decreased. The policy implication of this paper is that Korean port policy planner should introduce the SOM, and Tier models with the mixed two models when clustering among the Asian ports for enhancing the efficiency of inputs and outputs.

  • This study was performed to find out the community structure of macrobenthos and the environmental factors around Munseom coastal water in Jeju Island from June to December, 2007. Mean temperature and mean salinity were $19.6^{\circ}C$ and 34.03 psu, indicating stable water masses. Concentrations of DO, COD and SS were as low as those in the standard sea-water-quality classes I. Chlorophyll a concentrations ranged from 0.40 to 1.09 mg/L (mean, 0.69 mg/L), and higher concentration was observed in December rather than in June due to a blooming in winter. The mean concentration (their ranges are in parentheses) of nitrate, phosphate, and silicate were 0.15 mg/L (0.073-0.264 mg/L), 0.01 mg/L (0.004-0.011 mg/L) and 0.23 mg/L (0.039-0.464 mg/L), respectively. The values were higher near the Munseom due to influxes from the land. Of the 112 species that were identified, 40 species (36.0%) were Mollusca; 33 (28.8%) were Cnidaria; 13 (11.7%) were Porifera; 8 (7.2%) were Arthropoda and 17 species (15.3%) were others including Echinodermata. Density and biomass were estimated to be 4,340 individual/$m^2$ and $53,107.8\;gwwt/m^2$ respectively. Anthozoa was the most dominant group in abundance ($2,132\;ind./m^2$) as well as in the number of species, whereas Cnidaria was predominant in biomass ($37,630.9\;gwwt/m^2$). The dominant species were Dendronephthya gigantea, Scleronephthya gracillimum, Anthoplexaura dimorpha, Dendronephthya castanea, Thecocarpus niger, Dendronephthya spinulosa, Dendronephthya putteri, and Acabaria bicolor in the depth of 10-30 m. The seasonal variations of the number of individual and biomass of Cnidaria and Mollusca were observed. There was a slow increment in June, a decrement in October, and a drastic increasing in December. The biodiversity, evenness and richness index in surveyed stations were 2.715-3.413 (H'), 0.758-0.851(E'), and 5.202-8.720 (R) respectively. The dominance index was the highest in station M2 and the lowest in station M1.
