Association of Chicken Growth Hormones and Insulin-like Growth Factor Gene Polymorphisms with Growth Performance and Carcass Traits in Thai Broilers

  • Molecular marker selection has been an acceptable tool in the acceleration of the genetic response of desired traits to improve production performance in chickens. The crossbreds from commercial parent stock (PS) broilers with four Thai synthetic breeds; Kaen Thong (KT), Khai Mook Esarn (KM), Soi Nin (SN), and Soi Pet (SP) were used to study the association among chicken growth hormones (cGH) and the insulin-like growth factor (IGF-I) genes for growth and carcass traits; for the purpose of developing a suitable terminal breeding program for Thai broilers. A total of 408 chickens of four Thai broiler lines were genotyped, using polymerase chain reaction-restriction fragment length polymorphism methods. The cGH gene was significantly associated with body weight at hatching; at 4, 6, 8, 10 weeks of age and with average daily gain (ADG); during 2 to 4, 4 to 6, 0 to 6, 0 to 8, and 0 to 10 weeks of age in $PS{\times}KM$ chickens. For $PS{\times}KT$ populations, cGH gene showed significant association with body weight at hatching, and ADG; during 8 to 10 weeks of age. The single nucleotide polymorphism variant confirmed that allele G has positive effects for body weight and ADG. Within carcass traits, cGH revealed a tentative association within the dressing percentage. For the IGF-I gene polymorphism, there were significant associations with body weight at hatching; at 2, 4, and 6 weeks of age and ADG; during 0 to 2, 4 to 6, and 0 to 6 weeks of age; in all of four Thai broiler populations. There were tentative associations of the IGF-I gene within the percentages of breast muscles and wings. Thus, cGH gene may be used as a candidate gene, to improve growth traits of Thai broilers.

  • 본 논문에서는 메시지 패싱 시스템에서의 태스크 스케줄링에 대해 다룬다. 병렬/분산 시스템의 어플리케이션의 태스크에 대한 적절한 스케줄링이 이루어지지 않는 경우, 병렬/분산 처리를 이용한 이득을 기대하기는 어렵기 때문에 이 주제에 대한 연구는 컴퓨터 아키텍처의 발달과 함께 지속되고 있으며, 많은 연구들이 태스크 스케줄링에 대한 다양한 기법들을 제안하고 있다. 기존의 연구들은 공유 메모리 시스템을 가정하여 이루어졌기 때문에, 메시지 패싱 시스템에 기존의 기법을 적용하기가 힘들다. 본 논문에서는 기존 연구의 모델과 메시지 패싱 시스템의 통신 모델의 차이점으로 발생하는 통신비용의 누적을 고려하여 리스트 스케줄링 기법에 기초한 개선된 우선 순위 함수와 새로운 프로세서 선택 기준을 제안한다. 이들 두 가지 제안을 적용한 태스크 스케줄링 기법은 통신비용의 누적을 고려하지 않아 발생하는 비효율적인 스케줄링을 개선한다.

Development and Evaluation of QTL-NILs for Grain Weight from an Interspecific Cross in Rice

  • In a previous study, we mapped 12 QTLs for 1,000 grain weight (TGW) in the 172 $BC_2F_2$ lines derived from a cross between Oryza sativa ssp. Japonica cv. Hwaseongbyeo and O. rufipogon. These QTLs explained 5.4 - 11.4% of the phenotypic variance for TGW. Marker-aided selection combined with backcrosses was employed to develop QTL-NILs for each QTL. $BC_2F_2$ lines with each target QTL were backcrossed to Hwaseongbyeo twice and then allowed to self to produce $BC_4F_5$ populations. SSR markers linked to TGW were employed to select QTL-NILs with the respective target QTL. Six QTL-NILs with the recurrent parent, Hwaseongbyeo were evaluated for nine traits for three years from 2007 and 2009. Differences were observed between each of the 6 QTL-NILs and Hwaseongbyeo in TGW. In addition to TGW, these QTL-NILs displayed differences in other agronomic traits possibly indicating a tight linkage of genes controlling these traits. The direction of the QTL for TGW in 6 QTL-NILs was consistent as in the $BC_2F_2$ lines from the same cross. Difference in TGW between each of the QTL-NILs and Hwaseongbyeo was associated with the difference in one or two grain shape traits; grain length, grain width, and grain thickness. SSR markers linked to the QTL for TGW will facilitate selection of the grain shape character in a breeding program to diversify grain shape and provide the foundation for map-based gene isolation. Also, the QTL-NILs developed in this report and the progenies from crosses between the QTL-NILs will be useful in clarifying epistatic interactions among QTLs for TGW.

분자표지를 활용한 고품질 가공용 고순도 무 품종 육성 (Development of highly uniform variety for processing using SSR markers in radish (Raphanus sativus L))

  • 무의 가공용 품종의 가공 수율이 현재 약 70%로 버리는 부분이 많아 뿌리의 형태가 가공에 유리하도록 상부와 하부의 굵기가 유사한 품종을 육성코자 하였으며 웅성불임을 이용하여 채종함으로 종자의 순도도 높이고자 본 연구를 실시하였다. 가공용 품종은 특히 순도가 높아야 하므로 계통 육성 과정에서 순계로 고정되었는지 여부를 확인하기 위해 표현형 뿐 아니라 분자표지를 활용하여 증식된 종자의 순도를 검정하였다. 우수 품종 육성을 위해 A친은 ('관동여름' ${\times}$ '계룡봄무')의 후대에서 위황병에 저항성이며 추대성이 늦고 고온기 재배에서 근비대성이 타 계통보다 양호한 담록수 계통을 고정하였고, B친은 ('태상왕' ${\times}$ '서울봄무')의 후대에서 위황병, 근류병에 저항성이며 잎색은 진한 녹색으로 청수색이 강하고 근비대성, 육질치밀성인 계통을 선발 고정하였다. 화분친(C친)은 개체선발법으로 세대를 진전하였으며 분리세대 순도검정을 위해 각 세대별로 종자 48점을 ACMP-490, cnu-316 프라이머를 이용하여 분석한 결과 분리 1 세대 ACMP-490은 64.6%, cnu-316은 66.7%의 고정율을 보였으며, 분리 2세대 ACMP-490은 68.8%, cnu-316은 70.8%의 고정율을 보였고, 분리 3 세대 ACMP-490은 93.8%, cnu-316은 100%의 고정율을 나타냈으며, 분리 4 세대 ACMP-490은 93.8%, cnu-316은 100%의 고정율을 보였고, 분리 5 세대 ACMP-490은 95.8%, cnu-316은 100%의 고정율을 보였고, 분리 6세대 ACMP-490은 100%, cnu-316은 100%의 고정율을 보여 원원종을 확보하였다. 고정이 확인된 계통을 이용하여 조합을 작성한 결과 뿌리의 형태가 가공에 적합하고 순도가 우수하여 이를 'YR 오래(YR ORE)'로 2011년에 품종보호 출원하여 2013년 신품종으로 등록 되었다(품종보호 제 4550호, 2013.06.10.).

Selection of Resistant Hybrids of Atractylis Against Phytophthora drechsleri

  • Bioassay techniques using young leaves and roots were developed to screen resistance of Atractylis spp. against Phytophthora drechsleri. Among 638 plants collected from various regions of Korea from 1994 to 1996, 67 were pre-screened in fields naturally infested with P. drechsleri, which is the causal pathogen of rhizome rot of Atractylis. Among the pre-screened sources, 18 (ca. 26.8%) were highly resistant to the pathogen in leaf inoculation. In the root inoculation test, abundant sporangia were formed in susceptible plant roots, while only a few or no sporangia were produced on the roots which were found resistant in the leaf inoculation test. Among the selected resistant plants, A. japonica 96066 and 96104 were used to cross with another species, A. macrocephala 96362 that showed high yield with good quality of rhizome but susceptible to the pathogen. The F$_1$hybrids designated as HA03 turned out to be resistant to the pathogen, indicating that resistant gene(s) was inherited. Among intra-species hybrids of A. japonica, HA07 and HA09 were resistant to the pathogen in leaf inoculation and moderate in root inoculation. However, HA08 was susceptible in both inoculation tests. This result suggests that the parent material might be genetically heterogeneous. Further genetic study should be carried out to verify this phenomenon.

Enhancement of Ethanol Tolerance of Lactose Assimilating Yeast Strain by Protoplast Fusion

  • In order to construct a yeast strain having high ethanol tolerance together with good lactose fermentation ability, the protoplast fusion using Saccharomyces cerevisiae STV 89 and Kluyveromyces fragilis CBS 397 was carried out. Auxotrophic mutants of K. fragilis were obtained as a selection marker by treatment of ethylmethane sulfonate. The best mutant for protoplast fusion was selected based on the capabilities of ${\beta}-galactosidase$ production and lactose fermentation. The protoplast fusion using polyethylene glycol and calcium chloride solution led to the fusion frequence of $3{\times}10^{-6}$ and a number of fusants were obtained. Among these fusants, a fusant F-3-19 showed the best results in terms of ethanol tolerance, ${\beta}-galactosidase$ activity and lactose fermentation. The performance of lactose fermentation and ethanol tolerance by this fusant were better than those of K. fragilis. Study on the ethanol tolerance having relation to fatty acid composition and intracellular ethanol concentration revealed that the fusant F-3-19 had a higher unsaturated fatty acids content and accumulated less amount of intracellular ethanol compared with a parent of K. fragilis.

Awareness of Adulterated Food and Its Management Beliefs and Capabilities among Teenagers' Parents

  • Food adulteration and food fraud should not be neglected. The present study aimed to investigate the awareness of adulterated food and its management beliefs and capabilities among teenagers' parents. Data were collected from 425 adolescents' parents having different levels of income and education. The results of factor analysis indicated that adulterated food management beliefs was classified into attitude, necessity, and anxiety. The adulterated food management capability was sub-grouped into hygiene and nutrition, knowledge, citizen action and environmental grasp. The adulterated food management capabilities were significantly different according child's school, education level and monthly income (p<0.05). The attitude factor of adulterated food management beliefs appeared to have a significant (p<0.05) impact on all factors of adulterated food management capabilities, however the necessity factor had a significant (p<0.001) impact only on factor of hygiene and nutrition. The results of the present study suggested that parents need to be aware themselves as well as to teach their children about right food selection and consumption. The findings of the study might be useful in government policy planning regarding the public health issues and dietary education of adolescents and parents.

  • Most of the works in Time Series Analysis are based on the Auto Regressive Integrated Moving Average (ARIMA) models presented by Box and Jeckins(1976). If the data exhibits no ap-parent deviation from stationarity and if it has rapidly decreasing autocorrelation function then a suitable ARIMA(p,q) model is fit to the given data. Selection of the orders of p and q is one of the crucial steps in Time Series Analysis. Most of the methods to determine p and q are based on the autocorrelation function and partial autocor-relation function as suggested by Box and Jenkins (1976). many new techniques have emerged in the literature and it is found that most of them are over very little use in determining the orders of p and q when both of them are non-zero. The Durbin-Levinson algorithm and Innovation algorithm (Brockwell and Davis 1987) are used as recur-sive methods for computing best linear predictors in an ARMA(p,q)model. These algorithms are modified to yield an effective method for ARMA model identification so that the values of order p and q can be determined from them. The new method is developed and its validity and usefulness is illustrated by many theoretical examples. This method can also be applied to an real world data.

Estimation of Crossbreeding Parameters for Serum Lysozyme Level in Broiler

  • The main objective of the present study is to estimate the crossbreeding parameters in respect to serum lysozyme level in broilers. The experiment involved a complete $4{\times}4$ diallel design using four synthetic broiler lines namely Coloured Synthetic Male Line (CSML), White Synthetic Male Line (WSML), Coloured Synthetic Female Line (CSFL) and Naked Neck Line (NNL). The lyophilised Micrococcus lysodeikticus suspension was used to detect the lysozyme level in the serum of birds. The data were analysed by least-squares method to find the effects of genetic and non-genetic factors using appropriate model. The crossbreeding parameters for this trait were estimated by complete diallel model assuming the effect of each synthetic line as fixed. The results indicated that additive and non-additive genetic variation attributed to minor genes at many loci is important for the genetic control of serum lysozyme level in chickens. Total non-additive components of variance also showed significant amount of heterosis in crossbred progenies, and therefore exploitation of non-additive component of variance is possible for improvement in serum lysozyme level in broilers. The overall results suggested that for commercial broiler production system, the selection for specialised line on the basis of serum lysozyme level and subsequent crossing of parent lines could enhance the immunocompetence status in relation to serum lysozyme level in crossbred chickens.

미혼남녀의 결혼관에 나타난 결혼 이데올로기 (Marriage-ideology Reflected on the View of Marriage of Unmarried Men and Women)

  • The purposes of this study were to find the general trends of marriage-ideology reflected on the view of marriage of unmarried men and women, to estimate the differences according to related variables and to investigate relation of variables and marriage-ideology. The samples were selected from the unmarried 164 men and 235 women living in Kwang-ju. The major findings were as follows; 1. Unmarried men and women didn't reveal high level of marriage-ideology but men's marriage-ideology scores were higher than women. The overall tendencies were that women's achievement of vicarious status was more imporant than that of personal status, marriage was the male-leading union and men's conditions of mate-selection must be superior than woman. Unmarried men and women usually did not accept equality between sex and they have strong gender-stereotype. In the view of sexuality, premarital viriginity and extramarital intercourse were more rigid with woman and they took a serious view of man-centered kinship. 2. Marriage-ideology were significantly different according to mother's age, necessity of marriage, motive of marriage, marriage taboo according to family origin, the eldest son's parent care-giving, a notion of preferring a son. 3. Men and women's marriage-ideology was positively related to variables. Especially, women's marriage-ideology had high relation to motive of marriage and a notion of preferring a son. But women's marriage-ideology was negatively related to educational level. (Korean J Human Ecology 1(1) : 27∼43, 1998)
