The aim of this study is to determine the species of parasites that affected the inhabitants of the city of Acre on the coast of the eastern Mediterranean during the Ottoman Period. This is the first archaeological study of parasites in the Ottoman Empire. We analysed sediment from a latrine dating to the early 1800s for the presence of helminth eggs and protozoan parasites which caused dysentery. The samples were examined using light microscopy and enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay (ELISA) kits. We found evidence for roundworm (Ascaris lumbricoides), whipworm (Trichuris trichiura), fish tapeworm (Dibothriocephalus sp.), Taenia tapeworm (Taenia sp.), lancet liver fluke (Dicrocoelium dendriticum), and the protozoa Giardia duodenalis and Entamoeba histolytica. The parasite taxa recovered demonstrate the breadth of species present in this coastal city. We consider the effect of Ottoman Period diet, culture, trade and sanitation upon risk of parasitism in this community living 200 years ago.
Monogeneans(Phylum Platyhelminthes) have been known as common parasites onto the skin and gills of cultured freshwater fishes. Infestation with these parasites result in a great loss in aquaculture industry. Some classification studies on these parasites have mostly been conducted in Japan but rarely in Korea. For the purpose of classifying monogenean parasites infesting two Korean freshwater fishes, eel (Anguilla japonica) and catfish(Parasilurus asotus), samples captured from March 1998 to April 2000 were examined. Here we report for the first time in Korea that four different species of monogeneans are identified: Pseudodactylogyrus bini and P. anguillae in eels; Ancylodiscoides infundibulovagina and Ancylodiscoides sp. in catfish.

Waterborne parasite infections are considered a reemerging threat. Most studies on the epidemiology of human cryptosporidiosis, giardiasis, and amebiasis have been carried out in developed countries, and there is little data on the occurrence of these infections in other areas. The objective of this study was to investigate the presence of waterborne parasites such as Cryptosporidium parvum, Giardia lamblia and Entamoeba histolytica in various water samples in Ankara, turkey. A total of 85 samples were examined, 43 from the municipal water supply, 34 from wells, 6 from the Ankara River, and 2 from two untreated dams; by conventional microscopy, immunologically and by polymerase chain reaction (PCR). Oocysts of C. parvum and cysts of G. lamblia were detected by using an indirect fluorescence (antigen) assay, whereas an enzyme linked immunosorbent assay was used to detect the cysts of E. histolytica and E. dispar. In addition, PCR was used for E. histolytica, E. dispar, C. parvum and G. lamblia detection. G. lamblia was found in 2 of the 34 well water samples, and parasites were found in 3 of the 6 Ankara River samples. The 1$\^$st/ contained E. histolytica cysts and Strongyloides stercoralis larvae. the 2$\^$nd/ E. histolytica cysts, and Trichuris trichiura eggs, and the 3$\^$rd/ C. parvum oocysts only. No parasite was observed in the municipal water samples and untreated dam water samples. These results extend our knowledge on waterborne parasites, such occurrence information on waterborne pathogens assists the management and treatment of municipal water.
In order to survey the prevalence of parasites in soil from playground in a detached dwelling area, 162 samples were taken from playground 54 unit. The survey was carried out during 3 months from july in 2000 to september in 2000. The results were obtained as follows : 1. Eggs of Toxocara canis were detected in 30 samples (18.5%) from 162 cases of playground. 2. The 3 kinds of eggs were isolated from the soil of playground. Those were Stronglyoides spp 23.5%, Toxocara canis 18.5% and Trichuris vulpis 4.3%. 3. It was mixed infestation such as single (74.5%), double (23.7%) and triple(1.6%).
To investigate the prevalence of swine internal parasitic infection, the fecal examinations were carried out between July. 1991. and June. 1992. The samples of 3, 126 swine feces and sawdust were collected from 6 sawdust fermentative and 6 cement-floored pigsties in Chonnam area. The results obtained were as follows. 1. The rate of swine internal parasitic infection, 38.5% from sawdust fermentative pigsty was higher than 22.2% from cement-floored pigsty. 2. Of the swine internal parasites detected, Balantidium cole, 21.4% from growing pig of sawdust fermentative pigsty, and 21.3% from sow of cement-floored pigsty was the must commonly encountered. The infection rate of another parasites including Trichuris suis in sawdust fermentative pigsty was also higher than cement-floored pigsty. 3. Larvae of Strongyloides ransomi was the highest infection rate (40.0%) at sawdust of the sawdust fermentative pigsty.
In order to survey the prevalence of parasites in soil from playground in a housing development testate, 368 samples were taken from playground 184 unit. The survey was carried out during 2 months from september in 1999 to October in 1999. The results were obtained as follows; 1. Eggs of toxocara canis were detected in 25 samples(6.8%) from 368 cases of playground. 2. The 3 kinds of eggs were isolated from the soil of playground. Those were strongyloides spp 13.9%, toxocara canis 6.8% and toxascaris leonina 2.4%. 3. It was mixed infestation such as single (80.0%) and double (20.0%).
Due to the possible emergence of resistance and safety concerns on certain treatments, development of new drugs against parasites is essential for the effective control and subsequent eradication of parasitic infections. Several drug targets have been identified which are either genes or proteins essential for the parasite survival and distinct from the hosts. These include the phosphagen kinases (PKs) which are enzymes that playa key role in maintenance of homeostasis in cells exhibiting high or variable rates of energy turnover by catalizing the reversible transfer of a phosphate between ATP and naturally occurring guanidine compounds. PKs have been identified in a number of important human and animal parasites and were also shown to be significant in survival and adaptation to stress conditions. The potential of parasite PKs as novel chemotherapeutic targets remains to be explored.
Nine species of copepod parasites are recorded from nine Korean cultured bivalves. One new species, Lichomolgus similis n. sp. is included, and other eight species are: Conchyliurus quintus, Pseudomyicola spinosus, Myicola ostreae, Ostrincola koe, O. japonica, Herrmannella longicaudata, Modiolicola bifidus, M gracilicaudus. The relationship between the copepod parasites and their host bivalves is discussed.
From September 1997 to August 1998, Korean indigeous goats infected with internal parasites were examined for efficacy of anthelminthics by fecal egg counts. Efficacy of anthelmintic drugs against gastointestinal Haemonchus contortus in goats were effective with Ivermectin(94.9%), Piperazine(92.8%), Levamisole(88.3%), Albendazole(68.2%), respectively. Albendazole was effective against goats with Haemonchus contortus in 3 herds, but not effective in 1 herds. Efficacy of anthelmintic drugs against gastointestinal Paramphistomim sp in goats were effective with Ivermectin(95.3%), Piperazine(93.3%), Albendazole(92.9%), Levamisole(91.1%), respectively. Efficacy of anthelmintic drugs against Eimeria sp in goats were effective with Toltrazuril(92.6%), Diclazuril(90.4% ), Nicarbazin (87.5%), Amprolium(70.0%), respectively. Amprolium was effective against goats with Eimeria sp in 3 herds, but not effective in 1 herds.
Observations were made on the infection rate of common internal parasites in dogs in Kwangju area from January to March, 1982. Dog's stools were collected from veterinary hospitals, houses, intensive dog-rearing places and sidewalks. On the basis of egg counting, the following results were obtained; 1. Of 464 fecal samples, 73.5% were appeared as positive. 2. Dogs from veterinary hospitals and intensive dog-rearing places have higher infection rates than others. 3. Of the parasites detected, Toxocara canis was the most commonly encountered (23.7%). 4. Ascarids, flukes and coccidia were more prevalent in pups than in mature dogs, whereas bookworms were detected less often in young dogs than in older ones. 5. There were significant (p<0.01) differences among age categories for all parasites except tapeworms.
