  • A Parametric study is numerically carried out for flow fields in a two-dimensional plane channel with thin obstacles(“baffles and blocks”) mounted symmetrically in the vertical direction and periodically in the streamwise direction. The aim of this investigation is to understand how various geometric conditions influence the critical characteristics and pressure drop. A range of BR(the ratio of baffle interval to channel height) between 1 and 5 is considered. Especially when BR is equal to 3, for which the critical Reynolds number turned out to be minimal, we add blocks in the center region in order to study their destabilizing effects on the flows. It is revealed that the critical Reynolds number is further decreased by the presence of the block.

  • The finite element analyses of a composite hingeless rotor blade in forward flight have been performed to investigate the influence of blade design parameters on the blade stability. The blade structure is represented by a single cell composite box-beam and its nonclassical effects such as transverse shear and torsion-related warping are considered. The nonlinear periodic differential equations of motion are obtained by moderate deflection beam theory and finite element method based on Hamilton principle. Aerodynamic forces are calculated using the quasi-steady strip theiry with compressibility and reverse flow effects. The coupling effects between the rotor blade and the fuselage are included in a free flight propulsive trim analysis. Damping values are calculated by using the Floquet transition matrix theory from the linearized equations perturbed at equilibrium position of the blade. The aeroelastic results were compared with an alternative analytic approch, and they showed good correlation with each other. Some parametric investigations for the helicopter design variables, such as pretwist and precone angles are carried out to know the aeroelastic behavior of the rotor.

  • Investigation is performed on the stability of general form of dynamic system whose damping and stiffness are varying in irregular manner along time, which is a preliminary result in the course of research on the characteristic and the control of the stochastic system. The governing equation of the 'parametric' system is derived via F-P-K approach in stochastic sense. The influence on the stability due to the magnitude of auto power spectral density and cross power spectral density of random variation of system parameters is studied and the region is surveyed.

  • There will inevitably be errors and uncertainties in tire yaw mark related critical speed formula, which is derived merely from the relationship between the centrifugal force and the friction force acting on the point-mass vehicle. Constructing and measuring yaw marks through appropriate simulation works have made it possible to perform uncertainty analysis in calculation of critical speeds under variation of variety of conditions and parameters while existing yaw mark experimental tests have not performed properly. This paper does not present only the critical speed analysis results for parametric sensitivity and uncertainty of chord and middle ordinate, coefficient of friction and road grade, but also modeling uncertainty such as variation of braking level during turning and vehicle size. The yaw mark analysis methods and results may be now applied in practice of traffic accident investigation.

  • The finite element mesh approach for tool surface description is applied effectively to analyze sheet metal stamping processes. To improve the mesh quality and the stability of the mesh generation process, a gybrid method based on the grid approach and the Delaunay triangulation is proposed in the present work. In the present study, a general method for the mathematical description of arbitrarily shaped tool surface is proposed by introducing the parametric surface approach. A polynomial function employed to describe the base parametric surface and the boundary curves are defined to describe arbitrary three-dimensional trimmed surfaces. To verify the validity of the proposed method, automatic mesh generation is carried out for some shosen complicated parts including actual automotive panel.

  • A new seismic design methodology has been developed for precast concrete diaphragms. Seismic design factors were used to be applied on top of diaphragm seismic design forces in the current code. These factors, established through extensive parametric studies, align diaphragm design strengths with different seismic performance targets. A simplified evaluation structure with a single-bay plan was used in the parametric studies. This simplified evaluation structure is reasonable and cost-effective as it can comprehensively cover structural geometries and design parameters. However, further verification and investigation are required to apply these design factors to prototype structures with realistic layouts. This paper presents diaphragm design of several precast concrete office buildings using the new design methodology. The applicability of the design factor to the office building was evaluated and verified through nonlinear time history analyses. The seismic behavior and performance of the diaphragm were investigated for the precast concrete office buildings. It was found that the design factor established for the new design methodology is applicable to the realistic precast concrete office buildings.

  • Although the investigation on the effect of loaded out-of-plane braces on the values of the stress concentration factor (SCF) in offshore tubular joints has been the objective of numerous research works, a number of quite important cases still exist that have not been studied thoroughly due to the diversity of joint types and loading conditions. One of these cases is the multi-planar tubular KK-joint subjected to axial loading. Tubular KK-joints are among the most common joint types in jacket substructure of offshore wind turbines (OWTs). In the present research, data extracted from the stress analysis of 243 finite element (FE) models, verified against available experimental data, was used to study the effects of geometrical parameters on the chord-side SCFs in multi-planar tubular KK-joints subjected to axial loading. Parametric FE study was followed by a set of nonlinear regression analyses to develop three new SCF parametric equations for the fatigue analysis and design of axially loaded multi-planar KK-joints.

  • A numerical investigation of the impact of steel ductility on the strength and ductility of two-way corner and edge-supported concrete slabs containing low ductility welded wire fabric is presented. A finite element model was developed for the investigation and the results of a series of concurrent laboratory experiments were used to validate the numerical solution. A parametric investigation was conducted using the numerical model to investigate the various factors that influence the structural behavior at the strength limit state. Different values of steel uniform elongation and ultimate to yield strength ratios were considered. The results are presented and evaluated, with emphasis on the strength, ductility, and failure mode of the slabs. It was found that the ductility of the flexural reinforcement has a significant impact on the ultimate load behavior of two-way corner-supported slabs, particularly when the reinforcement was in the form of cold drawn welded wire fabric. However, the impact of the low ductility WWF has showed to be less prominent in structural slabs with higher levels of structural indeterminacy. The load-deflection curves of corner-supported slabs containing low ductility WWF are brittle, and the slabs have little ability to undergo plastic deformation at peak load.

  • Stimulated polariton scattering from the $B_1$-symmetry modes of a $KNbO_3$ crystal to generate a terahertz wave (THz-wave) with a noncollinear phase-matching scheme is investigated. The frequency-tuning characteristics of the THz-wave by varying the phase-matching angle and pump wavelength are analyzed. The expression for the effective parametric gain length under the noncollinear phase-matching condition is deduced. Parametric gain and absorption characteristics of the THz-wave in $KNbO_3$ are theoretically simulated. The characteristics of $KNbO_3$ for a terahertz parametric oscillator (TPO) are compared to those of $MgO:LiNbO_3$. The analysis indicates that $KNbO_3$ is an excellent optical crystal for a TPO, to enhance the THz-wave output.

  • In this study, residual-stress distributions in welds with different strength used in natural gas pipelines are calculated by using finite-element analysis and simulating a realistic welding process. The temperature and residual-stress analysis results are compared with the real fusion profile and the application results of the Fitness-For-Service assessment code, API 579 in order to validate the finite-element analysis model and procedure. Parametric study is performed to assess the effect of welding and material variables such as mechanical strength mismatch, the strength of weld metal, reinforcement, and heat input on the residual stress distributions. Finally, on the basis of the parametric study results, the effects of these variables on residual stress distributions are investigated. In particular, the strength mismatch between base metals has an insignificant effect on residual-stress distributions.
