  • We report an effect of photon pairs on single-photon detection rates, while Hong-Ou-Handel's two-photon interference experiment is performed with photons produced in noncollinear type-I parametric down-conversion. Photon pairing behavior or spatial bunching is measured and shown to cause a decrease in the single photon counting rate. Such a dip is found to result from the fact that the single-photon timing resolution of photodetectors is much longer compared to the time interval between the two photons incident on the single-photon detector.

  • The theory of signal detection has been applied to a wide range of practical situation for a long time, including sonar detection, air traffic control and so on. In general, in this theory, sensitivity parametric index d' and bias parametric index $\beta$ are used to evaluated the performance of vigilance. These indices use observer's response "hit" and "false alarm" to explain and evaluate vigilance, but not considering reaction time. However, the reaction time of detecting should be considered in measuring vigilance in some supervisory tasks such as unlimited monitoring tasks (e.g., supervisors in nuclear plant). There are some researchers have used the segments of reaction time to generate a pair of probabilities of hit and false alarm probabilities and plot the receiver operating characteristic curve. The purpose of this study was to develop a quantitative vigilance-measuring model by fuzzy sets, which combined the concepts of hit, false alarm and reaction time. The model extends two-values logic to multi-values logic by membership functions of fuzzy sets. A simulated experiment of monitoring task in nuclear plant was carried out. Results indicated that the new vigilance-measuring model is more efficient than traditional indices; the characteristics of vigilance would be realized more clearly in unlimited monitoring task.

  • Vibration-based fault detection and condition monitoring of rotating machinery, using statistical process control (SPC) combined with statistical pattern recognition methodology, has been widely investigated by many researchers. In particular, the discrete wavelet transform (DWT) is considered as a powerful tool for feature extraction in detecting fault on rotating machinery. Although DWT significantly reduces the dimensionality of the data, the number of retained wavelet features can still be significantly large. Then, the use of standard multivariate SPC techniques is not advised, because the sample covariance matrix is likely to be singular, so that the common multivariate statistics cannot be calculated. Even though many feature-based SPC methods have been introduced to tackle this deficiency, most methods require a parametric distributional assumption that restricts their feasibility to specific problems of process control, and thus limit their application. This study proposes a nonparametric multivariate control chart method, based on multiscale wavelet scalogram (MWS) features, that overcomes the limitation posed by the parametric assumption in existing SPC methods. The presented approach takes advantage of multi-resolution analysis using DWT, and obtains MWS features with significantly low dimensionality. We calculate Hotelling's $T^2$-type monitoring statistic using MWS, which has enough damage-discrimination ability. A bootstrap approach is used to determine the upper control limit of the monitoring statistic, without any distributional assumption. Numerical simulations demonstrate the performance of the proposed control charting method, under various damage-level scenarios for a bearing system.

  • This study was carried out to suggest the best statistical test to analyze the trend in monthly water quality data. Traditional parametric tests such as t-test and regression analysis are based on the assumption that the underlying population has a normal distribution and regression analysis additionally assumes that residual errors are independent. Analyzing 9-years monthly COD data collected at Paldang in Han River, the underlying population was found to be neither normal nor independent. Therefore parametric tests are invalid for trend detection. Four Kinds of nonparametric statistical tests, such as Run Test, Daniel test, Mann-Kendall test, and Time Series Residual Analysis were applied to analyze the trend in the COD data, Daniel test and Mann-Kendall test indicated upward trend in COD data. The best nonparametric test was suggested to be Daniel test, which is simple in computation and easy to understand the intuitive meaning.

  • In the underwater communications, transmitted acoustic signal is corrupted by interference from multipath. A parametric array transducer is capable of radiating a narrow beam with very low sidelobe levels. In certain cases, the parametric array transducer can help the multipath problem. To improve the performance of the underwater communications, the statistical signal processing methods will be required. In the paper, the communication system using a parametric array transducer was demonstrated. To detect the received signal of the communication system based on the on-off keying, the maximum likelihood method using averaged signal for a particular window size is used. The communication system has GUI using LebVIEW which allows the user to change the parameter. The GUI can also be easily modified based on the characteristics of a parametric array transducer. The implemented system can effectively evaluate the performance of the parametric array transducer.

  • Edge detection considers the important technical details of digital image processing. Many edge detection operators already perform edge detection in digital color imaging. In this study, the edge of many real color images that represent the type of digital image was detected using a new operator in the least square approximation method, which is a type of numerical method. The Linear Fitting algorithm is computationally more expensive compared to the Canny, LoG, Sobel, Prewitt, HIS, Fuzzy, Parametric, Synthetic and Vector methods, and Robert' operators. The results showed that the new method can detect an edge in a digital color image with high efficiency compared to standard methods used for edge detection. In addition, the suggested operator is very useful for detecting the edge in a digital color image.

  • This paper introduces GP(Genetic Programming) based color detection model for an object detection of humanoid robot vision. Existing color detection methods have used linear/nonlinear transformation of RGB color-model. However, most of cases have difficulties to classify colors satisfactory because of interference of among color channels and susceptibility for illumination variation. Especially, they are outstanding in degraded images from robot vision. To solve these problems, we propose illumination robust and non-parametric multi-colors detection model using evolution of GP. The proposed method is compared to the existing color-models for various environments in robot vision for real humanoid Nao.

  • This paper presents a novel defect detection method for one chip RF front end with fault detection circuits using input matching measurement. We present a BIST circuit using 40.25{\mu}m$ CMOS technology. We monitor the input transient voltage of the RF front end to differentiate faulty and fault-free RF front end. Catastrophic as well as parametric variation fault models are used to simulate the faulty response of the RF front end. This technique has several advantages with respect to the standard approach based on current test stimulus and frequency domain measurement. Because DUT and fault detection circuits are implemented in the same chip, this test technique only requires use of digital voltmeter (RMS meter) and RF voltage source generator for simpleand inexpensive testing.

  • In this paper, we propose an algorithm to extract rectangular object area such 3s Data Matrix two-dimensional barcode using edge tracing-based linear feature detection. Hough transform is usually employed to detect lines of edge map. However, it requires parametric image space, and does not find the location of end points of the detected lines. Our algorithm detects end points of the detected lines using edge tracing and extracts object area using its shape information.

  • In this paper, an integrated design of fault detection, diagnosis and reconfigurable control tot multi-input and multi-output system is proposed. It is based on the interacting multiple model estimation algorithm, which is one of the most cost-effective adaptive estimation techniques for systems involving structural and/or parametric changes. This research focuses on the method to recover the performance of a system with failed actuators by switching plant models and controllers appropriately. The proposed scheme is applied to a fault tolerant control design for flight control system.
