Effects of oxygen deficiency on the room temperature ferromagnetism in Fe-doped reduced $TiO_2$ have been investigated by comparing the air-annealed $Ti_{0.97}Fe_{0.03}O_2$ compound with secondly post-annealed one in vacuum ambience. The air-annealed sample showed a paramagnetic behavior at room temperature. However, when the sample was further annealed in vacuum, a strongly enhanced ferromagnetic behavior was observed at same temperature. $M{\"{o}}ssbauer$ spectra of air-annealed sample at 295K showed a single doublet of $Fe^{3+}$, suggesting that the Fe ions are paramagnetic. On the other hand, the absorption spectra after vacuum-annealing exhibited two doublets, in which one is the same component with air-annealed sample and the other is new doublet corresponding to $Fe^{2+}$ state. This result suggests that the occurrence of ferromagnetism in reduced sample may be interpreted as the contribution of unquenched orbital moment of $Fe^{2+}$ ions.
The intravoxel spin phases in magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) usually vary due to susceptibility differences of materials to be imaged. The phase variation in the voxel results in a reduction of the signal intensity. This signal intensity reduction is known as the susceptibility effect in MRI and has been studied extensively. In this paper, a new spectral decomposition technique Is proposed and the signal change due to the susceptibility effect can be analyzed. A pulse sequence for the spectral decomposition of the susceptibility was developed and applied to susceptibility imaging of venous blood possessing paramagnetic properties. The computer simulations and their corresponding experimental results obtained using both a phantom and human volunteers are reported. Key words : susceptibility effect in MRI : spectral decomposition of susceptibility effect.
We have investigated the magnetic properties and the electronic structures of Tc half-monolayer (0.5-ML) on Pd(001) using the full-potential linearized augmented plane wave(FLAPW) energy band method. We calculated the total energies for ferromagnetic and paramagnetic states to determine the stable magnetic state. The calculated results show that the total energy of the ferromagnetic state is lower than that of the paramagnetic one. The overlayer Tc 0.5-ML has considerably large magnetic moment $(2.09\;{\mu}_B)$, while the substrate Pd layers have been negatively polarized. The calculated density of states and total electrons inside the muffin-tin (MT) sphere are presented and discussed in relation with the magnetic properties.

The work describes EPR and 17O NMR measurements followed by theoretical calculation of the rotational correlation time $({\tau}_R)$, the water residence time $({\tau}_m)$, and the longitudinal electronic spin relaxation time $(T_{le})$(T_1e) for two new gadolinium complexes 1 and 2 of the type [$Gd(L)(H_2O)$] (L = tranexamic esters) in order to investigate their efficiency as a paramagnetic contrast agent (PCA). Of three correlation times, τR plays a major and predominant role to the unusually high relaxivity of 1 and 2 as compared with that of clinically approved MR CAs such as [$Gd(DTPA)(H_2O)]2‐ (Magnevist${\circledR}$), [Gd(DTPA-BMA)(H2O)] (Omniscan${\circledR}$), and $[Gd(DOTA)(H_2O)]^-$ (Dotarem${\circledR}$). The presence of bulky tranexamic ester in the ligand seems to be responsible for the conformational rigidity, which in turn causes such great an increase in ${\tau}_R$.
This study explores and interprets in a new way the complex solvent and the temperature dependence of the NMR shifts for the N-$CH_2$ protons in tris(N,N-diethyldithiocarbamato) iron(III) in acetone, benzene, carbon disulfide, chloroform, dimethylformamide and pyridine. The NMR shifts are interpreted in terms of the Fermi contact interaction and the dipolar term from the multipole expansion of the interaction of the electron orbital angular momentum and the electron spin dipolar-nuclear spin angular momentum. This analysis yields a direct measure of the effect of the solvent system on the environment of the transition metal ion. The results are analysed in terms of the crystal field environment of the transition metal ion with contributions from (a) the dithiocarbamate ligand (b) the solvent molecules and (c) the interaction of the effective dipole moment of the polar solvent molecule with the transition metal ion complex.
The Magnetization behaviour has been measured for amorphous $Fe_{80-x}Mn_xZr_{10}$ (x = 4,6,8,10) alloys. The Curie temperature decreased from 236 K to 195 K with increasing Mn concentration (x = 4 to x = 10). The magnetization measurements were conducted at temperatures above the Curie temperature in the paramagnetic region. In all samples, the magnetic properties showed superparamagnetic behavior above $T_c$ where the mean magnetic moment of the superparamagnetic spin clusters decreased with increasing temperature. A large magnetic entropy change, ${\Delta}S_M$, which is calculated from H vs M curves associated with the ferromagnetic-paramagnetic transitions in amorphous, has been observed. With Mn concentration increasing, ${\Delta}S_M$ decreases 1.04, 0.95, 0.87 J/kg K at 222, 210, 195 K (the Curie temperature), respectively.

The authors investigated the photoluminescence (PL) and the electron paramagnetic resonance (EPR) from an magnesium (Mg)-doped GaN thin film with a delta-doped layer. The regularly doped sample shows a PL peak at 2.776 eV for the as-grown sample, and the peak shifts to 2.904 eV and increases in intensity for the annealed sample. The delta-doped sample also shows the same PL peak as does the regularly doped sample. However, only the annealed delta-doped layer shows a sharp EPR with a small isotropic Lande g-factor, $g_{II}$, of 2.029. This resonance is attributed to the delta-doped layer, which forms a hole-bound Mg-N atomic structure instead of the $Mg_{Ga}-V_N$ defect complex, indicating that the delta-doped sample was not optically activated to form PL centers but was instead electrically activated to form a hole-bound state.
The solvent effects on the isotropic NMR shifts in conformationally rigid ligands such as quinuclidine, pyridine, and 4-aminopyridine coordinated to the paramagnetic polyoxometalate, [SiW11CoⅡO39]6- (SiW11Co), are reported. For these complexes the ligand exchange is slow on the NMR time scale and pure 1H NMR signals have been observed at room temperature. The signals for the SiW11Co complexes are shifted upfield whe dimethyl sulfoxide-d6 (DMSO) is added to a D2O solution. The isotropic shifts are separated into contact and pseudocontact contributions by assuming that the contact shifts are proportional to the isotropic shifts of the same ligands coordinated to [SiW11NiⅡO39]6-. It is shown that both the contact and pseudocontact shifts decrease (the absolute values of the pseudocontact shifts increase), when D2O is replaced by DMSO. It is suggested that D2O, a strong hydrogen bond donor, withdraws electron density from [SiW11CoⅡO39]6-, increasing the acidity of the cobalt ion toward the axial ligand. When D2O is replaced by DMSO, the acidity of the cobalt ion in SiW11Co decreases, weakening the Co-N bond. Then both the contact and pseudocontact shifts are expected to decrease in agreement with the observed solvent effects.
$^1H$ NMR spectra of imidazole, 2-and 4(5)-methylimidazole, histamine, L-histidine, L-histidine methyl ester, N${\alpha}$-acetyl-L-histidine, and L-carnosine coordinated to the paramagnetic undecatungstocobalto(II)silicate ($SiW_{11}Co$) and undecatungstonickelo(II)silicate ($SiW_{11}Ni$) anions are reported. For these complexes the ligand exchange is slow on the NMR time scale and the pure resonance lines of the free ligand and the complexes have been observed separately at room temperature. Two different complexes are formed, depending upon which nitrogen atom of the imidazole ring is coordinated to the cobalt or nickel ion of $SiW_{11}M$. Thus the NMR spectrum of a $D_2O$ solution containing a ligand and $SiW_{11}M$ consists of three sets of lines originating from the free ligand and two complexes. All NMR lines of the $SiW_{11}Co$ complexes have been assigned unequivocally using the saturation transfer technique. The temperature dependence of some spectra are also reported. The NMR spectra of some complexes show that the internal rotation of the substituent on the imidazole ring is hampered by the heteropolyanion moiety even at room temperature.
Objective: The objectives of this study were to investigate the direct antioxidative effect of 90 Kda heat shock protein (Hsp90) obtained from duck muscle. Methods: The interaction of Hsp90 with phospholipids and oxidized phospholipids was studied with surface plasmon resonance (SPR), and their further oxidation in the presence of Hsp90 was evaluated with thiobarbituric acid reactive substances (TBARS) assay. The scavenging effect on the 1,1-diphenyl-2-picrylhydrazyl (DPPH) and 2,2'-azinobis (3-ethylbenzthiazoline-6-sulfonic acid (ABTS) was measured, and the electron paramagnetic resonance (EPR) spectroscopy in combination with 5-tert-Butoxycarbonyl-5-methyl-1-pyrroline-N-oxide and 2-phenyl-4,4,5,5,-tetramethylimidazoline-1-oxyl-3-oxide (PTIO) was utilized to determine the abilities of Hsp90 in scavenging hydroxyl and PTIO radicals. Results: SPR showed Hsp90 could bind with both phospholipids and oxidized phospholipids, and prevent their further oxidation by the TBARS assay. The DPPH and ABTS scavenging activity increased with Hsp90 concentration, and could reach 27% and 20% respectively at the protein concentration of 50 μM. The EPR spectra demonstrated Hsp90 could directly scavenge ·OH and PTIO· radicals. Conclusion: This suggests that Hsp90, a natural antioxidant in meat, may play an important role in cellular defense against oxidative stress, and may have potential use in meat products.
