  • Background: Inverted papilloma(IP) of the nasal cavity and paranasal sinuses is a benign neoplastic condition that can be associated with squamous cell carcinoma (SCC). Several studies have indicated an etiologic role for viruses in the development of inverted papilloma. And it is necessary to find out the significance of a biologic markers such as p53, c-erbB-2 to predict the malignant potential. The purposes of this study are to detect HPV in inverted papilloma of the nasal cavity and paranasal sinus, to examine role of HPV as an etiological agent, to examine the relationship between HPV subtype and malignant transformation of inverted papilloma, and to investigate the relation between expression rate of p53, c-erbB-2 and HPV in recurrent or malignant transformation cases. Material and Methods: Thirty two cases of inverted papilloma(IP) in the nasal cavity and paranasal sinuses were reviewed and classified into 3 groups; simple IP, IP with dysplasia group, IP with squamous cell carcinoma group. Paraffin embedded achival tissue was used in this study. The HPV was detected by in situ hybridzation (ISH) using HPV type 6/11, 16/18, 31/33/35 DNA probes. Expression of p53 and c-erbB-2 was examined by immunohistochemical staining. Results: 1) The HPV was detected in 6(19%) out of 32 cases. 2) The HPV 6/11 was dectected in 4 out of 21 cases of simple IP, HPV 16/18 in 1, HPV 31/33/35 in lout of 8 cases of IP with dysplasia respectively. 3) The positive expression of p53 was 13 cases out of 32 cases; 2 out of 21 cases of simple IP, all of 8 cases of IP with dysplasia and 3 cases of IP with squamous cell carcinoma 4) The positive expression of c-erbB-2 was in 24 out of 32 cases; 16 out of 21 cases of simple IP, 6 out of 8 cases of IP with dysplasia, 2 out of 3 cases of IP with squamous cell ca. 5) The recurrence of IP occurred in lout of 6 cases of positive for HPV, in 4 out of 26 cases negative for HPV. 6) The recurrence of IP occurred only in positive cases for p53. 7) The recurrence of IP occurred in 4(17%) out of 24 cases positive for c-erbB-2, in 1(13%) out of 8 cases negative for c-erbB-2. Conclusion: The p53 expression was associated with Inverted papillomas exhibiting evidence of malignant transformation. Also, there was a correlation between the p53 expression and recurrence.

  • Choroid plexus papillomas (CPPs) are typically considered as benign tumors, with a favorable long-term prognosis. Drop metastasis of CPP into the spinal subarachnoid space is rare. We report a 42-year-old woman who presented with headache and back pain 6 years after removal of a posterior fossa CPP. Magnetic resonance imaging revealed mass lesions in the lumbosacral subarachnoid space and recurrent intracranial tumor. The lesions were resected and histologically diagnosed was CPP. We consider that CPP can spread via cerebrospinal fluid pathways and cause spinal drop metastasis. Therefore, it is necessary to evaluate the whole spinal axis and to perform periodic follow-up examinations in patients with CPP.

  • Purpose: This study was performed to examine the knowledge of HPV in female university students. Methods: Participants consisted of 285 female university students(nursing major;153, others;132). A dichotomy with 20 items of HPV knowledge was developed by a researcher. Results: Reliability of the HPV knowledge tool was Cronbach' alpha .87, and Split-half Guttman coefficient .85. Correction rates of HPV knowledge by item ranged from 19.6 to 76.8%. There were no significant differences in HPV knowledge scores by major group or sex related characteristics. Conclusions: Accurate, university wide education regarding HPV knowledge for female university students should be done regardless of the major; nursing or not. Replication studies with different ages or sex groups and application of HPV education in relation to STI prevention and cervical cancer prevention are recommended.

  • Benign papillary tumors commonly arise in the upper respiratory tract but are rare in the lower respiratory tract, especially in the bronchi. Solitary benign papillary tumors arising at the bronchi, covered with stratified squamous epithelium and associated with little or no inflammatory cell response, seem to be rarest of all types of benign bronchial tumors. Only six cases of such tumors had been reported in the medical literature over the past 74 years until 1968. The following is a case report of solitary benign papilloma arising at the opening of the left main bronchus which was treated with bronchoscopic removal at Chest Surgery Depariment, N.M.C. on Sept.

  • Verruca vulgaris of the larynx (VVL) is an extremely rare disease that can be easily misdiagnosed as papillary keratosis, squamous papilloma or verrucous carcinoma, which would have led to needless operation. We experienced a case of VVL in a 66-year-old man with 1-year history of progressive hoarseness. Whitish lesions in both vocal cords were observed by using indirect laryngoscopy and completely removed via microlaryngeal surgery with $CO_2$ laser.

  • Two cases of lingual masses were observed among 500 Fischer 344 (F344) rats which were used as control and treated animals in a 2 year carcinogenicity study in Toxicology Research Center, Korea Research Institute of Chemical Technology. The masses grossly appeared as tan, pedunculated, fungiform on the dorsal aspect of the base of the tongues. They were approximately $1.5{\times}1.2{\times}0.3cm$ in size. The microscopic features consisted of acanthosis, hyperkeratosis, papillary projection with connective tissue cores and multifocal chronic active inflammation with hair shafts. The results observed support the epigenetic mechanism of tumorigenesis which is caused by Physical stimuli of foreign bodies. Both of the masses were diagnosed as papillomas with the incidence rate of 0.4%(1/250) in each sex on the basis of the gross and microscopic features.

  • Recurrent respiratory papillomatosis (RRP) is characterized by repeated recurrence in the respiratory system, such as the pharynx, larynx, and trachea, caused by the human papilloma virus. The main treatment is surgical removal of the papilloma. However repeated recurrence of RRP in multiple areas is burdened for the surgeon. In addition to the surgery, various adjuvant therapies have been studied to reduce the recurrence. Literature review was conducted with a focus on the adjuvant treatments for RRP.

  • Among wild marbled sole, Pleuronectes yokohamae caught in west coastal area, Chungnam, tumor-bearing fish were found. Parasites and pathogenic bacteria were not detected and CPE was not observed. Using the light microscope, the epidermal layer of wild P. yokohamae was significantly thickened compared to the normal skin. The lesion was formed papillary folds. Hypertropical epithelial cells revealed karyolysis, marked nucleolus and cloud swelled cytoplasm. In the epidermal layer of the lesion, X-cell that is characterized by oval and small pale nucleus and prominent nucleolus was observed. Dermal layer had newly formed vessels. The size of mucous cell in the papilloma lesion was significantly increased compared to the normal. In this study, no pathogens were found, so future works for finding cause of the papilloma in the P. yokohamae are needed.
