  • Objective: In this study, we aimed to investigate the recent changes such as allele frequencies and total probability of exclusion (PE) in Thoroughbred horses in Korea using short tandem repeat (STR) parentage panels between 2006 and 2016. Methods: The genotype was provided for 5,988 horse samples with 15 microsatellite markers (AHT4, AHT5, ASB2, ASB17, ASB23, CA425, HMS1, HMS2, HMS3, HMS6, HMS7, HTG4, HTG10, LEX3 and VHL20). Results: In our study, the observed number of alleles per locus ranged from 3 (HMS1) to 9 (ASB17) in 2006 and 4 (HMS1) to 9 (ASB2) in 2016, with a mean value of 6.28 and 6.40, respectively. Of the 15 markers, HMS2, HTG4, and CA425 loci had relatively low polymorphism information content (<0.5000) in the Thoroughbred population. Mean levels of genetic variation in 2006 and 2016 were observed heterozygosity (HO) = 0.708, and expected heterozygosity (HE) = 0.685, as well as and HO = 0.699 and HE = 0.682, respectively. The PE was calculated for each group based on the allele frequencies of 14 or 15 STRs. The 2006 survey analyzed that PE was 0.9998, but it increased to 0.9999 in 2016 after the HMS2 marker was added in 2011. The current STR panel is still a powerful tool for parentage verification that contributes to the maintenance of integrity in the Thoroughbred population. Conclusion: The current STR panel is still a powerful tool for parentage verification that contributes to the maintenance of integrity in the Thoroughbred horses. However, continuous monitoring genetic variability is necessary.

  • The purpose of this paper is to evaluate the fire resistant performances of load-bearing wall using both composite and steel stud panel infilled with light-weight formed mortar under axial loading according to KS F 2257(1999). The minimum requirement of 2 hours fire resistant rating is needed for the residential and commercial buildings under the fire regulation of Korea. From test results, it is found that two types of specimen composed of the hybrid stud and steel stud panel filled with light-weight formed mortar fited in with the requirement of 2 hours fire resisting rate for the load-bearing wall. In the conclusions, the specimen with hybrid stud shows predominating fire-resistant performance on the adiabatic effects rather than that of the steel stud specimen.

  • The driving properties of a particle-insertion method that filters non-moving particles are analyzed, by measuring its optical and electrical properties. An area that is occupied by the moved particles is proposed, as a desirable evaluation method for a reflective display. To compare the driving property of the particle-moving method with that of the reported simple particle-loading method, two panels are fabricated, according to the different particle-insertion methods, in the same panel condition, of which the width of ribs is $30{\mu}m$, the cell size is $220{\mu}m{\times}220{\mu}m$, the cell gap is $116-120{\mu}m$, the q/m value of the black particles is $+1.8{\mu}C/g$ and that for the white particles is $-4.3{\mu}C/g$. The particle-moving method has a filtering effect which excludes the non-moving particles, inserting only movable particles into the respective cell, so that a panel fabricated by the particle-moving method can drive most of the particles in a cell. Also, most of the particles move at the threshold voltage of 40 V, with enhanced reflectivity. The driving property is also verified by measurement of the occupation rate of the moved particles.

  • This paper reports the cooling performance of a PDP(plasma display panel) with a heat spreader by means of numerical analysis. Due to the simplifications and assumptions inherent in the analysis, computed results are found to differ those of the experiment by 13%. Calculation shows a maximum temperature of $65^{\circ}C$ for the plasma glass, as opposed to the allowable temperature of $90^{\circ}C$, producing a temperature difference of $25^{\circ}C$ between the upper and lower regions. This is enough to cause cracks in the plasma glass. In order to avoid this, more ventholes are added at the upper center region of the back cover, thereby causing a $3^{\circ}C$ drop in the maximum temperature, which reduces the temperature difference to $12^{\circ}C$. The new design gives more uniform temperature distribution across the plasma glass.

  • Hemming is used to connect two sheet metal components by folding the edge of an outer panel around an inner panel to create a smooth edge. The minimization of hemming defects is critical to the final quality of automobile products because hemming is one of the last operations during fabrication. Designing the hemmed part is not easy and is influenced by the geometry of the bent part. Therefore, the main problem for automotive parts is dimensional accuracy since formed products often deviate geometrically due to large springback. Few numerical approaches using 3-dimensional finite element model have been applied to hemming due to the small element size which is needed to properly capture the bending behavior of the sheet around small die corner and the comparatively big size of automotive opening parts, such as doors, hoods and deck lids. The current study concentrates on the 3-dimensional numerical simulation of hemming for an automotive door. The relationship between the design parameters of the hemming operation and the height difference defect is shown. Quality improvement of the automotive door can be increased through the study of model parameters.

  • In this study, the added resistances of the large container ship in head and oblique seas are evaluated using a time-domain Rankine panel method. The mean forces and moments are computed by the near-field method, namely, the integration of the second-order pressure directly on the ship surface. Furthermore, a weakly nonlinear approach in which the nonlinear restoring and Froude-Krylov forces on the exact wetted surface of a ship are included in order to examine the effects of amplitudes of waves on ship motions and added resistances. The computation results for various advance speeds and heading angles are validated by comparing with the experimental data, and the validation shows reasonable consistency. Nevertheless, there exist discrepancies between the numerical and experimental results, especially for a shorter wave length, a higher advance speed, and stern quartering seas. Therefore, the accuracies of the linear and weakly nonlinear methods in the evaluation of the mean drift forces and moments are also discussed considering the characteristics of the hull such as the small incline angle of the non-wall-sided stern and the fine geometry around the high-nose bulbous bow.

  • It has been many efforts for reinforcement of existing structure since the number of earthquake has been increased world widely. Especially the occurrence of earthquake surrounding area of Korean peninsular is dramatically increased. Since the buildings in Korea have not been designed to carry the lateral and shear force caused by earthquake, the building will experience massive damages even under moderate earthquake. For this reason, the viscoelastic damper is proposed in this paper to enhance the earthquake resistance of a steel frame buildings. The viscoelastic dampers have been able to increase the overall damping of the structure significantly, hence improving the overall performance of dynamically sensitive structures. In this paper, Viscoelastic dampers designed are consists of FRP panel and viscoelastic material. In this paper, evaluate the performance of the viscoelastic damper through the experiment.
