In order to understand the relationship between the distribution of epilithic diatoms and the habitual environments, land-use, water qualities, and epilithic diatoms were studied at 141 sampling sites in the midwestern stream of Korean peninsula (Geum river, Mangyeong river, Dongjin river, and Sapgyo river). The total 183 diatom taxa was appeared in the study, while the dominant species were found to be Nitzschia palea (10.9%) and Achnanthes convergens (8.4%). Based on the abundance of epilithic diatoms, a cluster analysis results indicate that the sampling sites divided the sampling sites into 4 groups (G) at the 25% level. In term of geographic and aquatic environments, G-I and -II accounted for the upper and mid streams of the Geum river, and had large forest areas and good in water quality. G-III accounted for farmland and urban, and high concentration nutrient levels (TN and TP) and electric conductivity. G-IV accounted for mostly farmland, and high levels in turbidity, BOD, nutrient and electric conductivity. CCA results showed that the saproxenous taxa Meridion circulare was the indicator species of G-I, which strongly influenced by altitude and forests. In G-II, the indifferent taxa Navicula cryptocephala was influenced by Chl-a, AFDM, and DO. In G-III and -IV, the indifferent taxa Fragilaria elliptica and saprophilous taxa Aulacoseira ambigua were influenced by electric conductivity, turbidity, and nutrient counts. Meanwhile, random forest results showed that the predicting factor of indicator species appearance in G-I, -II, and -III was found to be electric conductivity whereas in G-IV it was found to be turbidity. Collectively, the distribution of diatoms in the midwestern of Korean peninsula was found to depend more on the land-use and its subsequent water qualities than the inherent characteristics of the aquatic environment.

The Bayesian algorithm model is a model algorithm that calculates probabilities based on input data and is mainly used for complex disasters, water quality management, the ecological structure between living things or living-non-living factors. In this study, we analyzed the main factors affected Korean Estuary Trophic Diatom Index (KETDI) change based on the Bayesian network analysis using the diatom community and physicochemical factors in the domestic estuarine aquatic ecosystem. For Bayesian analysis, estuarine diatom habitat data and estuarine aquatic diatom health (2008~2019) data were used. Data were classified into habitat, physical, chemical, and biological factors. Each data was input to the Bayesian network model (GeNIE model) and performed estuary aquatic network analysis along with the nationwide and each coast. From 2008 to 2019, a total of 625 taxa of diatoms were identified, consisting of 2 orders, 5 suborders, 18 families, 141 genera, 595 species, 29 varieties, and 1 species. Nitzschia inconspicua had the highest cumulative cell density, followed by Nitzschia palea, Pseudostaurosira elliptica and Achnanthidium minutissimum. As a result of analyzing the ecological network of diatom health assessment in the estuary ecosystem using the Bayesian network model, the biological factor was the most sensitive factor influencing the health assessment score was. In contrast, the habitat and physicochemical factors had relatively low sensitivity. The most sensitive taxa of diatoms to the assessment of estuarine aquatic health were Nitzschia inconspicua, N. fonticola, Achnanthes convergens, and Pseudostaurosira elliptica. In addition, the ratio of industrial area and cattle shed near the habitat was sensitively linked to the health assessment. The major taxa sensitive to diatom health evaluation differed according to coast. Bayesian network analysis was useful to identify major variables including diatom taxa affecting aquatic health even in complex ecological structures such as estuary ecosystems. In addition, it is possible to identify the restoration target accurately when restoring the consequently damaged estuary aquatic ecosystem.

This experiment was conducted to evaluate the effect of the various stage of growth on dry matter yield and chmical composition of forage oat(Avena sativa. L.). Seeds were planted on March 13 1993 on the Livestock Experimental Farm Keiymung junior college at keongsan Keongsangbukdo. Oat plant were harvested at various stages of maturity while the oat was in the premature stages. 1. Whole plant dry matter increased with advancing maturity. It was 11.8, 12.3, 14.9, 25.6 and 28.8% at before flag leaf emerged, flag leaf emerged, heads emerged, milk and dough stage., respectively. Dry matter increased very little during from before flag leaf emerged to heads emerged, after which it increased rapidly until the plant was dough stage. 2. Leaf weight ratio decreased with advancing maturity from before flag leaf emerged to dough, varied fmm 58 to 1 1%. Grain(with lemma, palea) increased with advancing maturity from heads emerged to dough, varied from 7 to 43%. 3. The content of cmde protein decreased during the stages of growth until milk(P<.OS), and then changed very little with advancing maturity. 4. The content of NDF and ADF increased rapidly during the early growth period until heading(P<.05) and then decreased due to the increase in carbohydrate storage in the grain. 5. The dry matter yields per ha increased with advancing maturity, it was 2,420, 4,380, 7,190, 13,130 and 14,530kg at before flag leaf emerged, flag leaf emerged, heads emerged, milk and early dough, respectively. Significant difference has been obtained among stages of growth(P< .05). 6. According to the results obtained from this study, it is suggested that milk stage of maturity is higher in dry matter yields would be recomendable for spring oat for silage.
Alkaline phosphatase ($AP_{ase}$) activity was studied for the pure cultures and natural communities of phytoplankton. The Michaelis-Menten constant ($K_m$) showed large variation with species. Some green algae showed large $K_m$ ($650\;{\mu}M$ for Selenastrum capriconutum). Chlorella sp. and Nitzschia palea showed smaller Km (respectively1.7, 2.0 HM) than those of other species examined. The extracellular free enzyme in the filtrate of Anabaena flos-aquae showed smaller Km ($52\;{\mu}M$) than that of cellbound form ($276\;{\mu}M$). The $K_m$ ($12.0\;{\mu}M$) of summer phytoplankton in Lake Soyang. when Anabaena sp. was dominant species, was larger than that (1.5 HM) of spring phytoplankton when Asterionella sp. was the dominant. Although maximum activity($V_{max}$) in Lake Soyang was affected by the concentration of DIP within the lake, but the $V_{max}$ always varied not with the DIP concentration of the lake. Induction of $AP_{ase}$ may be more affected by the phosphate content within the cell of phytoplankton than by the concentration of DIP within the lake, The extracellular free $AP_{ase}$ activity accounted for $36{\sim}97%$ of total activity from fall to spring turnover in Lake Soyang. The $K_m$ ($1.1{\mu}3.5\;M$) of extracelluar free enzyme were simillar to those ($0.7{\mu}3.5\;M$) of the total activity. This indicates that the extracelluar free enzyme was derived from phytoplankton.
Barley kernel discoloration (KD) leads to substantial loss in value through downgrading and discounting of malting barley. The objective of this research is to investigate fungal distribution and varieties resistance to KD in Korean two-rowed barley. Several fungal organisms including Alternaria spp., Fusarium spp., Aspergillus spp., Epicoccum spp. and Rhizopus spp. were isolated from Korean two-rowed barley representing KD. The symptoms of KD were brown and black discolorations of the lemma and palea. The most frequently detected fungal species was Alternaria spp. which exhibited 69.1% and 72.2% in 2011 and 2012, respectively. Epicoccum spp., Fusarium spp., and Aspergillus spp. were also detected. Fusarium spp., primary pathogen of barley head blight, were rarely occurred in the 2011 and their occurrence increased to 4.7% in 2012. Twenty cultivars of Korean two-rowed barely were evaluated to KD. The average percentage of KD was 8.0-36.0% in 2011 and 5.2-36.6% in 2012. Two cultivars ('Sacheon 6' and 'Dajinbori') showed KD of 6.2% to 8.8% and determined resistant, however 'Samdobori' and 'Daeyeongbori' demonstrating KD of 22.2-36.6% were highly susceptible. 'Jinyangbori', 'Danwonbori', 'Sinhobori' and 'Kwangmaegbori' showing KD of less than 15% were moderately resistant cultivar.
The morphogenesis of panicle and spikelet in paddy rice has been studied in high yielding Indica$\times$Japonica hybrid cultivar, Milyang 23 and a Japonica type cultivar, Koshihikari. Germinated seeds planted in $5000^{-1}$ a pots filled with submerged soil and cultured under natural conditions. The young panicle of main stem were continuously dissected and observered by Cryo-SEM from the panicle initiation stage until heading stage. Although the date of panicle differentiation and heading in Koshihikari earlier than those of Milyang 23. the sequence of panicle development in two cultivars begins when first bract primordium at opposite side of flag-leaf primordium differentiated, synchronously followed by growth of the primary branch primordia (PBPs) and secondary branch primordia (SBPs), spikelet primordia(SPs), glumes as lateral organs on rachilla and organs composing single floret, and successive sporogenesis in the young spikelets continue after the enclosure by lemma and palea. The PBPs are acropetally initiated from the base of the panicle primordium, and the SBPs alternately differentiate from the base of upper PBP which differentiate later than the lower PBP. Spikelet development starts at the top of upper side PBP of the young panicle and continue basipetally even though SBPs continue to develop at the lower primary branch. Each PBP, SBP and SP differentiate with differentiation bract or bract hair cell around the base of each their primordia. The observation could confirm that Milyang 23 has not only 2~3 more defferentiated PBPs, but also more SBPs and SPs especially from middle-lower primary branch, at end of their differentiation stages, as compared to those of Koshihikari.
Differentiation and degeneration of spikelets in paddy rice has been studied in high yielding Indica$\times$Japonica hybrid cultivar, Milyang 23 and a Japonica type cultivar, Koshihikari. Germinated seeds planted in 5000$^{-1}$ a pots filled with submerged soil and cultured under natural conditions. The young panicles of main stem were continuously dissected and observered by Cryo-SEM from the panicle initiation stage, and investigated about formation position of the differentiation and degeneration spikelet within a panicle of 7 days after heading. The degeneration of spikelet appeared simultaneously throughout panicle just after closure of spikelet by the palea and lemma. Differentiated and degenerated spikelets per panicle were about 240, 80 for Milyang 23 and 87, 6 for Koshihikari, respectively. The spikelets degeneration in Milyang 23 was mainly on the secondary and tertiary branch which were developed from primary branch of middle-basal panicle node and hardly not the spikelets of primary branch, and degeneration rate of secondary and tertiary rachis branch and spikelets for Milyang 23 were 2.5 times greater than those of Koshihikari. The proper relation equation between total differentiation or normal spikelets number per panicle(Y) and each rachis branch number were different between cultivars, Le., Y=5.5X$_1$+3.0X$_2$ for Koshihikari as previously proposed, but those of Milyang 23, Y=5.7X$_1$+3.5X$_2$+2.8X$_3$ for total differentiation spikelets and Y=5.6X$_1$+3.2X$_2$+2.4X$_3$ for normally developed spikelets, where X$_1$, X$_2$, X$_3$ are number of primary, secondary, tertiary rachis branch, respectively.
The diversity and biomass distribution of benthic diatom flora at tidal flats of Hampyeong Bay were studied from 2006 to 2013 as a part of KLTER Program. A total of 83 species (77 strains in 2006, 65 strains in 2007, 41 strains in 2008, 45 strains in 2009, 54 strains in 2010, 55 strains in 2011, 56 strains in 2012 and 40 strains in 2012) were identified as benthic diatoms of Hampyeong Bay tidal flats. The most dominant species were Paralia sulcata and Cyclotella litoralis. Cyclotella sp., Diploneis sp., Entomoneis alata, Gyrosigma sp., Navicula abunda, Navicula gregaria, Navicula spp. and Nitzschia palea were the other common species which contributed to the high benthic diatom biomass in the Bay. The diversity of benthic diatoms varied according to the sample stations and seasons. The highest diversity was observed in August samples. The range of chlorophyll- a concentration in sediments of tidal flats for 8 years was 21~65 mg $m^{-2}$. The standing crops of benthic diatoms varied according to the studied stations and sampled seasons. The number of taxa and standing crops showed decreasing tendency year after year from all sampled stations. The distributions of standing crops and cell volumes of benthic diatoms showed similar pattern. The taxa and biomass of benthic diatoms showed low correlation coefficients with temperature variables expressed as the following equations $Y=-0.0208X^2+0.5264X+19.529(r^2=0.0269)$ and $Y=-0.9181X^2+27.011X+310.07(r^2=0.0797)$ respectively.
The Shihwa constructed wetland was established for the treatment of severely polluted water from Banwoul, Donghwa and Samhwa streams. This study was focused on investigating dynamics of phytoplankton communities in open waters and periphytic algae on reed (Phragmites communis) planting area at 5 stations from October 2001 to July 2002. The concentration of T-N and T-P of inlet stations from the streams were decreased by flowed through the wetland. However, the TN/TP ratios at all stations were shown as a little over 16 indicating that the T-P will play some role as a limitation factor. Phytoplankton communities were identified as a total 413 taxa which were composed of 375 species, 21 varieties, 2 forma and 15 unidentified species. Standing crops of phytoplankton communities and chlorophyll-a concentrations ranged from $330{\sim}36,420\;cells/mL$ and $2.5{\sim}170.7\;{\mu}g/L$ respectively, and showed the decreasing tendency after flowing through the wetland at almost all stations. Dominant species were 14 taxa at all stations which were Euglena oblonga and Synura spinosa etc. Periphytic algae on the reed were a total 329 taxa which were composed of 295 species, 13 varieties, 3 forma and 17 unidentified species. The species numbers were recorded in order of Chlorophyceae-Bascillariophyceae-Cyanophyceae-Euglenophyceae-Chrysophyceae. The relative abundance (%) was showed a seasonal variation from Cyanophyceae to Bascillariophyceae and to Chlorophyceae. Chlorophyll-a concentrations, ie. the biomass of periphytic algae were ranged from $5.5{\sim}363.8\;mg/m^2$. Dominant species were 16 taxa which were Lyngbya angusta of Cyanophyceae in the early investigation, and were changed to Stigeoclonium lubricum of Chlorophyceae, and Nitzschia plea of Bacillariophyceae etc. in the late. Species number, standing crops and chlorophyll-a concentrations of phytoplankton and perphytic algae were shown higher values at the inlet stations than the stations after flowing through the wetland.

To compare the different water environments in the Jigsaw stream (st. 1, 2) and Jujin stream (st. 3, 4) crossing over the Byeonsan-Bando and Seonunsan parklands, the physico-chemical factors and the species compositions of epilithic diatoms were analyzed from March 2009 to February 2010. The mean values of conductivity (681.1 ${\mu}S\;cm^{-1}$), suspended solids (27.83 mg $L^{-1}$), biological oxygen demand (3.15 mg $L^{-1}$), total nitrogen (3.24 mg $L^{-1}$), total phosphorus (0.24 mg $L^{-1}$) and chlorophyll-${\alpha}$ (12.99 mg $m^{-3}$ ) in Jujin stream were significantly higher than each element in Jigsaw stream. Eighty taxa were classified into 73 species and seven varieties belonging to 24 genera, eight families, three suborders and two orders in Jigsaw stream. Eighty eight taxa were classified into 81 species and seven varieties belonging to 22 genera, seven families, three suborders and two orders in Jujin stream. Biological water quality assessments revealed that Jigsaw stream was ${\beta}$~${\alpha}$-oligosaprobic and Jujin stream was ${\beta}$-mesosaprobic. Dominant and diversity indices were indicated from 0.25~0.81 and from 1.73~4.14 in Jigsaw stream, respectively, and from 0.29~0.64 and from 2.72~4.02 in Jujin stream, respectively. Jujin stream was more eutrophic than those of Jigsaw stream. The different water environments between the two streams could be due to the different ecosystems of the neighboring basins of each stream crossing over in the mountain. Further studies should investigate the water environments of two streams by continuous and regular monitoring to analyze the different ecosystem mechanisms.
