Most test methods for plant available soil phosphate are based on the extraction with a chemical solution. The objective of this study is to evaluate available phosphate of various tests at different soil phosphate levels. Two experiments were conducted as follows: i) Extracting capacities of soil phosphate tests - Mehlich III, Mehlich II, Bray I, Olsen, Kelowna, and Modified Lancaster(Mod. Lancaster) - were compared with that of Lancaster test for the soils collected from 32 paddy and 27 upland fields with various soil chemical properties. ii) Field trials on comparing to phosphate uptake by plant were accomplished by cultivating rice and corn plants in the pots filled with the soils. Available phosphate of Lancaster test was significantly correlated with those of Mehlich III, Mehlich II, Bray I, Olsen, Kelowna, and Mod. Lancaster. In upland soils, available phosphates of all the tests were curvilinearly regressed with phosphate uptake by corn. The determination coefficients ($R^2$) of the regression equation between available phosphate in soils and phosphate uptake by plants were ranged from 0.861 (Mehlich III) to 0.741 (Olsen). In paddy soils, the available phosphate measured by Mehlich III and Lancaster was significantly correlated with phosphate uptake by rice. In conclusion, Lancaster and Mehlich III tests could be used for predicting available phosphate in upland and paddy soils.
In order to monitor the pesticide residues in rice paddy soils and paddy waters in Korea and evaluate leachabilities to groundwater of the pesticides detected, paddy soils and paddy waters were collected twice from 40 sites of rice growing paddy fields in July and August in 2011, respectively. Pesticide residues in the samples were analyzed by multi-residue method with GC and HPLC. Five pesticides, such as butachlor, cypermethrin, iprobenfos, oxadiazon, and pendimethalin were detected from thirteen paddy soils and detection rate was about 16.3%, while no pesticide was detected in paddy water. As a results of the estimation of leachabilities for the pesticides detected using GUS (groundwater ubiquity score), their GUSs were less than 1.3, representing they have no potentials to leach into groundwater.
The contribution of soil organic matter on the soil surface charge characteristic of paddy and upland soils weathered from granite or limestone was evaluated. The surface charge characteristics of the soils with and without soil organic matter by pre-treatment with hydrogen peroxide was determined at pH 3.5~9.0 range using the ion adsorption method. Regardless of soil organic matter removal, the soil surface negative charge increased linearly by the increase of pH with high statistical significance at all kinds of soils. Here, the differential increasement of soil surface negative charge by pH inclease, dCEC/dpH, was proposed as the parameter of pH dependency of the soil surface charge. The dCEC/dpH of soils with organic matter was in the range of 0.91~4.59, while it was dramatically decreased to the range 0.16~1.91 by the removal of organic matter. The soil surface charge derived from soil organic matter ranged from 15% to 82% to the total amount of surface charge. The magnitude of surface charge carried by 1% of soil organic matter showed considerable differences between soils from 0.22 to $5.03cmol^+\;kg^{-1}$. The effect of soil organic matte on the dCEC/dpH was higher in paddy soils with high oxalic acid extractable Fe than upland soils.

The objective of this study is to develop GLEANS-PADDY model to predict nutrients loading from paddy-field areas. This model is developed by modifying the GLEANS model which is used for uplands, and composed of hydrology and nutrient submodels. The optimal field size for CLEANS-PADDY model application is about up to 50 ha with mild slope, relatively homogeneous Soils and spatially rainfall, and a single crop farming. The CLEAMS model is modified to handle ponded soil surface condition and saturated soil profile in paddy field. In the hydrology submodel of the CLEAMS-PADDY model. the ponded depth routing method is used to handle the ponded water condition of paddy field. To compute potential evapotranspiration the FAO-24 Corrected Blaney-Criddle method is used for paddy field instead of Penman-Monteith method in the CLEAMS model. In the nutrients submodel of the CLEAMS-PADDY model, the soil was assumed saturated and soil profile in the root zone was divided into oxidized and reduced zones.
In order to study the effects of some chemical components of surface soils on the paddy yield in clayey Whadong series developed on old alluvium, NPK fertilizer experiments conducted from 1966 to 1969 were reviewed and discussed, and the results may be summarized as follows. 1. The paddy rice production of Whadong series without fertilizers varied from 156kg to 719kg per 10a. 2. The paddy yields in Whadong series were associated mainly with the contents of organic matter and available phosphorus in surface soils, but not with those of exchangeable K, Ca, and Mg and cation exchange capacity. 3. The contents of organic matter in these soils more effected in the paddy yield than those of phosphorus did. 4. In case less than 2.0% or more than 3.0% of organic matter in surface soils the effect of phosphate application was appreciable. The effect, however, was not recognized from 2.0 to 2.9% of organic matter. And the following suggestions were able to make. a. In case of less than 2.0% of organic matter, the effect was considered to be due to deficiency of available phosphorus in the soil. b. In case of more than 3.0% of organic matter, the greater effect was considered to be due to inhibition of P uptake even in higher P contents in soil. c. Consequently, correlation study of P testing in paddy soil should be limited to the soils which contains less than 2% of organic matter. d. If the contents of organic matter in paddy soils were above 3.0%, the effect of P application was considerable and considered to be due to inhibition of nutrient uptake. Accordingly, it is considered that only the increased application of P does not improve the production of paddy in such soils.
Uniformity and leveled distributions of soil chemicals across paddy fields are critical to manage optimal crop yields, reduce environmental risks and efficiently use water in rice cultivation. In this study, an investigation of spatial distributions on soil chemical properties was conducted to evaluate the effect of land leveling on mitigation of soil chemical property heterogeneity from a remodeled paddy field. The spatial variabilities of chemical properties were analyzed by geostatistical analyses; semivariograms and kriged simulations. The soil samples were taken from a 1 ha paddy field before and after land leveling with sufficient water. The study site was located at Bon-ri site of Dalseong and river sediments were dredged from Nakdong river basins. The sediments were buried into the paddy field after 50 cm of top soils at the paddy field were removed. The top soils were recovered after the sediments were piled up. In order to obtain the most accurate spatial field information, the soil samples were taken at every 5 m by 5 m grid point and total number of samples was 100 before and after land leveling with sufficient water. Soil pH increased from 6.59 to 6.85. Geostatistical analyses showed that chemical distributions had a high spatial dependence within a paddy field. The parameters of semivariogram analysis showed similar trends across the properties except pH comparing results from before and after land leveling. These properties had smaller "sill" values and greater "range" values after land leveling than ones from before land leveling. These results can be interpreted as land leveling induced more homogeneous distributions of soil chemical properties. The homogeneous distributions were confirmed by kriged simulations and distribution maps. As a conclusion, land leveling with sufficient water may induce better managements of fertilizer and water use in rice cultivation at disturbed paddy fields.

The aim of this study is to investigate the environmental properties of paddy soils depending on farming methods and seasonal variation. The paddy soils in 11 plots of conventional paddy and 24 plots of organic paddy were sampled and analyzed in four season of March, May, August, and October. The obtained data of soil properties were used for statistical analysis. Analysis of variance showed that only $NH_4-N$ and $P_2O_5$ were significantly different depending on farming methods. However, the differences of all soil properties depending on seasonal variation were strongly significant. Principal component analysis also presented that nitrogen and phosphorus concentration in soils were more significantly influenced by seasonal variation than farming method. Electric conductivity in soil was decreased from March to October. Amounts of soil organic matter in August and October were higher than that in March and May. T-N was decreased from March to October. $NH_4-N$ and $NO_3-N$ in the soil of both conventional and organic paddy were higher in May than other seasons. T-P concentration was found to be highest in August, but $P_2O_5$ concentration was lowest in August. It can be concluded that seasonal variation should be considered for analysis and comparison of soil environmental properties.

BACKGROUND: Methane ($CH_4$) emission is calculated using the default $CH_4$ emission factor as recommended by the International Panel on Climate Change(IPCC guidelines). However, the default emission factor has been derived using including the data from other countries having different soil and environmental conditions and may not reflect the real $CH_4$ emission rates in Korea. The objective of this study was to estimate the baseline emission factor of $CH_4$ in Korean paddy soils during rice cultivation. METHODS AND RESULTS: Methane emission patterns were characterized in four different paddy soils across country for a consecutive 3 years during the rice cultivation period. Rice plants were cultivated under continuous flooding and fertilized using the recommended chemical fertilization in Korea ($N-P_2O_5-K_2O$=90-45-57kg/ha). The mean $CH_4$ emission rate was 2.32 kg $CH_4$/ha/day and the uncertainty of the investigated data was 21.7%, with a valuable error range at 1.82-2.82 kg $CH_4$/ha/day with a 95% confidence interval. CONCLUSION(S): Conclusively, the Korean paddy soils' baseline emission factor of $CH_4$ is approximately 2.32 kg $CH_4$/ha/day and can be used to estimate the $CH_4$ emissions more exactly.
Polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons(PAHs) have been analyzed to assess vertical distribution of them with different land uses. The soils were collected from three layers; surface $(0{\sim}5cm)$, intermediate $(6{\sim}10cm)$, and deep $(11{\sim}15cm)$ layer, respectively considering land use; paddy, upland, and mountain in each site. Total 89 samples of soil from 10 sites were analyzed. Overall mean of ${\sum}PAHs$ were 137 (range $8.87{\sim}625{\mu}g\;kg^{-1}$), 203 (range $16.5{\sim}645{\mu}g\;kg^{-1}$), and $83.4{\mu}g\;kg^{-1}$ (range $6.65{\sim}667{\mu}g\;kg^{-1}$) for paddy, upland, and mountain soil, respectively. The dominant PAHs were fluoroanthene/benzo(b)fluoroanthene>pyrene>indeno(1, 2, 3-cd) pyrene in paddy, fluoroanthene/pyrene>benzo(b)fluoroanthene>chrysene in upland, and benzo(b)fluoroanthene>pyrene>chrysene in mountain soil, whereas the profile was quite similar for each other except that indeno(1, 2, 3-cd)pyrene and benzo(ghi)perylene are relatively higher in the paddy soils. Although the concentration gradient by depth was not observed in the paddy and upland soils because perturbation of soil layer by tillage, significant decrease was in the deep layer relative to the surface and intermediate layer. However, the concentration gradient of PAHs by soil depth was clearly shown in mountain soil without experiencing disturbance of tillage.

Field monitoring was performed to evaluate the chemical properties of 260 paddy soils every 4 years from 1999 to 2015 in Gyeongnam province. Soil chemical properties, including soil pH, electrical conductivity, amount of organic matter (OM), available phosphate ($P_2O_5$), exchangeable potassium (K), calcium (Ca), magnesium (Mg) and sodium (Na), and available silicate ($SiO_2$) were analyzed. In 2015, the average values of pH, OM, available $P_2O_5$, exchangeable K, Ca, and Mg, and available $SiO_2$ was 5.8, $30g\;kg^{-1}$, $222mg\;kg^{-1}$, $0.37cmol_c\;kg^{-1}$, $6.5cmol_c\;kg^{-1}$, and $1.4cmol_c\;kg^{-1}$, $252mg\;kg^{-1}$, respectively. The frequency distribution within optimum range of paddy soils was 49.2%, 20.8%, 18.5%, and 5.8% for soil pH, OM, available $P_2O_5$, and available $SiO_2$, respectively. The available $P_2O_5$ concentrations in 2015 was excess level with portion of 58% and did not alter significantly during the experimental period. Although the average of available $SiO_2$ concentration has tended to increase with every year, the insufficient proportion of available $SiO_2$ concentration in 2015 was 48%. These results indicated that a balanced management of soil chemical properties can properly control the amount of fertilizer applied for sustainable agriculture in paddy field.
