  • The polar transmitter is applied to the narrowband communication systems such as GSM (Global System for Mobile Communications), EDGE (Enhanced Data Rates for GSM Evolution), and GPRS (General Packet Radio Service). To apply polar transmitter for the wideband communication like OFDM (Orthogonal Frequency Division Multiplexing) where the high PAPR (Peak-to-Average Power Ratio) problem occurs, this paper proposes a windowed-sinc function based PAPR reduction scheme. The proposed algorithm mitigates the effect of excessive suppression due to successive peaks or relatively high peaks of the signal. The BER (Bit Error Rate) and EVM (Error Vector Magnitude) performances are measured for various window types and lengths. The simulation results demonstrate that the proposed algorithm achieves significant improvement in terms of BER and PAPR reduction performance with similar spectrum performance to the conventional peak windowing scheme.

  • The packet loss and the disconnection during handoff are the most critical problems which degrade the video quality in wireless video streaming. To cope with these problems, we propose an efficient video streaming method in this paper, which does not only dynamically adjust the video transmission rate based on the raptor forward error correction (FEC) level, but also minimize the error propagation during handoff. Firstly, the channel bandwidth of the wireless broadband internet, called WiBro, is estimated by analyzing channel parameters including the carrier to interference and noise ratio (CINR) and the handoff. Secondly, the streaming server adjusts the next transmission rate according to the estimated channel bandwidth and the raptor FEC level to avoid packet error. Also, the encoder performs the intra refresh method that inserts an intra frame (I-frame) right after handoff to reduce the error propagation effectively. Experimental results indicate that the proposed method can improve the performance of the video streaming over WiBro network.

  • To determine a suitable waveform for Internet of Things (IoT) transmission over low-Earth orbit (LEO) satellites, this paper reports the results of a performance comparison between chirp spread spectrum (CSS)-based LoRa and direct sequence spread spectrum (DSSS)-based Ingenu. The performance of both waveforms was measured in terms of the packet error rate, throughput, and packet loss rate, considering the Doppler effect caused by the high speed of LEO satellites and the interference among multiple terminals. Simulation results indicate that the DSSS scheme is more suitable than the CSS scheme for high-traffic IoT services because of its robustness against interference among multiple terminals. However, the CSS scheme is more suitable than the DSSS scheme for high-mobility IoT services because of its robustness against the Doppler effect. We discuss various solutions, such as the preprocessing of Doppler effect and avoidance of packet collision, to enhance the performance of the DSSS and CSS schemes. The simulation results of the proposed solution show that the enhanced DSSS scheme can be a proper waveform in IoT transmission over LEO satellites for both the high-traffic and high-mobility services.

  • The use of multi-level modulation scheme in the wireless LAN(Local Area Networks) system requires an accurate channel estimation. In this paper, we present sequential least squares(LS) channel estimation scheme based on decision-directed channel tracking scheme. The proposed scheme improves the performance of the conventional LS estimator for wireless LAN. In addition, its structure is suitable for the high-rate wireless LAN. Simulation results show that the proposed scheme achieves about IdB Packet Error Rate(PER) gain compared to the LS scheme in a frequency selective channel.

  • Due to the recent advance in wireless communication technology, it is now more demanding to enjoy the high quality of service in the wireless Internal. TCP, which many Internet applications depend on for the end-to-end transport service, is optimized for the wired environment. Consequently, TCP suffers from severe performance degradation in the wireless environment where the bit error rate is relatively high and the burst errors frequently take place. In this paper, we propose a Robust TCP algorithm, which can effectively react against the burst error and significantly improve the TCP performance in wireless Internet. It is shown through the simulations that the Robust TCP performs well in the wireless environment, especially under the burst error condition.

  • In this paper, we design the physical layer of Guardian modem for wireless public networks. The physical layer is composed of a dual-band RF (Radio Frequency) transceiver and a baseband-processor with quasi-orthogonal codes. The 2.4/5GHz dual-band RF transceiver can overcome the communication difficulty of dense 2.4GHz band for wireless public environment. Also the quasi-orthogonal code can reduce the required ASIC (Application Specific Integrated Circuit) design area. Finally, we analyze the performance of the developed system in viewpoint of data rate, BER (Bit Error Rate), PER (Packet Error Rate). Moreover we verify the performance of the dual-band RF communication.

  • IEEE 802.11 wireless LANs support 20, 40, 80 and 160MHz bandwidth transmission. In general, the data rate increases as the transmission bandwidth increases. However, the transmission power spectral density decreases, which may lead to increasing packet errors and retransmissions. In this paper, we derive a mathematical model of energy consumption with consideration of various factors such as transmission bandwidth, packet error rate and data size. Based on the model, we design a scheme to adapt a transmission bandwidth for each frame transmission. The scheme estimates packet error rates for different bandwidth cases, updates the table of energy consumption and selects the best bandwidth for the next transmission. The simulation study with VoIP traffic shows the energy consumption of the scheme under various environments.

  • Reliable transport protocols such as TCP are tuned to Perform well in traditional networks where packet losses occur mainly because of congestion. In a wireless network, however, packet losses will occur more often due to reasons such as the high bit error rate and the handoff rather than due to congestion. When using TCP over wireless network, TCP responds to losses due to the high bit error rate and the handoff by invoking congestion control and avoidance algorithms, resulting in the degraded end-to-end performance in the wireless network. There have been several schemes for improving TCP performance over wireless links. Among them, SNOOP Is a very promising scheme because of the localized retransmission. In this thesis, an efficient scheme is proposed by modifying SNOOP scheme. The invocation of congestion control mechanism is now minimized by knowing the cause of packet loss.

  • In this paper, a new embedded wavelet packet image coder algorithm is proposed for an effective image coder using correlation between partitioned coefficients. This new algorithm presents parent-child relationship for reducing image reconstruction error using relations between individual frequency sub-bands. By parent-child relationship, every coefficient is partitioned and encoded for the zerotree data structure. It is shown that the proposed wavelet packet image coder algorithm achieves low bit rates and rate-distortion. It also demonstrates higher PSNR under the same bit rate and an improvement in image compression time. The perfect rate control is compared with the conventional method. These results show that the encoding and decoding processes of the proposed coder are simpler and more accurate than the conventional ones for texture images that include many mid and high-frequency elements such as aerial and satellite photograph images. The experimental results imply the possibility that the proposed method can be applied to real-time vision system, on-line image processing and image fusion which require smaller file size and better resolution.
