  • To cope with channel variation, wireless networks such as IEEE 802.11 WLAN provide multiple transmission rates by employing different channel modulation and coding schemes. However, the coexistence of different transmission rates degrades the total system performance of the network. In order to eliminate this performance abnormality and improve protocol capacity, we propose a new Packet transmission algorithm, the RAT(Rate-Adapted Transmission) scheme. The RAT scheme distributes the wireless channel fairly based on the channel occupancy time. Moreover, it efficiently transmits packets even in a single station using rate-based queue management. Therefore, the RAT scheme obtains not only the inter-rate contention gain among stations but also the intra-rate contention gain among connections in a single station.

  • Multi-layered video coding that provides scalability across the visual content has emerged for easily adaptive service over current heterogeneous network. However, the network is still error prone environment so that video service may suffer packet loss or erroneous decoding of the video. Especially distortion caused by the burst error may propagate to several pictures until intra refreshing, which will raise a terrific degradation of picture quality. To overcome the problem at terminal independently, we propose a new error concealment algorithm for the multi-layered video coding. The proposed method uses the similarity of between layers in the multi-layered video coding and POCS (Projections Onto Convex Sets) which is a powerful error concealment tool, but heavily dependent on initial values. To find adequate initial value which can reduce iteration times as well as achieve high performance, we took consideration into both features of layered approach coding and the correlation in neighbor blocks. The simulation results show that the proposed concealment method works well.

  • Recently, most of the video services are usually transmitted in wireless networks. In networks environment, a packet of video is likely to be lost during transmission. For this reason, this paper proposes a new Error Concealment (EC) algorithm. For High Efficiency Video Coding (HEVC) bitstreams, the proposed algorithm includes Adaptive Prediction Unit-based Motion Vector Extrapolation (APMVE) and Boundary Matching (BM) algorithm, which employs both the temporal and spatial correlation. APMVE adaptively decides a Error Concealment Basic Unit (ECBU) by using the PU information of the previous frame and BM employing the spatial correlation is applied to only unreliable blocks. Simulation results show that the proposed algorithm provides the higher subjective quality by reducing blocking artifacts which appear in other existing algorithms.

  • In this paper, we propose a novel algorithm to automatically generate an RTP timestamp value that is required for the RTP packetization in order to transmit SVC video over various If networks such as Internet. Unlike the conventional single layer coding algorithms such as H.263, MPEG-4 and H.264, SVC generates a multi-layered single bitstream which is composed of a base layer and one or more enhancement layers in order to simultaneously provide temporal, spatial, and SNR scalability. Especially, in order to provide temporal scalability based on hierarchical B-picture prediction structure, the encoding (or transmission) and display order of pictures in SVC coding is completely decoupled. Thus, the timestamp value to be specified at the header of each RTP packet in video transmission does not increase monotonically according to the display time instant of each picture. Until now, no method for automatically generating an RTP timestamp when SVC video is loaded in a RTP packet has teen introduced. In this paper, a novel automatic RTP timestamp generation method exploiting the TID (temporal ID) field of the SVC NAL unit header is proposed to accommodate the SVC video transmission.

  • Layered video coding schemes allow the video information to be transmitted in multiple video bitstreams to achieve scalability. they are attractive in theory for two reasons. First, they naturally allow for heterogeneity in networks and receivers in terms of client processing capability and network bandwidth. Second, they correspond to optimal utilization of available bandwidth when several video qualify levels are desired. In this paper we propose a scalable video codec architectures with motion estimation, which is suitable for real-time audio and video communication over packet networks. The coding algorithm is compatible with ITU-T recommendation H.263+ and includes various techniques to reduce complexity. Fast motion estimation is Performed at the H.263-compatible base layer and used at higher layers, and perceptual macroblock skipping is performed at all layers before motion estimation. Error propagation from packet loss is avoided by Periodically rebuilding a valid Predictor in Intra mode at each layer.

  • This paper proposes an algorithm for the robust transmission of video in error Prone environment using multiple description codingby optimal split of DCT coefficients and rate-distortionoptimization framework. In MDC, a source signal is split Into several coded streams, which is called descriptions, and each description is transmitted to the decoder through different channel. Between descriptions, structured correlations are introduced at the encoder, and the decoder exploits this correlation to reconstruct the original signal even if some descriptions are missing. It has been shown that the MDC is more resilient than the singe description coding(SDC) against severe packet loss ratecondition. But the excessive redundancy in MDC, i.e., the correlation between the descriptions, degrades the RD performance under low PLR condition. To overcome this Problem of MDC, we propose a hybrid MDC method that controls the SDC/MDC switching according to channel condition. For example, the SDC is used for coding efficiency at low PLR condition and the MDC is used for the error resilience at high PLR condition. To control the SDC/MDC switching in the optimal way, RD optimization framework are used. Lagrange optimization technique minimizes the RD-based cost function, D+M, where R is the actually coded bit rate and D is the estimated distortion. The recursive optimal pet-pixel estimatetechnique is adopted to estimate accurate the decoder distortion. Experimental results show that the proposed optimal split of DCT coefficients and SD/MD switching algorithm is more effective than the conventional MU algorithms in low PLR conditions as well as In high PLR condition.

  • Most video services are transmitted in wireless networks. In a network environment, a packet of video is likely to be lost during transmission. For this reason, numerous error concealment (EC) algorithms have been proposed to combat channel errors. On the other hand, most existing algorithms cannot conceal the whole missing frame effectively. To resolve this problem, this paper proposes a new Adaptive Prediction Unit-based Motion Vector Extrapolation (APMVE) algorithm to restore the entire missing frame encoded by High Efficiency Video Coding (HEVC). In each missing HEVC frame, it uses the prediction unit (PU) information of the previous frame to adaptively decide the size of a basic unit for error concealment and to provide a more accurate estimation for the motion vector in that basic unit than can be achieved by any other conventional method. The simulation results showed that it is highly effective and significantly outperforms other existing frame recovery methods in terms of both objective and subjective quality.

  • H.264 is the prominent video coding standard in various applications such as real-time video streaming and digital multimedia broadcasting, since it provides enhanced compression performance, error resilience tools, and network adaptation. Since compressed video stream is vulnerable to packet loss, error resilience and error concealment(EC) tools are essential for the transmission of video over the Internet. In this paper, we first propose a simple temporal EC method that improves the EC performance for intra-frame in H.264 when the amount of motion is relatively small. Then we propose a new hybrid EC method for intra-frame in H.264, which combines the spatial EC and temporal EC adaptively. The simulations are performed in packet-lossy environments, and the proposed hybrid EC method shows about 0.5-4dB PSNR improvement compared to the conventional spatial EC method that is used for intra-frame in H.264.

  • This paper analyzes the rate adaptation scheme and suggests applicable strategy of the MCS(Modulation and Coding Scheme) for improving DCF throughput in the IEEE 802.11ad and 802.11ad wireless LAN. IEEE 802.11ac and 802.11ad wireless LAN provide MCS technique that dynamically adjusts modulation level and code rate to the time-varying channel conditions in order to obtain considerably high data rates. But these standards did not provide rate adaptation algorithm, so this paper surveyes rate adaptation algorithm and suggests MCS scheme applied to IEEE 802.11ac and 802.11ad wireless LAN. Specially A MAC(Medium Access Control) layer throughput is evaluated over error-prone channel in the IEEE 802.11ac-based wireless LAN. In this evaluation, DCF (Distributed Coordination Function) protocol and A-MPDU (MAC Protocol Data Unit Aggregation) scheme are used. Using theoretical analysis method, the MAC saturation throughput is evaluated with the PER (Packet Error Rate) on the condition that the number of station, transmission probability, the number of parallel beams and the number of frames in each A-MPDU are variables.

  • When compressed video data is transmitted over error-prone network such as wireless channel, data is likely to be lost, so the quality of reconstructed picture is severely decreased. It is specially so in case that important information such as motion vector or macroblock mode is lost. H.264/AVC standard includes DP as error resilient technique for protecting important information from error in which data is labeled according to its relative importance. But DP technique requires a network that supports different reliabilities of transmitted data. In general, the benefits of UEP is sought by sending multiple times of same packets corresponding to important information. In this paper, we propose MDC technique based on data partitioning technique. The proposed method encodes motion vector of H.264/AVC standard into multiple parts using MDC and transmits each part as independent packet. Even if partial packet is lost, the proposed scheme can decode the compressed bitstream by using estimated motion vector with partial packets correctly transmitted, so that achieving improved performance of error concealment with minimal effect of channel error. Also in decoding process, the proposed multiple description matching increases the accuracy of estimated lost motion vector and quality of reconstructed video.
