The 44Md plasmid of Bacillus thruingiensis var. kurstaki HD-1(B. t k HD-1) was partially digested with Sau3AI and the fragments were cloned into E. coli HB101 on vector pBR322. Of 2, 950 clones with a recombinant pBR322, only one clone KC1 was determined to have the gene for crystal toxic proteins from the 44Md plasmid of B. t k HD-1 at the BamHI site of pBR322. The recombinant pBR322 was named pKC1 and its molecular size was 12kb. The KC1 produced a protein which was toxic to the silkworm and antigenically similar to the crystal toxic protein of B. t k HD-1. Also, electrophoretic mobility of the KC1 protein was apparently the same as that of the crystal toxic protein of B. t k HD-1.
Dignosis of migraine is only based on the medical history, and objective methods to aid the clinical diagnosisare absent. Although transcranial Doppler ultrasonography (TCD) abnormalities in headache-free migraineurs have been reported previously, diagnostic criteria for migraine is still lacking and this may limit the practical application of TCD for migraine. We prospectively studied several abnormal TCD indices in interictal migraineurs and their sensitivity and specificity to define the optimal diagnostic criteria. Young (20 yrs$age=29.0{\pm}6.1yrs$) were compared to 69 controls (M:F=25:44, Mean $age=31.2{\pm}5.5yrs$). Elevated MFV (> 2SD)was observed in 63% of migraineurs while n 12% of control (p<0.01). High AI (>25%) or high HI (>3.0) was present in 17% of migraineurs, while 3% and none in controls (p<0.01). Sensitivity of elevated MFV, high AI, and high HI was 63%, 17%, 17% and specificity was 88%, 97%, 100%, respectively. If all these indices were combined, sensitivity and specificity reached 69% and 86%. These preliminary results suggest pathophysiological implication of vasospasm in interictal migraineurs, and TCD may be practically applicable for migraine. Optimal diagnostic criteria and therapeutic options for patients with abnormal TCD findings remain to bo determined.
Kampo medicine, a Japanese traditional herbal medicine, has been used in clinical practice in Japan. The most appropriate Kampo formula should be chosen for each individual by the four diagnostic procedures. Fuku shin, the abdominal exam, is one of the most important approaches in the procedures. There are several abdominal conformations (signs) when administering Fuku shin. In Kampo medicine, psychiatric illness-marked by depression and anxiety-has been shown to be related with an abdominal conformation, Shin ka hi koh (Epigastric Obstructive Hardness). The aim was to see the occurrence of abdominal conformations in each level of depression and anxiety symptoms. Two hundred fifteen patients were assigned to high-, moderate-, or low-level psychiatric comorbidity based on the Hospital Anxiety and Depression Scale and were studied regarding the occurrence of major abdominal conformations. Moderate and high psychopathological groups showed the higher occurrence of Shin ka hi koh [Low, 21%; Moderate, 67%; High, 74%] ($p$ < 0.0001). In conclusion, moderate and high psychopathological patients showed the higher occurrence of a specific abdominal sign.
We characterize ($r,w$)-nuclear operators acting from a Banach space whose dual has weak type $q$ into a Banach space of weak type $p$ by the asymptotic behaviour of their entropy numbers.
An expression vector in a mammalian cell was constructed using the origin of replication (OR) and the promoters of SV40. The plasmid pSVOE was constructed by inserting SV40 DNA fragment (1, 118bp) containing SV40 OR and promoters into pBR322-1, and then a multiple cloning sequence was inserted at the immediate downstream of the late promoter of SV40 in the pSVOE vector. The plasmid was named pSVML. As a selection marker, thymidine kinase gene of herpes simplex virus with its promoter was inserted into EcoRI site of pSVML and the recombinant was named pSVML-TKp. To test the expression capacity of foreigen gene inserted at the multiple cloning site of pSVML, the thymidine kinase gene without its own promoter was inserted at the BamHI site of pSVML. The recombinant was named pSVML-TK. These plasmids, pSVML-TKp and pSVML-TK, were transfected into COS cells with calcium phosphate precipitation method. The thymidine kinase activity was significantly increased in both transfected cells.
We isolated a 10 kb Bam HI fragment originated from the chromosome of a $H_2O$$^2$-resistant mutant strain of Streptomyces coelicolor, which confer $H_2O$$^2$-resistance to S. lividance upon transformation. Among various subclones ot 10kb Bam HI fragment tested for their $H_2O$$^2$-resistant phenotype in S. lividans, a subclone containing 5.2 kb Bam HI-BglII fragment was found to be responsible for $H_2O$$^2$-resistance. The plasmid containing this 5.2 kb fragment was then transformed into S. coellicolor A3(2) at early and tested for their phenotype of $H_2O$$^2$-resistance and the change in various enzymes whose activity can be stained in the gel. We found out that the 5.2 kb insert DNA conferred $H_2O$$^2$-resisstance in S. coelicolor A3(2) at early phase of cell growth. The presence of this DNA also resulted in higher level of peroxidase compared with the wild type cell containing parental vector (pIJ702) only. Esterase activity was also higher in this clone. However, alcohol dehydrogenase activity decreased compared with the wild type. These results suggest that the presence of a gene in 5.2 kb BamHI-BglII DNA fragment causes multiple changes in S. coelicolor related to its response against hydrogen peroxide. The result also implies that not only peroxidase but also esterase may function in the defencse meahsnism agianst $H_2O$$^2$-.

For the application of the commercially modified starch in frozen and retort foods, apparent viscosity and water loss were measured at each stages of heating, sterilization and freezing-thawing stages. Apparent viscosity showed the exponential increase with concentration and the slopes of apparent viscosity against concentration in the Firm-Tex(hydroxypropyl distarch phosphate), Hi-Flo(acetylated distarch adipate) and Colflo 67(acetylated distarch adipate) from waxy maize starch were higher than those of Amyloacetate M20(starch acetate) and X-amylo 250(distarch phosphare) from potato starch. In the presence of 1 or 2% NaCl, X-amylo 250 among modified starches showed the increase in water loss and the decrease in apparent viscosity, whereas Colflo 67, Hi-Flo and Firm-Tex were little affected by NaCl. In the presence of 1 or 2% sucrose, water loss and apparent viscosity of the modified starches were not affected. In the range of pH 4~8, water loss and apparent viscosity of the modified starches had no change but the differences were detected to some extent between each of heating, sterilization and freezing-thawing stages. In the apparent viscosity and water loss of the modified starches after 3 week storage from heating and sterilization, Hi-Flo, Amyloacetate M20 and X-amylo 250 were not changed at the storage period, and the overall acceptability of retort food containing the modified starches such as Firm-Tex and Amyloacetate M20 were favored more than others. In the apparent viscosity and water loss of the modified starches which have been frozen and thawed three times repeatedly, Colflo 67, Hi-Flo and Firm-Tex were not changed in freezingthawing, and the overall acceptability of frozen food containing Firm-Tex was most favored.
Canine respiratory coronavirus (CRCoV) is a significant pathogen that causes respiratory diseases in dogs, collectively known as a canine infectious respiratory disease. The virus is highly contagious and exhibits high seroprevalence worldwide. Currently, bovine coronavirus (BCoV) enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay (ELISA) kits are used to detect CRCoV antibodies. However, BCoV-ELISA kits cannot differentiate between infections caused by BCoV and those caused by CRCoV. In this study, we evaluated the hemagglutination inhibition (HI) test for CRCoV by comparing it with the virus neutralization (VN) test. Subsequently, we evaluated the seroprevalence of CRCoV in 383 dog serum samples collected from South Korea utilizing the HI test. The HI test for CRCoV showed a strong correlation with the VN test (R = 0.83, p < 0.001). The analysis of seroprevalence revealed that 52.2% (95% confidence interval [CI], 47.2%-57.1%) of the Korean dog serum samples were positive. The seroprevalence exhibited varied with age, with a positivity rate of 43.9% in dogs under 1 year of age and 66.7% in dogs aged 3 to 5 years (odds ratio, 2.54; 95% CI, 1.43-4.59). In conclusion, the HI test to monitor CRCoV antibody proved to be closely related to the VN test. Furthermore, over half of the dogs in Korea tested positive for CRCoV antibodies. These findings contribute to a better understanding of the sero-epidemiology of CRCoV.
In this paper, we construct a new exotic smooth 4-manifold X which is homeomorphic, but not diffeomorphic, to ${\mathbb{C}}\mathbb{P}^2{\sharp}13\overline{\mathbb{C}\mathbb{P}}^2$. Moreover the manifold X has vanishing Seiberg-Witten invariants for all $Spin^c$-structures of X and has no symplectic structure.

The characteristics of the diesel spray have affected certain aspects of engine performance, such as the power, fuel consumption, and emissions. Therefore, this study was performed to investigate the effects of various injection parameters. In order to obtain the effect of injection parameters on diesel spray characteristics, the experiment is performed by using a high temperature and pressure chamber. The behaviors of the spray are visualized by using a high speed video camera, spray angle, penetration, and various other things. The results of the experiment are summarized as follows. (1) The correlation of the spray penetration can be expressed as follows. $$0< t $$t_{b} (2) The correlation of the spray angle can be expressed as follows $$T_a=293K\;tan({\theta}/2)=0.59({\rho}a/{\rho}f)^{0.437}$$$$T_a=473K\;tan({\theta}/2)=0.588({\rho}a/{\rho}f)^{0.404}$$ (3) The measured macro characteristics that include the spray tip penetration and spray angle corresponded with the established correlations.
