  • Physicochemical phenomena in soils are dependent upon pH when using electrokinetic extraction for the contaminants removal especially for heavy metals. pH variation in soils is affected on H$\^$+/ and OH ̄ ions produced by electrolysis reaction and buffer capacity of soil. High amount of heavy metals are retained in the soils if the soil buffer capacity remains high enough to resist a change in pH. Therefore, accurate pH estimation of soil is important in the application of electrokinetic mechanism for decontamination and understanding of subsurface physicochemical characteristics is also required as well as considering buffer capacity for the enhanced methods application. For these, buffer capacity and pH distribution were measured for the four soils, and also compared with modeling results. The results of buffer modeling were good agreement with experimental data. It is showed that four soils were effected by buffer capacity

  • Kinetic and thermodynamic studies have been made on the effect of the inosine product on the activity of adenosine deaminase in a 50 mM sodium phosphate buffer, pH 7.5, at $27^{\circ}C$ using UV spectrophotometry and isothermal titration calorimetry (ITC). A competitive inhibition was observed for inosine as a product of the enzymatic reaction. A graphical-fitting method was used for determination of the binding constant and enthalpy of inhibitor binding by using isothermal titration microcalorimetry data. The dissociation-binding constant is equal to $140\;{\mu}M$ by the microcalorimetry method, which agrees well with the value of $143\;{\mu}M$ for the inhibition constant that was obtained from the spectroscopy method.

  • Caustic Soda Treatment Systems need a concentration measurement device in order to monitor the weight reduction amount of polyester fabrics. Since the reduction process requires several concentration measurements, we have to do the unit titration fast and exactly. Therefore, a proposition of estimation algorithm for finding the equivalent point in the titration process is needed. In this paper, we used the cardinal spline algorithm, to estimate the proper curve with the measured pH-values after each injection of titration sdution, to predict the equivalent point. While the processing time is elapsed, several equivalent points are estimated and drawed the line graph of fabrics weight reduction automatically. Finally, we designed the hardware and the software of an automatic titration system that can generate the reduction ending signal of Caustic Soda Treatment System.

  • Ion-Sensitive Field-Effect Transistors(ISFETs) with LPCVD silicon nitride as a sensitive gate were fabricated on the basis of a CMOS process. The silicon nitride was deposited directly on a poly silicon gate-electrode. Using a specially designed measuring cell, the hydrogen ions sensing properties of the ISFET in liquid could be investigated without any bonding or encapsulation. At first, th sensitivity was estimated by simualtions according to the site-binding theory and the experimental results were analysed and compared with simulated results. The measured dta were in good agreement with the simulated results. The silicon nitride based ISFET has good linearity evaluated from correlation factor ($\geq$0.9998) and a mean pH-sensitivity of 56.8mV/pH. The maximum hysteresis width between forward(pH=3\longrightarrowpH=11)- and backward(pH=11\longrightarrowpH=3) titration was 16.7mV at pH=6.54.

  • Surface charge characteristics of Ultisol(Luisiana soil from Philippines), Alfisol(Maahas soil from Philippines), and Inceptisol(Yongii soil from Korea) were studied by way of potentiometric titration, backtitration technique, and ion adsorption method(or CEC - AEC method). The PZNC(point of zero net charge) values determined by ion adsorption method were much lower than the natural pHs in all soils, indicating that all soil samples bore net negative surface charge. The PZSE (point of zero salt effect) values determined by potentiometric titration and backtitration technique were identical in Luisiana and Yongii soils but not in Maaghas soil. All soils showed higher PZSE values than PZNC values probably due to the influence of permanent negative charge. The permanent charge calculated by the theory of Uehara and Gillman (1980) occupied quite low portion of the CEC measured at pH 7 in all soils. Backtitration technique corrected errors of potentiometric titration at extreme pH. However, it still overestimate the surface charge compared with ion adsorption method. Therefore, the ion adsorption method was recommanded for the surface charge measurement of the usual soils which have high negative charge components.

  • The distribution of the surface charges in two kinds of peats and their physico-chemical properties have a been studied by means of the potentiometric titration and by ion adsorption in different strength of electrolytes. The organic matter contents were 43.3% and 53.7% in Yeong Yang peat and Peong Tack peat, respectively. Their X-ray diffractograms showed that quartz was dominant in both peats, and illite, kaolinite, hydrated-halloysite and feldspars were contained in a trace. Total acidic group contents was 1.257me/g in Poeng Tack peat that was a little more than of Peong Yang heat were pKa values of Yeong Yang and Poeng Tack peat were 13.1 and 12.65, respectively. The titration curves at different ionic strength of electrolytes crossed at pH 3.9 and 4.4 in Yeong Yang peat, and pH 3.8 and 4.0 in Peong Tack peat. The pH ranges of suspensions when the net surfacecharge of the peats varied from positive to negative value were $pH\;4.55{\sim}5.20\;(NaCl)$ and $pH\;3.95{\sim}5.70\;(CaCl_2)$ in Yeong Fang peat, and $pH\;4.15{\sim}5.40\;(NaCl)$ and $pH\;3.80{\sim}4.15\;(CaCl_2)$ in Peong Tack peat. Therefore it is apparent that the zero point of charge of these peats was about pH 4.0.

  • Objectives: This study was aimed at determining the optimum coagulation dosage in a high turbid kaolin water sample using streaming current detection (SCD) as an alternative to the jar test. Methods: SCD is able to optimize coagulant dosing by titration of negatively charged particles. Kaolin particles were used to mimic highly turbid water ranging from 50 to 600 NTU, and polyaluminum chloride (PAC, 17%) was applied as a titrant and coagulant. The coagulation consisted of rapid stirring (5 min at 140 rpm), reduced stirring (20 min at 70 rpm), and settling (60 min). To confirm the coagulation effect, a jar test was also compared with the SCD titration results. Results: SCD titration of kaolin water samples showed that the dose of PAC increased as the pH rose. However, supernatant turbidity less than 1 NTU after coagulation was not achieved for high turbid water by SCD titration. Instead, a conversion factor was used to calculate the optimum PAC dosage for high turbid water by correlating a jar test result with that from an SCD titration. Using this approach, we were able to successfully achieve less than 1 NTU in treated water. Conclusions: For high turbid water influent in a water treatment plant, particularly during summer, the application of SCD control by applying a conversion factor can be more useful than a jar test due to the rapid calculation of coagulation dosage. Also, the interpolation of converted PAC dose could successfully achieve turbidity in the treated water of less than 1 NTU. This result indicates that an SCD system can be effectively used in a water treatment plant even for high turbid water during the rainy season.

  • The main objective of this study was to develop and characterize pH-sensitive biodegradable polymeric materials. For pH-sensitivity, we employed three kinds of moieties: 2-amino-3-(lH-imidazol-4-yl)-propionic acid (H), N-[4-( 4,6-dimethyl-pyrimidin-2ylsulfamoyl)-phenyl]succinamic acid (SM), and 2- {3-[ 4-( 4,6-dimethyl-pyrimidin- 2-ylsulfamoyl)-phenylcarbamoyl]-propionylamino} -3-(3 H - imidazol-4-yl)-propionic acid (SH). The pH -sensitive diblock copolymers were synthesized by ring opening polymerization and coupling reaction from poly(ethylene glycol) (MPEG), $\varepsilon$-caprolactone (CL), D,L-lactide (LA) and pH-sensitive moieties. The pH-sensitive SH molecule was synthesized in a two-step reaction. The first step involved the synthesis of SHM, a methyl ester derivative of SH, by coupling reaction of SM and L-histidine methyl ester dihydrochloride, whereas the second step involved the hydrolysis of the same. The synthesized SM, SHM and SH molecules were characterized by FTIR, $^{1}H$-NMR and $^{13}C$-NMR spectroscopy, whereas diblock copolymers and pH-sensitive diblock copolymer were characterized by $^{1}H$-NMR and GPC analysis. The critical micelle concentrations were determined at various pH conditions by fluorescence technique using pyrene as a probe. The micellization and demicellization studies of pH-sensitive diblock copolymers were also done at different pH conditions. The pH-sensitivity was further established by acid-based titration and DLS analysis.

  • The purpose of this study was to investigate high school students' understanding of acid-base related concepts using three different titration technologies. The test population was composed of 209 students from three classes in the 10th grade. The different titration experiments using indicator, or pH-meter or MBL were performed in each class unit, respectively. The analyses of the effect on the understanding of different titration technologies were carried out by comparing the mean scores of the concept test taken before and after the titration for the three groups. The results of the acid-base related concept test indicated that statistically significant effects on the understanding of the concepts were shown by all groups. Comparing the effect on the comprehension of the three groups, the MBL group showed the most significant effect, while the pH-meter group showed the least significant. It was also attempted to analyze the effect on comprehension of the concepts by the cognitive and the motivational levels of students. This study revealed that the students in the formal operation stage showed higher understanding of the acidbase related concepts, while those in the concrete operation stage showed lower comprehension. It was also shown that the students at the active motivational level scored higher in comprehension than those who had a low score. The results of this study implied that each group showed differently enhanced comprehension of concepts by titration technologies. Therefore, teachers need to promote an appropriate experiment technology for the cognitive and motivational levels of students as well as try to help students express freely their own perspectives.

  • Random copolymers of N-isopropyl acrylamide (NIPAAm) and acrylic acid (AAc) which exhibit temperature- and pH-responsive behavior were synthesized by free-radical polymerization. The copolymers were characterized by means of FT-IR spectrometry and titration. The influence of polyelectrolyte on the lower critical solution temperature (LCST) of pH/temperature-sensitive polymers was investigated in the pH range of 2-12. The LCSTs of PNIPAAm/water in poly(NIPAAm-co-AAc) were determined by cloud-point measurements. A polyelectrolyte complex was prepared by mixing poly(NIPAAm-co-AAc) with poly(allylamine) (PAA) or poly(L-lysine) (PLL) solutions as anionic and cationic polyelectrolytes, respectively. Back titration was performed to determine the content of AAc and to study the effect of comonomer ionization on the LCST. The LCSTs of PNIPAAm/water in the copolymers were strongly affected by pH, presence of polyelectrolyte, AAc content, and charge density on the polymer. The polyelectrolyte complexes were formed at neutral condition. The influence of more hydrophobic PLL as polyelectrolyte on the cloud-point of PNIPAAm/water in the copolymer was stronger than that of poly(allylamine) (PAA).
