  • A preparation method and response characteristics of a glucose sensor which consisted of pH-ISFET and glucose oxidase-immobilized membrane were investigated. The pH-ISFET glucose sensor was fabricated by immbilizing bovine serum albumin and glucose oxidase with glutaraldehyde on gate of the pH-ISFET. Effects of pH and concentration of working buffer and enzyme load on the pontentiometric response of the pH-ISFET glucose sensor were examined. • Reactions between gold (Au) surface plasmon resonance (SPR) chips and bovine serum albumin (BSA) dissolved in solutions of different pH were investigated. The charge on the BSA depends on the pH of the solution in which it is dissolved. Thus, dissolving BSA in different pH solutions resulted in different charges of BSA. Among the BSA dissolved in solutions with pH 4.01, 7.4, and 10.01, the SPR response was the highest for BSA dissolved in the solution of pH 4.01. To eliminate the response variation owing to the difference in the refractive indices of the solutions, phosphate buffered saline (PBS) was injected into the system after the reaction of BSA with the Au SPR chip had happened. In this case too, the BSA dissolved in the solution with pH 4.01 exhibited the highest response. This may be attributed to the non-uniform distribution of ionic patches on the BSA, which can induce electrostatic attraction to the surface even though BSA has a positive charge at pH 4.01, and the absolute values of the net charge of BSA at pH 4.01 and 7.4 were very close.

  • We fabricated the QCM with Langmuir-Blodgett(LB) film deposited at the different subphase pH and investigated the resonant frequency response by the injection of organic gas response. In the $\pi$-A isotherms, the monolayer on the air/water interface had different limiting area per molecule and showed more condensed status as increasing the subphase pH. When palmitic acid LB film was deposited on the QCM, the resonant frequency shift was proportional to the deposited layer and had more resonant frequency shift in the case of the higher pH range as expected. In the resonant frequency for the injection of organic gas, it has been improved in the case of LB film fabricated at the lower subphase pH range and dependant upon the molecular weight of organic gas.

  • Surface renewable nano-$RuO_2$/poly(methyl methacrylate) polymeric composite pH electrodes were prepared. The composite electrode with 53 wt% of nano-$RuO_2$ showed similar good response characteristics to nano-$IrO_2$ composite electrode reported earlier. It showed response slope of -58.7 mV/pH, response time of <1 s, surface renewability of $-57.0{\pm}0.3mV/pH$ (n=5) and long time stability for a month as well as low interferences but high interferences by electrochemically active species like $I^-$ and $Fe(CN){_6}^{3-}$. However, the response slope and time became worse at higher pH than 9 compared to those of nano-$IrO_2$ composite electrodes possibly due to the difference of physical properties resulting from higher content of nano-$RuO_2$ in polymeric composite matrix.

  • The plasma-deposited polymer thin films at platinum surface were investigated as materials blocking access of chloride ions to the platinum surface and preventing their interference with the Nernstian responce of platinum. In the presence of chloride ions, the pH response of a naked platinum was remarkably affected. By comparison of pH responses of coated and uncoated platinum-wire electrodes immersed in solutions with chloride ions, it was found that toluene and ethylbenzene plasma films could improve the pH response of platinum. The pH response of coated platinum electrodes may be explained by the ability of protons, by virtue of their small size, to move through the polymer matrix to the platinum surface.

  • In this research, the pH sensor was developed using CNT nanosheet with Nafion coating for the advanced medical sensor such as a blood gas analyzer. The CNT nanosheet was formed by dielectrophoresis and water-meniscus between cantilever-type electrodes. Then, the process of the heat annealing and the Nafion coating was conducted for reducing contact resistance and giving proton selectivity respectively. We measured the response of the pH sensor as the electrolyte-gated CNT-nanosheet field effect transistor. The sensor showed a linear current ratio in a similar range of the normal blood pH. A calibration method for decreasing of the response variation among sensors has also been introduced. Coefficient of variance of the pH sensor was decreased by applying the calibration method. A linear relation between the calibrated response of the sensors and pH variance was also obtained. Finally, the pH sensor with a high resolution was fabricated and we verify the feasibility of the sensor by applying the calibration method.

  • Membrane electrode based on chitin(po1y-[$1{\rightarrow}4$]-${\beta}$-N-acetyl-D-glucosamine) was prepared by mixing uniformly grounded of chitin (100 mesh) with PVC and DOS. We investigated the potential response of chitin membrane electrode to metal ions. It was observed that the response slopes for $Cd^{2+}$(34.9 mV/decade) and $Cu^{2+}$(34.0 mV/decade) were larger than those for other ions in pH 4 acetate buffer. The potentiometric response of chitin electrode to varying pH was nearly constant in the pH range of 2~12.

  • Microorganisms are significantly affected when the ambient pH of their environment changes. They must therefore be able to sense and respond to these changes in order to survive. Previous investigators have studied various fungal species to define conserved pH-responsive signaling pathways. One of these pathways, known as the Pal/Rim pathway, is activated in response to alkaline pH signals, ultimately targeting the PacC/Rim101 transcription factor. Although the central signaling components are conserved among divergent filamentous and yeast-like fungi, there is some degree of signaling specificity between fungal species. This specificity exists primarily in the downstream transcriptional targets of this pathway, likely allowing differential adaptation to species-specific environmental niches. In this review, the role of the Pal/Rim pathway in fungal pH response is discussed. Also highlighted are functional differences present in this pathway among human fungal pathogens, differences that allow these specialized microorganisms to survive in the various micro-environments of the infected human host.

  • In the present study, the impact of Salmonella Typhimurium on cell-mediated immunity (CMI) was investigated in 5 week-old immuno divergent broiler lines selected for the high and low response to phytohemagglutinin-P. The immune response was assessed in peripheral-blood mononuclear cells (PBMCs) induced with Salmonella Typhimurium at different time intervals (0 h, 0.5 h, 2 h, 4 h, 6 h, 12 h and 24 h). The differential mRNA expression patterns of IFN-${\gamma}$, IL-2 and iNOS were evaluated by quantitative real time PCR. In-vitro production of nitric oxide (NO) was also estimated in the culture supernatant and correlated with iNOS mRNA expression. Present study showed higher production of NO in the high cell-mediated line (HCMI) as compared to the low cell-mediated line (LCMI) upon stimulation with Salmonella Typhimurium. Correspondingly, higher mRNA expression of iNOS and IFN-${\gamma}$ were observed in high response birds (HCMI); but IL-2 was down regulated in this line compared to the low response birds (LCMI). Significantly (p<0.05) higher expression of iNOS, IFN-${\gamma}$ and higher production of NO in high line indicated that the selection for PHA-P response might be employed for increasing the immune competence against Salmonella Typhimurium in chicken flocks.
