All of the water and stone-dust samples with or without flocculant, in and around quarry mines, were analyzed for total concentrations of heavy metals, cyanide(CN), toxic organic compounds and organic phosphorus. Extraction experiments on stone-dust by EDTA and various pH solutions were also carried out, in order to evaluate the contaminant leaching from the long-term heaped stone-dust within quarry mines. The concentrations of $Cr^{6+}$, Hg, CN, TCE/PCE and total phosphorus in all samples (water and stone-dust) were under detection limits, confirming no environmental contamination from stone-dust in quarry mine areas. Lead and cadmium were not detected in all water samples. Copper and zinc were found in some water samples, and arsenic was detected in a few water samples. But they also showed levels much lower than the drinking water standard. Results of the extraction experiments by EDTA and pH solutions showed that Pb, Cr, Cd, Cu and Zn were leached out in less amounts or under detection limits. Arsenic was detected only at pH 3. From above results, we suggested that environmental contamination by quarry mine development is likely to be minor or negligible.
Physical and chemical properties, the salt accumulation and leaching of salt by water of coal fly ash ball (ash ball) were evaluated in comparison with perlite and granule rockwool (rockwool). Bulk density, particle density, solid phase, and porosity of ash ball were 0.93 g.cm$^{-3}$ , 2.29 g.cm$^{-3}$ , 40.6%, 59.4%, respectively. The bulk density of ash ball was greater, while porosity was smaller, than that of perlite and rockwool. Saturation moisture capacity was 52% in ash ball, 71% in perlite, and 90% in rockwool. Water contents after drainage for 1 hr of ash ball, perlite, and rockwool were 21%, 27%, and 80%, respectively. Water content of small granules (3-5 mm) of ash ball was 5% greater than that of large (7-15 mm) grannules. The ash ball was a weak alkali substrate with pH 7.6, but not electric conductivity (EC), of the nutrient solution supplied to ash ball slightly increased. When the absorption of mineral ions to substrates were analyzed, ash ball and RW absorbed mainly PO ̄$_4$. On tomato culture, salt accumulation in ash ball substrate was similar to that in perlite. Most of the salts in the ash balls were removed by submerging the substrate eight times in distilled water. It is concluded that water holding capacity of ash ball substrate was lo as compared to other substrates, but air permeability, and water diffusion was excellent, making control of medium water content easy.
In this paper, mechanical and germination characteristics of stabilized dredged soils were investigated to recycle dredged soil in eco-friendly manner such as waterfront construction. Non sintering binder (NSB), which was developed by using interchemical reactions between slag, high-calcium fly ash, alkali activator on the dredged marine clay, was added to dredged soil. Ordinary portland cement was also used for the comparison of two binders. Experimental tests such as flow test and unconfined compressive test were carried out to evaluate characteristics of stabilized dredged soil. Leaching test, pH measure, vegetation germination test were also conducted to consider environmental applicability. The unconfined compressive tests shows that unconfined compressive strength (UCS) also increases with the increase of curing time and mixed ratio. UCS of NSB mixtures were higher than those of OPC mixtures. Germination tests showed that germination and sprouting date are better in NSB mixture than OPC mixture. It can be explained that germination decreased as pH and 7-day strength increased.
The purpose of this study aimed to study effects of fire on vegetation and soil properties after the first growing season in Mt. Chiak. 1. With the basis of importance value of species in each stand, status of species was assessed for three categories; Increaser species, Decreaser species, and Neutral species. 2. Biomass was 2.2 times higher on burned area than unburned. This indicates that biomass was remarkably increased after fire. 3. To evaluate similarity, coefficients of similarity among communities were obtained, and correlation coefficients were also estimated. These indices showed that burned and unburned community were markedly different.. $B_1$-stand and $B_1$-stand appeared most similar to each other among stands. 4. Species diversity was greater in burned than unburned stands. 5. Soil pH value and organic matter content in burned area were significantly higher than those in unburned area. However, soil water content was lower in burned area. There was no effect of burning on soil pH value and water content at 15~20 cm depth of soil. 6. All chemical compositions except sodium were much higher in soil surface. The decreases in sodium levels at surface were probably resulted from the rapid leaching due to the increased solubility and decreased capacity for adsorption of sodium in comparison with potassium or calcium. Among chemical compositions of soil amount of nitrogen showed least difference between the burneb and unburned surfaces soil.

This study was performed to investigate the effects of forage cropping system and cattle slurry on productivity of whole crop rice, whole crop barley and Sorghum-Sudangrass hybrid and environmental pollution in paddy land. Forage cropping system used in this study was consisted of double-cropping whole crop barley followed by whole crop rice applied with cattle slurry (DWBRC) and double-cropping whole crop barley followed by Sorghum-Sudangrass hybrid applied with cattle slurry (DSSBC). The field experiments were conducted on the clay loam at Backsanmyun, Kimje, Chunlabukdo province in Korea for three years (May 2006 to Apr. 2009). This study was arranged in completely randomized design with three replicates. The field had been sown with whole crop rice 'Nampyung', Sorghum-Sudangrass hybrid 'Sordan79' and whole crop barley 'Younyang'. The yields of whole crop barley in DWBRC and DSSBC were 7,515 kg/ha and 8,515 kg/ha, respectively. The yields of whole crop barley in DSSBC significantly increased as compared with that of DWBRC (p<0.05). The contents of crude protein, neutral detergent fiber (NDF), acid detergent fiber (ADF), total digestible nutrient (TDN) of whole crop barley in DWBRC were not difference as compared with those of DSSBC. The pH, and contents of total nitrogen and organic matter in soil samples collected at the end of the experiment increased as compared with those at the beginning of the experiment (p<0.05). However, The content of phosphate in DWBRC was no difference as compared with DSSBC. In addition, after the end of experiment, the concentrations of exchangeable cations (Ca, Na, Mg and K) in soil samples collected at the end of the experiment were remarkably higher than those at the beginning of the experiment (p<0.05). The concentrations of $NH_4$-N, $NO_3$-N, $PO_4$-P, Cl, Ca, K, Mg and Na in leaching water were hardly influenced by the cropping system and application of cattle slurry.
This study investigated the spicy hot flavor related quality characteristics of baechu (Kimchi cabbage) Kimchi prepared using hot pepper powder in various capsaicin levels during 8 weeks of storage. The pHs in the Kimchi samples were in the optimum range of the pH 4.2-4.5 due to the relatively low storage temperature of $2^{\circ}C$ during the entire storage periods. The L, a and b values of cap-150 sample group were significantly higher compared to those in the other samples at 8 weeks of storage. Grading hotness of the Kimchi was significantly clearly separated when varied levels of hotness for the hot pepper powder were used at 2-4 weeks of storage (p<0.001). Sensory spicy hotness of the cap-40 showed significantly the lowest with values of 4.57-4.38 representing mild hot:, that of cap-85 was medium hot with values of 5.81-6.00; and finally, that of cap-150 showed the values of 6.86-7.14, representing strong hot flavor at 2-4 weeks of storage (p<0.001). The grading of spicy hotness in the Kimchi increased by about one level at the optimal edible periods due to the leaching out of capsaicin from the hot pepper powder for those storage periods. Thus, the increased hotness of the Kimchi in the optimal edible periods should be considered when the desired hotness of the hot pepper is chosen for the Kimchi preparation. The hotness decreased as the organic acids were generated during ripening by the 8th weeks of storage.
We investigated the content of heavy metals contained in the soil at an Il-Kwang disused mine in Kyung Nam. Three sampling points were selected, each point was digged to 210 or 240cm, sampled each 30cm depth. After air drying, each sample was digested in aqua regia and then analyzed with an Inductively Coupled Plasma Atomic Emission Spectrometer. We determined the content of Zn, Pb, Cr, Cd, Cu, Mn, and Fe, maximum content of Pb, Cd, and Zn was observed to $(4.6{\pm}0.1){\times}10^3$, 9.4(${\pm}3.6$), and $(2.7{\pm}0.1){\times}10^2{\mu}g/g$ respectively. Mean pH values of soil sampled at No.1, 2, and 3 regions were 3.2, 2.6, and 2.8, respectively. These values are remarkably lower than pH of the conventional standard soil which usually shows pH level around 4.9. At each sampling point, maximum content of heavy metals was observed from 30cm to 60cm depth. The depth profiles of Zn, Cd, Pb, and Cr showed very similar tendencies to each other, but those of Fe, Cu. and Mn showed different tendencies to former ones.
Much of the coal ash by thermal power plant has gradually been increased, however researches on the recycling of bottom ash has not been investigated enough so far. In this research, the lysimeter test was conducted to find out the possibilities of bottom ash as soil amendment to improve the physiochemical properties of sandy topsoil of turfgrass in golf course. The turfgrass growth test and leaching test were conducted on the lysimeter. The lysimeter columns were manufactured with various topsoil mixing ratios of 0, 10, 20, 30, and 50% of bottom ash with sand. As a result of leachate analysis through the lysimeter column, the higher ratios of bottom ash mixed affect significantly on water holding capacity of topsoil sand media with decreasing of the percolation rate. The results of leachate analysis in every three days interval, the pH of leachate increased with the bottom ash ratios, but the volume of $NO_3$-N, $NH_4$-N and K decreased significantly. However, the level of EC of leachate had constantly maintained. These results indicate that the application of bottom ash may improve turfgrass growth with water holding capability and fertility of sandy topsoil. However, the negative effects of the bottom ash also evaluated by reducing water permeability and solubility of $PO_4$-P by adsorption into soil particles. The results indicates that the reasonable mixing ratio of the bottom ash as soil amendment should be less than 20% (v/v) with sand which has a low water-holding and fertility in golf course topsoil layers.
Vanadium and tungsten can be obtained by separating/recovering the leaching solution from a spent SCR DeNOX catalyst using the soda roasting-water leaching process. Therefore, in this study, the adsorption/desorption mechanism of vanadium and tungsten in an ion-exchange column was investigated using Lewatit MonoPlus MP 600, a strong basic anion exchange resin. The operating conditions for the separation of vanadium and tungsten in the ion-exchange column was intended to present. By conducting a continuous adsorption experiment in a pH 8.5 solution, the adsorption capacity of vanadium and tungsten was found to be 44.75 and 64.92 mg/(g of resin), respectively, which showed that the adsorption capacity of tungsten was larger than that of vanadium because of the difference in ion charge. Vanadium has a higher affinity for MP 600 than tungsten. Consequently, as the vanadium-containing solution is eluted through the ion exchange resin onto which tungsten is adsorbed, the adsorbed tungsten is exchanged with vanadium and desorbed. A continuous experiment was performed with a solution of vanadium and tungsten prepared at the same concentration as the spent SCR DeNOX catalyst leachate. The adsorption capacity of vanadium was found to be 48.72 mg/(g of resin) and 80% of the supplied vanadium was adsorbed; in contrast, almost no tungsten was adsorbed. Therefore, vanadium and tungsten were separated effectively. The ion exchange resin was treated with 2 M HCl at 15 mL/h, and 97.7% of the vanadium(99% purity) could be desorbed. After desorption, NH4Cl was added to precipitate ammonium polyvanadate at 90℃ and recover 93% of the vanadium.
Acid mine drainage (AMD) from abandoned mine sites typically has low pH and contains high level of various heavy metals, aggravating ground- and surface water qualities and neighboring environments. This study investigated removal of heavy metals in a biological treatment system, mainly focusing on the removal by adsorption on a substrate material. Bench-scale batch experiments were performed with a mushroom compost to evaluate the adsorption characteristics of heavy metals leached out from a mine tailing sample and the role of SRB in the overall removal process. In addition, adsorption experiments were perform using an artificial AMD sample containing $Cd^{2+}$, $Cu^{2+}$, $Pb^{2+}$ and $Zn^{2+}$ to assess adsorption capacity of the mushroom compost. The results indicated Mn leached out from mine tailing was not subject to microbial stabilization or adsorption onto mushroom compost while microbially mediated stabilization played an important role in the removal of Zn. Fe leaching significantly increased in the presence of microbes as compared to autoclaved samples, and this was attributed to dissolution of Fe minerals in the mine tailing in a response to the depletion of $Fe^{3+}$ by iron reduction bacteria. Measurement of oxidation reduction potential (ORP) and pH indicated the reactive mixture maintained reducing condition and moderate pH during the reaction. The results of the adsorption experiments involving artificial AMD sample indicated adsorption removal efficiency was greater than 90% at pH 6 condition, but it decreased at pH 3 condition.
