  • To determine the response of soybean cultivars to nitrogen in relation to acidity, nodulation, content of allantoin nitrogen and major chemical compositions of soybean plants were investigated with two cultivars under two levels of soil pH and four levels of nitrogen fertilization in a field and nutri-culture experiments. Nodulation and contents of allantoin nitrogen, total nitrogen, potassium, calcium, magnesium and manganese of soybean plants decreased under acidic condition, but the degree of decrease was smaller in the variety Jangbaegkong compared to the variety Danyeobkong. On the other hand, nodulation, content of allantoin nitrogen and potassium decreased with increased nitrogen fertilization, particulary under pH 7 condition. Nodulation was positively correlated with the content of allantoin nitrogen of soybean plants. The content of total nitrogen of soybean plants increased with increased nitrogen fertilization, and this tendency was remarkable under acidic condition and in the variety Jangbaegkong.

  • Optimum conditions for hydrolysis of sunflower seed by pepsin and for plastein formation by pepsin were determined. The optimum conditions for hydrolysis of sunflower seed were pH 1.5, $45^{\circ}C$, enzyme concentration 2%, substrate concentration 2%, and hydrolysis time 24hr. The optimum conditions for sunflower seed-plastein formation were 50% substrate, pH 4.5, $50^{\circ}C$, 0.25% pepsin and 18hrs reaction time. To verify plastein fromation from concentrated prptic hydrolysate of sunflower seed, thin layer chromatography was performed. The TLC pattern of concentrated peptic hydrolysate of sunflower seed was different from that of its plastein. The TLC pattern of concentrated peptic bydrolysate of sunflower seed and at of its plastein indicated that plastein was different material from the hydrolysate.

  • The long-lived fission products $^{79}Se$ and $^{99}Tc$ have been considered as the major concern nuclides for the disposal of radioactive waste because of their high solubilities and the existence of anionic species in natural water. In this study, the solubilities of $FeSe_2(s)$ and $TcO_2(s)$, known as respective Solubility Limiting Solid Phase (SLSP) of selenium and technetium, were measured in the KURT (KAERI Underground Research Tunnel) groundwater under various pH and redox conditions. And their solubilities and major species were also calculated using geochemical codes under conditions similar to experimental solutions. Experimental results and calculation for $FeSe_2$ show that the solubility of selenium was found to be below $1{\times}10^{-6}mol/L$ under the condition of pH 8~9.5 and Eh=-0.3~-0.4 V while the dominant species was identified as $HSe^-$. For $TcO_2$, the solubility of technetium was found to be $5{\times}10^{-8}{\sim}1{\times}10^{-9}mol/L$ in the solutions of pH 6~9.5 and Eh<-0.1 V, while the dominant species was $TcO(OH)_2$. However, when the Eh of the solution is -0.35 V, $TcO(OH)_3^-$ and $TcO_4^-$ are calculated as the dominant species at pH 10.5~12 and pH>12, respectively.

  • Maillard reaction products (MRPs) were produced from aqueous solution of various sugars with hydrolyzed wheat gluten (HWG) with different temperatures, pressures, pH values and solvents. The physicochemical properties of MRPs were investigated and DPPH and hydroxyl radical scavenging activity and sensory properties were also assessed. MRPs from ribose and HWG evidenced the highest preference for meaty flavor and antioxidant activity and also evidenced higher antioxidant activity with larger pH reductions and higher browning index increases than were observed in other MRPs. The antioxidant activities were increased with increased reaction temperature and pressure. The most preferred meaty flavor was obtained from MRPs with ribose at 140$^{\circ}C$ in an oil bath with the pH adjusted to 9 in water as a solvent, and heated for 30 mins.

  • It has been reported that the inhibition effect of pH on activated sludge follows noncompetitive inhibition kinetics. However. the noncompetitive inhibition kinetic equation can not be directly applied to pH inhibition because of the difficulty in quantification of pH in terms of inhibitor concentration. So, many empirical equations have been developed to describe the pH inhibition effect especially for acidic condition. In this research. the pseudo toxic concentration ($C_{PT}$) concept model to quantify pH inhibition effect on activated sludge was proposed and compared to other existing models. The $C_{PT}$ concept model can explain the reduction of the maximum specific growth rate (${\mu}_{max}$) caused by the pH inhibition more accurately than any other models, at a wide range of pH. The only model parameter. $K_I$ can be easily estimated by Lineweaver-Burk linearization method.

  • This study was carried out to examine the acute toxic effects of ammonia to the eel, Anguilla japonica in high temperature and pH levels by histopathological observations. The eels of 40 g average body weight were exposed to 4 different concentrations of total ammonia (0, 10, 20, 30 mg/$\ell$) for 24~120 hours. Each concentration was treated under 4 different levels of pH (7.5, 8.0, 8.5, 9.0) and each of these treatments was tested at 2 different temperatures ($27^{\circ}C$, $32^{\circ}C$). Histopathological changes in gill tissues were observed by hematoxylin-eosin stain. As increasing of pH (from 7.5 to 9.0), water temperature (from $27^{\circ}C$ to $32^{\circ}C$), total ammonia concentration (from 0 mg/$\ell$ to 30 mg/$\ell$) and exposure time (from 24 hours to 120 hours), gill discolorated to dark brown with the naked eye and gill tissues showed hypertrophy of gill lamellae, winding of the secondary gill lamellae, epitherial separation and necrosis histopathologically. When gill lamellae epithelium was separated from the blood vessels, gill discolorated to dark brown with the naked eye.
