  • The ozone kinetics including ozone auto-decomposition. effect of pH, and solubility were investigated. Diesel decomposition process including TCE & PCE decomposition. effect of hydroxyl radical scavenger, effect of pH, and ozone/$H_2O$$_2$by ozonation process were also examined using deionized water, simulated groundwater. and actual groundwater. Reactions with deionized water and groundwater both stowed the second-order reaction rates, and the reaction rate was much higher in groundwater (half-life of 14.7 min) than in deionized water (hal(half-life of 37.5 min). The reaction rate was accelerated at high pH values in both waters. The use of ozone showed high oxidation rates of TCE. PCE and diesel. Though hydroxyl radical scavengers existing in groundwater were inhibitors for treating diesel, high pH condition and addition of hydrogen peroxide could accelerate to degrade diesel in groundwater, indicating ozone oxidation process could be applied to treating diesel contaminated-groundwater.

  • Effects of Ph on the activity of lipase isolated from milk fat globules were investigated, using coconut oil and homogenized milk as substrate. With buttermilk as an enzyme source for coconut oil and homogenized milk substrates bell-shaped curve was observed at $37^{\circ}C$, having the highest activity at pH 9.5. However, lipase activity at $0^{\circ}C$ continuously increased up to pH 10.0. With the purified lipase for homogenized milk substrate, the bell -shaped curve and the highest activity were observed at $37^{\circ}C$ and pH 9.0, respectively. Lipase activity at $0^{\circ}C$ increased up to pH 10.0. The addition of bovine serum albumin to the coconut oil shifted the optimum pH to pH 9.5 and the activity remarkably declined at pH 10.0. The effect of pH on the stability of purified lipase was depending on the temperature. Wehn the lipase kept at $37^{\circ}C$ for 20 minutes, it's activity remarkably declined as pH increased: the activity at pH 10.0 was declined by 13% of that pH 8.5. However, when the lipase kept at $4^{\circ}C$ for 60minutes, the activity was stable within the range of pH 7.5 to 10.0.

  • Three-year-old Pinus koraiensis seedlings, transplanted in brown forest soils originating from granite were treated with simulated acid rain of pH concentrations 5.6(control), 4.0, 3.0, 2.5 and 2.0 for 210 days from April 21 to November 17, 1999. Visible injury of the seedlings were observed at the pH 2.0 and pH 2.5 treatments. The total dry weight of the seedlings decreased at pH 2.0 treatment compared with that of the control, and T/R ratio increased at pH 2.0 treatment compared with others. The elements in each part of the seedlings, concentrations of Ca, P and content of chlorophyll in needles increased at the pH 2.0 treatment compared with the control. The concentration of N in the needles of the seedlings increased as the soil pH decreased. As the treated pH was lowered, soil pH has decreased, and concentrations of Ca, Mg, Al, and Mn increased, especially at pH 4.4. In addition, there was a strong correlation(r=0.90, p<0.05 ; r=-0.94, p<0.01) between the dry weight of the seedlings and the pH and Al concentration of the soils. Therefore, the pH and Al concentration in the soil may be useful indicator for assessing the effect of acid rain on the growth of woody plants.

  • The effect of pH and calcium on the growth of subterraneum clover (Trifolium subteraneum L.) varieties Dwalganup, Mt. Barker, and Tallarook was determined in solution culture. At pH 4.5 and below all components of growth except germination percentage were adversely affected. The effect of lower pH was improved at high calcium level(3.0mM). There was a varietal difference in response to low pH. Mt. Barker showed the highest percent germination and produced the longest radicle length, whereas the greatest value in top dry weight, root dry weight, root length and number of laterals was obtained with Tallarook.

  • Simulated acid rain(SAR) treatment caused a lethal effect on the newly germinated seedlings of Capsicum annum cv. Komyung even though the germination rate of the seeds was stimulated by the treatment of SAR. Young germinated seedlings were much more sensitive to SAR than the already-grown seedlings. The typical symptom caused by SAR was white spot or lesion on the leaf and appeared readily and severely at the low pH of SAR. Generally, Phytophthora rot was severer in SAR treatments than in control. However, the disease was less severe in lower pH of the SAR treatment than in higher pH. Pathogen inoculation following the SAR treatment increased the disease. The severest Phytophthora rot was observed in the SAR treatment of pH 4.0 or 4.5 regardless of the inoculation time.

  • Glucose was added into 2% MSG solution and studied for its effect on MSG degradation during heating at $100{\sim}120^{\circ}C$ and initial pH of 4 and 5. It was found that thermal degradation of MSG was significantly increased as the glucose concentration increased up to 20%. The values of thermal degradation constant calculated from linear relationship between log(% MSG) and heating time was linearly increased as the glucose concentration increased. The increased effect was more significant at pH5 than pH4.

  • This study was carried out to investigated the relation between air depositions and soil properties in Gyeongsanman province. Soil pH was average 4.40 in regions, and was the highest soil pH value in Miryang-sanne(pH 5.02), the lowest pH value in Namhae-seomyeon(pH4.08). Soil pH, soil organic matter content, avail phosphorus, K, Ca and cation exchange capacity(CEC) were significantly different among regions(p<0.05). Pb in Heavy metal content was 3.86mg/kg average value, and was the highest in Keo-je region(9.87mg/kg), the lowest in Mryang-sanne (0.86mg/kg). Zn, Cd, Cr and Ni were significantly different among regions(p<0.05). Correlation between rainfall pH and soil properties were positive in soil $pH(r=0.7826^{**})$, Ca$(r=0.6278^*)$, Mg$(r=0.5841^*)$, CEC$(r=0.6341^{**})$ and Cd$(r=0.5995^*)$, and were negative in Pb$(r=-0.5283^*)$. Correlation between $SO_2$ concentration and soil properties was negative in soil pH$(r=-0.6796^{**})$, Ca$(r=-0.5810^*)$, Mg$(r=-0.5522^*)$) and CEC$(r=-0.5905^*)$. Correlation between $NO_2$ concentration and soil properties were positive in organic matter $(r=0.6208^*)$, K$(r=0.5380^*)$. It was predicted that rainfall and $SO_2$ concentration would affect soil acidification, and soil heavy metal content related Cd and Pb. Others soil heavy metal were not related.

  • This study was conducted to determine the optimum root zone environment condition and proper nutrient management system for lettuce in hydroponics. For the root zone environment condition, several level of pH and electrical conductivity (EC) were treated respectively. Though all the level of pH 4 to pH 8, except pH 3, performed better growth without any visible physiological disorder, the optimum pH of the nutrient solution for lettuce production was pH 5.5 to 6.0. The optimum ionic strength of the solution was EC 1.2 to 1.6 mS $cm^{-1}$ / because higher nutrient level caused tip burn symptom by calcium deficiency. Considering the above results, it is concluded that lettuce can be efficiently mass-produced through the optimum root zone environment.

  • A hydrogel, poly(N-isopropylacrylamide-co-N,N'-dimethylaminopropyl methacrylamide), sensitive to both pH and temperature was synthesized and characterized for its welling behavior, lower critical solution temperature (LCST), and its appearance. The hydrogel with 5 mol% of N,N'-diemthylaminopropyl methacrylamide (DMAPMAAm) increased its volume phenomenonally in a lower pH range (ph 1~8) even at temperature ($37^{\circ}C$ and $40^{\circ}C$) higher than LCST. This behavior was unique compared to the temperature -sensitive hydrogel which did not exhibit any swelling in the same pH range. The hydrogel with 20 mol% of DMAPMAAm was swollen significantly at a higher pH of 12. With pH decrease from 12 to 2 water content in the gel increased from 38.8 wt% and 60.6 wt%, and 90.8 wt% for 5 mol% and 20 mol% gel, respectively. The transition pH that pH effect overwhelmed temperature effect occurred at a lower pH for a higher temperature ($40^{\circ}C$) and a lower mol% (5 mol%) of DMAPMAAm. Transparency and LCST of the gel increased with higher DMAPMAAm mol%.

  • A study was carried out about the effect of free fatty acids and lecithin on the thermal inactivation of horseradish peroxidase. In presence of lecithin peroxidase was inactivated very rapidly at $70^{\circ}C$ and pH 7.0, and showed also a rapid inactivation curve at $0^{\circ}C$ and pH 4.0. Linoleic acid was more effective in an $O_2-stream$ than in a $N_2-stream$, but oleic acid showed a similar tendency in the presence of $O_2-and\;N_2$ stream. From the results of the experiment we suggested that the opening of the heme crevis of peroxidase in the presence of lecithin and the produced lipidperoxide from linoleic acid may accelerate the thermal inactivation of horseradish peroxidase respectively.
