Cheap and environmental sound biosorbent was made for the adsorption of arsenate using an waste activated sludge. The biosorbents were methylated in 9hours and 24 hours respectively for the better adsorption of arsenate. The amount adsorbed of arsenate(V) increased with increasing methylation time. The specific arsenate adsorption was 0.06mmol As(V)/g biomass when the biosorbent was methylated in 24 hours. The methylated biosorbents were also studied with pH 5, 7 and 9. The pH of the solution affect the amount of adsorption of arsenate of the biosorbent even though it was methylated. The specific arsenate adsorption of the biosorbent at pH 5 was best and it was three times greater than the amount of arsenate adsorbed at pH 9.

This study evaluates the performance of an optical sensor and measurement system (CMA-24) which can analyze the fluctuation of dissolved oxygen and pH simultaneously. In the optical sensor system, the fluorescent materials, Rudpp and HPTS which are sensitive to dissolved oxygen and pH, respectively, are coated on the bottom of a 24-well -plate by the sol-gel technology. The detection times of the emission light of the oxygen sensor were $4,186{\pm}13.90{\mu}s$ and $4,452{\pm}36.68{\mu}s$ for the dissolved oxygen of 17% $O_2$ and 7.6% $O_2$, respectively. On the other hand, the detection times of the pH sensor were $6,699.43{\pm}14.64{\mu}s$, $6,722.24{\pm}6.21{\mu}s$, and $6,748.52{\pm}2.63{\mu}s$ using pH 6, 7, and 8, respectively. When we determined cellular respiration levels of C2C12 myocytes with CMA-24, $O_2$/pH measurement system, the ratio of the uncoupled to coupled OCR (oxygen consumption rate) was 1.41. The results mean that this CMA-24 system shows almost the same sensitiveness as the commercial system.

A male baby with intrauterine growth retardation had a short neck, small hands and feet, hypospadia, both grade I hydronephrosis, type II atrial septal defect, and moderate valvular pulmonary stenosis. The routine chromosome and banding analyses revealed a 46,XY,rec(8)del(8)(p21)dup(8) (q24.1)inv(8)(p21q24.1)pat chromosome constitution. His mother has normal chromosomes, but the father had 46,XY,inv(8)(p21q24.n Also his uncle had an inv(8) chromosome constitution. We used lymphocytes and examined 40 mitotic cells. All mitotic cells showed deletion of 8p21-->pter and duplication of 8q24.1 -->qter. Because Sp21 involves secretion of macrophage and lymphocyte against cancer cells, long-term follow-up for cancer will be needed.
A holomorphic function space in the unit disc D satisfying $\int_D|f'(z)|^p(1-|z|^2)^{p-1}dA(z)$<$\infty$ is quite close to $H^p$. The problems on the existence of the radial limits are considered for this space. It is proved that the situation for p > 2 is totally different from the situation for p $\leq$ 2.
The recent investigation indicates that the kinetic constants for anionic ions were merely the result of ion exchange between the algae cell wall surface and the anionic ion. In this study, Zygnema sterile and Lepocinclism textra, floating flagellate alga as the dominant algae strains, were cultivated using HRABR(High Rate Algae Biomass Reactor) and the cultivation conditions were 24 hrs. and 12 hrs. irradiation and it was studied how this algal biomass acts on the biosorption mechanism of anionic N and P. Results are as follows : 1. Calculating the specific chl.-a growth rate using Michaelis-Menten model, the one of 24hrs. irradiation was about 55 times higher than the one of 12 hrs. irradiation 2. Calculating the specific chl.-a growth rate using Kuo model, the one of 24 hrs. irradiation was about 2.26 times higher than the one of 12 hrs. irradiation 3. Langmuir model can apply to the biosorption mechanism of anionic N and P in HRABP. 4. Regarding the chlorophyll-a concentration as unit weight of sorbent, the ion selectivity coefficients for N and P are as follows : $(NH_3-N)+(NO_3-N)$ in 24 hrs. irradiation ; 44.984 $PO_4-P$ in 24 hrs. irradiation ; 24.237 $(NH_3-N)+(NO_3-N)$ in 12 hrs. irradiation ; 1432.851 $PO_4-P$ in 12 hrs. irradiation ; 599.076

Immunological mechanisms involving the release of inflammatory factors by HIV-1 infected microglia in the brain have been implicated in the pathogenesis of HIV dementia (HIVD). Since the regulation of matrix metalloproteinases (MMPs) activity can be influenced by variety of inflammatory mediators, this study was undertaken to look for a correlation between the MMP-9 release and the production of TNF-${\alpha}$ in response to HIV-1 p24 in the human monocyte cell line THP-1 as a model for microglia. First, it was shown that HIV-l core p24 antigen induced THP-1 to secrete MMP-9 in a dose response manner while it elicited a little effect on MMP-2 release in human astroglial cell line T98G. Next, it was found that p24 induced THP-1 to secrete TNF-${\alpha}$ without prior differentiation into macrophages by phorbol myristate acetate (PMA) treatment. Furthermore, anti-TNF-${\alpha}$ neutralizing antibodies significantly blocked p24-induced MMP-9 release in a dose dependent manner. Our data indicate that p24 antigen induces monocytic MMP-9 release by triggering up-regulation of TNF-${\alpha}$ secretion.

Cultured isolates of Prorocentrum minimum, P. micans, P. triestinum, P. balticum, Gymnodinium sanguineum, Alexandrium catenella, Scrippsiella trochoidea, and Heterosigma akashiwo from red tides in southern coast of Korea were phylogenetically compared on the basis of their 24S rRNA genes. For each isolate approximately 700 bp of 24S rDNA, encompassing D1 and D2 hypervariable domains, was amplified using the polymerase chain reaction and sequenced. The sequences were aligned with those reported in Genbank by using ClustalW program and phylogenetic tree was generated to show that morphospecies designations in the Alexandrium and Prorocentrum species are congruent with terminal taxa defined by phylogenetic analysis of the 24S rRNA fragment. Our results suggest that the molecular phylogeny approach could facilitate identification of domestic dinoflagellates which have ambiguous morphologies.
Changes in pH, titratable acidity, reducing sugar, nitrogen compound and mineral of black bean chungkugjang(BBC)added with kiwi and radish during fermentation were investigated. During fermentation of BBC, pH was increased, while titratable acidity was decreased. The changes in pH and titratable acidity of all chungkugjangs other than BBC were very rapid after 24 hrs of fermentation. Reducing sugar content was highest in BBC and was increased by 24 hrs of fermentation and decreased thereafter. Amino-type nitrogen increased rapidly after 24 hrs of fermentation. The addition of kiwi and radish increased the content of amino-type nitrogen in BBC by enhancing proteolysis of black bean, being as much as in soybean chungkugjang. At 72 hrs of fermentation BBC was found to be lower in ammonia type nitrogen than soybean chungkugjang. Mineral content, in general, was higher in BBC than in soybean chungkugjang, showing highest in potassium followed by phosphorus, magnesium and calcium.
This study was conducted to evaluate the use of exogenous enzymes as a potential means of improving the ruminal digestion (i.e., degradability) of alfalfa hay and rice straw. Twenty six enzyme-additives were examined in terms of protein concentration and enzymic activities on model substrates. The exogenous enzymes contained ranges of endoglucanase, xylanase, ${\beta}$-glucanase, ${\alpha}$-amylase, and protease activities. Six of the enzyme additives were chosen for further investigation. The enzyme additives and a control without enzyme were applied to mature quality alfalfa hay substrate and subsequently incubated in rumen batch cultures. Five of the enzyme additives (CE2, CE13, CE14, CE19, and CE24) increased total gas production (GP) at 48 h of incubation compared to the control (p<0.05). The two additives (CE14 and CE24) having the greatest positive effects on alfalfa hay dry matter, neutral detergent fibre (NDF) and acid detergent fibre (ADF) degradability were further characterized for their ability to enhance degradation of low quality forages. The treatments CE14, CE24, a 50:50 combination of CE14 and CE24 (CE14+24), and control (no enzyme) were applied to mature alfalfa hay and rice straw. For alfalfa hay, application of the two enzyme additives, alone and in combination, increased GP compared to the control at 48 h fermentation (p<0.05), whereas only CE14 and CE14+24 treatments improved GP from rice straw (p<0.05). Rumen fluid volatile fatty acid concentrations throughout the incubation of rice straw were analyzed. Acetate concentration was slightly lower (p<0.05) for CE14${\times}$CE24 compared to the control, although individually, CE14 and CE24 acetate concentrations were not different from the control. Increases (p<0.05) in alfalfa hay NDF degradability measured at 12 and 48 h of incubation occurred only for CE14 (at 12 h) and for CE14+24 (at 12 and 48 h). Similarly, ADF degradability increased (p<0.05) with CE14 and CE14+24. As for rice straw, increased DM degradability was observed at 12 and 48 h of incubation for all enzyme treatments with an exception for CE14 at 12 h. The degradability of NDF was improved by all the enzyme treatments at either incubation time, while ADF degradability was only enhanced at 48 h. Overall, the enzymes led to enhanced digestion of mature alfalfa and there was evidence of improved digestibility of rice straw, an even lower quality forage.
Effects of formalin on removal of Pseudodactylogyrus spp. were examined against naturally infected eel, Anguilla japonica (weight 89.9~96g) at a water temperature of $28^{\circ}$. Prior to experiments for removal of the parasite, the hematological toxicity of formalin bath at 0~500 ppm for 30 min~24 h was assessed by hematocrit values (Ht). Based on the results of Ht, appropriate methods of treatment, concentrations and durations, were examined in the main study. There was no significant (P>0.05) change of Ht in 100 to 200 ppm for 24 h. In contrast, Ht increased significantly (P<0.05) at above 300 ppm. This suggests that physiological damage was caused by formalin bath treating with 300 to 500 ppm. Formalin bath with 100 and 200 ppm for 24 h caused significant decreases (P<0.05) in the infection of the parasite. In conclusion, the 100 ppm formalin for 24 hour-bath was found most recommendable for the effective treatment of Pseudodactylogyrus spp. for the gills of the infected eel because of the median lethal concentration ($LC_{50}$) of formalin to eel; cumulative mortalities were found to be 0 and 13.3%, respectively, following 24 h bathing.
