  • Statement of problem: when using resin for class II restoration, micoleakage by instrumentation can be regarded as the primary negative characteristic. A review of the available literature suggests that using flowable resin as liner to decreased microleakage. Purpose: The aim of this study was to determine the influence of the nanofilled flowable resin lining on marginal microleakage after load cycling in class II composite restoration fillings using nanofiller resin. Material and methods: 24 extracted premolars were prepared with class II cavity. F group was restored the nanofilled resin with the nanofilled flowable resin as liner. NF group was restored the nanofilled resin only. After restoration, an experiment was performed on 2 groups using a 300N load at 104, 105 and 106 cycles. Prior to and before each load cycling, it was gauged length on total marginal microleakage, axial marginal microleakage and buccal, gingival, lingual marginal microleakage. Data were analyzed with the Mann-Whitney test & Kruskal-Wallis test. Results: There were statistically significant differences between 2 groups and between individual groups. (P <.05) The result showed less microleakage in teeth restored by the nanofilled resin, which was lined by the nanofilled flowable resin. Conclusion: There was significant reduction in microleakage when the nanofilled flowable resin lining was placed underneath the nanofilled resin in class II composite restoration fillings.

  • The effects of the oriental herbal medicine Saenghyetang(SHT, 生慧湯), which consists of Rehmanniae Radix (熟地黃 九蒸: was made by 9th steam) 40g, Corni Fructus(山茱黃) 16g, Polygalae Radix(遠志) 8g, Zizyphi Spinosae Semen(酸棗仁) 2g, Biotae Semen(柏子仁 去油: oil ingredient was removed) 20g, Poria Cocos(茯笭) 12g, Ginseng Radix(人蔘) 12g, Acori Graminei Rhizoma(石菖蒲) 2g, Sinapis Semen(白芥子) 8g, on learning ability and memory were investigated. Hot water extract(HWE) and ethanol extract(EE) from SHT were used for the studies. Learning ability and memory are related to modifications of synaptic strength among neurons that interactive. Enhanced synaptic coincidence detection leads to improved learning ability and memory. If the NMDA receptor, a synaptic coincidence detector, acts as a graded switch for memory formations, enhanced signal detection by NMDA receptors should enhance learning ability and memory. It was shown that NR2B was increased in the forebrains of oriental medicine-administrated mice, leading to enhanced activation of NMDA receptors and facilitating synaptic potentiation in response to stimulation at 10-100 Hz. These HWE-SHT treated mice exhibited that superior ability in learning and memory when performing various behavioral tasks, showing that NR2B is enhanced by HWE-SHT treatment and also is critical in gating the age-dependent threshold for plasticity and memory formation. NMDA receptor-dependent modifications, which were mediated in part by HWE administration, of synaptic efficacy, therefore, represent a mechanism for associative learning ability and memory. Results suggest that oriental medical enhancement of NR2B contributes to increase intelligence and memory in mammals On the other hand, to examine the effects of EE-SHT on the learning ability and memory in experimental mice, EE-SHT was tested on passive and active avoidance responses. The EE-SHT ameliorated the memory retrieval deficit induced by ethanol in mice, but not other memory impairments. EE-SHT(10, 20mg/100 g, p.o.) did not affect the passive avoidance responses of normal mice in the step through and step down tests, the conditioned and unconditioned avoidance responses of normal mice in the shuttle box, lever press performance tests and the ambulatory activity of normal mice in a normal condition. However, EE-SHT at 20 mg/kg significantly decrease the spontaneous motor activity during the shuttle box test, and also to extend the sleeping time induced by pentobarbital in mice. These results suggest that SHT has an ameliorating effect on memory retrieval impairments and a weak tranquilizing action.

  • We have studied to understand the barrier and interface qualities and structural changes through measuring temperature dependent spin-polarization as functions of plasma oxidation time and annealing time. Magnetic tunnel junctions consisting of SiO2$_2$/Ta 5/CoFe 17/IrMn 7.5/CoFe 5/Al 1.6-Ox/CoFe 5/Ta 5 (numbers in nm) were deposited and annealed when necessary. A 30 s,40 s oxidized sample showed the lowest spin-polarization values. It is presumed that tunneling electrons were depolarized and scattered by residual paramagnetic Al due to under-oxidation. On the contrary, a 60s, 70 s oxidized sample might have experienced over-oxidation, where partially oxidized magnetic dead layer was formed on top of the bottom CoFe electrode. The magnetic dead layer is known to increase the probability of spin-flip scattering. Therefore it showed a higher temperature dependence than that of the optimum sample (50 s oxidation). temperature dependence of 450 K annealed samples was improved when the as-deposited one compared. But the sample underwent 475 K and 500 K annealing exhibits inferior temperature dependence of spin-polarization, indicating that the over-annealed sample became microstucturally degraded.

  • The extent of water pollution was investigated at 4 stations in Kyonggi Bay during the summer seasons in 1970 and 1971. The concentrations of dissolved oxygen, total hardness, ammonia, nitrate, nitrite, phosphate, chemical oxygen demand, salinity, biochemical oxygen demand, coliform bacteria and facel coli were examined together with the measurement of pH and transparency. The relationship between the extent of pollution and the distance from the Inchon Bay also was examined. The concentrations of biochemical oxygen demand, chemical oxygen demand, ammonia, nitrate, nitrite, phosphate, coliform bacteria nad fecal coli were all highest at station 1, and lowest at station 4. Values were somewhat higher at low tide level in general. On the contrary, dissolved oxygen concentration was highest at station 4 and lowest at station 1. The highest and lowest values of biochemical oxygen demand were 10.88 ppm at station 1 and 0.27 ppm at station 4. The chemical oxygen demand concentrations at station 1 and 4 were 1.90 ppm and 0.63 ppm. Ammonia concnetration at station 1 was 0.43 pp, and was nearly 5 times as much as that at station 4. The values were $2.45{\times}10^{-4}$ ppm at station 1, and $6{\times}10^{-4}$ ppm at station 4. Nitrite concnetration at station 1 was $3{\times}10^{-4}$ppm and was the highest, while the lowest was $9.45{\times}10^{-5}$ ppm at station 4. Phosphate value at station 1 too was the highest and was about 4 times as much as that at station 4. Coliform bacteria were most abundant at station 1, and were counted to be 1.$1.7{\times}10^{-5}$cells/ml. At station 4, the number greatly reduced to 8 * 10$^{2}$ cells/ml. The number of fecal coli at station 1 was $2{\times}10^{-4}$ cells/ml. But at station 4, no fecal coli was detected at high tide level. At low tide level, 3 cells/ml were counted at station 4. In all of these, the highest data were obtained at low tide level, while most of the lowest value, at high tide level. Generally, values at statio 1 were 3-5 times as much as those at station 4. Concentration of dissolved oxygen at station 1 was 0.366 mg-atoms/1 and was the lowest. The highest value was 0.420 mg-atoms/1 and was recorded at station 4. The highest at station 4, which certainly were believed to be the result of the dilution by the fresh water of the Han river flowing into the Inchon Bay. As we can see from the data above, the extent of pollution was highest at station 1, the nearest from Inchon harbor, and lowest at station 4, where is the farthest, Station 1 and 2 were proved to be much polluted, but station 3 and 4, not.

  • In this study, the effect of physico-chemical variables on sludge conditioning was determined to enhance dewaterability of effluent produced from the thermophilic anaerobic digestion of food waste. The gas production rate and methane content during the anaerobic digestion of food waste were $1.1m^3/kg$ VS and 63%, respectively, and the biodegradability of volatile solids was 87.5%. The concentrations of CODcr, TKN and TP of effluent from digestor were 18,500mg/L, 2,800mg/L, and 582mg/L, respectively. At the jar test to screen the flocculant for the dewatering of effluent from digestor, $FeCl_3$ and strong cationic polymer were effective on making flocs in the effluent. The condition of flocculation of effluent were 500mg/L of $FeCl_3$ and 50-100 mg/L of strong cationic polymer, respectively. As the result of measuring of dewaterability potential of effluent to determine the mixing ratio between $FeCl_3$ and polymer by capillary suction time(SCT), optimum condition was 500mg/L of $FeCl_3$ and 80mg/L of strong cationic polymer.

  • Purpose: This study was aimed to evaluate the recurrence rate of a giant cell tumor (GCT) of the bone. Materials and Methods: The medical records of fifty four patients who were diagnosed with a giant cell tumor of the bone between March 1980 and December 2008 were analysed retrospectively. Among 54 patients, 27 were men, remaining 27 were women with the mean age of 33.1 years (range, 13-67 years). The mean duration of follow-up was 67.1 months. Results: Twenty-one patients (38.9%) had a local recurrence. The mean time to recurrence was 21.5 months (range, 2-59 months). The local recurrence rate of the upper extremities was higher than that of lower extremities. According to Campanacci classification, patients with a grade I diseae had lower recurrence rate than those with grade II or III disease. There was no significant differences in the recurrence rates based on cryotherapy, the filling of bone cement or bone grafts and surgical margin. Conclusion: To prevent local recurrence of GCT of bone, curettage of the tumor and elimination of the remaining cells are more important than adjuvant therapy.

  • Background : Multidrug-resistant tuberculosis(MDR-Tb) has been increased not only in Asia but also in Western society, which may cause public health problems and reduce the efficacy of treatment of tuberculosis. In Western society HIV infection is believed to do a central role in increasing incidence of MDR tuberculosis, but MDR-Tb in Korea may be somewhat different about clinical features, underlying disorders, and prognosis. Goble et al reponed that overall treatment failure rate in MDR-Tb including resistance to isoniazid(INH) and rifampin (RFP) was 44 %. The aim of this study is to find the treatment result in Korea and the factors determining the prognosis. Methods: A retrospective study of pulmonary tuberculosis cultured M. tuberculosis from sputum or bronchial washing fluid between 1986 through 1992 was conducted in the Seoul Paik Hospital, Inje University. We reviewed clinical courses of 141 patients, who had a tuberculosis with resistance to 2 or more drugs including isoniazid(INH) and rifampin(RFP). One hundred and 4 patients of 141 patients had completed treatment and followed up for more than one year. Results: Of 104 (mean age $43.6{\pm}16.7$, M: F=63 : 41) patients with sufficient follow-up data, 73(84.6%) patients responded which is defined as negative Sputum cultures for at least 3 consecutive months. Seven patients(6.7%) had a failure in negative conversion and 9(8.7%) of the patients who initially responded relapsed. Overall treatment failure rate was 15.4%, Patients who were treated for less than 12 months had a higher relapse rate(12.3%) than 18 months(4.9%). And there was a statistically significant correlation between the relapse rate and the number of drugs to which isolates wera resistant(p<0.05). Conclusion : The treatment failure rate of MDR-Tb in Korea was lower than previous studies in western Country and the major determining factor of prognosis was the number of resistant drugs to M. tuberculosis at drug sensitivity test. For reducing the relapse rate, we recommend more than 12 months of treatment for MDR tuberculosis.

  • Numerous studies have investigated quantifying dietary intake according to the weight status of children and adolescents. However, studies on differences in quality among diets remain scarce. This study compared diet quality by weight status and examined correlations between quality of diet and obesity in children and adolescents. Two hundred fourteen children and adolescents aged between 9 and 18 years participated in this study (Normal weight n=104, Obesity n=110). The data related to food intake were investigated by dietary records, Diet Quality Index-International (DQI-I), and Nutrition Quotient (NQ) and then compared with Dietary Reference Intakes for Korean (KDRIs). In DQI-I, moderation factor (control of unhealthy foods) score was 21.7 in the normal weight group and 19.5 in the obesity group. The normal weight group showed a higher score for moderation factor than the obesity group (P<0.001). Compared with KDRIs, vitamin $B_6$, folate, vitamin C, vitamin E, calcium, potassium, and zinc intakes were insufficient in both groups. Multiple logistic regression analysis revealed that DQI-I moderation was negatively associated with obesity (OR=0.77, 95% CI 0.69-0.87) after adjustment for age, gender, income, and total energy intake. Our results suggest that children and adolescents require nutritional education to understand the importance of vitamin and mineral consumption. Especially, education for children and adolescents with obesity needs to emphasize moderation of nutrient intake that can cause diseases with hyper-ingestion such as sodium and high calorie-low nutrition foods.

  • The effect of specular electron scattering on natural oxidation of free layer in NiO spin valves have been investigated. The magnetoresistance (MR) ratio and the exchange biasing field ( $H_{ex}$) of NiO(600 $\AA$)Ni$_{81}$$Fe_{19}$(50$\AA$)/Co(7 $\AA$)/Cu(20 $\AA$)/Co(7 $\AA$)Ni$_{81}$$Fe_{19}$(70 $\AA$) spin valves were increased from 4.9 % to 7.3 %, and 110 Oe to 170 Oe after natural oxidation in the atmosphere for 80 days, respectively. The sheet resistivity p decreased from 28$\mu$$\Omega$m to 17$\mu$$\Omega$m, but $\Delta$$\rho$ did not almost change after the oxidation. The spin valves enhanced by the specular electron scattering in the natural]y Co/NiFe/NiFe $O_{x}$ free layer were confirmed from the depth profiles using Auger electron spectroscopy.scopy..

  • A comparative study was performed in gnotobiotic and greenhouse conditions to evaluate the effect of exogenous application of indole-3-acetic acid (IAA) and inoculation of Methylobacterium spp. possessing 1-aminocyclopropane-1-carboxylate deaminase (ACCD) and IAA activity on red pepperand tomato seedling growth and development. Application of 1.0 ${\mu}g\;mL^{-1}$ IAA positively influenced root growth while high concentrations (>10.0 ${\mu}g\;mL^{-1}$) suppressed root growth of red pepper and tomato under gnotobiotic condition. On the other hand, inoculation of Methylobacterium strains with ACCD activity and IAA or without IAA enhanced root growth in both plants. Similarly, under greenhouse condition the inoculation of Methylobacterium sp. with ACCD activity and IAA enhanced plant fitness recorded as average nodal length and specific leaf weight (SLW) but the effect is comparable with the application of low concentrations of IAA. Seedling length was significantly increased by Methylobacterium strains while total biomass was enhanced by Methylobacterium spp. and exogenous applications of < 10.0 ${\mu}g\;mL^{-1}$ IAA. High concentrations of IAA retard biomass accumulation in red pepper and tomato. These results confirm that bacterial strains with plant growth promoting characters such as IAA and ACCD have characteristic effects on different aspects of growth of red pepper and tomato seedlings which is comparable or better than exogenous applications of synthetic IAA.
