The Mars Exploration Rover Opportunity investigated plains at Meridiani Planum, where laminated sedimentary rocks are present. The Opportunity rover's Athena morphological investigation showed microstructures organized in intertwined filaments of microspherules: a texture we have also found on samples of terrestrial (biogenic) stromatolites and other microbialites. We performed a quantitative image analysis to compare images (n=45) of microbialites with the images (n=30) photographed by the rover (corresponding, approximately, to 25,000/15,000 microstructures). Contours were extracted and morphometric indexes were obtained: geometric and algorithmic complexities, entropy, tortuosity, minimum and maximum diameters. Terrestrial and Martian textures present a multifractal aspect. Mean values and confidence intervals from the Martian images overlapped perfectly with those from the terrestrial samples. The probability of this occurring by chance is $1/2^8$, less than p<0.004. Terrestrial abiogenic pseudostromatolites showed a simple fractal structure and different morphometric values from those of the terrestrial biogenic stromatolite images or Martian images with a less ordered texture (p<0.001). Our work shows the presumptive evidence of microbialites in the Martian outcroppings: i.e., the presence of unicellular life on the ancient Mars.

We studied the thermal and electric effect of 2D and 3D p-n photovoltaic diode structures with and without surface texturing. By analyzing the numerical simulation results of I-V characteristics and lattice temperature distributions, we systematically studied the effect of different texturing structures and different doping concentration on the characteristics of the silicon p-n photovoltaic devices. The, efficiency of the device with the surface texturing shows more than ~ 2% enhancement compared to the reference devices without texturing. The tendency of the efficiency of doping concentration has been studied with boron doping of $10^{14}{\sim}10^{17}cm^{-3}$ and phosphorus doping of $10^{15}cm^{-3}$. In addition to that, the study of changing phosphorus doping of $10^{15}{\sim}10^{18}cm^{-3}$ with boron doping of $10^{14}cm^{-3}$ has been examined. It has been shown that the texturing structure not only improves the light trapping but also plays an important role in the heat radiation.

In the nanoscale regime, many multigate devices are explored to reduce their size further and to enhance their performance. In this paper, design of a novel device called, Triple Material Surrounding Gate Tunnel Field effect transistor (TMSGTFET) has been developed and proposed. The advantages of surrounding gate and tunnel FET are combined to form a new structure. The gate material surrounding the device is replaced by three gate materials of different work functions in order to curb the short channel effects. A 2-D analytical modeling of the surface potential, lateral electric field, vertical electric field and drain current of the device is done, and the results are discussed. A step up potential profile is obtained which screens the drain potential, thus reducing the drain control over the channel. This results in appreciable diminishing of short channel effects and hot carrier effects. The proposed model also shows improved ON current. The excellent device characteristics predicted by the model are validated using TCAD simulation, thus ensuring the accuracy of our model.

Amorphous silicon alloy (a-Si) solar cells and modules have been receiving a great deal of attention as a low-cost alternate energy source for large-scale terrestrial applications. Key to the achievement of high-efficiency solar cells using the multi-junction approach is the development of high quality, low band-gap materials which can capture the low-energy photons of the solar spectrum. Several cell designs have been reported in the past where grading or buffer layers have been incorporated at the junction interface to reduce carrier recombination near the junction. We have investigated profiling the composition of the a-SiGe alloy throughout the bulk of the intrinsic material so as to have a built-in electrical field in a substantial portion of the intrinsic material. As a result, the band gap mismatch between a-Si:H and $a-Si_{1-x}Ge_x:H$ creates a barrier for carrier transport. Previous reports have proposed a graded band gap structure in the absorber layer not only effectively increases the short wavelength absorption near the p/i interface, but also enhances the hole transport near the i-n interface. Here, we modulated the GeH4 flow rate to control the band gap to be graded from 1.75 eV (a-Si:H) to 1.55 eV ($a-Si_{1-x}Ge_x:H$). The band structure in the absorber layer thus became like a U-shape in which the lowest band gap was located in the middle of the i-layer. Incorporation of this structure in the middle and top cell of the triple-cell configuration is expected to increase the conversion efficiency further.

In this study, the anti-inflammatory and anti-bacterial activities of the extracts from the leaves of the Hydrangea petiolaris were identified, and the chemical structure was identified by separating the active ingredient. As the result of the anti-inflammatory activity experiment using RAW 264.7 cells, it was confirmed that the n-hexane (Hex) and ethyl acetate (EtOAc) fractions inhibited the production of nitric oxide (NO) and the expression of iNOS protein in a concentration-dependent manner without cytotoxicity. In addition, the n-Hex and EtOAc fractions reduced the production of pro-inflammatory cytokines (TNF-α, IL-1β and IL-6). Upon the anti-bacterial tests using Staphylococcus epidermidis and Cutibacterium acnes, the extract, n-Hex, EtOAc and n-butanol (BuOH) fractions showed potent activities. In order to isolate the active constituents, the n-Hex and EtOAc fractions were further purified to afford four phytochemicals; phytol (1), corosolic acid (2), asiatic acid (3) and 1-O-p-coumaroyl-β-D-glucopyranoside (4). All of the compounds 1 - 4 were isolated for the first time from this plant. In addition, the contents of isolated compounds were determined by HPLC and the quantity of phytol (1) was 27.8 mg/g for the 70% EtOH extract. Based on the above research results, it is believed that it will be possible to develop a natural cosmetic material that has anti-inflammatory and anti-bacterial effects using the extract of H. petiolaris leaves.
The $[Fe_4S_4]^{2+}$ clusters with 2-, 3-, and 4-pyridinemethanethiolate (S2-Pic, S3-Pic, and S4-Pic, respectively) terminal ligands have been synthesized from the ligand substitution reaction of the $(^nBu_4N)_2[Fe_4S_4Cl_4]$ (I) cluster. The new $(^nBu_4N)_2[Fe_4S_4(SR)_4]$ (R = 2-Pic; II, 3-Pic; III, 4-Pic; IV) clusters were characterized by FTIR and UV-Vis spectroscopy. Cluster II was crystallized in the monoclinic space group C2/c with a = 24.530 (5) $\AA$, b = 24.636(4) $\AA$, c = 21.762(4) $\AA$, ${\beta}=103.253(3)^{\circ}$, and Z = 8. The X-ray structure of II showed two unique 2:2 site-differentiated $[Fe_4S_4]^{2+}$ clusters due to the bidentate-mode coordination by 2-pyridinemethanethiolate ligands. Cluster III was crystallized in the same monoclinic space group C2/c with a = 26.0740(18) $\AA$, b = 23.3195(16) $\AA$, c = 22.3720(15) $\AA$, ${\beta}=100.467(2)^{\circ}$, and Z = 8. The 3-pyridinemethanethiolate ligand of III was coordinated to the $[Fe_4S_4]^{2+}$ core as a terminal mode. Cluster IV with 4-pyridinemethanethiolate ligands was found to have a similar structure to the cluster III. Fully reversible $[Fe_4S_4]^{2+}/[Fe_4S_4]^+$ redox waves were observed from all three clusters by cyclic voltammetry measurement. The electrochemical potentials for the $[Fe_4S_4]^{2+}/[Fe_4S_4]^+$ transition decreased in the order of II, III and IV, and the reduction potential changes by the ligands were explained based on the structural differences among the complexes. The complex III was reacted with sulfonium salt of $[PhMeSCH_2-p-C_6H_4CN](BF_4)$ in MeCN to test possible radical-involving reaction as a functional model of the [$Fe_4S_4$]-SAM (S-adenosylmethionine) cofactor. However, the isolated reaction products of 3-pyridinemethanethiolate-p-cyanobenzylsulfide and thioanisole suggested that the reaction followed an ionic mechanism and the products formed from the terminal ligand attack to the sulfonium.
New twenty five Imazethapyr derivatives, [2-(4-isopropyl-4-methyl-5-oxo-2-imidazolin -2-yl)-3-(N-methyl-N-X(sub.)-phenylaminooxoacetyl)-5-methylpyridine] were synthesized. and The quantitative structure activity relationships (QSARs) between their post-emergence herbicidal activity$(pI_{50})$ values in vivo against Barnyard grass (Echinochloa crus-galli) and physicochemical parameters of substituents(X) of 3-(N-methyl-N-X(sub.)-phenylaminooxoacetyl) group have been studied. From the basis on the findings, in case of post-emergence, the activities were dependent on the steric constant$(E_s<0)$ and electron donating $(\sigma<0)$ effect by subsitituents(X) of 3-(N-methyl-N-X(sub.)phenylaminooxoacetyl) group. Therefore, The most effective compound,15 (4-t-butyl group) and 20 (3,5-dimethyl group) were examined in this study. And the conditions on the compounds predicted to show higher herbicidal activity were also discussed.
Distinct from conventional energy-harvesting (EH) technologies, such as the use of photovoltaic, piezoelectric, and thermoelectric effects, betavoltaic energy conversion can consistently generate uniform electric power, independent of environmental variations, and provide a constant output of high DC voltage, even under conditions of ultra-low-power EH. It can also dramatically reduce the energy loss incurred in the processes of voltage boosting and regulation. This study realized betavoltaic cells comprised of p-i-n junctions based on silicon carbide, fabricated through a customized semiconductor recipe, and a Ni foil plated with a Ni-63 radioisotope. The betavoltaic energy converter (BEC) includes an array of 16 parallel-connected betavoltaic cells. Experimental results demonstrate that the series and parallel connections of two BECs result in an open-circuit voltage $V_{oc}$ of 3.06 V with a short-circuit current $I_{sc}$ of 48.5 nA, and a $V_{oc}$ of 1.50 V with an $I_{sc}$ of 92.6 nA, respectively. The capacitor charging efficiency in terms of the current generated from the two series-connected BECs was measured to be approximately 90.7%.
The crystal structure of $N-({\alpha}-dimethyl\;{\beta}-hydroxy)ethyl\;N'-cyclohexyl\;thiourea,\;C_{ll}H_{22}N_2OS)$, has been determined by X-ray diffraction method. The compound crystallizes in the orthorhombic space group Pbca with a = 10.33(3), b = 11.82(3), c = 22.57(4)${\AA}$ and Z = 8. A total of 1414 observed reflections collected by the Weissenberg photographs and was solved by heavy atom method and refined by block diagonal least-squares methods to the R value of 0.13. The cyclohexane ring has a normal chair conformation and the thiourea unit is planar. The primary alcoholic group O-H bonded to C(l) makes an intramolecular hydrogen bond with N(2), which leads to stablize the molecule. There are two independent hydrogen bonds in the structure. One of them is of the type N-H${\cdot}{\cdot}{\cdot}$O intramolecular hydrogen bond with the length 2.71${\AA}$, another is of the type O-H${\cdot}{\cdot}{\cdot}$S intermolecular hydrogen bond with the length 3.21${\AA}$ parallel to the b axis. Apart from the hydrogen bonding system the molecules are held together by van der Waals forces in the crystal.

With the growing trend of pervasive computing, (the idea that technology is moving beyond personal computers to everyday devices) there is a growing demand for lightweight ciphers to safeguard data in a network that is always available. For all block cipher applications, the AES is the preferred choice. However, devices used in pervasive computing have extremely constraint environment and as such the AES will not be suitable. In this paper we design and implement a new lightweight compact block cipher that takes advantage of both S-P network and the Feistel structure. The cipher uses the S-box of PRESENT algorithm and a key dependent one stage omega permutation network is used as the cipher's P-box. The cipher is implemented on iNEXT-V6 board equipped with virtex-6 FPGA. The design synthesized to 196 slices at 337 MHz maximum clock frequency.
