Sooty leaf blight was found on Dendrobium sp. in several farmers' fields located in Namji-eup, Changnyeong-gun, Gyeongnam province, Korea in 2001. Symptoms of the disease appeared on leaves. Sooty leaf spots were started with amphigenous, subeircular to irregular spots, with light grayish brown to black color with definite margin lines on the upper surface of leaves. Infected leaves became defoliated and whole plants eventually were died. The infection rates of the disease in the surveyed area reached up to 64.8%, in the early September. Conidiophores of the causal fungus were dark grayish brown in color, densely fasciculate, straight, curved to sinuous, branched, $5{\sim}10$ septate and $63{\sim}164{\times}3.2{\sim}4.9{\mu}m$ in size. Conidia were pale to olivaceous in color, obclavatecylindric, straight to slightly curved in shape, $1{\sim}5$ septate and $46{\sim}98{\times}3.2{\sim}3.9{\mu}m$ in size. The optimum temperature for mycelial growth of the fungus was $25^{\circ}C$. The fungus was identified as Pseudocercospora dendrobii on the basis of its mycological characteristics. This is the first report on sooty leaf light of Dendrobium sp. caused by Pseudocercospora dendrobii in Korea.

In order to prepare a basis for ecological restoration of the Seoul Metropolitan area, ecological diagnoses on soil physico-chemical properties and vegetation structure were carried out. Land use patterns, actual vegetation, and biotope patterns were also investigated based on aerial photograph interpretation and field checks. I formulated landscape elements overlaying those data and evaluated the ecological value of each element. Soil pollution was evaluated by analyzing soil samples collected in each grid on the mesh map, divided by 2km $\times$ 2km intervals. Soil samples were collected in forests or grasslands escaped from direct human interference. Soil pollution evaluated from pH, and SO$_4$, Ca, Mg, and Al contents of soil was more severe in the urban outskirts than in the urban center. Those soil environmental factors showed significant correlation with each other. Vegetation in the urban area was different in species composition from that in suburban areas and showed lower diversity compared with that in the suburban areas. Successional process investigated by population structure of major species also showed a difference. That is, successional trend was normal in suburban areas, but that in urban areas showed a retrogressive pattern. The landscape ecological map of Seoul indicates that the urban center lacks vegetation and greenery space is restricted in urban outskirts. Such an uneven distribution of vegetation has caused a specific urban climate and thereby contributed to aggravation of air and soil pollution, furthermore causing vegetation decline. From this result, it was estimated that such uneven distribution of vegetation functioned as a trigger factor to deteriorate the urban environment. I suggested, therefore, a restoration plan based on landscape ecological principles, which emphasizes connectivity and even distribution of green areas throughout the whole area of the Seoul to solve this complex environmental problem. In this restoration plan, first of all, I decided the priority order for connection of the fragmented greenery spaces based on the distances from the core reserves comprised of green belt and rivers, which play roles as habitats of wildlife as well as for improvement of urban environment. Next, I prepared methods to restore each landscape element included in the paths of green network to be constructed in the future on the bases of such preferential order. Rivers and roads, which hold good connectivity, were chosen as elements to play important roles in constructing green network by linking the fragmented greenery spaces.
Perilla (frutescens) seed oil, which is widely used as a source of vegetable oil in Korea, contains a strikingly large amount (58.4% of total fatty acids) of polyunsaturated linolenic acid (18 : 3) which is one of the essential fatty acids. Our hypothesis was that vitamin E contained in this oil would not be enough to prevent peroxidation of this polyunsaturated oil. A comparative study was carried out using rats and chicks devided into seven groups with various diet combinations emphasizing fat sources for the period of four weeks. The level of fat in each diet was 15% and animals were fed ad libitum. Various diet combinations were as follows; perilla seed oil and sesame seed oil with and without vitamin E supplementation, tallow as a saturated fat source and perilla seed hull group (10% at the expense of carbohydrate). The fat constituents of control group were consisted of 50% vegetable oil and 50% animal fat. A few important findings are as follows: 1. Rats fed perilla seed oil lost their hair focally around the neck and suffered from a bad skin lesion at the same place. In chicks, yellow pigmentation both of feather and of skin was clearly observed only in groups fed perilla seed oil with or without vitamin E supplementation. The basis of biochemical mechanisms of this phenomena remains as an important research interest. 2. The mean value for hematocrit was significantly lower for the chicks fed perilla seed oil than for those fed control diet. This result seems to be attributable to the effect on the red cell membrane known as peroxidation-hemolysis of vitamin E deficiency. 3. The serum cholesterol level was higher for the rats fed perilla seed oil than for those fed control diet, whereas in chicks the group fed perilla seed oil showed lower value than the control group indicating that different animal species could vary in their responses to the same diet. 4. In pathological examinations, the sign of hepatic fibrosis was seen in the perilla seed hull group and it was noticeable that the level of hepatic RNA was significantly increased in the rat recovering from vitamin E deficiency. It is hoped that more detailed studies on perilla seed oil and hulls will soon be carried out in many aspects especially i) at various levels of fat in the diet, ii) in relation to dietary selenium level and iii) to find an optimum level of dietary essential fatty acids in terms of P/S ratio using various animal species. In the mean time, the public should be informed to preserve this particular oil with care to minimize fatty acid oxidation and should be discouraged from overconsuming this oil. This study was supported by UB (United Board) Research Grant (Graduate School, Yonsei University, Seoul, Korea)
The preservative effect of chitosan film packing on quality of lightly-salted and dried horse mackerel was studied. In preparation of chitosan film, blue crab shell chitosan was dissolved in dilute acetic acid$(1.0\%,\;v/v)$, filtered, and spreaded on plastic plate and dried at $50\pm2^{\circ}C$. The chitosan film thus obtained was neutralized with 1.0N NaOH for 2 hrs and dried at room temperature after washing several times with distilled water. The lightly-salted and dried horse mackerel product was prepared by drying for 4 hrs at $40\pm2^{\circ}C$ in hot air dryer after packing with the chitosan film. During storage at $5.0\pm0.5^{\circ}C$, moisture content of the product was higher than that of the reference, but contents of VBN(volatile basic nitrogen) , amino nitrogen, and TMA of the product on dry basis were lower than those of the reference. Viable cell count, TBA value, and peroxide value of the product were also lower than those of the reference. Judging from the result of sensory evaluation, the chitosan film packing in the storage of lightly-salted and dried horse mackerel was remarkably elongated shelf-life of the product. From the results of chemical and sensory evaluation, it was concluded that chitosan film packing was an effective method for retaining the quality of lightly-salted and dried horse mackerel.

Purpose : This study was conducted to identify the peritonitis occurence of CAPD, by which a basis for efficient patient management could be provided. Method: Data were collected by questionnaires and hospital record from 55 people who underwent or were going through CAPD from January 1998 to April 2004 in a university subsidiary hospital kidney department. Result: 1) There were many elderly people of 61 years or above taking up 50.9%, 75% had low levels of education with middle school graduation or less, and the cases where separate individual rooms enabling the exchange of CAPD were not possessed was shown to be 61.8%. 2) With the management feature of CAPD, those who bathed once or less per 7 days made up 60.0%, and 60% washed their hands well before exchanging solutions which meant that 40% did not wash well or just washed moderately, and in terms of CAPD education, the proportion of those receiving education both before and after dialysis was 29.1%. also, with nutrition conditions, cases where the level of serum albumin was lower than 3.0 made up 38.2%, and those who were conducting self CAPD management was 65.5%, and cases where the management was done by the spouse or family members was revealed to be 34.5%. 3) There were Peritonitis occurrences in 40% of cases, and the number of Peritonitis occurrences within the period was 36, with an occurrence rate of $0.65{\pm}0.99$. Also, 66.7% of the causing bacteria were no growth, Gram positive bacteria made up 27.8%, and Gram negative bacteria consisted of 5.5%. 4) No significant difference was found peritionitis occurrence according to general and management characteristics. Lower peritionitis occurrence were shown with those who had spouses or family members conducting CAPD management as opposed to self-managing patients(p=0.037). Conclusion: Elderly patients there needs to be the participation of family or other support resources rather than subjecting them to self-management of solution exchange and entry/exit. Also, The high occurrence rate from Gram positive bacteria is shown so the importance of CAPD management education including bathing and hand washing needs to be emphasized.

This study seeks what kind of factors influence to locate dwellings and to establish scenic spots in nature by a case study focused on a meandering stream. The study specially concentrates on the interrelationship between both residences and beautiful sceneries and a meander cut-off-area that reveals a special topographical characteristics, located at Samji village in Youngyang-eup, Youngyang-gun, Koungsangbuk-do. The meander cut-off area, developed at the middle or upper reaches of a river, often makes up specific landscapes such as precipitous cliffs, sheer cliffs and caves. And the area where is specially created by sudden change of flow due to erosion perceived by the cut surface to be the most beautiful scenic spot. These beautiful landscapes were used to be called as Dae, Dam or Gul and managed by Confucian scholars who enjoy refined taste and devote themselves to the study in nature. Moreover, the Ku-Hado-literary means the area of ex-flow-made the scholars' lving with a well prepared basis for agriculture where supplied a cornucopia of organic matters and water. The merit of agriculture made it possible that the scholars became economically independent, and the fact might be the essential point why the meander cut-off area took noticed. Actually, Cho-family has been in Smaji Village for generations, producing a large number of scholars and keeping the actual power of the region. The physical shape of the meander cut-off area, cozily surrounded by mountains, is considered as a good place for the dwelling due to the influence of traditional sight of view for location and P'ungsuchiri which is known as Feng Shui in China and geomancy in the western world. It is a fruit in it own way that we could find the ancestors' discernment and wisdom from this study, who have lived their lives adapting themselves to the given natural environment and also utilizing the nature wisely. But this is a current-argued study on the meander cut-off area. Follow-up studies have to be continued about the landscapes of the meander streams and the meander cut-off areas scattered all over the country except Samji Village and draw the characteristics from the comparative analysis.
Anterior subcapsular cataract was developed by opacification with transdifferentiation and abnormal proliferation of lens epithelial cells (LECs) and pathological accumulation of extracellular matrix (ECM). After-cataract also be caused by a similar transdifferentiation of LECs remaining after surgery and the accompanying increase of ECM deposits. It is blown that prostaglandin E2 and cytokine, such as TGF-$\beta$, bFGF, and IL-1, were associated with abnormal proliferation and transdifferentiation of LECs. The aim of this study was to detect the expression of transforming growth factor-$\alpha$ (TGF-$\alpha$), transforming growth factor-$\beta_1$(TGF-$\beta_1$) and basic fibroblast growth factor (bFGF) in LECs of senile and diabetic cataract. The expressions of these growth factors in lens epithelial cells were determined. The sample for growth factor determination were collected in senile cataract patients without metabolic disorder, especially diabetes mellitus and diabetic cataract patients. The mRNA expression of growth factors was detected by semi-quantitative reverse transcription - polymerase chain reaction (RT-PCR) followed by Southern blot analysis. Statistics were analysed using Wilcoxon rank sum test. Semi-quantitative RT-PCR/southern analysis of RNA obtained from thirty surgical specimens demonstrated that the level of mRNA expression of TGF-$\alpha$, -$\beta_1$ and bFGF was increased in diabetic cataract lens tissues compared with senile cataract specimens but non-significant, bFGF and TGF-$\beta_1$ mRNA expression were detected in most patients, expression level of TGF-$\beta_1$ was most high on the basis of normal ocular concentration. Detection rate of TGF-$\alpha$ in diabetic cataract was 1.5 fold higher than in senile cataract (P=0.098). TGF-$\alpha$, TGF-$\beta_1$, and bFGF mRNA expression of LECs were detected in senile and diabetic cataract. In both patient groups, expression level of TGF-$\beta_1$, mRNA was high, so We suggest TGF-$\beta_1$ strong influence in development of senile cataract and of diabetic cataract also. TGF-$\alpha$ expression level was similar but more frequently detected in diabetic cataract than in senile cataract. In conclusion, TGF-$\alpha$ may be associated with early development of diabetic cataract.

Chinese leymus (Leymus chinensis Trin.) is a perennial grass that is widely distributed at high pH sodic and arid soil in the northeastern Asia. An efficient regeneration system was established through somatic embryogenesis of mature seeds to understand its high adaptability to harsh environmental conditions on the basis of molecular biology. The calli were efficiently induced (about $70\%$) from mature seeds on MS medium supplemented with $1.5\;\cal{mg/L}$ 2,4-D. Somatic embryos were formed from the surface of embryogenic callus on MS medium supplemented with $2.0\;\cal{mg/L}\;kinetin\;and\;0.5\;\cal{mg/L}$ NAA after 3 weeks of culture. Roots were induced from the shoot when transferred to MS medium without plant growth regulator for 1 week. Plant regeneration rate was $36\%$ and regenerated plantlets were grown to normal mature plants in pot. An efficient plant regeneration system in this study will be useful for molecular breeding of L. chinensis.

Callus of Rhodiola sachalinensis A. Bor were induced from leaf explant on l/2MS solid supplemented with combination of auxin (2.4-D, NAA: 0.1∼2mg/L) and cytokinin (BA: 0.1∼0.2mg/L). The effects of various medium, culture conditions and phytohormones on the growth of callus were investigated. MS, WPM, B$_{5}$ medium and diluted or concentrated media (1/2X, 2X, 3X) were used to investigate the growth of callus on each media. Among these, the highest growth was observed when cultured in in 2B$_{5}$ medium containing 0.5mg/L NAA and 1mg/L BA, 3% sucrose and 49.6 mM KNO$_3$ as nitrogen source, and 2.16mM NaH$_2$PO$_4$ as phoshate source at $25^{\circ}C$ in the dark. The calli cultured with 5% sucrose produced high salidroside content (0.41% on the basis of dry wt) than normal root (0.17%).

Microscopic Polyangiitis(MPA) belongs to a spectrum of systemic vasculits, and particularly antineutrophil cytoplasmic autoantibodies(ANCA)-associated small-vessel vasculitis which is characterized by involvement of the lung and kidney. The diagnosis of MPA is often difficult to make, and delayed because of the variability of the clinical presentation. Renal biopsies have a very important diagnostic and prognostic value in MPA. We experienced a case of microscopic polyangiits which was confirmed by renal biopsy and positive serum perinuclear ANCA, associated with alveolar hemorrhage and gastrointestinal bleeding. We began methylprednisolone pulse therapy, combined with a low dose of cyclophosphamide and plasmapheresis therapy. ACE inhibitor and Ca channel blocker were used when proteinuria and hypertention developed. On admission, the patient's lab findings showed BUN l17 mg/dL, Cr 2.3 mg/dL, while on the 60th hospital day BUN/Cr values fell to 20.8 mg/dL / 1.6 mg/dL and though proteinuria persisted, the patient's condition was tolerable and is currently under observation on an out-patient basis. The last lab values were BUN 26 mg/dL / Cr 1.6 mg/dL. (J. Korean Soc Pediatr Nephrol 2001 ; 5 : 213-18)
