  • This study was conducted for the establishment of statistical method to determine the representative air quality monitoring station representing long-term ozone trends of Seoul. In this study, hourly ozone concentrations from 2002 to 2011 were used for further analysis. KZ-filter, correlation matrix, cluster analysis, and Kriging method were applied to select the representative station. The analysis based on correlation matrix found that long-term trend of ozone concentrations measured at Sinjung, Sadang, and Bun-dong showed a high correlation. The cluster analysis found that the former three stations belonged to the same cluster. The analysis based on Kriging method also showed that the former three stations were highly correlated with other stations in spatial distribution. Considering these results and the highest correlation coefficient of Sinjung station, the Sinjung station was the most suitable as the representative station used to understand the long-term ozone trend of Seoul. This result could be applied to understand long-term trend of other pollutants. Furthermore, this result can also be used to assess the appropriacy of spatial distribution of national air quality monitoring stations.

  • In this present study, we quantified the $SO_2$ effect on $O_3$ retrieval from the Ozone Monitoring Instrument (OMI) measurement. The difference between OMI-Total Ozone Mapping Spectrometer (TOMS) and OMI-Differential Optical Absorption Spectrometer (DOAS) total $O_3$ is calculated in high $SO_2$ volcanic plume on several volcanic eruptions (Anatahan, La Cumbre, Sierra Negra, and Piton) from 2005 through 2008. There is a certain correlation ($R{\geq}0.5$) between the difference and $OMI-SO_2$ in volcanic plumes and the significant difference close to 100 DU. The high $SO_2$ condition found to affect TOMS $O_3$ retrieval significantly due to a strong $SO_2$ absorption at the TOMS $O_3$ retrieval wavelengths. Besides, we calculated the difference against various $SO_2$ levels. There is the considerable difference (average = 32.9 DU; standard deviation = 13.5 DU) in the high $OMI-SO_2$ condition ($OMI-SO_2{\geq}7.0DU$). We also found that the rate of change in the difference per 1.0 DU change in middle troposphere (TRM) and upper troposphere and stratosphere (STL) $SO_2$ columns are 3.9 DU and 4.9 DU, respectively.

  • CMAQ (Community Multiscale Air Quality)-HDDM (High-order Direct Decoupled Method) simulations with MICS-Asia 2010 and INTEX-B 2006 emissions inventories were performed to investigate the impact of Chinese $NO_x$ and VOC emissions on 1-hr ozone concentrations over South Korea during May to July in 2014. Chinese $NO_x$ and VOC emissions in MICS-Asia 2010 were 60% higher and 100% lower than those in INTEX-B 2006 during the simulation period. It makes the ratio of Chinese VOC to $NO_x$ emissions in INTEX-B 2006 (Case 1) is 3.2 times higher than that in MICS-Asia 2010 (Case 2). When the observed period mean 1-hr ozone concentration averaged across 106 air monitoring sites in the SMA (Seoul Metropolitan Area) was 37.6 ppb, the modeled values were similar to each other; 37.3 ppb for Case 1, and 40.4 ppb for Case 2. Both cases show that daily maximum 1-hr ZOC (Zero-Out Contribution) of Chinese $NO_x$ and VOC emissions were as high as 55 ppb and 35 ppb for the episode respectively. Correlation coefficients between ZOC of Chinese $NO_x$ and VOC emissions and the SMA daily maximum 1-hr ozone were 0.49~0.69. It indicates that Chinese emissions occasionally affect the SMA daily ozone peaks. On the other hand, Case 2 predicted 7 ppb and 1 ppb higher ZOC of Chinese $NO_x$ and VOC emissions than Case 1, when simulated ozone in the SMA is over 80 ppb. It implies that upwind $NO_x$ emissions would be more important than upwind VOC emissions for the long-range transport of ozone in Northeast Asia.

  • Pusan is the largest coastal city with a population of about four mi18ion in Korea. Because of increased and confused traffic, photochemical air pollution become a major urban environmental problem recently. The photo-chemical air pollution weather forecasting method preciser than existing air pollution forecast method has been developed to forecast ozone episode days with meteorological conditions using the data measured at 7 air quality continuous monitoring stations from lune to September using 2 years (1994, 1995). The method developed in present study showed higher percentage correct and skill score than existing air pollution forecasting in KMA ( Korea Meteorological Administration).

  • The surface solar radiations were calculated and analyzed with spatial resolutions (4 km and 1 km) using by GWNU (Gangneung-Wonju National University) solar radiation model. The GWNU solar radiation model is used various data such as aerosol optical thickness, ozone amount, total precipitable water and cloud factor are retrieved from Moderate Resolution Imaging Spectrometer (MODIS), Ozone Monitoring Instrument (OMI), MTSAT-1R satellite data and output of the Regional Data Assimilation Prediction System(RDAPS) model by Korea Meteorological Administration (KMA), respectively. The differences of spatial resolutions were analyzed with input data (especially, cloud factor from MTSAT-1R satellite). And the Maximum solar radiation by GWNU model were found in Andong, Daegu and Jinju regions and these results were corresponded with the MTSAT-1R cloud factor.

  • Monitoring of climate change and atmospheric environment by satellite measurements has been increased in recent years. In this study, nitrogen dioxide ($NO_2$) measurements from Ozone Monitoring Instrument (OMI) were compared with surface measurements over the Korean peninsula. $NO_2$ from OMI measurements showed high values and also showed seasonal variations such as high concentration in winter and low in summer over metropolitan areas while $NO_2$ concentration at national background station was low and did not clearly show seasonal variations. Surface measurements showed similar temporal and spatial variations to those of satellite measurement. The comparison between satellite measurements and surface measurements showed that the correlation between them was higher in urban area (r=0.64 at Seoul and r=0.63 at Daegu) than in national background stations (r=0.37 at Jeju) because the concentration in urban area was relatively high so that the variation of $NO_2$ concentration could be detected better than at national background stations by satellite. Satellite can effectively measure the emission and transport of pollutants with no limitations in spatial coverage.

  • Ozone ($O_3$) is a main component of photochemical oxidants and a phytotoxic air pollutant. Although the current levels of tropospheric $O_3$ in East Asia could adversely affect productivity of forest tree species, risk assessments of $O_3$ impact were limited. In this paper, we summarize the methodology of risk assessment of $O_3$ on forest tree species based on our two previous studies, risk assessments of $O_3$ impact on the growth of Fagus crenata by Watanabe et al. (2012) and on the annual carbon absorption of three representative conifers, Cryptomeria japonica, Pinus densiflora and Larix kaempferi by Watanabe et al. (2010). $O_3$ sensitivity of each tree species obtained from an experimental study, $O_3$ exposure and atmospheric N deposition based on field monitoring and vegetation survey were integrated by geographic information system method. Based on the results, we conclude that the area with high risk of $O_3$ impact does not necessarily correspond to the area with high $O_3$ exposure. The varieties of tree habitat, tree sensitivity to $O_3$ and annual carbon absorption among the tree species, and N deposition-induced change in the $O_3$ sensitivity of F. crenata are raised as the factors of discordance between areas with high risk and those with high $O_3$ exposure. In the last part of this paper, we discuss the present uncertainty and perspectives of risk assessment for the future studies on the impact of $O_3$ on forest tree species in East Asia.

  • In this work. we investigated the ozone data sets that exceeded ambient air quality standards from 31 air quality monitoring stations dispersed across the Seoul metropolitan city during the period covering 1990 and 2000. To specifically describe spatial dependency of high level O$_3$ occurrence, we grouped our data into four different geographical ozone exceedance is much longer in SW than the other three sectors. When we compared the exceedance data in terms of occurrence frequency, the month of maximum frequency differed slightly among different sectors. Examination of long-term exceedance trend indicated that its frequency increased continuously from all sectors over the past years, although slightly opposite patterns existed in their absolute values. Most importantly, its peak occurrence frequency seemed to center in very recent years such as 1998 (NE sector) and 2000 (ail pattern sectors except NE). Consequently, we were able to describe the existence of certain patterns of ozone exceedance data sets in terms of both temporal and spatial scales.

  • This paper presents an overview of the UK Hydrocarbon Monitoring Network and summarises some of the lessons learnt from running and automated VOC monitoring network in th UK. The paper will describe the operation of the network and the Quality Control and Quality Assurance (QA/QC) procedures used to ensure that the data qality objectives are met. The provision of accurate measurements of ambient air pollutant concentrations is a valuable and high-profile service of Governments, assisting policy decisions and allowing members of the public to be well-informed. The need for such measurements has been increased in the UK by the National Air Quality Strategy and European Air Quality Directives, with the National Networks playing a central role in delivering the information. The Hydrocarbon Network provides measurements directly in support of monitoring requirements for benzene and 1,3-butadiene, and of 23 other hydrocarbon species important for their role in ozone and secondary particulate formation.

  • This study was performed mainly to examine whether a city with a metal industrial presence presents different characteristics in ambient volatile organic compound (VOC) concentrations compared to residential (RES) and commercial/residential combined (CRC) areas of another city by using long-term monitoring data (from January 2006 to February 2009). For most target VOCs, ambient concentrations in the metal-industrialized city were lower than for the RES and CRC areas. Aromatic compounds were the predominant VOC groups for the metal industry city as well as for other land uses. The ambient concentrations of aromatic VOCs were higher in the winter and spring seasons than in the summer and fall seasons, whereas those of chlorinated VOCs did not show any distinctive variations. In addition, higher concentrations were observed during daytime hours. The correlations between the ambient target compounds were statistically significant, except for the correlation between benzene and ozone.
