  • Hot-rolled steel plates of SPHC and SS400 were oxidized at 600, 750 and $900^{\circ}C$ for 2 hr in air. With an increase in the oxidation temperature, their oxidation rates increased, and this was accompanied by the formation of pores and cracks in the thickened oxide scales, which were non-adherent. SPHC steels manufactured by either an arc furnace or a blast furnace displayed similar oxidation rates, indicating that their oxidation rates were insensitive to the manufacturing process. Medium-carbon SS400 steel displayed somewhat faster oxidation rates than low-carbon SS400 steel, indicating that the carbon content did not significantly influence the oxidation rates.

Influences of Environmental Conditions and Refractory Organic Matters on Organic Carbon Oxidation Rates Measured by a High Temperature Combustion and a UV-sulfate Methods (다양한 환경요인과 난분해성 유기물에 따른 고온산화 및 UV산화방식 총 유기탄소 산화율 변화)

  • This study examined the effects of environmental conditions and the presence of refractory organic matter on oxidation rates of total organic carbon (TOC) measurements based on high temperature combustion and ultraviolet-sulfate methods. Spectroscopic indices for prediction of oxidation rates were also explored using the UV spectra and fluorescence excitation-emission matrix (EEM) of humic acids. Furthermore, optimum TOC instrument conditions were suggested by comparing oxidation rates of a standard TOC material under various conditions. Environmental conditions included salts, reduced ions, and suspended solids. Salts had the greatest influence on oxidation rates in the UV-sulfate method. However, no effect was detected in the high temperature combustion method. The UV-sulfate method showed lower humic substance oxidation rates, refractory natural organic matter, compared to the other methods. TOC oxidation rates for the UV-sulfate method were negatively correlated with higher specific-UV absorbance, humification index, and humic-like EEM peak intensities, suggesting that these spectroscopic indices could be used to predict TOC oxidation rates. TOC signals from instruments using the UV-sulfate method increased with increasing chamber temperature and increasing UV exposure durations. Signals were more sensitive to the former condition, suggesting that chamber temperature is important for improving the TOC oxidation rates of refractory organic matter.

Quenching Mechanisms and Kinetics of $\alpha$-, $\beta$-, $\gamma$-, and $\delta$-Tocopherol in Photosensitized Oxidation of Lard

  • Quenching mechanisms and kinetics of $\alpha$-, $\beta$-, $\gamma$-, and $\delta$-tocopherol in photosensitized oxidation of lard were studied. Lard at 0.03, 0.07, 0.11, and 0.3 M in methylene chloride containing $4.4{\times}10^{-6}\;M$ chlorophyll and 0, 0.1, 0.3, and 0.6 mM $\alpha$-, $\beta$-, $\gamma$-, and $\delta$-tocopherol were stored under light for 4 hr, respectively. Oxidation was determined by headspace oxygen and peroxide value. Tocopherols prevented the photosensitized oxidation of lard (p<0.05). Steady state kinetic study showed that $\alpha$-, $\beta$-, $\gamma$-, and $\delta$-tocopherol prevented the photosensitized oxidation of lard by quenching singlet oxygen. Singlet oxygen quenching rates of $\alpha$-, $\beta$-, $\gamma$-, and $\delta$-tocopherol by headspace oxygen depletion were 1.86, 2.39, 2.47, and $2.11{\times}10^7/M/sec$, respectively. The quenching rates of $\alpha$-, $\beta$-, $\gamma$-, and $\delta$-tocopherol by peroxide value were 1.42, 1.11, 0.97, and $0.42{\times}10^7/M/sec$, respectively. The quenching rates of tocopherols were slightly different depending on the measurements of oxidation.

Growth Characteristics of Acidithiobacillus thiooxidans in Different Sulfur Concentrations (황 농도에 따른 Acidithiobacillus thiooxidans의 생장 특성)

  • The growth characteristics of sulfur-oxidizing bacteria, Acidithiobacillus thiooxidans AZ11, MET, and TAS were investigated in mineral salt media supplemented with elemental sulfur of 1$\sim$50 g $L^{-1}$. The sulfur oxidation rates of A. thiooxidans. MET and TAS increased highly with increasing sulfur concentration up to 10 g L$^{-1}$, but the rates increased slowly in sulfur concentration over 10 g L$^{-1}$. A. thiooxidans AZ11 showed the parallel increase of sulfur oxidation rate until sulfur concentration increased up to 40 g L$^{-1}$. The maximum sulfur oxidation rates (V$_{max}$) of AZl1, MET and TAS were 1.88, 1.38 and 0.43 g S L$^{-1}$ d$^{-1}$, respectively. The maximum specific growth rates (${\mu}_{max}$) of AZ11, MET, and TAS were 0.33 d$^{-1}$, 0.30 d$^{-1}$ and 0.45 d$^{-1}$, respectively. Although MET and TAS couldn't grow at sulfate concentration of 40 g L$^{-1}$, AZ11 could grow in the presence of 58 g L$^{-1}$ sulfate, the final oxidation product of elemental sulfur.

Predicting the Oxidation Amount in the Catalyzed DPF according to the EGR Rate for the Off-road Engine (Off-road 엔진의 EGR율에 따른 촉매코팅 DPF의 자연재생율 예측)

  • This paper aims to predict oxidation amounts of catalyst and heat produced through passive regeneration on DPF according to different EGR rates and loads of off-road engines. Soot oxidation model and parameter assumption model were used for the test. Engine data were measureed with 25%, 50% and 75% of 1600 RPM loads and with 0% and 30% of EGR rates in order to estimate parameters. Oxygen levels calculated on the DPF downstream and oxygen levels measured were compared through all of the experimental conditions for validating the model. Oxidation rates on DPF according to different EGR rates and oxygen levels on the DPF downstream were estimateed successfully, which can be applied for off-road vehicles.

  • Ammonium sulfate synthesized by the air oxidation methods without catalyst using the reaction vessel which was fitted with fritted glass at the bottom of it and introducing, through the bottom, ammonia and air with constant flow rates to sulfurous acid solution of constant concentrations at the given temperatures. The experiment showed that the oxidation process was accelerated in accord with the increase of the air flow rates when the ammonia flow rate was constantly kept at ca. 100ml/min. in high temperatures. When the pH of the solution reached 9.0, the oxidation was nearly completed. It is assumed that in the process of reaction, $[O_{2}{\to}HSO_{3}^-]^{\neq}$ would be produced as an activated complex and the reaction was thought to be first order. The experiment indicated that the 0.5M sulfurous solution could be oxidized up to 98.54% at the flow rates of ammonia and air, 100ml/min., and 4l/min., respectively at $50^{\circ}C$.

  • Using isolated perfused livers obtained from rats that have been fed saturated and unsatu-rated fatty acid diets the rates of hepatic microsomal oxidation of 7-ethoxycoumarin(EC) to 7-hydroxycoumarin(HC) and the rates of subsequent conjugation of the produced HC to its glucuronide and sulfate esters have been determined. Prior to preparing the isolated perfused livers. rats were fed either fat free diet 10% beef tallow diet or 10% corn oil diet for 3 weeks. The rates of oxidation from EC to HC and also of the subsequent glucuronidation of HC were higher in the corn oil diet group than those found for the fat free and beef tallow diet groups. When the concentrations of infusing EC were increased stepwise there was a dose-dependnet increase for the release of the glucuronide form of HC metabolites at the expense of the sulfate ester form. This dose dependant shift observed for the corn oil group was more significnat than those found for other groups. These results indicate that corn oil feeding has produced enhancement in the rates of hepatic microsomal drug oxidation and glucuronide conjugation the reactions catalyzed by enzymes embedded in the hepatic microsomal membranes.

The effect of dissolved oxygen and initial complextation of Cu(II) and EDTA on photooxidation of Cu(II)-EDTA by TiO2 (TiO2 광측매를 이용한 Cu(II)-EDTA의 산화에서 용존산소와 Cu(II)와 EDTA 초기 당량의 영향)

  • The effects of initial concentration of dissolved oxygen content, Cu(II) and EDTA in an aqueous Cu(II)-EDTA solution on $TiO_2$ photo-oxidation of EDTA were investigated using $TiO_2$ (Degussa P-25) and UV irradiation at $20{\circ}C$. In the presence of dissolved oxygen and/or Cu(II) the photo-oxidation rates of EDTA were enhanced. The rates linearly increased in the range of initial Cu(II) concentration below 1.79 mM, while abode this concentration those were kept constant. The trend or the EDTA photo-oxidation rates appeared to be akin to the Langmuir-Hinshelwood equation farm and the k values calculated were 0.05 mM/min for the free-EDTA system, and 0.17 mM/min far the Cu(II)-EDTA system. These meant the aqueous EDTA decomposition was enhanced due to weakening of the intra-molecular bond strength of EDTA by complexation with Cu(II) added. It was concluded the decomposition of aqueous EDTA by $TiO_2$ photo-oxidation was maximum in the presence of dissolved oxygen supplied by air purging and of Cu(II) with its concentration for 1:1 Cu(II)-EDTA complexation ratio.

HIGH TEMPERATURE OXIDATION OF NB-CONTAINING ZR ALLOY CLADDING IN LOCA CONDITIONS

  • In order to evaluate high-temperature oxidation behavior of the advanced alloy cladding under LOCA conditions, isothermal oxidation tests in steam were performed with cladding specimens prepared from high burnup PWR fuel rods that were irradiated up to 79 MWd/kg. Cladding materials were $M5^{(R)}$ and $ZIRLO^{TM}$, which are Nb-containing alloys. Ring-shaped specimens were isothermally oxidized in flowing steam at temperatures from 1173 to 1473 K for the duration between 120 and 4000s. Oxidation rates were evaluated from measured oxide layer thickness and weight gain. A protective effect of the preformed corrosion layer is seen for the shorter time range at the lower temperatures. The influence of pre-hydriding is not significant for the examined range. Alloy composition change generally has small influence on oxidation in the examined temperature range, though $M5^{(R)}$ shows an obviously smaller oxidation constant at 1273 K. Consequently, the oxidation rates of the high burnup $M5^{(R)}$ and $ZIRLO^{TM}$ cladding are comparable or lower than that of unirradiated Zircaloy-4 cladding.
