A study on recovery of rare earth oxide powders from waste NiMH batteries (폐니켈수소전지로부터 희토류 산화물 분말의 회수에 대한 연구)

  • For the recovering rare earths in the spent nickel-metal hydride batteries, 10 M NaOH is added to the solution leached with sulfuric acid. The rare earth powders were precipitated at rate of 98 % at the condition of pH 2.0 or less. The recovered rare earth complex precipitate increased the leaching rate to nitric acid by heat treatment at $800^{\circ}C$ for 4 hours. Subsequently secondary precipitation was performed by adding oxalic acid to the solution in which the rare earth complex precipitate was dissolved. The re-precipitated rare earth powders were converted into oxide form through heat treatment at $800^{\circ}C$ for 4 hours with purity of 99.5 %.

Changes in the Components of Dried Jujube Fruit by Drying Methods (건조방법에 따른 건조대추의 성분 변화)

  • This study was carried out to investigate change in the components according to drying methods of jujube. Raw jujube was dried with five methods such as sun-drying, hot-air drying after pretreated with sunlight, blanching, microwave treatment, respectively. The contents of soluble sugar and protein in sun-dried jujube were higher than those of other drying methods. The free sugars of dried jujube were consisted of sucrose, glucose and fructose. And the contents of free sugar was not different by drying methods. The major organic acids of dried jujube were oxalic acid, citric acid and malic acid. The contents of glutamic acid, glycine and alanine were higher than those of other amino acids, and the content of each amino acid was not different by drying methods.

  • This study was performed to develop anti-obesity Phellineus linteus powder for application as food additives. P. linteus powders which contained anti-obesity lipase inhibitor were prepared by freeze drying and spray drying. Effects of various additives on the quality of their powders were investigated. 10% over addition of dextrin and gum-arabia was good in the rheological properties of their powders and optimal spray temperature was near $130^{\circ}C$. When their powders were sealed and storaged at room temperature for 6 months, its characteristics were not changed. Especially, changes of its colors was repressed by addition of 0.3 M oxalic acid, citric acid and ascorbic acid than those by non-treatment.

Present Deterioration Situation and Study on the Cleaning of the Surface of the Octagonal nine storied pagoda of Woljeongsa Temple (월정사팔각구층석탑의 손상현황과 표면오염물 제거연구)

  • The Octagonal nine storied pagoda of Woljeongsa Temple consists mainly of granite with the rockforming minerals quartz, plagioclase, microcline, and biotite. The surface of the stone stupa is light brown that has been discolored by the rust from the metal ornament and aids. The surface of the stylobate and roof stone is colonized by biological contaminants. Therefore, a comprehensive deterioration diagnosis was carried out in this study, and conservation treatment was conducted. It was proven that the $Fe^{2+}$ yield increases depending on the count of poultice used with oxalic acid, but the $Mg^{2+}$, $Al^{3+}$, and $Ca^{2+}$ yields were marginal following the preliminary test. Therefore, the use of poultice is an effective way of removing the rust, and only marginally influences the rock. The biological contaminants were removed through dry cleaning, and the soil located under the contaminants was removed through wet cleaning. Based on this, the dry and wet cleaning of all the biological contaminants, and the use of poultice with oxalic acid, were done to remove the rust. For the conservation treatment of the metal ornament, the rust was removed through physical cleaning, and anticorrosion treatment was performed on the iron ornament using Renaissance wax and copper ornament by BTA.

Evaluation of Corrosion Resistance and Weldability for the Butt Welding Zone of Hot Rolled Clad Steel Plates (열간압연 클래드강의 맞대기용접부 내식성 및 용접성 평가)

  • We have investigated the traits of clad metals in hot-rolled clad steel plates, including the sensitization and mechanical properties of STS 316 steel plate and carbon steel (A516), under various specific circumstances regarding post heat treatment, multilayered welds, and thick or repeated welds for repair. For evaluations, sectioned weldments and external surfaces were investigated to reveal the degree of sensitization by micro vickers hardness, tensile, and etching tests the results were compared with those of EPR tests. The clad steel plates were butt-welded using FCAW and SAW with the time of heat treatment as the variable, a that was conducted at $625^{\circ}C$, for 80, 160, 320, 640, and 1280 min. Then, the change in corrosion resistance was evaluated in these specimens. With carbon steel (A516), as the heat treatment time increased, the annealing effect caused the tensile strength to decrease. The micro-hardness gradually increased and decreased after 640 min. The elongation and contraction of the area also increased gradually. The oxalic acid etch test and EPR test on STS316 and the clad metal showed STEP structure and no sensitization. From the test results on multi-layered and repair welds, it could be concluded that there is no effect on the corrosion resistance of clad metals. The purpose of this study was to suggest some considerations for developing on-site techniques to evaluate the sensitization of stainless steels.

Effects of Supplemental Green LEDs to Red and Blue Light on the Growth, Yield and Quality of Hydroponic Cultivated Spinach (Spinacia oleracea L.) in Plant Factory (수경재배 식물공장에서 다양한 보광 LED가 시금치의 생육과 수량에 미치는 영향)

  • The effect of three different light qualities on growth, photosynthesis, quality and safe parameters of hydroponic cultivated spinach (Spinacia oleracea L.) were investigated indoor. Three different light qualities were created of red (660 nm), blue (450 nm) and green (550 nm) LEDs corresponding at ratio R660/B450 = 4/1 (RBL); R660/B450/G550= 5/2/3 (WWL); R660/B450/G550 = 1/1/1 (WL), which were tested at the same intensity (PPFD =190 μmol m-2 s-1). The results showed that the plant height and leaf number were the lowest in WL treatment. The SPAD, Net photosynthesis rate Pn, Fv/Fm, Leaf area index LAI values and all parameters of root characteristics were the highest in RBL treatment and were significantly different from two others. Fresh weight of stem, leaf and root, dry weight of root in the three light qualities were significantly different. In contrast, the highest K+ content in WL was different from WWL and RBL treatments, while Ca2+ and Fe2+ content were the highest in the RBL treatment. Vitamin C content was significantly different between the three treatments. nitrate and oxalic acid contents were the highest in WL treatment, whereas soluble-solids contents and vitamin C contents were the highest in RBL treatment. Oxalic acid, nitrate contents were observed tending reduced under WWL although oxalic acid content in RBL treatment was not different from WL and WWL treatments. In all three different light treatments were not detected Salmonella, E.coli. Our results suggest that RBL may be appropriate light for growth of spinach, but supplementary green light to a combination of red and blue LEDs at the reasonable rate can change the quality of spinach in a positive direction. Hydroponic cultivated spinach was safe for users.

Destruction of 2-Chloriphenol from Wastewater and Investigation of By-products by Ozonation

  • This study investigates the ozonation kinetics of 2-chlorophenol in wastewater under acidic condition. Intermediates and by-products generated during the process were rigorously identified and quantified. The major by-products are four carboxylic acids: tartaric acid, oxalic acid, maleic acid, and hydroxymalonic acid. The generation of these organic acids is in agreement with theoretical predictions. But hydroxylated compounds are more favorable to produce than their corresponding non-hydroxylated ones. Based on the information concerning the generation of organic acids and other aromatic intermediates, the complete reaction pathways toward mineralization can be proposed and mathematically modeled. The fitted second-order rate constants are in the same order of magnitude with the results from other studies. Using these oxidation pathways and the corresponding kinetic model, by-products generated in ozonation process can be predicted. This can help in optimizing the design and operation of any subsequent treatment processes.

A review on the softening of the fermented vegetables and the fruits (침채류와 과실의 연화현상에 관한 고찰)

  • The softening of the femented vegetables and the fruits was resulted from the degradation of pectin substances, cellulose, hemicellulose by polygalacturonase(PG), pectinesterase(PE), Cx-cellulase, $\beta$-galctosidase. The conversion of insoluble pectin to soluble pectin in cell wall-middle lamella was a major factor in the changes of firmness. Ca2+ was substantially increased firmness. However, Ca2+ could be removed from cell wall by chelating agents such as oxalic acid and citric acid. And Ca2+ was replaced with Na+ by ion exchange reaction. Ca2+ deficient tissue was vulnerable to attack by PG. Preheating treatment and Ca2+ addition is most effective in inhibiting the vegetable food softening and in increasing middle lamella-cell wall regidity, which PE activation by preheating treatment and Ca2+ addition could created more anionic carboxyl groups for cationic materials binding such as Ca2+ and chitosan and for polypectategel formation. Excessive demethylation by PE was associated with loosening of middle lamella cell wall components and softening.

The Efficiency of NOx Reduction by Regeneration and Wash Coating of Spent RHDM Catalyst (폐 RHDM 촉매의 재생 후 워시코팅에 의한 NOx 저감 효율)

  • Utilization of spent RHDM(Residue Hydrodemetallation) catalyst as de-NOx SCR(Selective Catalytic Reduction) catalyst was studied by conducting by heptane cleaning and high-temperature roasting for removal of deposited carbon and sulfur. Followed by oxalic acid leaching was carried out for controlling excess vanadium deposited on spent RHDM catalyst in search of appropriate vanadium loadings for the best SCR performance and the leaching conditions are 5~15wt% concentration of oxalic acid and 5min leaching time at $50^{\circ}C$ with the ultra-sonic agitator. De-NOx activities of prepared and commercial SCR catalyst were measured by the atmospheric SCR catalyst performance test unit, their residual content were also carried out by ICP, C&S Analysis and XRF. Acid leaching (AL-10) catalyst showed the highest de-NOx efficiency of all prepared catalysts and the de-NOx efficiency over wash coated catalyst(WC-AL-10) was equivalent to that of commercial SCR catalyst. Therefore the possibility of using as SCR catalyst for each application by adjusting treatment conditions of spent RHDM catalyst was found and further research will be needed in detail for the its commercialization.

Biological Improvement of Reclaimed Tidal Land Soil(IV) Changes of Saline Soil by addition of Organic Acids (해안간척지 토양의 생물학적 토성개선에 관한 연구 (제4보) 유기산첨가에 따르는 토양성분의 제 변화에 대하여)

  • In the previous paper(part III), a certian relationships between the changes of chlorinity and organic acid released from organic material were seemed to be concened to each other in saline soil suspension. Such a possibility had been a cause to take this experiments and this experiment was carried out under the treatment of organic acid crystal, oxalic acid and succinic acid, to the soil suspension(soil: water=20g:40cc) directly. The amount of organic acid treated to the suspension were related to the contents of organic material, as amount of organic acid per gram of organic material(391.76mg). The saline soil suspension were grouped and treated with the acids in order of 78.35mg(Group 1), 391.76mg(Group 2) 979.4mg(Group 3), and 1958.8mg(Group 4), respectively. Treated suspension had been incubated at room temperature and extract from suspension was used for analysis. Followings are summary of this report. 1) Changes of pH in soil suspension appeared a little increase after the treatment of organic acid until 168 hours. 2) Total acidity of soil suspension showed a variation, however, the values of total acidity appeared not to be increased or decreased during the period of experiment. 3) Sugar contents of soil suspension was increased until 168 hours after treatment. These results are similar tendency to the previous paper. 4) Addition of organic acid to soil suspension was confirmed not to be effective method for desalination from saline soil. Chlorinity of group 3 and 4 which were treated with high concentration of organic acid showed a decrease comparing to control group.
