  • Laser beam hardenling of 12%-Cr steel has been evaluated by using a continuous wave 3 kW CO$\_$2/ laser with a hardening mirror set. Experiment was performed on the optimum hardening condition with a laser power of 2.85kW and travel speed of 10 and 5 m/min. Multi passes have been alsotried to find the hardening characteristics of partly overlapped zone. The black paint to use at high temperature was adopted to increases the absorptivity of laser beam energy with the wavelength of 10.6 .mu. m at the surface of bese metal. The microstructure of the hardened layers was observed by using a light microscopy. SEM and TEM. A fine lamellar martensite formed in the hardened zones exhibits very high Vickers microhardness of 600 Hv, whereas the tempered martesite distributes in the base metal with Vickers microhardness of 240 Hv. It has been found that laser hardening with multi pass showed no significant drop of the hardness between adjacent passes.

  • This paper presents a theoretical and experimental study of a non-collocated pair of piezopolymer PVDF sensor and piezoceramic PZT actuator, which are bonded on a cantilever beam, in order to suppress unwanted vibration at the tip of the beam. The PZT actuator patch was bonded near the clamped part and the PVDF sensor, which was triangularly shaped, was bonded on the other part of the beam. This is because the triangular PVDF sensor is known that it can detect the tip velocity of a cantilever beam. Because the arrangement of the sensor and actuator pair is not collocated and overlapped each other, the pair can avoid so called 'the in-plane coupling'. The test beam is made of aluminum with the dimension of $200\times20\times2mm$, and the two PZT5H actuators are both $20\times20\times1mm$ and bonded on the beam out-of-phase, and the PVDF sensor is $178mm\times6mm\times52{\mu}m$. Before control, the sensor-actuator frequency response function is confirmed to have a nice phase response without accumulation in a reasonable frequency range of up to 5000 Hz. Both the DVFB and displacement feedback strategies made the error signal from the tip velocity (or displacement) sensor is transmitted to a power amplifier to operate the PZT actuator (secondary source). Both the control methods attenuate the magnitude of the first two resonances in the error spectrum of about 6-7 dB.

  • Ultra-lightweight cement composite (ULCC) with a compressive strength of 60 MPa and density of $1,450kg/m^3$ has been developed and used in the steel-concrete-steel (SCS) sandwich structures. This paper investigates the structural performances of SCS sandwich composite beams with ULCC as filled material. Overlapped headed shear studs were used to provide shear and tensile bond between the face plate and the lightweight core. Three-dimensional nonlinear finite element (FE) model was developed for the ultimate strength analysis of such SCS sandwich composite beams. The accuracy of the FE analysis was established by comparing the predicted results with the quasi-static tests on the SCS sandwich beams. The FE model was also applied to the nonlinear analysis on curved SCS sandwich beam and shells and the SCS sandwich beams with J-hook connectors and different concrete core including ULCC, lightweight concrete (LWC) and normal weight concrete (NWC). Validations were also carried out to check the accuracy of the FE analysis on the SCS sandwich beams with J-hook connectors and curved SCS sandwich structure. Finally, recommended FE analysis procedures were given.

  • The laser welding was performed for the flange joint of two overlapped coaxial circular pipes which serve as the inlet and connector pipes of STS 316L. The laser welding test finally resulted in a good penetration depth of 1.8 to 2.0 mm. On the way to get the good welding quality, two important parameters were found to be optimized. One is the focal positioning which is the offset of the laser beam focus to the exact welding seam line, which is more critical in the inner flange laser welding. When the beam spot size was deviated more than $200\;{\mu}m$ from the seam line, welding of two pipes is failed. The other is a gap size since a certain amount of gap is inevitable due to fabrication tolerance, or artificial allowances for smooth insertion of a pipe. However, it is required to restrict the gap allowance within 0.2mm to avoid undesirable undercut on a welding bead.

  • Titanium for dental implant application has the superior properties of biocompatibility, specific strength, and corrosion resistance. However, it is extremely difficult to find a suitable surface treatment method for sufficient osseointegration with biological tissue/bone cell and implant surface. Surface treatment technology using laser has been researched as the way to increase surface area of implant. In this study, to develop the surface treatment process with improved adhesion between implant and bone cell at the same time for superior biocompatibility, pulsed laser beam was overlapped continuously for scribed surface morphology and determination of friction coefficient. As the results, surface area and friction coefficient was increased over 2 times by the comparison with sand blasting, which is used for the conventional method. In this time, the optimal condition for laser beam power and beam irradiation speed was 13 watt and 50 mm/sec, respectively.

  • Purpose: This study compared panoramic radiography and cone beam computed tomography (CBCT) for evaluating the relationship between the maxillary sinus floor and the roots of maxillary molars. Materials and Methods: Paired panoramic radiographs and CBCT images from 97 subjects were analysed. This analysis classified 388 maxillary molars according to their relationship to the maxillary sinus floor on panoramic radiograph and CBCT. Correlations between these two radiographic techniques were examined. Results: Maxillary molar roots that were separate from the sinus floor showed the same classification in 100% of the cases when using these two imaging techniques. The corresponding percentage for such roots that were in contact with the sinus floor was 75%. When roots overlapped the maxillary sinus floor on panoramic radiographs, only 26.4% of maxillary first molars and 60.0% of second molars showed protrusion of roots into the sinus with CBCT. Conclusion : The results of the study suggest that roots projecting into the sinus on panoramic radiographs require a three-dimensional image in order to analyze the proximity of their apex to the sinus floor. • Engine valve seat and face, which are the important factors affecting engine performance, are required to have wear, heat and corrosion resistance. In order to produce surface layer with these characteristics, PTA(plasma transferred arc) surfacing procedure is generally employed, but problems, such as large HAZ and high dilution etc., frequently occurr. Laser cladding, which overcomes the drawbacks of conventional technologies, can be employed to create a superior clad layer with low dilution, small heat affected zone, and minimal distortion. However, in case cladding is to be applied to a large area, it is necessary to overlap 1 pass clad layer because of limited clad layer width. Two criteria for the overlapping ratio-beam size and clad layer width-have been considered thus far. Upon inspection of multi pass clads, produced by different overlapping criteria, it was observed that the greater the increase in overlapping ratio, the greater was the decrease in clad layer width and increase in clad layer height regardless of the criterion used. However, a multi pass clad overlapped by the beam size criterion demonstrated a higher hardness value than a clad overlapped by the clad layer width owing to decreasing dilution of the substrate. In conclusion, the beam size was defined as the criterion for the overlapping, because the clad layer width increased or decreased depending upon process parameters.

  • We report our development of the fabrication process of sub-micron scale $Al-AlO_x-Al$ tunnel junction by using electron-beam lithography and double-angle shadow evaporation technique. We used double-layer resist to construct a suspended bridge structure, and double-angle electron-beam evaporation to form a sub-micron scale overlapped junction. We adopted an e-beam insensitive resist as a bottom sacrificing layer. Tunnel barrier was formed by oxidation of the bottom aluminum layer between the bottom and top electrode deposition, which was done in a separate load-lock chamber. The junction resistance is designed and controlled to be 50 $\Omega$ to match the impedance of the transmission line. The junctions will be used in the broadband shot noise thermometry experiment, which will serve as a link between the electrical unit and the thermodynamic unit.

  • Multi-beam echo sounder is more precise and efficient than single beam echo sounder relatively because it is able to survey a wide area with 3 times or 4 times swath width as much as the depth of water using multi-beam echo sounder. It is sure to be needed to control supplementary equipment accurately, however, because the principle of creation and measurement of the beam is elaborate and influenced a great deal by vessel's motion. We analyzed using visual and statistical methods in both sections of the depth of water where were the places of the center of the beam and ± 45° angles from the central beam to improve the precise of Multi-beam echo sounder in this study. In result, it was required to control supplementary equipment because of errors from the vibration of an inertia governor and misalignment of extra units. Therefore, we reduced the vibration from the vessel's engine by sticking rubbers to the inertia governor and measured the offset values of extra units accurately, converted them to the values of horizontal position and lined up. In result, the precise in sounding the depth at the place of ± 45° from the center of the beam was improved from the level of the 1st order to the special order in a hydrographic survey of the IHO S44 standards and a phenomenon of ripple patterns in the overlapped area by misalignment was decreased remarkably.

  • In this study, the application of the single beam echosounder and multi beam echosounder was analyzed for the Youngsan river, from the Juksanbo to the Juksan bridge, length of 840m, width 230m and area $0.16km^2$. A single beam echosounder and a multi beam echosounder are mounted on an USV (Unmanned Surface Vessel), and each data is acquired. Then, TIN (Triangular Irregular Network) is created and the grid depth of 10m intervals is extracted. The grid depth of the single beam echo sounder and the grid depth of the multi beam echo sounder were overlapped to compare the two data. As a result of analysis using 5,024 data, the mean depth difference was 0.0319m and the standard deviation was 2.4095m. The river bed shape was similar to each other. If the multi-beam echo sounder is regarded as the standard, the volume difference of the stream is $161,882m^3$. With a multi-beam echo sounder installed, the operating distance increased by approximately 55% to 4595.85m, and the operating time increased by approximately 59% to approximately 47%.
