  • In recent years. YBCO coated conductor (CC) called as second generation HTS (high temperature superconducting) wire has been developed as a suitable material for resistive superconducting fault current limiter (SFCL). For designing the SFCL. the required length of superconducting wire is inverse proportional to the maximum temperature reached when a fault occurs. Since the required length strongly affects a manufacturing cost, it is the most important parameter to determine the maximum temperature reached. It is necessary to observe the repetitive over-current characteristics of HTS wire. This paper attempts to measure the variation of critical current of YBCO CC after repetitive over-current pulse. No degradation of the critical current of CC sample was observed by applying 100 times over-current pulse which makes temperature above 400 K after 100ms. This study can be useful in designing optimally resistive SFCL employing YBCO CC. The maximum permissible temperature can be set to 400K. so wire length could be reduced by 30% compared in case of 300K-criterion.

  • Recently, the load increasement and new regenerative systems of electrified railway system make it a difficult to distinguish between the load current and fault current. The failure of traction system perhaps causes over-current to flow. The high current can collapse other railway systems. If failures of the traction system takes place, the failures are detected and protected lest it should provoke high current flow. The over current from such a traction system failure permit to charge high tension voltage and produces high temperature arc, voltage instability, current cutting, and break down railway systems. The traction system failures detect and the system has to immediately cut off from over-current flow. To isolate the failure, the system can distinguish failure current from current flows. It forces us to adapt such as a new intelligent protection system. The protective system in traction system play a role of detecting and isolating failure points. In this paper, we proposed intelligent algorithm for discriminating normal and abnormal situation instead of the system being operated abnormally.

  • During magnetic inrush or over-excitation, saturation of the core in a transformer draws a significant exciting current, which can cause malfunction of a current-differential relay. This paper proposes a modified-current-differential relay for transformer protection. The relay calculates the core-loss current from the induced voltage and the core-loss resistance as well as the magnetizing current from the core flux and the magnetization curve. Finally, the relay obtains the modified differential current by subtracting the core-loss and the magnetizing currents from the conventional differential current. A comparative study of the conventional differential relay with harmonic blocking is presented. The proposed relay not only discriminates magnetic inrush and over-excitation from an internal fault, but also improves the relay speed.

  • In a low-voltage distribution system, the molded case circuit breaker (MCCB) is a widely used device to protect loads by interrupting over-current; however the hot gas generated from the arc discharge in the interrupting process depletes the dielectric recovery strength between electrodes and leads to re-ignition after current-zero. Even though the circuit breaker is ordinarily tripped and successfully interrupts the over-current, the re-ignition causes the over-current to flow to the load again, which carries over the failure interruption. Therefore, it is necessary to understand the dielectric recovery process and the dielectric recovery voltage of the MCCB. To determine these characteristics, a measuring system comprised of the experimental circuit and source is implemented to apply controllable recovery voltage and over-current. By changing the controllable recovery voltage, in this work, re-ignition is driven repeatedly to obtain the dielectric recovery voltage V-t curve, which is used to analyze the dielectric recovery strength of the MCCB. A measuring system and an evaluation technique for the dielectric recovery strength of the MCCB are described. By using this system and method, the measurement to find out the dielectric recovery characteristics after current-zero for ready-made products is done and it is confirmed that which internal structure of the MCCB affects the dielectric recovery characteristics.

  • Purpose : This study was to identify the effect of cognitive reaction following inactive electrode placement when applying anodal transcranial direct current stimulation over the primary motor cortex. Methods : For this study a total of 28 stroke patients participated. Before applying transcranial direct current stimulation, cognitive reaction was measured (P300 of event related potential, cognitive reaction time), and subjects were randomly assigned to two group. Transcranial direct current stimulation was applied to the scalp with an intensity of $0.04mA/cm^2$ for 15 minutes. All subjects were given an anode transcranial direct current stimulation over the primary motor area and inactive electrodes over the deltoid muscle (group I) and supra-orbital area (group II). Cognitive reactions were measured after applying transcranial direct current stimulation. Results : For this study a total of 28 stroke patients participated. • In economical points of view, AC loss of high temperature superconducting devices is considered as a serious problem that must be solved. Expecially, in case of HTS cables, HTS tapes are wound helically on the former to reduce AC loss. Critical characteristics of HTS tapes, however, are influenced by mechanical stress as well as electrical, temperature, and magnetical factors. The purpose of this study is to investigate the over current characteristics of HTS tapes given mechanical stress when they are wound on the former. We prepared HTS tapes with the pitch angle 20$^{\circ}$, length 25cm as well as tapes with pitch angle 0$^{\circ}$. When current of over 200A$\_$rms/ was applied, we found out that there are differences to the rate of resistance increase between the case of pitch angle 20$^{\circ}$and that of 0$^{\circ}$. The rate of resistance variation in HTS tapes of pitch angle 20$^{\circ}$increased more slowly than that of pitch angle 0$^{\circ}$. As a result, we concluded that if critical characteristics of HTS tapes are degraded by any external factor, when over current is applied, the current limiting characteristics in HTS tapes won't be able to be expected any more.

  • Rises of current level at power applications, such as transformer, motor, power cable need for using stacked HTS tapes. In this paper, we measured rises of temperature and tap voltage in 4-stacked HTS tapes under over-current condition. We measured 4-stacked HTS tapes properties under over-current condition with a little temperature rise as well as a large temperature rise. Rises of temperature and tap voltage are measured by using E-type thermocouples and voltage taps, respectively. According to the results of measurement, rises of tap voltage under over-current condition with a large temperature rises depends on rises of temperature.

  • To operate electric power systems economically and stably, and to supply the electric power of good quality, it is necessary that the measured information (current, voltage, and so on) be detected and transmutted with high reliability and high effieincy. For the reason, the optical magnetic field sensor is possible to rapidly detect to over current and recover when electric power line have fault. In addition, the optical sensor have no electro magnetic distortion and no electric insulation. In this study, we designed OCR(Over Current Relay) using optical sensor. The designed OCR using optical sensor was measured characteristic and compared contentional OCR. This system have highest optical advantages and reliability.
