Propose, Design and Control of a New Actuator Using MR Fluid (MR 유체를 이용한 새로운 액추에이터의 제안, 설계 및 제어)

  • A new MR cylinder with built-in valves using Magneto - Rheological fluid (MR valve) is proposed for fluid power control systems. The MR fluid is a newly developed functional fluid whose obvious viscosity is controlled by the applied magnetic field intensity. This MR cylinder, which is composed of cylinder with small clearance and piston with electromagnet, has the characteristics of simple, compact and reliable structure. This paper presents a method to control the pressure of MR cylinder by using Generalized Predictive Control (GPC) algorithm. The differential pressure is controlled by applying magnetic field intensity to MR fluid. The use of GPC controller is to generate a control sequence by minimizing a cost function in such a way that the future system output is driven close to reference over finite prediction horizons. Experimental results from real time control using GPC method compared with conventional PID control method are also shown in this paper.

Electromagnetically Excited Audible Noise in Electrical Machines

  • With the rising utilisation of electrical machines to increase the output-Power of the device several problems occur. Next to probable additional losses and other parasitic effects, aspects concerning the audible noise radiated by the device are of particular interest. This contribution is intended to give an overview to the problematic of the analysis of vibrations and audible noise radiated by electrical machines. It is not the intention of the authors to set off a scientific firework with various complicated equations in this contribution. The paper should rather give an insight in a complicated technical matter and should help to understand the mechanism of vibration and parasitic noise generation in electrical machines. Rotating machines, such as the induction motor as well as non-rotating electrical machines, such as inductors or transformers are studied. The origin of vibrations leading to noise radiations is studied and discussed to illustrate the way in which the analysis of the governing effects can be performed. Magnetically generated radial pullout force waves in rotating electrical machines are the main cause of the excited audible noise, whereas magnetostriction plays an important role in transformers.

  • POSTECH Graduate School of Wind Energy is trying to upgrade the PMSG used for Unison U50 to 900 kW class. Intensive optimization efforts are carried out the reduce the axial size and total weight of the generator while increasing the rated output to 900 kW. The generator features 3.32m stator inner radius, 671mm stator length, 84 pole, 25 rated rpm and 31.6kN/$m^2$ shear force density. To reduce the gross weight, the stronger magnetic material is applied with optimal magnet size resulting lowest cogging torque. Also, instead of stator skewing the stator, the magnet position along the circumference is optimized to further reduce the cogging torque. This scheme eliminates the stator skewing procedure and may enhance the productivity. This method also reduces the total harmonic distortion. In this report, upgrade method, no-load line to line voltage and phase voltage, cogging torque, loss calculations and thermal analysis are presented.

Active Structural Acoustical Control of a Smart Panel Using Direct Velocity Feedback (직접속도 피드백을 이용한 지능판의 능동구조음향제어)

  • This paper presents a study of low frequencies volume velocity vibration control of a smart panel in order to reduce sound transmission. A distributed piezoelectric quadratically shaped polyvinylidene fluoride (PVDF) polymer film is used as a uniform force actuator and an array of $4\;{\times}\;4$ accelerometer is used as a volume velocity sensor for the implementation of a single-input single-output control system. The theoretical and experimental study of sensor-.actuator frequency response function shows that this sensor-actuator arrangement provides a required strictly positive real frequency response function below about 900 Hz. Direct velocity feedback could therefore be implemented with a limited gain which gives reductions of about 15 dB in vibration level and about 8 dB in acoustic power level at the (1,1) mode of the smart panel. It has been also shown that the shaping error of PVDF actuator could limit the stability and performance of the control system.

  • Lattice reduction (LR) has been used widely in conventional multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO) systems to enhance the performance. However, LR is hard to be applied to the relay systems which are important but more complicated in the wireless communication theory. This paper introduces a new viewpoint for utilizing LR in multiuser MIMO relay systems. The vector precoding (VP) is designed along with zero force (ZF) criterion and minimum mean square error (MMSE) criterion and enhanced by LR algorithm. This implementable precoder design combines nonlinear processing at the base station (BS) and linear processing at the relay. This precoder is capable of avoiding multiuser interference (MUI) at the mobile stations (MSs) and achieving excellent performance. Moreover, it is shown that the amount of feedback information is much less than that of the singular value decomposition (SVD) design. Simulation results show that the proposed scheme using the complex version of the Lenstra--Lenstra--Lovász (LLL) algorithm significantly improves system performance.

  • The current environment of technological and competitive changes influences not only the business R&D environment but also government driven national R&D strategies. Open innovation has now become an important paradigm that is replacing the outdated paradigm of closed innovation. Many companies and nations have been increasing R&D investment because R&D has been considered a driving force for national and corporate competitive advantage. The purpose of this paper is to evaluate and compare the performance of R&D focused on open innovation according to scientific and technological outputs which is based on paper publications, patents and etc. Comparisons should not be only based on the quantity but also on the quality of the output. This paper shows that it is possible to develop DEA models that utilize the Analytical Hierarchical Process in order to transform the qualitative index into a quantitative index. Hence, the relative efficiency for R&D organizations is obtained based on both quantity and quality outputs and subsequently provides comprehensive and realistic methods for decision makers to identify levels of project efficiency.

Conceptual Design of the Scroll Air Compressor for Fuel Cell (연료전지용 스크롤 공기압축기 개념설계)

  • Potential application of the scroll type machine to air compressor for fuel cell has been studied. Among the seven configuration factors which determine scroll wrap profile, the wrap thickness and the orbiting radius were chosen as two independent variables to generate various scroll wrap profiles. A conceptual design practice was conducted for scroll air compressor for SOFC with power output of 2 kW. With larger wrap thickness and orbiting radius, base plate area of the orbiting scroll becomes smaller, so is the axial gas force acting on the base plate, resulting in reduced thrust loss in spite of larger friction velocity. Performance analysis on the designed model showed that its total efficiency was 64.4% with the mass flow rate per unit compressor input of 0.00905 kg/(s kW) for the wrap thickness of 3.5 mm and the orbiting radius of 3.0 mm.

  • This paper deals with system identification of a three-story building model with active mass damper (MID) for the controller design. Observer Kalman filter identification (OKID) technique is applied to find the relationship between the experimental results of the input and output. The inputs to the building model with MID are ground accelerations and motor command signal, which are, respectively, simulated earthquake and equivalent control force. The outputs are each floor acceleration and MID acceleration. The MID controller is designed based on the experimentally identified building system. Finally it is shown that experimental results agree accurately with simulated results.

  • This paper presents a robust centralized control scheme for a magnetic bearing system which supports a rigid rotor at both shaft ends in the radial direction. The negative stiffness element and the inductive force associated with bearing magnetic field are considered in the dynamic model of the system. For this model, the controllability and observability are examined, and then a robust control theory is applied to design two types of multi-input multi-output servocontrollers. A general servocompensator is embedded in the first one and a centralized PID controller is suggested as a second one. By simulation study, the performance of two types of servocontrollers are compared in the aspects of disturbance rejection, reference tracking and the robustness limit.

  • ln this paper, a micromachined micromechanical switch is presented. The presented switch is operated in the vertical direction to the substrate by an electrostatic force between two parallel plates. The moving plate is pulled down to connect the bumps of the bias node$(V_{DD}/ or GND)$ to the bumps of the output node when a oltage difference exists between the moving plate and the input plate. The switch was designed to operate at a low switching voltage$(\risingdotseq5V)$ by including a large-area, narrow-gap, parallel plate capacitor A theoretical analysis of the designed switch was performed in order to determine its geometry fitting the desired pull-in voltage and release voltage. The designed switch was fabricated by surface micromachining combined with Ni electroplating. From the experimental results of the fabricated switch, its pull-in voltage came Out to be less than 5V and the measured maximum allowable current was 150mA. The measured average ON-state resistance was about 8$\Omega$, and the OFF-state resistance was too high to be measured with digital multimeter.
