Nerine from south africa and its sparkling flower shape make us estimate it as a hopeful kind of cut follow. There was a few studies on Nerine in korea. We started this study to set bulb propagation methods. The propagation by tissue culture was changeable according to the growth regulators The best growth regulator combination which makes a lot of Bulblet was NAA $0{\sim}0.5$ + BA $0.5{\sim}2.0mg\;{\cdot}\;L^{-1}$ in Nerine bowdenii ‘Favourite’ and Nerine sarniens ‘Red’ respectively. The adjust culture media source for tissue culture were glucose 9% as a carbon source and ($NH_4+NO_3$) 40mM as a nitrogen source. When glucose was used as a carbon source, Bulblet were harvested a little bit low then sucrose but comparative emergence rate was so high that it is good for carbon source in nerine tissue culture. When we consist culture media as MS+BA $1.0mg\;{\cdot}\;L^{-1}$+sucose 7% + ($NH_4+NO_3$) 40mM, the produced Bulblet were reached up to 1.7 each per bulb and emergence rate was up to 100% irrespective of acclimatization period. The suitable culture explant for nerine tissue culture was scale. When scale was cultured with MS+BA $1.0mg\;{\cdot}\;L^{-1}$+sucose 7%, its propagation efficiency was 54 times greater than using growing point. A proper culture part of the scaly leaf was middle part (8 scaly leaf from outer 8th scaly leaf) when middle part was cultured the number of Bulblet were up to 1.8 each per explant.
Morphological characters of Baemoochae, xBrassicoraphanus are mostly intermedium of the both parents, Chinese cabbage, Brassica rapa ssp. pekinensis and radish, Raphanus sativus. The upper and lower parts of the leaf resemble the shape of Chinese cabbage and radish, respectively. The midrib of the leaf is round like to that of radish, but very big more than 3 cm in diameter and white in color like that of Chinese cabbage. The root was changed from the swollen type like that of radish to the enlarged taproot like that of the land race of Chinese cabbage after attaining genetical stability. The flower is white. The seed pod is divided into 2 different parts; the upper part is radish and about 4 cm in length and holds 3-4 seeds and the lower part is Chinese cabbage and about 3 cm in length and holds 7-8 seeds. The color of seed is brown, weight per 1.000 seeds is 5.5 g and the number of seeds per mL is 120. The matured plant in the fall season is around 5 kg in weight and outer leaves are very vigorous and stiffly and inner leaves are erect and form a loose head. The leaf and the root contain a high level of sulforaphene which is well known as a functional substance for anti-cancer and anti-super-bacteria. Baemoochae is an amphidiploid and does not have the self incompatibility function. It has a high level of cross compatibility with Chinese cabbage as the female parent, but not the male parent. It is cross incompatible to cabbage, B. oleracea, black mustard, B. nigra and radish. However it is highly compatible to oil seed rape, B. napus, yellow mustard, B. carinata and partial compatible to muatard, B. juncea in the reciprocal cross.

This study was conducted to assess the influence of hazard pattern in the surface structure of pollen grains of Campsis grandiflora, and cytotoxicity of different part extracts and nectar on RAW264.7 macrophages. The pollen grains were medium sized ($21.8{\mu}m$) with tricolpate aperture type. In equatorial view, the pollens were prolate (P/E=1.8) and the exine pattern was smooth and reticulate. This result contradict with the rumor of having a hook-shaped protuberance that can damage the cornea because we couldn't observed any protuberance on the surface of the outer wall. Furthermore, we investigated the 70% MeOH extracts (flower, leaf, stem) and nectar of C. grandiflora for their cell viability in temporal basis via MTT analysis on RAW264.7 macrophage cells. There was no significant difference in the cytotoxicity among the MeOH extracts and nectar of C. grandiflora after 24 h. However, nectar showed the dosedependent cytotoxicity on RAW264.7 macrophage cells after 48 h.
In November 2008, typical powdery mildew symptoms were observed on leaves of Arabidopsis thaliana ecotype Col-0 plants in a growth room under controlled laboratory conditions at Korea University, Seoul. The disease was characterized by the appearance of white powder-like fungal growth on the surface of infected leaves. As the disease progressed, infected leaves exhibited chlorotic or necrotic brown lesions, and leaf distortion and senescence. Conidiophores of the causal fungus were hyaline, unbranched, 3-4 celled, cylindrical, and $80-115{\times}6-9{\mu}m$ in size. Singly produced conidia (pseudoidium type) were hyaline, oblong to cylindrical or oval in shape, and $26-55{\times}15-20{\mu}m$ in size with a length/width ratio of average 3, angular/rectangular wrinkling of outer wall and no distinct fibrosin bodies. Appressoria on the hyphae were multi-lobed. These structures are typical of the powdery mildew Oidium subgenus Pseudoidium, anamorph of the genus Erysiphe. The measurements of the fungal structures coincided with those of Erysiphe cruciferarum. The phylogenetic analysis using ITS rDNA sequences revealed that the causal fungus Erysiphe sp. KUS-F23994 is identical to E. cruciferarum. The isolated fungus incited powdery mildew symptoms on the inoculated Arabidopsis leaves, which proved Koch's postulates. Taken all data together, we first report the occurrence of powdery mildew disease of A. thaliana caused by Erysiphe cruciferarum in Korea.
A tarsonemid mite. Stet~rotc~r.sot~rrrs~puin.sk i Smiley 1967. is an important rice pest in major rice producing countries of Thailand. Philippine. China, and Taiwan. S. spinki was found first time in Korea from rice grown in environment controlled greenhouse. Rice fed by the mite showed damage symptoms of deformed panicles and inflorescence, lesions on the inner surface of leaf sheath, and browning of rice hulls. Females of S. .spi~lkwi as 263.0 pni (246.5-284.6f 12.2) in body length and 92.4 pm (79.5- 104.9 t 7.6) in body width. Body was elongate and broadest in region of hysterosoma. Body color was pale brown. Legs were robust except for the legs IV which were typical tarsonemid female legs terminating in a whiplike seta two times the length of the leg. Male of S. spir~kiw as 196.5 pm ( 176.5-222.8 + 15.8) in body length and 109.3 ym (98.6- 1 17.7 + 6.4) in body width. Anterior ends of apodemes 111 were extended further than apodemes IV. Femur IV had large inner median lateral flange. and inner anterior and outer median setae were short about equal length. Tarsal claw was stout and curved ventrally.

This study was conducted to examine the effects of defoliation treatment on the growth and yield of strawberry ($Fragaria{\times}ananassa$ cv. Maehyang and Seolhyang) during nursery period. Leaves of strawberry plantlet had been removed except two, three and four fully expanded leaves until planting date. As the intensity of defoliation was strong, the petiole length was reduced and overgrowth of strawberry plantlet was suppressed. Outer diameter of crown in defoliation treatments significantly decreased but inner diameter of crown was not significant. Number of primary roots of the 3 leaves or 4 leaves defoliation treatment generally tended to increase, but there was not significantly different among treatments. Fresh weight and leaf area in the defoliation treatments significantly decreased and the root weight were higher in partial 3 leaves or 4 leaves defoliation treatment but was not significantly different among treatments. Because T/R ratio decreased significantly as growth inhibition of above-ground part compared to underground part, it is considered easy to take rooting after plantlet plating. As the intensity of defoliation was strong, chlorophyll contents tended to decrease significantly. Reduction of the endogenous nitrogen by defoliation effectively led to promote floral differentiation at low temperature and short day condition. This promoted timing of budding and flowering and also induced uniform flowering after plantlet planting. Marketable fruit yield of 3 leaves defoliation treatment tended to be higher than the control.

The plant morphological and chromosome characteristics of 'Bonanza', 'Coral Candy' and 'Purple Crystal', a formolongi-Asiatic (FA) interspecific hybrid species bred at the National Institute of Horticultural Science, Rural Development Administration (RDA), were investigated in this study. The flowering time of these species were found to have some variation. 'Bonanza' flowers in the middle to late June (medium-late maturing cultivar), 'Coral Candy' in the mid of June (medium maturing cultivar), and 'Purple Crystal' was observed to be in early June (early maturing cultivar). The flowering direction of all three cultivars are upward facing flowers and having a weak fragrance. The height of the plants was recorded in the range between 101.0 cm ('Purple Crystal') to 142.3 cm ('Bonanza'), thus they are able to develop cut flowers with excellent stem elongation. Flower diameters of 'Bonanza' (17.1 cm) and 'Coral Candy' (16.9 cm) were classified to be large sized flowers. On the other hand, 'Purple Crystal' had a narrow flower diameter (12.3 cm) with an outer petal width of more than 4.0 cm. Leaf length was observed for 'Bonanza' (15.7 cm), 'Coral Candy' (19.7 cm), and 'Purple Crystal' (11.1 cm). Chromosome analysis was done using FISH technique. Results revealed that all three cultivars were observed as triploids (2n=3x=36). FISH analysis also showed 5S/45S rDNA of 'Bonanza', 'Coral Candy' and 'Purple Crystal' as 4/11 loci, 4/12 loci, and 4/11 loci, respectively. The results of the FISH analysis are useful as markers to distinguish cultivars, since the patterns of rDNA observed on the remaining chromosomes are significantly different except FISH patterns of chromosome #3.

The objective of this study was to analyze the microclimate and the growth of tomato and lettuce in the greenhouses covered with spectrum conversion films using different phosphor particles sizes. Two spectrum conversion films using phosphor particles larger than $10{\mu}m$ (Micro-film) and smaller than 500 nm (Nano-film) in radius, and poly-ethylene (PE) film were used in double-layered greenhouses as outer coverings. PE films were used as inner coverings in all the greenhouses. Thickness of the films for inner and outer coverings was 0.06 mm. Tensile strength, elongation, and tearing resistance of the Micro- and Nano-films were not different from those of the PE film. Transmittances at a wavelength of 300-1100 nm were a little higher at the Micro-film and lower at the Nano-film than that of the PE film, respectively. Air temperatures at the Micro- and Nano-films were over $2^{\circ}C$ higher than at the PE film, but no significant difference was observed between the two light conversion films. The soil temperature at the Nano-film was $1.5^{\circ}C$ and $3^{\circ}C$ higher than at the Micro- and PE films, respectively. The yields of tomato at the Micro- and Nano-films were 12% and 14% higher than at the PE film, but no significant difference was observed between the two spectrum conversion films. The total soluble solid showed no significant differences among all the films. The yields of lettuces at the Micro- and Nano-films were 27% and 59% higher than at the PE film. Hunter's red (a) value of the lettuce leaf was the highest at the Nano-film. In this experiment, tomatoes requiring high irradiation were better at the Nano film, while lettuce requiring low irradiation better at the Micro film.

Local heating system providing hot air locally to growing parts including shoot apex and flower cluster which were temperature-sensitive organs of cherry tomato was developed to reduce energy consumption for greenhouse heating without decline of crop growth. Growing part following local heating system was composed of double duct distributer which connected inner and outer ducts with hot air heater and winder which moved ducts up and down following growing parts with plant growth. Growing part local heating system was compared with conventional bottom duct heating system with respect to distributions of air and leaf surface temperatures according to height, growth characteristics and energy consumption. By growing part local heating, air temperature around growing part was maintained $0.9{\sim}2.0^{\circ}C$ higher than that of lower part of crop and leaf surface temperature was also stratified according to height. Investigations on crop growth characteristics and crop yield showed no statistically significant difference except for plant height between bottom duct heating and growing part local heating. As a result, the growing part local heating system consumed 23.7% less heating energy than the bottom duct heating system without decrease of crop yield.

Lodging is a serious issue in rice production, because it drastically decreases the biomass production and grain yield. Since the Green Revolution, the lodging resistance has been increased by lowering the moment of above-ground parts due to the short culm by the semi-dwarf gene sd1. However, it has been pointed out that sd1 alone has suppressive effects for biomass production and yield. To increase rice yield, the long-culm and large panicle type varieties with a superior lodging resistance need to be developed. To improve the lodging resistance and yield of these type varieties, it would be effective to identify novel alleles for these traits underlying natural variations in rice and to pyramid these alleles to a single rice variety. In order to perform this strategy, we have developed new rice lines derived from crosses among varieties with superior alleles. At first, TULT-gh-5-5 was selected from a cross between strong culm and high biomass variety Leaf Star and high-yielding variety Takanari, and TUAT-32HB was selected from a cross between high-yielding variety Akenohoshi and Takanari. Then, we developed the super thick-culm and super grain-bearing line, LTAT-29 derived from a cross between TULT-gh-5-5 and TUAT-32HB. In the current study, to identify the QTLs and genes relating to the strong culm and the high yield of LTAT-29, we performed QTL analysis using SNPs markers with $F_2$ population derived from a cross between LTAT-29 and Takanari. LTAT-29 has never lodged throughout the growth period despite it had long culms and heavy panicles. LTAT-29 had a larger outer diameter of the culm and twice the size of the section modulus than Takanari. As a result, the bending moment at breaking of LTAT-29 was significantly larger than that of Takanari. Brown rice yield of LTAT-29 was $9.2t\;ha^{-1}$ about 10% higher than that of Takanari due to the larger number of spikelets per panicle. LTAT-29 had a greater number of secondary branches per panicle. In the $F_2$ population between LTAT-29 and Takanari, we found continuous frequency distributions in the section modulus and the spikelet number per panicle. Two QTLs increased the section modulus by the alleles of LTAT-29 were detected on Chr.1L and Chr.2L. One QTL increased the spikelet number per panicle of Takanari by the allele of LTAT-29 was detected on Chr.1L, and two QTLs increased the number of secondary branches per panicle by the alleles of LTAT-29 were detected on Chr.1L and Chr.4L. It was found that the alleles of these QTLs were the japonica type originated from Leaf Star or Akenohoshi. The novel QTLs for the traits related to super thick-culm and super grain-bearing and their combinations could be utilized for improving the lodging resistance and yield in rice varieties.
