Unlike existent field flow fractionation, new method, osmotic sink field flow fractionation is introduced and used ultrafiltration hollow fiber membranes as separation channel. This hollow fiber osmotic sink field flow fractionation is called HF-OSFFF. A theory that describes the retention, relaxation, resolution, plate number for the system, has been developed and experimentally verified by separation model of po1ystyrene latex beads. At external field, it is measured that radial flow rates change according to various concentrations of PEG solutions. Concentration of PEG solution vs. radial flow rate is a linear relation. For diameter distribution of unknown polymer sample, HF-OSFFF compared with the commercial capillary hydrodynamic flow fractionation (CHDF).

Because of increasing demand, a small portable drug injector that uses osmotic pressure for its operation force is developed, and its performance is evaluated. The osmotic drug injector can be small and lightweight because it does not require heavy batteries and an actuator, unlike previous electromechanical drug injectors. Moreover, its injection pressure can be sustained longer than that of previous elastic drug injectors. The new device is composed of a drug sac, osmotic pressure chamber, semipermeable membrane, and solvent chamber. To evaluate its performance, an in-vitro experiment was designed to measure the outflow and the injection pressure with respect to time. The experimental results show that the new drug infuser can continuously deliver 20 ml drug over a period of 20 h. The maximum injecting pressure was over 400 mmHg. Which prevents backflow caused by changes in the outlet pressure resulting from changes to the position of the device and the patient's posture.

Digitaria exilis L. is an under-utilized crop with high nutritional and medicinal values. It thrives in and is well-adapted to arid areas with low soil nutrients. Using biochemical markers, this study investigates the mechanisms by which D. exilis responds to osmotic stress. Three accessions Dinat Iburua (DIN), Jakah Iburua (JAK) and Jiw Iburua (JIW) were collected from National Cereal Research Institute, Niger State. Two accessions, NG/11/JD/061 and NG/11/JD/062 were also collected from National Centre for Genetic Resources and Biotechnology, Ibadan. Murashige and Skoog medium of approximately 1.2 L was supplemented with polyethylene glycol 6000 to create osmotic pressures of -9.29, -13.93, -20.13, -26.32, -32.51, and 0 MPa (control). Sterilized seeds were inoculated in the medium and placed in the growth room for 4 weeks. Proline accumulation was significantly high in all JAK plants under osmotic stress. Proline and ascorbate peroxidase (p<0.05) activities were directly correlated, thus reinforcing the survivability of JAK during stress. Catalase (CAT) activity was also significantly induced in JAK under osmotic stress, which synergistically improved its tolerability. As a result, >50% of OH-, H2O2, and NO radicals were scavenged. However, other accessions including DIN, NG061, NG062, and JIW showed variations in their responses to different levels of osmotic stress, although not significant. Therefore, JAK possesses a well-equipped free radical quenching system that is protected by the accumulation of the osmolyte proline; therefore, accession JAK is considered osmotolerant. CAT and superoxide dismutase activities were osmostabilized against oxidative stress by proline.
The blood-brain barrier (BBB) of rats was modificated opening reversibly by infusing a hyperosmotic solution of arabinose (1.6 molal) into the right external carotid artery. Pre vious studies demonstrated that permeability was increased maxmmally in the first 15 min and remained slightly elevated at 1 hr. As control reference, saline was used. In the present study, to evaluate the effects of osmotic BBB opening on the BBB trasport according to hydrophilic or hydrophobic characteristics of drugs. And the differences of the uptakes of these compounds to right (treated osmotic opening) and left (untreated) hemispheres in same rats were compared each other following injection of 8 mCi per rat of $^{99m}Tc$-ethylene triamine pentaacetic acid (DTPA) as hydrophilic drug or 5mg/kg of phenytoin as hydrophobic drug mto the right external carotid artery of rats between two groups (1.6 molal arabinose vs saline). The uptakes of $^{99m}Tc$-DTPA and phenytoin in the right cerebral hemispheres were increased to about thirty three times and twice rather than those in the left cerebral heimspheres, respectively. And PAs (permeability X capillary surface area) were also increased from a control mean of 2.11${\times}10^{-4}$ (Untreated) to 6.98${\times}10^{-3}\;sec^{-1}$ (treated osmotic opening for $^{99m}Tc$-DTPA and 0.29 to 0.17 $sec^{-1}$ for phenytoin, respectively. From the results of present study, it is noted that osmotic opening of BBB is more effective in the brain delivery of hydrophilic drugs rather than that of hydrophobic drugs.

Three Echinochloa species inhabit various crop fields with different soil moisture conditions. Therefore, a growthpouch test was conducted to investigate adaptive diversity of six Echinochloa species, three from Korea and three from USA, toosmotic stress by assessing shoot and root growths. Echinochloa crus-galli var. praticola showed the greatest tolerance to osmoticstress in both root ($GR_{50}=1316.3g\;PEG\;L^{-1}$) and shoot ($GR_{50}=212.2g\;PEG\;L^{-1}$) growths, while Korean E. oryzicola was mostsensitive to osmotic stress in both root ($GR_{50}=116g\;PEG\;L^{-1}$) and shoot ($GR_{50}=126.2g\;PEG\;L^{-1}$) growths. Root to shoot (R/S) ratioof Echinochloa crus-galli var. praticola increased with increasing osmotic stress, while that of Korean E. oryzicola decreased, suggestingthat R/S ratio is closely related to osmotic stress tolerance in Echinochloa species. Our results clearly demonstrate that E. crus-galli var.praticola maintains high R/S ratio even under high osmotic stress, which enables this species to well adapt to dry upland condition. Incontrast, while E. oryzicola fails to maintain sufficiently high R/S ratio, resulting in poor adaptability to dry upland condition.
Objective: This study investigated whether adding outer-well medium to inhibit osmotic changes in culture media in a dry-type incubator improved the clinical outcomes of in vitro fertilization-embryo transfer (IVF-ET) cycles. Methods: In culture dishes, the osmotic changes in media (20 µL)-covered oil with or without outer-well medium (humid or dry culture conditions, respectively) were compared after 3 days of incubation in a dry-type incubator. One-step (Origio) and G1/G2 (Vitrolife) media were used. Results: The osmotic changes in the dry culture condition (308 mOsm) were higher than in the humid culture conditions (285-290 mOsm) after 3 days of incubation. In day 3 IVF-ET cycles, although the pregnancy rate did not significantly differ between the dry (46.2%) and humid culture (51.0%) groups, the rates of abortion and ongoing pregnancy were significantly better in the humid culture group (1.5% and 49.5%, respectively) than in the dry culture group (8.3% and 37.8%, respectively, p<0.05). In day 5 IVF-ET cycles, the abortion rate was significantly lower in the humid culture group (2.2%) than in the dry culture group (25.0%, p<0.01), but no statistically significant difference was observed in the rates of clinical and ongoing pregnancy between the dry (50.0% and 25.0%, respectively) and humid culture groups (59.5% and 57.3%, respectively) because of the small number of cycles. Conclusion: Hyperosmotic changes in media occurred in a dry-type incubator by evaporation, although the medium was covered with oil. These osmotic changes were efficiently inhibited by supplementation of outer-well medium, which resulted in improved pregnancy outcomes.
Osmotic pellet system, which is one of the oral drug delivery systems, has been developed to improve manufacturing process, reduce product cost and other problems of osmotic tablet systems. Osmotic pellet is consisted of water swellable seed layer, drug layer, and membrane layer. Among them, the membrane layer plays an important role in a control of the drug release. In this work, we examined the effect of ratio for Eudragit RL and RS on the drug release behavior. Osmotic pellet with nifedipine as a model drug was easily obtained in a good yield by fluidized bed coater. Osmotic pellet showed round morphology with a range of size $1300{\sim}1500\;{\mu}m$. In the experiment of nifedipine release, the release amount increased with the increase of the ratio of Eudragit. This is due to the fact that Eudragit RL contains more hydrophilic quaternary ammonium group than Eudragit RS. Additionally, the release amount was retarded with increasing the membrane thickness. There are no differences in the release amount measured at the different pH 1.2, 6.5, 6.8, and 7.2. In conclusion, it was found that the drug release from osmotic pellets depended on the composition ratio and coating thickness of membrane layer.

Seeds of Tomato (Lycopersicon esculentum Mill.) have demanded high quality because of their high cost of seed. The optimization of the seed priming techniques that have positive effect on fast and uniform germination becomes important at the commercial level. Several factors such as solution composition, osmotic potential, and treatment duration affect seed priming response. In this study, osmotic potentials of priming solution and germination characteristics of primed seed were investigated to clarify the effects different inorganic salt types and the duration. Tomato seeds were primed in osmotic solutions that were osmotic potential ranged -1.54 to -0.45 MPa in an aerated solution of PEG 8000 (17%, 22%, 27%), and inorganic salt solution of $KNO_3$, $Na_2SO_4$, and $K_2SO_4$ (100, 200, 300mM). The seeds were treated at $20^{\circ}C$ for 2, 4, and 6 days. After each treatment, the seeds were dried to moisture content ranged 5-8% at $25^{\circ}C$. Four replications of 25 seeds per each treatments were placed in 10-cm petri dishes containing two filter papers and 3 ml of $dH_2O$ and incubated at $20^{\circ}C/30^{\circ}C$ and $15^{\circ}C$ and seedlings evaluated for abnormality after 14 days of incubation. Seed water potential (${\psi}$) was correlated with water potential of priming solution ($r^2=0.86$). Seeds primed in 100mM $KNO_3$ resulted the highest germination rate (GR, $63.9 %{\cdot}day^{-1}$) and lowest mean germination time (MGT, 2.0 days) comparing to untreated control ($23.9%{\cdot}day^{-1}$ of germination rate and 4.1 days of MGT) at $20/30^{\circ}C$, even though 96% of germination percentage were not different. Seeds primed in 100mM $KNO_3$ (${\psi}=-0.45MPa$) for 4 days showed ${\psi}=-0.38MPa$. Priming in $Na_2SO_4$, $K_2SO_4$, and PEG solution for 6 days improved MGT and GR, but not significantly than 4 days of treatment. Additionally, stepwise osmotic solution treatment with 100mM and 300mM concentration for 6 day did not showed differences with single treatment. In relation to osmotic potentials, identical osmotic potential in different inorganic salt solution showed different effect on germination characteristics.
The quality of salted and semi-dried mackerel prepared by cold osmotic dehydration using a high osmotic pressure resin during storage at $5{\pm}1^{\circ}C$ was evaluated. The moisture contents in salted and semi-dried mackerel decreased in. range of 4 during storage. The brown pigment formation content and peroxide value of salted and semi-dried mackerel prepared by osmotic dehydration were more lower than those of salted and semi-dried mackerel prepared by traditional drying methods such as sun-drying, hot-air drying and cold air drying. The viable cell count and histamine contents of cold osmotic dried products were much lower and revealed a tendency to increase during storage, but even these values after storage of 15 days showed that the salted and semi-dried mackerel was safety in respect of food sanitation. The ratio of saline soluble nitrogen to total nitrogen in cold osmotic dried products were higher than that of traditional dried products during storage. Judging from the results of chemical and sensory evaluation, shelf-life of salted and semi-dried mackerel by cold osmotic drying were more longer than that of salted and semi-dried mackerel prepared by traditional drying.
Osmotic pellet, which consisted of water-swellable seed layer, drug layer, and porous membrane layer, has been widely utilized in oral drug delivery system. In this work, we describe the preparation of osmotic pellet with nifedipine as model drug and a mixture of cellulose acetate (CA) and Eudragit RS as membrane layer, and then examined the drug release behavior on the variation of the thickness change of membrane layer (CA and Eudragit RS) and release media. Furthermore, we examined the nifedipine release behavior using sodium alginate as a potential membrane candidate. Osmotic pellet was obtained in the quantitative yield by fluidized bed coater. Osmotic pellet exhibited the round morphology and the size ranging $1500{\sim}1700{\mu}m$ in SEM. The nifedipine release decreased as the thickness of membrane layer (CA and Eudragit RS) increased. In addition, it observed that there is difference of release amount in between intestinal juice (pH 6.8) and gastric juice (pH 1.2). In the case of osmotic pellet coated with sodium alginate, nifedipine release behavior depended on the crosslinking of sodium alginate layer. In conclusion, we found that various membrane layers could control the release amount of nifedipine.
