  • This work presents the buckling investigation of embedded orthotropic nanoplates such as graphene by employing a new refined plate theory and nonlocal small-scale effects. The elastic foundation is modeled as two-parameter Pasternak foundation. The proposed two-variable refined plate theory takes account of transverse shear influences and parabolic variation of the transverse shear strains within the thickness of the plate by introducing undetermined integral terms, hence it is unnecessary to use shear correction factors. Nonlocal governing equations for the single layered graphene sheet are obtained from the principle of virtual displacements. The proposed theory is compared with other plate theories. Analytical solutions for buckling loads are obtained for single-layered graphene sheets with isotropic and orthotropic properties. The results presented in this study may provide useful guidance for design of orthotropic graphene based nanodevices that make use of the buckling properties of orthotropic nanoplates.

  • This paper presents the results of an elastic buckling analysis of isosceles trapezoidal orthotropic plate. In this study, all edges of plate are assumed to be simply supported and the difference of the applied loads are assumed to be taken out by shear of constant intensity along the sloping sides. For the buckling analysis, collocation method is employed. Finite element analysis is also conducted and the results are compared with theoretical ones.

  • This paper presents a methodology to detect and locate damages and faults in orthotropic plate structures. A specific damage index based on dynamic mode shapes of the damaged and undamaged structures has been introduced. The governing differential equation on transverse deformation, the transverse shear force equations and the invariant expression for the sum of transverse loading of an orthotropic plate are employed to obtain the aforementioned damage indices. The validity of the proposed methodology for isotropic and orthotropic damage states is demonstrated using a numerical example. It is shown that the algorithm is able to detect damages for both isotropic and orthotropic damage states acceptably.

  • Revisited in this paper are Green's functions for unit concentrated forces in an infinite orthotropic Kirchhoff plate. Instead of obtaining Green's functions expressed in explicit forms in terms of Barnett-Lothe tensors and their associated tensors in cylindrical or dual coordinates systems, presented here are Green's functions expressed in two quasi-harmonic functions in a Cartesian coordinates system. These functions could be applied to thin plate problems regardless of whether the plate is homogeneous or inhomogeneous in the thickness direction. With a composite variable defined as $z=x_1+ipx_2$ which is adopted under the necessity of expressing the Green's functions in terms of two quasi-harmonic functions in a Cartesian coordinates system Stroh-like formalism for orthotropic Kirchhoffplates is evolved. Using some identities of logarithmic and arctangent functions given in this paper, the Green's functions are presented in terms of two quasi-harmonic functions. These forms of Green's functions are favorable to obtain the Newtonian potentials associated with defect problems. Thus, the defects in the orthotropic plate may be easily analyzed by way of the Green's function method.

  • The paper studies the fluid flow profile contained between the orthotropic plate and rigid wall under the action of the moving load on the plate and main attention is focused on the fluid velocity profile in the load moving direction. It is assumed that the plate material is orthotropic one and the fluid is viscous and barotropic compressible. The plane-strain state in the plate and the plane flow of the fluid is considered. The motion of the plate is described by utilizing the exact equations of elastodynamics for anisotropic bodies, however, the flow of the fluid by utilizing the linearized Navier-Stokes equations. For the solution of the corresponding boundary value problem, the moving coordinate system associated with the moving load is introduced, after which the exponential Fourier transformation is employed with respect to the coordinate which indicates the distance of the material points from the moving load. The exact analytical expressions for the Fourier transforms of the sought values are obtained, the originals of which are determined numerically. Presented numerical results and their analyses are focused on the question of how the moving load acting on the face plane of the plate which is not in the contact with the fluid can cause the fluid flow and what type profile has this flow along the thickness direction of the strip filled by the fluid and, finally, how this profile changes ahead and behind with the distance of the moving load.

  • The stress analysis of two-orthotropic layer, adhesively bonded structures is considered. An orthotropic plate has a through-crack of finite length and is adhesively bounded by a sound orthotropic plate. The problem is resuced to a pair of Fredholm integral equations ofthe second kind. Using a numerical integration scheme to evaluate the intgrals, The integral equations are reduced to a system of algebraic equations. By solving these equations some numerical results for stress intensity factors are presented for various crack lengths.

  • In this paper, the static characteristics of the trapezoidal corrugated plate under uniformly distributed pressure are investigated by the analytical method. Because the corrugated plate is very flexible in the corrugation direction and stiff in the transverse direction, the corrugated plate is treated as the orthotropic plate. This equivalent orthotropic plate must include both the extensional and flexural effect to obtain the precise solution. The effective extensional and flexural stiffness of the trapezoidal corrugated plate are derived to consider these effects in the analysis. To demonstrate the validity of the proposed approach, the comparison is made with the previously published results. Some numerical results are presented to check the effect of the geometric properties.

  • In this paper, the modified method of orthotropic rigidities for stiffened plates with open ribs is proposed to solve the problem of the inaccurate results of the orthotropic plate analysis according to the dimensions of stiffened plates. In analyzing various types of stiffened plates with open ribs using the isotropic and orthotropic plate element, orthotropic plates are found to gave smaller maximum displacements compared to isotropic plates in a range that is smaller than the special rigidity ratio and reversely. Therefore, obtaining a more accurate solution of the orthotropic plate analysis requires modifying the orthotropic rigidities of stiffened plates according to the rigidity ratio. This study presents two modified methods using the displacement function and the displacement ratio. The application of the two methods improves the accuracy of the results of the orthotropic plate analysis, although the modified method using the displacement ratio is better than the method using the displacement function in terms of serviceability and safety. The comparison with the experimental example shows that the proposed modified method improves accuracy. Therefore, the orthotropic plate analysis of stiffened plates with open ribs can achieve more accurate results using the proposed method in this study.

  • Two-way concrete slab is often modeled as an orthotropic plate. In the modeling, flexural rigidities of the slab which depend upon the re-bar quantity have to be taken into account. Elastic equivalence technique in which the equilibrium and compatibility of the cross-section of slab satisfied is utilized to determine th flexural rigidities. In the analysis Navier's method is applied on the concrete slab with all edges simply supported under inform lateral load. In addition to the analysis using orthotropic plate theory, finite element method is also adopted to suggest the finite element modeling and to investigate the applicability of the method. Results obtained by both methods were compared and it is observed that the difference of the results was increased as the ratio of re-bar quantity increased.

  • In this study, an exact solution of governing differential equation for the bending problem of partially loaded orthotropic rectangular plates is presented and also its computer program is developed. The method requires that two opposite edges be clamped or simply supported, or one edge clamped and the other simply supported. Any combination of boundary conditions could exist along the other edges. The plate could he subjected to uniform, partially uniform, and line loads. The solution for the deflection of rectangular plate is expressed as a Levy type single Fourier series and the loads arc expressed as a corresponding series. The advantage of the solution is that it overcomes the limitations of the previous Navier's and Levy's methods (limitation of boundary condition and loading conditions of plate), it is easy to program on a computer and it becomes fast to solve the bending problem with computer program. Calculations are presented for isotropic and orthotropic plates with different loading and boundary conditions. Comparisons are made for the isotropic plate with various boundary conditions between the result of this paper and the result of Navier, Levy and Szilard. The deflections were in excellent agreement.
