  • Yellowing disease of palms caused by phytoplasma is spreading in the Arabian Gulf region. Surveys were conducted to determine the occurrence of the disease. Electron and fluorescence microscopy, and polymerase chain reaction (PCR) techniques were used to detect the phytoplasma associated with the yellowing disease of ornamental palm Washingtonia sp. grown in Kuwait. An accumulation of phytoplasmal DNA was observed by fluorescence microscopy in phloem tissues of diseased palms. Electron microscopy showed that phytoplasma cells were primarily confined to the phloemsieve elements of tissue samples collected from infected mature palms in the field. The pathogen was identified on the basis of molecular analysis using universal and specific nested primers in PCR amplifications. Prokaryotic 16S rDNA gene was detected in amplified PCR products. Nested PCR resulted in DNA amplification of 1.2 kbp fragment. This is the first report of a phytoplasmal rDNA gene identified from the putative causal pathogen of yellows in ornamental palms in the Arabian Gulf region.

  • A computer-based diagnosing system for diseases of grasses, ornamental plant and fruit trees was developed using a 16 bit personal computer (Model Acer 900) and BASIC was used as a programing language. the developed advisory system was named as Korean Plant Disease Advisory System (KOPDAS). The diagraming system files were composed of a system operation file and several database files. The knowledge-base files are composed of text files, code files and implement program files. The knowledge-base of text files are composed of 79 files of grasses diseases, 122 files of ornamental plant diseases and 67 files of fruit tree diseases. The information of each text file include disease names, causal agents, diseased parts, symptoms, morphological characteristics of causal organisms and control methods for the diagnosing of crop diseases.

  • This paper was conducted to acquire the scientific data for the waste landfill greening. The native plant flora was investigated in waste landfill at Nanjido. As a result, total 40 species, 22 families, 32 genus were classified. The dominant species were Robinia pseudoacacia (15%), Populus euramericana (3%), and Populus monilifera (1%), ect. Naive plant of 6 species (Zoysia japonica, Aster koraiensis, Liriope platyphylla, Hemerocallis fulva, Sedum kantschaticum, Indigofera pseudotinctoria) were planted in waste landfill in one species per 1 $m^2$ for greening purpose. After One year planting, the ornamental optimum value was showed in Zoysia japonica, Aster koraiensis, Hemerocallis fulva, Hemerocallis fulva, Sedum kantschaticum. The covering rate after nine months planting was 85% and 80% for Zoysia japonica and Hemerocallis fulva, respectively. While Aster koraiensis(a) 13 %, Liriope platyphylla 8 % and Sedum kantschaticum appeared 22 % were obtained. Aster koraiensis (a) has highest height and Sedum kantschaticum was the shortest plant.

  • Leatherleaf fern (Rumohra adiantiformis) is an important ornamental plant in Indonesia and global. Green fern leaves with bold dark green color with long shelf-life, attract florists as decoration. Indonesia is one important leatherleaf fern exporters, however currently an outbreak of leaf blight decreased production significantly. Initial symptom was reddish brown spots from edge of leaf, which was gradually followed by dark-brown necrotic lesions causing leaf blight and dried. This is a study to do Koch-Postulate approach and molecular identification, to identify the pathogen of the "new emerging disease" reported. Based on multigene analysis using primers from ITS, β-tub and tef1-α gene markers, the pathogen was identified as Neopestalotiopsis sp. All sequences have been deposited in GenBank with accession number of OR905551 (ITS), OR899817 (ßtubulin) and OR899816 (TEF). This Neopestalotiopsis leaf blight causes an emerging concern in leatherleaf fern in Indonesia and global biosecurity because it infected an export commodity.

  • Various antibiotics, that could induce the appearance of resistant microorganisms, have been used for treatment or prevention of bacterial diseases in marine and ornamental fish. We determined and characterized the level of antibiotic-resistant bacteria and proportion of multi-drug resistant bacteria in intestinal microflora of both marine fish cultured in Korea and imported ornamental freshwater fish. For this the bacterial species and resistance to antibiotics were investigated in intestine of rock bream Oplegnathus fasciatus cultured in Korea and pearl gourami Trichogaster leeri imported from Singapore to characterise. Although the bacterial species were different, proportions of resistant bacteria to single antibiotics or multi-drug were higher in intestinal microflora of pearl gourami Trichogaster leeri imported from Singapore than in rock bream Oplegnathus fasciatus cultured in Korea. These results indicate that various antibiotics have been being used before trading without measures in the market of asian ornamental fishes, providing high risks for the emergence of multi-drug resistant bacteria.

  • Since 1993, a total of 50 problematic plant diseases unrecorded in Korea were surveyed in Gyeongnam province. Totally 34 new host plants to corresponding pathogens investigated in this study were 5 fruit trees, 9 vegetables, 12 ornamental plants, 3 industrial crops, and 5 medicinal plants. Among the newly recorded fruit tree diseases, fruit rot of pomegranate caused by Coniella granati and Rhizopus soft rot of peach caused by Rhizopus nigricans damaged severely showing 65.5% and 82.4% infection rate. Among the vegetable diseases, corynespora leaf spot of pepper caused by Corynespora cassiicola and the crown gall of pepper caused by Agrobacterium tumefaciens, powdery mildew of tomato caused by Oidiopsis taurica were the most severe revealing 47.6%, 84.7%, and 54.5% infection rate in heavily infected fields, respectively. In ornamental plants, collar rot of lily caused by Sclerotium rolfsii, gray mold of primula caused by Botrytis cinerea, soot leaf blight of dendrobium caused by Pseudocercospora dendrobium, sclerotinia rot of obedient plant caused by Sclerotinia sclerotiorum showed 32.7 to 64.8% disease incidence. On three industrial plants such as sword bean, broad bean, and cowpea, eight diseases were firstly found in this study. Among the diseases occurring on broad bean, rust caused by Uromyces viciae-fabae and red spot caused by Botrytis fabae were the major limiting factor for the cultivation of the plant showing over 64% infection rate in fields. In medicinal plants, anthracnose of safflower caused by Collectotrichum acutatum was considered the most severe disease on the plant and followed by collar rot caused by Sclerotium rolfsii.(중략)

  • Daphne genkwa (Thymelaeaceae) is a small deciduous shrub widely cultivated as an ornamental. The complete chloroplast genome of this species is presented here. The genome is 132,741 bp long and has four subregions: 85,668 bp of large single-copy and 28,365 bp of small single-copy regions are separated by 9,354 bp of inverted repeat regions with 107 genes (71 protein-coding genes, four rRNAs, and 31 tRNAs) and one pseudogene. The phylogenetic tree shows that D. genkwa is nested within Wikstroemia and is not closely related to other species of Daphne, suggesting that it should be recognized as a species of Wikstroemia.
