  • Broussonetia × kazinoki Siebold has long been utilized as a major component in the manufacturing of Korean traditional paper, hanji, and has been suggested as a hybrid species of B. papyrifera and B. monoica. By applying three molecular markers, chloroplast (cp) ndhF-rpl32 IGS, a nuclear ribosomal internal transcribed spacer, and the TOPO6 gene, the hybrid origin of B. × kazinoki is tested. As a result, B. × kazinoki in Korea is demonstrated to be a hybrid of B. monoica × B. papyrifera, most likely formed naturally in Korea. The cp haplotypes detected provided information about the origins and genetic diversity of the maternal lineage B. monoica and paternal lineage B. papyrifera. The two nuclear markers were supplemented to each other, leading to the discovery of introgression in Broussonetia.

  • Korean folk medicine 'Jil-Kyung-Ee' has been used to cure female disease, acute gastritis, edema, abdominal pain and pleurisy. The botanical origin of the crude drug has not been confirmed pharmocognostically. To clarify the botanical origin of 'Jil-Kyung-Ee', the morphological and anatomical characteristics of the leaves and roots of Plantago species growing in Korea, i.e. P. asiatica L., P. camtschatica Cham., P. depressa Willd., P. lanceolata L., P. major L. var. japonica (Fr. et Sav.) Miyabe were compared. As a result, it was determined that 'Jil-Kyung-Ee' was the whole plant body of Plantago asiatica and Plantago camtschatica.

  • Chinese crude drug "Lu-ti-cao"(鹿蹄草) has been used as a remedy for beriberi, cut bleeding, snake bite, etc. In Korea, the drug is called "Nok Je Cho" and has been used as a folk medicine of the same effect as that of Chinese equivalent. The original plant of this drug has not yet been as certained. To clarify the botanical origin of "Nok Je Cho", the morphological and anatomical characteristics of the leaves of Pyrola species growing in Korea, i.e. P. incarnata, P. japonica, P. minor, P. renifolia, P. secunda were studied. As a result, it was clarified that "Nok Je Cho" was the leaf of Pyrola japonica and Pyrola minor.

  • Korean folk medicine 'O-I-Pul' has been used to cure arthritis, neuralgia, leucorrhea, snake-bite, vomiting and diarrhea. With regard to the botanical origin of O-I-Pul, it has been considered to be Sanguisorba species of Rosaceae, but there has no pharmacognostical confirmation on it. Morphological and anatomical examination of Sanguisorba leaves show that 'O-I-Pul' was the leaves of S. Officinalis and S. tenuifolia var. alba.

  • Historically, one of the most famous and endless controversies in science and science education is on the origin of life. Since 1859, when the 1st edition of 'On The Origin Of Species' written by Charles Darwin had been published in London. evolutionism had the support of the public and scholars Creationists. however, argue recently that the scientific creationism is supported by the vast geological, biological, palaeontological biochemical and even astronomical evidences. Strong arguments of creationists stirred up the sharpening critiques of evolutionists. In this paper. the author summarizes three recent evolutionary critiques on creationism and refutes them from creationist view. After examing the critiques. we find that they are not based on the decisive evolutionary evidences but considerable conjectures And we show that the majority of critiques stem from the lack of communication in the academic communities.

  • Korean folk medicine 'Jeob Gol Mog' has been used to cure nephritis, hypoacidity rheumatis, gastrectasis, and fracture of bone. With regard to the botanical origin of 'Jeob Gol Mog', it has been considered to be Sambucus species of Caprifoliaceae, but there has no pharmacognostical confirmation on it. Morphological and anatomical examination of Sambucus stem show that 'Jeob Gol Mog' was the stem of Sambucus sieboldiana var. miquelii and S. williamsii var. coreana.

  • Complex organic molecules (COMs) are commonly detected in star forming regions and considered important species since they are seeds of prebiotic molecules. Although COMs form in ice mantles on dust grains, they are preferentially detected in the gas phase. The origin of the gaseous COMs highly depends on the circumstance of each star forming region. Therefore, the distribution of COMs emission reflects the physical and chemical conditions of the region. We present the newly detected COMs, especially methanol emission lines toward two massive star forming regions, G19.61-0.23 and G75.78+0.34 in the Atacama Large Millimeter/submillimeter Array Band 3 observations during the Cycle 2 phase. Multiple transitions of methanol are detected in both regions but show different emission morphology. The origin of the desorption (e.g. shocks or high energy photons) is discussed.

  • Aconites distribute widely in northern hemispere of the earth reaching to arctic zone from warm and temperate one. Hitherto, these tuberous roots, 'Cho O', have been known to be famous plant poisons and essential important drugs possessing many remedial effects in each region of the world, especially in Korea and China. In Korea, although these plants grow widely in whole districts, their classifications are quite obscure. Especially, Aconitum triphyllum $N_{AKAI}$ is distributed whole districts. To clarify the botanical origin of 'Cho O', we studied on the anatomical characteristics of Aconitum triphyllum $N_{AKAI}$ growing wild in Korea. As a result, the environmental varieties of A. triphyllum $N_{AKAI}$ were recognized.
