Objectives : Sik-bang-pung (植防風, Peucedani Japonici Radix), the root of Peucedanum japonicum Thunberg (Apiaceae), has often been used as a substitute for Bang-pung (防風, Saposhnikoviae Radix) in the past, but recently it is treated as a counterfeit of Bang-pung or a kind of 'Jeonho (Peucedani Radix)'. Hence, it is crucial to investigate the origin of herbal name to provide appropriate usage of Sik-bang-pung. Methods : The classic and contemporary literatures regarding to the herbal medicines and botanical nomenclature were searched to find the herbal and botanical origins of Bang-pung and Sik-bang-pung, respectively. Result : The botanical descriptions of Bang-pung (防風) were consistent throughout the classic literatures and its botanical species was determined as Saposhnikovia divaricata Schischkin (Apiaceae) in the compendium. In the literatures published in the Joseon Dynasty, 'Byeong-pung-na-mul' was recorded as the medicinal plant of Bang-pung, but its botanical species could not be confirmed. In Japanese literatures, Bang-gyu (防葵) was confirmed as Mok-dan-bang-pung (牡丹防風); botan-bōfū in Japanese), which was determined as the herbal name of the root of 'Gaet-girum-namul (P. japonicum)' in Korea during the period of Japanese rule. The roots of Gaet-girum-namul was medicinally named as Mok-dan-bang-pung (牡丹防風), Sik-bang-pung (植防風), or San-bang-pung (山防風) in the past decades in Korea. Among them, Sik-bang-pung might be chosen as the herbal name, but its nominal origin could not be found. Conclusions : The herbal name, Sik-bang-pung, was presumably affected by Japanese botanical nomenclature. Although its medicinal application is still controversial, Sik-bang-pung should be considered an independent herbal medicine.

Traditional drugs(herbal and animal drugs) of Korea, China and Japan have developed essentially from the same origin, since the traditional medicine of three countries has been originated from ancient China. Due to different geographical locations and discrepancy of plant resources of the traditional drugs, some divergency in terms of systematic botany in traditional drug materials has appeared in the three countries. Present report aims to survey traditional herbal drugs that have been called same traditional names in three countries, but they are actually different with respect to systematic botanical view-point. The official drug compendia(pharmacopoeia and natural drug standards) of three countries were subject to examination. Survey was conducted by the following categories. Traditional drugs were listed under same name, however, 1) they belong to different genus; 7 traditional herbal drugs were listed. 2) they belong to same genus, but different species; 24 traditional herbal drugs were found. 3) a variety of related species are used; 15 traditional drugs were listed. 4) actually same plant, but taxonomical name is differently called and/or different parts of plant are used; 10 traditional drugs were counted. 5) animal drugs belong to one of the above categories; 7 traditional animal drugs were found. Total 63 traditional drugs(herbal and animal) were found to comprise different taxonomical names when the official drug compendia of Korea, China and Japan were examined.

1. "Regulation for about kind of formularies of Korean traditional herbaland preparation method"(Ministry of Health and Welfare No. 1995-15, 95. 3. 15) and "Regulation for review safety and efficacy of drugs. Article 2. 1 Clause 10." should revise "Sasanguihak(四象醫學)" by "Donguisusebowon(東醫壽世保元)" that is the name of book. 2. "Regulation for review safety and efficacy of drugs. Article 2. 1 Clause 10." was defining 'The 11 established formularies of Korean traditional herbal medicine volumes' "Donguisusebowon" that is defined as "The 11 established formularies of Korean traditional herbal medicine volumes" is "Susebowon(壽世保元)" that the Ming period Gong jung-hyun writes. Otherwise, mistake that "Donguisusebowon" of Lee Jema(李濟馬) was recorded 2 times occurs. Therefore, "Susebowon" of "The 11 established formularies of Korean traditional herbal medicine volumes" is that "Susebowon" of the Ming period Gong Jung-hyun writes 3.
