  • We study the relationship of entropy with the properties of molecules and also with the macroscopic specifications of the system, i.e., component and phase. Understanding different viewpoints of classical mechanics and quantum mechanics for the indistinguishability of molecules belonging to the same component, we discuss a few thermodynamic systems in which the properties of molecules are to be consistent with the component as a macroscopic term of classifying the molecules. With a clear definition of thermodynamic microstate, the drawback of the Boltzmann statistics caused by the distinguishability of molecules is avoided, and the Gibbs paradox of entropy consequently disappears. Corresponding to the characteristics of fluid and solid phases, we investigated the effects of the indistinguishability and the symmetry number of molecules and the number of microstates realized in time on the partition function and the entropy. In particular, we show that crystalline solid can be regarded as a system which does not satisfy the ergodic hypothesis.

  • Second-order nonlinear optical(NLO) materials have been extensively studied for applications in photonic devices, such as frequency doubling and electro-optical(EO) modulation, because of their large optical nonlinearity, excellent processibility, low dielectric constant, and high laser damage thresholds. The poling behaviour of NLO chromophore in organic/inorganic matrixes showed the randomization of poled NLO chromophore in the absence of poling Held. The liquid crystal molecules in a droplet showed a long-range orientational order along a director. Therefore, liquid crystal effects on poling behaviour of NLO chromophore dispersed in organically modified inorganic sol-gel materials were investigated. Using sol-gel process for the development of NLO material has received increasing attention, Organically modifked inorganic NLO sol-Eel materials are obtained via incorporation of the organic NLO active chromophore into an alkoxysilane based inorganic network. One of the most important thing in this works was that tetraethoxysilane(TEOS) and methyltrimathoxysilane(HTMS) were used as precursor followed by hydrolysis and condensation without using any acidic catalyst during the process. The NLO chromophores in the liquid crystal nanodomains were well mixed with I/O hybrid matrix, deposited on transparent ITO-coated glasses. The poling behaviour of liquid crystal effects of NLO chromophore dispersed in I/O hybrid matrix were investigated by UV-vis spectroscopy. Size distribution and morphology of the NLO chromophores doped in the liquid crystal nanodomains dispersed in I/O hybrid matrix were investigated by SEM.

  • We have studied orientational characteristics of vertical rift and grain planes developing in 108 quarries for Mesozoic granites. Orientations of these planes vary in different localities. In general, orientations of these planes are predominantly NNE in South Korea. From the regional distribution chart, orientations of these planes show three dominant sets in terms of frequency orders: (1) $N2{\sim}10^{\circ}E(1st-order),\;(2)\;N15{\sim}25^{\circ}E(2nd-order),\;(3)\;N45{\sim}70^{\circ}E,\;N10{\sim}30^{\circ}W\;and\;N70{\sim}80^{\circ}W(3rd-order)$. These granite quarries are classified by the relative difference in the easiness of rock splitting between horizontal and vertical quarrying planes into: R-type, G-type, and H-type. The results showed that quarries for Triassic granites belong to R and G-types;those for Jurassic granites belong to R, G and H-types. In addition, quarries for Cretaceous granites belong mainly to R-type. Among these quarry types, the most diverse type was identified in the quarries for Jurassic granites. R-type (77.8%) shows a higher distribution ratio compared with G and H-types (22.2%). In general, anisotropy of physical properties is found in granitic rocks and there exists close correlation between orientations of granitic rock splitting planes and those of the open microcracks. Meanwhile, it has been reported that preferred orientations of open microcracks suggest maxinum principal stress orientations.

  • An improved 2-D quadrature polar separable (QPS) filter and its applications to texture processing are discussed in thie paper. The frequency response of the filter consists of two independent parts. The first is a radial weighting function based on the prolate spheridal sequence(PSS). The second is the same orientational function of the angle as in the Knutsson filter. The new filter is suboptimal in the energy loss because we let the polar angle function approximate the radial weighting function as in the 2-D Cartesian filter composed of two PSS's. It is easy to control as it depends only upon the design specification of the bandwidth, the drectional agnle, and the central freqneucy. Also the filter is circularly more symmetric in the frequency domain than the Knutsson filter. In order to estimate the orientation and the frequency component of loca textures in the frequency domain, some applications of the new filter, such as the generation of synthetic textures, the estimation of texture orientations, and texture segementations, are discussed.
