The purpose of this study was to determine the reliability and validity of the fear-avoidance beliefs questionnaire (FABQ) in assessing Korean patients with low back pain. We performed translation and cross-cultural adaptation of the questionnaire and enrolled 52 patients (18 males and 34 females) with low back pain. The subjects completed a standardized self-administered questionnaire that included the FABQ assessment along with evaluations for the visual analogue scale (VAS), Oswestry disability index (ODI), self-rating anxiety scale (SAS), and Beck depression inventory-Korean version (K-BDI). The reliability of the obtained data was determined by evaluating the internal consistency on the basis of the intraclass correlation coefficient (ICC) and the Cronbach's alpha values, while the validity of the data was examined by correlating the FABQ scores to the VAS, ODI, SAS, and K-BDI scores. The translated versions of the FABQ showed good test-retest reliability: ICC (3, 1)=.90 (FABQ for physical activity) and .97 (FABQ for work) these values were statistically significant (p<.01). The Cronbach's alpha value for FABQ was .90 (p<.01). FABQ moderately correlated with pain, disability, anxiety, and depression (p<.01). The results of this study indicate that the Korean version of the FABQ is a reliable and valid instrument for measuring fear-avoidance beliefs in Korean patients with low back pain.
Objectives The purpose of this study was to examine the relationship between cold hypersensitivity and bone mineral density. Methods 28 outpatients who visited OO University Oriental Hospital from July 11th, 2013 to August 28th, 2013 were analyzed. Patients were subjected to thermometer, and those with thermal difference greater than 0.3 ℃ between upper arm and palm and also with more than VAS 4 of cold hypersensitivity were diagnosed with cold sensitivity. Lumba spine (L2-4) and heel bone measurement were obtained on dual energy X-ray absorptiometry (DEXA) and Quantitative Computed Tomography (QCT). Results 1. There was statistically significant correlation between T-score of DEXA and body weight (0.522), BMI (0.643), OSTA (Osteoporosis elf-assesment Tool for Asians, 0.579), BMI, T-score and Z-score of QCT. OSTA and T-score of QCT (0.521) also had statistically significance. 2. There was no statistically significant correlation between body fat, abdominal obesity rate, degree of cold hypersensitivity, upper arm and palm's temperature difference, palm temperature, height and Z-score, T-score of QCT or T-sore of DEXA. Conclusions Bone mineral density was lower in women who had cold hypersensitivity of hand and feet. But there was no statistically significant correlation between bone mineral density and degree of cold hypersensitivity, upper arm and palm’s temperature difference.

The clinical data and thermographic imaging were analyzed on the 38 cases of Bell's palsy who were treated admission in the Oriental Medicine Hospital of Wonkwang University from January 2002 to May 2003. 38 patients with Bell's palsy were within one week after the onset of the paralysis, and thermal type in the DITI were hypo or hyper generally. Nerve conduction test(ENOG and EMG) examined in two weeks after onset. We studied interaction effect between thermal type and paralysis grade on admission day. We studied each main effect ; paralysis grade on admission day - nerve conduction test, nerve conduction test - thermal type, thermal type - paralysis grade after 4 weeks, paralysis grade on admission day - paralysis grade after 4 weeks, sasang constitution - nerve conduction test. The following results were obtained that interaction effect between thermal type and paralysis grade on admission day showed no significance, each main effect ; paralysis grade on admission day - nerve conduction test, paralysis grade on admission day - paralysis grade after 4 weeks, showed significance, each main effect ; nerve conduction test - thermal type, thermal type - paralysis grade after 4 weeks, sasang constitution - nerve conduction test, showed no significance.
This study was conducted for the purpose of finding out an objective classification method for Sasang Constitutional medicine, which divides people into 4 groups of constitution and presents comprehensively physiology, pathology, diagnosis, therapy and recuperation regarding each constitution. Questionnaire of Sasang Constitution Classification(I) was administered to 328 inpatients at Kyung Hee Oriental Medicine Hospital. Data was collected during 10 months from June 1994 to Mar. 11, 1995. For the purposes of this study, the collected data was analyzed by crosstabs, variation analysis, and discrimination analysis. The analyzing program was SPSS PC+V4.0. For the purposes of this study, the collected data was analyzed by crosstabs, cariation analysis, and discrimination analysis. The analyzing program was SPSS PC+V4.0. The results were as follows : 1. There was significant differences of each group scales through variation analysis. The questions of each group had Sasang constitutional diagnostic discrimination abilities 2. The diagnostic discrimination abilities(Hit-ratio=56.10%) of the Questionnaire for Sasang Constitution Classification(I) were found to have over 20% improvement than the propotional chance criteria(33.3%), Especially, Hit-ratio for $So{\breve{u}}m$-In(63%) was higher than that of SoYang-In(55%) and $Ta{\breve{e}}um$-In(56.3%). 3. Through discrimination analysis on good questions of each group, the diagnostic discrimination abilities of the Questionnaire for Sasang Constitution Classification(I) was 57.93%. 4. This would be on the ground that the Questionnaire for Sasang Constitution Classification(I) could be used as a tool for Sasang constitution classification.
Background: Panax ginseng root is used in traditional oriental medicine for human health. Its main active components such as saponins and polysaccharides have been widely evaluated for treating diseases, but secondary active components such as oligosaccharides have been rarely studied. This study aimed to assess the impact of water-soluble ginseng oligosaccharides (WGOS), which were isolated from the warm-water extract of Panax ginseng root, on scopolamine-induced cognitive impairment in mice and its antineuroinflammatory mechanisms. Methods: We investigated the impact of WGOS on scopolamine-induced cognitive impairment in mice by using Morris water maze and novel object recognition task. We also analyzed the impact of WGOS on scopolamine-induced inflammatory response (e.g., the hyperexpression of proinflammatory cytokines IL-$1{\beta}$ and IL-6 and astrocyte activation) by quantitative real-time polymerase chain reaction and glial fibrillary acid protein (GFAP) immunohistochemical staining. Results: WGOS pretreatment protected against scopolamine-induced learning and memory deficits in the Morris water maze and in the novel object recognition task. Furthermore, WGOS pretreatment downregulated scopolamine-induced hyperexpression of proinflammatory cytokines interleukin (IL)-$1{\beta}$ and IL-6 mRNA and astrocyte activation in the hippocampus. These results indicate that WGOS can protect against scopolamine-induced alterations in learning and memory and inflammatory response. Conclusion: Our data suggest that WGOS may be beneficial as a medicine or functional food supplement to treat disorders with cognitive deficits and increased inflammation.

Narcotic drugs generally refer to serious and habitual hidden rash such as opium, heroin, methyphetamin, nabinol, cocaine, and so forth. At present, narcotic drugs are spread unchecked and are causing a big social problem. So many countries and narcotists are making every effort to set up a barricade against narcotic drugs. And there is a limit suitable treatment for them. Thus Tuo Yin Tang hang is developed. As indicated by Chinese letters, Tuo yin Tang Jiang(TYTJ) is a crude drug. It is a traditional chinese medicine developed by the study done from lune in 1998 to lune in 1999 that Hubeisheng was entrusted with by People's Republic of China. This study is a treatise on etiology and syntomatology or narcotism. TYTJ is a medicine which is in accord with Pharmacopeia of the People's Republic of China in order to remove from the body the toxic materials resulting from narcotic drugs such as opium and heroin. According to the standard diagnosis on narcotism, 105 cases are studied and treated at the Rehabilitation Center attached to Enshi Autonomous Region Hospital in Hubeisheng. 105 cases are divided into 2 groups by double-blind method. One is the experimental group which has 56 cases. The other is the control group which has 49 ones. 13 cases among 105 cases are addicted by intravenously injections. 9 cases are by oral takings. It took 10 days for this experiment to be performed. Two groups didn't show a striking individual variation based on the age, gender, period of taking drugs, withdrawal symptoms, complication, and state of health. The experimental group had a higher effect of treatment than the control group had. TYTJ treats diseases effectively and has no side effect, irrespective of the serious or slight addiction to opium and morphine.
1. Objecrives Although Lee Je-Ma emphasized it is important to be aware of our own Nature & Emotion(性情) and control them properly, there is few case report about Taeyangin focused on their psychological sides. This report is about a Taeyangin patient who had Hae Yuk and Yul Gyuk syndrome caused by her stress from the work place and relationship with her seniors 2. Methods We observed the female patient had hospitalized in the Oriental Hospital of Dongguk University more than twice has been followed up for the last one year. We prescripted Mi-hoo-teung-shik-chang Tang as her physical symptom. The improvement of her physical conditions were checked through her sleep, meal, menstruation, stool and urine. And MMPI has been tested three times for the last one year to analyze her psychological progress. 3. Results and Conclusions Working in a group can cause hard stress for Taeyangin who is not good at adjusting themselves to whatever environment they are in. Mi-hoo-teung-shik-chang Tang could improve Taeyangin's physical conditions such as Hae Yuk, Yul Gyuk, insomnia, nausea, anorexia and hypouresis. But as her psychological aspect, she was getting more anxious, depressed and avoiding contact with others due to the stress. It is necessary to rake care of patients' psychological sides as well as physical conditions through managing their Nature & Emotion(性情).
Objective : The purpose of this study was to verify the effect of pressing at Kyeun-Jung$(G_{21})$, Gok-Ji$(LI_{11})$ and Zok-Sam-Li$(S_{36})$ with Si-acupuncture on the decreasing of blood pressure and headache on the stroke patients. Methods : This study was one-group pretest-posttest experimental design. The subjects of this study were 30 patients who were hospitalized in stroke center of hospital located in Ulsan from September 27, to November 12, 2004. They had over 160/90mmHg blood pressure but didn't take any hypotensive drugs. The instruments were the Si-acupuncture. the blood pressure and headache scale using Visual Analogue Scale(VAS). Results : 1. With administration of Si-acupuncture, the blood pressure intensity decreased statistical significantly(systolic blood pressure: t=13.310, p=0.000, diastolic blood pressure: t=11.788, p=0.000). After 30 minutes with administration of Si-acupuncture, the blood pressure intensity decreased statistical significantly(systolic blood pressure: t=15.130, p=0.000, diastolic blood pressure: t=12.479, p=0.000). 2. With administration of Si-acupuncture, the headache intensity not decreased statistical significantly'(t=0.372, p=0.712). After 30 minutes with administration of Si-acupuncture, the headache intensity decreased statistical significantly'(t=7.370, p=0.000) Conclusion : According to above, it was verified that the pressing at Kyeun-Jung, Gok-Ji and Zok-Sam-Li with Si-acupuncture was effective in decreasing of blood pressure and headache on the stroke patients.
Background : We aimed to determine the effect of a mental practice on the electromyography (EMG) activity of the quadriceps femoris muscle of the affected side in a hemiplegic patient during sit-to-stand and stand-to-sit tasks. Methods : We recruited a male patient who had suffered from right hemiplegia. A single-subject experimental A-B-A design was used. The reliability of visual analysis, which was primarily employed in this study design, was supported by using the "2- standard-deviation band" method. The target motions consisted of two activities: sit-to-stand and stand-to-sit. The EMG measurements of the quadriceps femoris muscles of the affected and unaffected sides were made in 8 sessions in the baseline (A), mental-practice (B), and follow-up (A) phases. During the mental practice phase, the 10-min mental practice was performed, and the mental practice was withdrawn in the follow-up phase in order to identify the carry-over effects of the treatment. Data was calculated as the percentage of the ratio of the quadriceps EMG activity values of the affected side on unaffected side. Result : The percentage EMG-activity ratio showed a greater increase in the mental-practice phase than in the baseline, and it was maintained during the follow-up phase. Most of the data points in the mental-practice and follow-up phases were positioned above the "2-standard-deviation band." Conclusion : These findings suggest that mental practice can be used to improve the physical function of hemiplegic patients.
Background: Salvia miltiorrhiza (SM), a traditional oriental medicine, has been reported to have anti-tumor properties, but its exact mechanism remains to be elucidated. In this study, we investigated several of the molecular events that occur in human breast carcinoma MCF-7 cells and human pulmonary adenocarcinoma A549 cells. Methods: For this purpose, we evaluated the growth-inhibitory effect of SM in association with the expressions of p53, p21, cyclin D1, and pRb, which are known to be involved in cell cycle arrest. The extent of thymidine incorporation was also examined to assess G1/S phase cell cycle arrest in both cells by $^3H$-thymidine incorporation. Results: Our results show that SM inhibits the growth and the proliferation of MCF-7 and A549 cells. Furthermore, we also observed increased expression of p21 via a p53-dependent pathway in both cell lines after treating with SM. In addition, treatment with SM for 24 hours caused the suppression of hyperphosphorylated retinoblastoma protein (pRb) expression and the dephosphorylation of pRb. Conclusion: These findings suggest that the growth inhibitory and the anti-proliferation effects of SM on MCF-7 cells and A549 cells are mediated via the decreased expression and dephosphorylation of pRB by p21 up-regulation in a p53-dependent manner. To the best of our knowledge, this study is the first to report upon the molecular mechanisms involved in SM-induced tumor cell growth inhibition.
