  • Shikryochanyo written by Jeon Soonyi is a text that extracted paragraphs related to food therapy from medical books or materia medica of Korea and China. "Shikryochanyo" treats disease by food instead of herbs(or drugs) and pork is the majority of methods as food therapy in "Shikryochanyo". So there are 25 paragraphs of using pork, in 15 categories out of 45 in "Shikryochanyo". • Owing to improvement of socioeconomic status during recent decades in Korea, incidence of hepatitis A has rapidly decreased, especially among children. However, this status has paradoxically caused a steady increase of adult patients with HAV infection, causing new medical issues associated with aggravated clinical symptoms. The present study reports an adult case of acute viral hepatitis type A treated with oriental medicine. The elevated biochemical findings(AST, ALT, gamma-GTP, bilirubin), physical symptoms (general weakness, nausea, right flank pain, itching sign), and serological makers (anti-HAV IgM and anti-HAV IgG) were normalized within four weeks. Also, sonographic examination showed a normal pattern on an enlarged liver image. This study informed us about the clinical capacity of oriental medicine for adult patients with acute viral hepatitis type A.

  • The 85 books were compiled into Hyangyakjipseongbang(鄕藥集成方) at the period of the king Sejong(世宗). That books were assembled in the late stage of the Korea dynasty(高麗) and the first stage of the Chosun dynasty(朝鮮). It is a great work on medicine and a textbook of native herbs representating independent medicine of the dynasty of Chosun. The original text was written in technical chinese character terms and this was processed with a newly developed text cognizance program which helped decrease the time and energy needed and increase accuracy. We hope that the ground work and experience gained from this process would be analyzed and used for future in computerized information management for medical classic literature.

  • The floristic composition and structure of the Oriental Arbor-viate forest, natural monument no. 1, were investigated in the Daegu city, southeastern Korea. Vegetation stratification have four layers including tree (>5m), subtree (2m-5m), shrub (1m-2m) and herbs (<1m), which occupied 63.8%, 10.7%, 12.1% and 49.4%, respectively. The vegetation of the study area were divided into Artemisia keiskeana - Quercus variabilis and Pyrrosia linearifolia-Thuja orientalis (OAV) communities. Frequency distribution for diameter classes of the Oriental Arbor-vitae population showed a reverse-J shape. The result suggests that the OAV forest of this site might maintains continuously the present state. The annual radial growth of OAV, Pinus densiflora and Quercus variabilis, the dominant species of the present site showed 0.29, 1.01 and 1.28 mm/year, respectively. Competition of OAV with theh other species including P. densiflora and Q. variabilis could influence negatively on the growthand survival of OAV forest in this site.
