  • Objectives : In this study we investigated the antiobese effects of mixed pills of pickled black soybeans with herbs(herbal Chokong pill, hereafter HCKP) in rats fed high-fat diet. It was evaluated by measuring the changes of body weight, adipose tissues weight and lipid profiles in serum. Methods : Black soybeans were pickled in vinegar for 15 days to prepare Chokong, at room temperature. For treatment group, HCKP was prepared, which five kinds of medicinal herbs(Rhynchosia nulubilis, Glycyrrhiza uralensis, Zizyphus vulgaris, Atractylodes macrocephala K, Astragalus membranaceus and Cornus officinalis) were added to dried Chokong. Four groups of male Sprague-Dawley rats were fed different diets during 9 weeks: normal diet containing 5%(w/w) com oil, high-fat diet containing 10%(w/w) lard plus 5%(w/w) corn oil (HF), high-fat diet supplemented with 1%(T1) and 5%(T5) HCKP powder, respectively. Results : The T5 group had markedly lower body weight gain and weights of epididymal adipose tissue when compared with HF group. There were significant differences in visceral adipose tissue weights, serum total cholesterol and triglyceride concentrations between the HF and T5 group. Then, the efficacy of powered HCKP on body weight and lipid profiles change in rats fed high-fat diet were induced dose dependantly. Conclusion : These results suggest that the possibility of HCKP, as an antiobese functional formula, by suppression of body weight gain and improved lipid profiles.

  • Objectives : We tried to establish standards for genuine by discriminating 3 kinds of pollen and spore herbs that are highly to be mixed with each other. Using an scanning electron microscope, we prepare a standard for discriminating external morphological characters of minute herbs, thereby contributing to the stable supply of genuine herbal medicines. Methods : Standard samples were confirmed by literature review on external morphological characteristics of original plants and herbal medicines, and collection and identification of original plants. The herbal medicines on the market were purchased and classified with using naked eye observation and magnifier. Finally, micromorphological identifications were conducted using an scanning electron microscope. Results : 1. Pini Pollen was clearly distinguished by its relatively medium size and a pollen grain with two swollen reticulate sacci at both ends. The verrucate ornamentation on the exine surface of the corpus and a sunken leptoma germ pore may be used as a discrimination criteria. 2. Typhae Pollen was distinguished by its relatively small size and a saccus on the end of a pollen grain. Reticulate ornamentation of exine surface of the corpus, and a slightly clear ulcerate germ pore can be used as a discrimination criteria. 3. Lygodii Spora was distinguished by its relatively large triangular-ovate shape and trichotomous fissure. Verrucate-tuberculate ornamentation of exine surface and trilete aperture could be used as a discrimination criteria. Conclusion : These results indicate that the use of electron microscopy is very effective for discriminating the external morphology of minute herbal medicines.

  • Objectives : This paper intends to shed light on the value of Jejungsinpyeon, which is known to have had a considerable impact on the country's medicine in the later period Joseon Period, and its position in the Joseon history of medicine. To such an end, this paper focuses on how Yakseongga was developed and transformed in the later period Joseon Period through a bibliographical study of it. Methods : (1) To make comparison and analysis of the 303 lines, which the author said he quoted from Wan.bing.hui.chun and Susebowon, with Yakseongga of Jejungsinpyeon to see association between them based on Yakseongga contained in Jejungsinpyeon (2) To make a table concerning the names of the books, their authors, when they were published, how many kinds there are, their formats based on a survey of literature containing Yakseongga published after Jejungsinpyeon. (3) To see influences made by Jejungsinpyeon on books of medicine in the later Joseon Period. Results : It was found that a total of 303 lines had been quoted from Wan bing hui chun and Susebowon and that 83 lines had been newly inserted by the author. As a result of an analysis of Yakseongga of Jejungsinpyeon, Of the 303 lines, 297 were quoted from Susebowon, and only six from Wan bing hui chun. This means that the author of Jejungsinpyeon chiefly used Susebowon as the source of Yakseongga quoted therein. 275 lines, or 76%, of a total of 386 lines of Yakseongga of Jejungsinpyeon, have their Korean names marked. Medicinal herbs marked as Chinese herbs number 83 out of 386. Among the 83 herbs named, one belongs to the part newly inserted by the author, while the remaining 82 are quoted from Yakseongga. Conclusions : It shows the author's intention to make what is contained in Yakseongga localized knowledge and used by the people easily, although Yakseongga was compiled based on quotations from Chinese literature.

  • Objectives : The rapid progress seen in the Chinese medical and pharmaceutical industries since the mid.Ming Dynasty, and the resulting surge in demand for medicinal herbs led to the emergence of dedicated medicinal herb markets. A representative example was the medicinal herb market of Qizhou (today's Anguo) in Hebei Province. This paper examines various factors that contributed to the transformation and growth of Qizhou into and as a major medicinal herb market of China. Methods : Along with the examination of geographical factors, this study attempts to link the development of Qizhou as a center for medicinal herbs trade with legends related to the Medicine Lord Temple (Yao Wang Miao), a local shrine dedicated to the mythical Medicine Kings. Results : The main argument of this study is that although the emergence of Qizhou as China's largest marketplace for medicinal herbs was significantly helped by its proximity to Beijing, a huge source of demand, as well as its convenient location easily accessible from all parts of the country, and the large herbal production from surrounding areas, the single.most important contributing factor was the body of legends attributing to this city a magical healing energy. Conclusions : The example of Qizhou may also suggest that in pre.modern eras, legends related to supernatural healing power, associated to a city or town, were as important contributing factors to its emergence and growth as a dedicated medicinal herb market as its location or ease of access.

  • Natural products used for oriental medicine often come from various geographical sources, after several different distribution channels. Therefore some form of quality control procedure is required to safeguard naturl products for prescriptions purposes. To achieve this, systematic apprroaches such as morphological examination, microscopic analysis of powdered herbs and chemical analysis can be carried out. However, to ensure absolute criteria for quality assurance of natural products, DNA fingerprinting method such as RAPD(Random amplified polymorphism DNA) analysis can be used for authentication of natural products for authenticatin of natural products. In this study, warious oligonucleotide primers will be synthesized for the detection of RAPD markers and also parameters of affecting PCR(Polymerase Chain Reaction) in the detection of RAPD markers of rare and high-priced natural products will be studied with genomic DNA of chosen samples.
