Recent evidence suggests that many Oriental Medicinal prescriptions are effective in cancer patients as a supportive care. Oriental Medicinal herbs have been investigated extensively and are known to have multiple pharmacological effect. These herbs contain a variety of ingredients which may act synergistically to inhibit tumor cell division, to increase tumor cell death (apoptosis), and to increase the proportion of immune cells within tumor. Paljinhangahm-dan (Paljin) has been used to treat for cancer patients in Oriental Medicine for decades. The effects of aqueous extract of Paljin on the induction of apoptotic cell death were investigated in human leukemia cell lines (HL-60, Jurkat, Molt-4 and U937). The viability of leukemia cells was markedly decreased by Paljin in a dose-dependent manner. Paljin induced the apoptotic death of leukemia cells, which was characterized by the ladder-pattern DNA fragmentation, and chromatin condensation of the nuclei. Paljin digested Bid protein but did not affect Bcl-2 protein level and also, induced mitochondrial dysfunction disrupted as shown as the mitochondrial membrane potential. It activated caspase-9 and caspase-3. thereby resulted in cleavage of poly(ADP) ribose polymerase(PARP). These results indicate that Paljin induces apoptosis of human leukemia cells via activation of intrinsic caspase cascades with mitochondrial dysfunction.

The purpose of this thesis is to dedicate to get the objectivity of herbal medicine treatments by choosing herbs likely to work as antifungal agents against Candida albicans which is the causes of Candida vaginitis, making experiments on them and getting the significant results. Each herb's efficacy on control the number of Candida vaginitis is noticed by using Disk Susceptibility test with six herbs medicine and Broth dilution assay of the culture. Cinamon Ramulus, Pulsatillae Radix, Dictamni Radicis Cortex, Paeoniae Radix, Arecae Semen, Artemisiae Capillaries Herba extracts experimented on the efficiency of antifungal activities against Candida albicans by disk susceptibility test. Pulsatillae Radix has the strongest efficiency. In Dictamni Radicis Cortex never appeared antifungal effect on treatment. MIC (minimal inhibition concentration) in vitro antifungal agents of Cinamon Ramulus, Pulsatillae Radix, Paeoniae Radix, Artemisiae Capillaries Herba extracts against Candida albicans was determined by broth dilution assay. MIC against Candida albicans is that Pulsatillae Radix is 2.5 mg/ml and Cinamon Ramulus is 5 mg/ml and Paeoniae Radix is 10 mg/ml and Artemisiae Capillaries Herba is 40 mg/ml.

1. Objectives To evaluate effectiveness of one hundred thirty kinds of pharmacopuncture made of herbs used in Sasang Constitutional Medicine. 2. Methods We searched at fifteen kinds of Korean oriental medical journals websites and four kinds of Korean oriental medicine databases. '약침', '수침', 'pharmacopuncture', 'aqua acupuncture' and 'herbal acupuncture' were keywords. Searching period was March to April 2010. 3. Results One hundred eighty three articles are searched. And these are the results. 1) A lot of Soeum herb pharmacopunctures are effective in anti-tumor, brain damage, rheumatoid arthritis. 2) A lot of Soyang herb pharmacopunctures are effective in kidney injury, asthma, rheumatoid arthritis. 3) A lot of Taeeum herb pharmacopunctures are effective in obesity, asthma, anti-tumor, anti-oxidation, rheumatoid arthritis. 4) Taeyang herb pharmacopunctures are effective in rheumatoid arthritis, amyotrophia. 4. Conclusions There was similar effectiveness between oral administration and pharmacopuncture in Sasang Constitutional herbs. It suggest that pharmacopuncture could be used for Sasang constitutional disease and symptoms. Well-designed clinical studies for Sasang constitutional pharmacopuncture are needed.

An extensive anticancer drug screening from natural resources has been carried out primarily using murine tumor model for past fourty years. Recently a new screening program from NCI, so called disease-oriented screening system. has been estabished to detect anticancer drugs that show selective growth inhibition toward variety of tissue specific human solid tumors originated from leukemia, lung, colon, CNS, melanoma, ovarian, renal, prostate amd breast. To develope the anticancer drugs from oriental medicinal herbs, we investigated the cytotoxic effects against human tumor cell panels with 23 kinds of MeOH extract of medicinal herbs. Evodiae Fructus, Meliae Toosendan Fructus, Saussureae Radix and Pharbitidis Semen showed strong activities against several tumor cell lines.

The effects of extracts from various Oriental medicinal herbs on mast-cell-mediated allergic reactions were investigated in this study. Out of these extracts, the medicinal herb Atractylodis rhizoma alba exhibited the most potent activity in the cells, with $IC_50$ values of $20.5\;{\mu}g/ml$, by DNP-BSA and $33.04\;{\mu}g/ml$, by compound 48/80. Similar to the in vitro activity, Atractylodis rhizoma alba inhibited compound-48/80-induced systemic anaphylaxis by 31.3% at 300 mg/kg in mice. It also suppressed the secretion of $TNF-{\alpha}$, a major pro-inflammatory cytokine in the cells. These results may suggest that Atractylodis rhizoma alba shows anti-allergic activity in compound 48/80-induced anaphylactic mice through the inhibition of mast cells.

The 'Half outside and half inside(半表半裏)' is the part which is located between outside and inside, and it is regarded as the nickname of ShaoYang(少陽) in Sanhanlun(傷寒論). About the meaning of 'Half outside and half inside', many medical scientists agreed that the 'outside' is 'TaiYang(太陽)', but they didn't agreed the meaning of 'inside'. One group insisted the 'inside' is 'YangMing (陽明)', the other group instisted that 'TaiYin(太陰)'. To know which opinion is correct, I analyed the Kwigyung(歸經) of herbs in Soshihotang(小柴胡湯) which has a close relationship with ShaoYang, and it is proved that the Kwigyung of herbs is the Foot ShaoYang-GALL BLADDER Meridian(足少陽膽經), Hand TaiYin-LUNG Meridian(手太陰肺經), and Foot TaiYin-SPLEEN Meridian(足太陰脾經). So I concluded that the 'inside' is not 'YangMing' but 'TaiYin'.

To investigate the documental records of the medi-alcohol theraphy on the Gastrointestinal disease, the 33 kinds of medical books editioned from the old to the present were used. the results were followed Many herbs used on the Gastrointestinal disease were sequently Atractylodis Macrocephalae Rhizoma, Zingiberis Rhizoma, Ginseng Radix. The herbs of invigorating and warming body, regulating the flow of qi etc. were many occupied(used) in treating the Gastrointestinal disease. In analyzing treatment symptom as medi-alcohol theraphy were sequently many used abdominal pain, inappetence, gastrointestinal cancer, indigestion, fatigue, vomiting, diarrhea, abdominal dropsy. The kinds of using medi-alcohol on the Gastrointestinal disease were totally 120 ones.

Low Back Pain Prescriptions of Jin, sa tak are peculiar to using Atractylodis Macrocephalae Rhizoma(AMR). All low back pain prescriptions which are enlisted in Byunjeunggimoon, Byunjeungrok and Byunjeungokham include AMR. Whereas low back pain prescriptions which is enlisted in Seoksilbirok are 7 of 10. Preexistence of low back pain prescriptions are not necessarily used AMR. But Jin, sa tak who lived at Ming and Ching era presented AMR in low back pain treatment. AMR is able to get rid of dampness between the kidney functional area and umbilicus. The results are as follows : It is made much of the malicious dampness which is in the kidney. There are not used cold but warm and eliminating dampness herbs to invigorate kidney. It shows that Jin, sa tak who was a Taoist used invigorating and warming kidney herbs. Atractylodis Macrocephalae Rhizoma is mainly used in treating low back pain from Jin, sa tak. Jin, sa tak shows concrete prognosis to treat a disease.

From the Herbal Prescriptional Study of Bangpungtongsungsan(防風通聖散, BPTS). It can be concluded as follows. 1. The origin of BPTS is the book of sunmyungronbang(宣明論方) in 1172. BPTS' hebal compositons are not changed in history, but it's doses had been changed. When BPTS are written to dongeuibogam(東醫寶鑑) in 1610, that's doses are added 0.75g to each herbs dose according to the korean people's constitution. 2. BPTS are composed of five elemental prescriptions. that are yugilsan(六一散), bakhotang(白虎湯), hoechunyanggyeoksan(回春凉膈散), jowiseunggitang(調胃承氣湯) and saengryosamultang(生料四物湯), and three subsidiary prescriptions and some herbs have collateral effects in BPTS. 3. BPTS can cure some diseases that are cause by fever with wind, heat in gastrointestinal tract, anemia after childbirth, heat that is caused by kidney's disease, hemorrhoids, alcoholic poisoning, contusion and constipation that are caused by intestinal heat. 4. BPTS can cure hypertension, hyperlipidemia and Obesity also.

Objectives : This paper researched methods of washing Herb medicine through research papers of washing Crops Materials and Methods : We collected research papers on Washing crops. Then we analysed them according to washing methods. Results : The following results were obtained in this study. 1. Herbal fruit, wash using a conveyor belt. 2. Leafy herbs, soak in a chlorine solution or ozone solution and rinse it. sometimes using micro bubble system. 3. Radix, wash with high pressure sprinkling water. 4. Cortex, wash under running water by hand washing. Conclusion : Herb medicines need a washing methods for each region. so Herbs should be washed in a suitable methods for each region.
