For the evaluation of immunomodulatory effect of Korean Oldenlandiae Herb (OH) and Radix (OR), our experiment was performed with methanol extracts of Korean Oldenlandiae Herba and Radix. After administration of methanol extracts of Korean OH and OR for 7 days, Balb/C mice were immunized with sheep red blood cells. Four days later, splenic leukocytes were isolated and immunological experiments were performed. Rosette forming cells and plaque forming cells were significantly increased in Korean OH and OR treated mice compared with PBS treated control. Korean OH and OR also enhanced T and B lymphocytes, macrophage and natural killer cells by flowcytometric analysis. LPS-induced TNF-α and IL-6 levels were increased by OH and OR compared with untreated control. These results suggest that Korean OH and OR have immunomodulatory activity through regulation of cell-mediated immune and humoral immune response.

Objective : The purpose of this study was to report the improvement in a patient with edema treated by herb medication based on Shanghanlun provisions. Methods : According to 'A disease pattern identification diagnostic system based on Shanghanlun provisions (DPIDS)', a patient was diagnosed with Taeyang-byung, no. 46 provision and was administered with Mahwang-tang herbal medication for 30 days. The Numeric rating scale (NRS) was used to estimate the response. Results : The NRS score changed from 10 to 1 and the edema disappeared by 46th provision of Mahwang-tang selected according to Shanghanlun provisions. Conclusions : This case report suggests that the two words in the 46th provision of Shanghanlun, '陽氣重, 無汗' (Yang qi heavy, Absence of sweating) indicate a close relationship between photosensitivity and absence of sweating, thereby affecting edema in this case.
Objective : The purpose of this study was to report the improvement of a patient with tinnitus treated by herb-formulae medication based on Shanghanlun provisions. Methods : According to a disease pattern identification diagnostic system based on Shanghanlun provisions, a patient was diagnosed with Taeyang-byung, 40th provision and was administered Socheongryong-tang herbal medication for 45 days. The numeric rating scale (NRS) was used to estimate the response. Results : The NRS score changed from 10 to 0 and the tinnitus disappeared by 40th provision of Socheongryong-tang selected according to Shanghanlun provisions. Conclusions : This case report suggests that the two words in the 40th provision of Shanghanlun, '表不解, 水氣'(exterior do not release, water qi) indicate a close relationship between economic difficulty and stuffiness of being in water, which affect tinnitus in this case.

This study was carried out to investigate the effect of different herb resource powders on meat quality and sensory properties in Korean native black goat for 500 d. The experimental treatment was arranged with 24 heads (3 treatment/8 heads) by control group, T1 and T2 group respectively (Control, not added herb powders; T1, 1% added herb powders; T2, 2% added herb powders). Total weight gain for the Korean native black goat was the highest in T2 group feeding for 500 days, and daily gain tended to be similar to the total weight gain. The total feed intake were the highest as 519.20 kg in T2 group, although feed conversion showed 18.35 in the T2 group, which means it had the best feed efficiency compared to the other treatment groups. The carcass rate was higher in the T1 group (51.10%) than in the other groups (p<0.05). The cooking loss and drip loss of Korean native black goat was the highest as 34.72% and 3.83% in the control group (p<0.05). However, total cholesterol amounts in the treatment group were not significantly different from, although tended to be higher than, the control group (p>0.05). Also, the overall sensory evaluation of the treatment group revealed low scores, meaning more meat flavor than those of the control in tenderness, flavor, texture, and black goat off-flavor and overall evaluation (p<0.05). Total synthesis evaluation was higher for the treatment group (3.71, 3.90 point) than that of the control group (4.82 point) (p<0.05). The MUFA/SFA ratio of the treatment group was not significantly different from, although tended to be higher than, the control group
This is a case report of a patient with conversion disorder treated by Soeumin herb medicine for 7 weeks. We judged the patient to be Soeumin, and diagnosed the case as Hansilgyulhyung. so we treated the patient with Soeumin Juckbaekhaogwanjung-tang and Soeumin Insambaekhaogwanjung-tang. The symptoms of the patients were whole body paralysis(she could not walk), tremor, abdominal dropsy etc, at admission. but the paralysis was improved so the patient could walk with assistant, tremor disappeared, and abdominal dropsy decreased at discharge. We found out that Soeumin Insambaekhaogwanjung-tang is effective for the Soeumin patient with conversion disorder.

Bee Venom aqua-acupuncture (BVA) simultaneously exerts pharmacological effects of biologically active compounds, existed in the whole bee venom, and medicinal effect of the stimulation of acupuncture points. BVA has been considered as a promising therapeutic method for treating various chronic diseases, mainly accompanying severe pain and inflammation. As a painless injection device, jet injectors have been commercially marketed for various clinical applications including insulin injection and vaccination. Among them, a pressure-driven jet injector system could be used for intradermal delivery of a variety of drugs. The aim of this study was to investigate the analgesic effects of the BVA using a needle-free injector (Biojector $2000^{\circledR}$, Bioject Inc., OR, USA), compared to the conventional BV aqua-acupuncture using a typical syringe. Adult Sprague-Dawley rats were injected with bee venom $(0.08mg/kg,\;50{\mu}l)$ using Biojector $2000^{\circledR}$ (BVA-B) or a syringe (BVA-5) into the Zusanli (ST36) acupoint, 30 minutes before plantar injection of 2% formalin. It was found that BVA-B-, or BVA-5-treated rats, compared to controls, exhibited significantly less licking behavior during the late phase in the rat formalin test, when compared to controls. During early phase, however, those effects were not significant but substantial. The analgesic effect of BVA-B was also compatible with that of the conventional BVA-5. In the immunohistochemical studies, BVA-B significantly suppressed the expression of formalin-evoked c-fos, a biomarker of neuronal activity, in the lumbar dorsal horn of the spinal cord. These results indicated that BVA-B waseffective in the modulation of pain in the rat formalin test, compared to BVA-5. Taken together, the needle-free jet injector system could be substituted for the conventional aqua- acupuncture with the advantage of little pain.

This study have a object to found out the effects of oriental herb medicine, Antaeeum, to dams of rats and their offsprings. The Antaeeum was savaged to female Sprague-Dawley rats at a dose of 5 mg/kg/day for 3 weeks during gestation periods. Dams of rat were sacrificed at 20th day of gestation, and were observed major internal and reproductive organs. Approximately live fetuses in the 20th days of gestation were selected randomly and examined with stereo microscopes. Others offsprings were fixed with 95% ethanol for skeletal examinations. The fixed fetuses were stained with alcian blue and alizarin red S to observe skeletal variations or malformations. Maternal body weight of Antaeeum treated dams have a tendency of increasing compared with control dams. There were no significant difference in internal and reproductive organs of weight or findings. The spleenic organ relative weight of treated dams were decreased compared with the control significaltly (p<0.05). There were no significant changes between two groups in blood chemistry and hematological values. There were no significant changes in number of corpus luteum, implantation, live fetuses and implantation rate, delivery rate, late resorption rate and sex ratio. But in the Antaeeum treated group showed lower early resorption rate than that of the control dams. Fetal body weight and number of fetus a dam at Antaeeum treated group were higher than that of control group. The fetuses of dams treated with Antaeeum didn't induced external malformations. Vertebral and sternal variations were observed in Antaeeum group, but compared with the control, those variations were not significant. The ossification numbers of rib, cervical, thoracic, and lumber were normal. Fetuses treated with Antaeeum to the dams showed no significant difference in the number of caudal vertebra (P>0.01). From these results, it can be concluded that Antaeeum showed no toxicity effects on maternal side especially on body weight, early resorption rate, and number of live fetuses. Also there were no significant changes on maternal organ weights except spleen, hematological data, reproductive organs. Although skeletal variations were examined at vertebra and sternum, this Antaeeum could not induced significant choses in bone malformation.
Objectives : This study was conducted to investigate the research trends of herbal medicine prescriptions and herbal medicines with anti-inflammatory effects. Methods : Among the papers published in oriental medicine from 2015 to 2020(1st half), experimental papers to reveal anti-inflammatory effects were collected, and finally 198 papers were selected. The anti-inflammatory effects of each herb were summarized, and were analyzed by year, journal, experimental subjects and experimental types. Results : 1. Of the 198 papers, there were 186 papers proving anti-inflammatory drug efficacy, 6 papers comparing efficacy between drugs, and 6 papers comparing the efficacy of packaging or storage of drugs. 2. The number of anti-inflammatory drug articles published from 2015 to the first half of 2020 was 35(2015), 35(2016), 38(2017), 44(2018), 34(2019), 12(2020). 3. Papers were published in a total of 18 journals, of which 58(29.3%) were published by the Korea Journal of Herbology. 4. There were 101 papers on single herbs(51.0%) and 78(39.4%) papers on combination drugs. 71 types of single herbs were used in a total of 101 papers, of which Cheongyeol was the most common with 28. 5. Of the 198 papers, 87 in vivo papers and 125 in vitro papers were published, and 14 papers were both conducted. In vitro experiments demonstrated the efficacy of anti-inflammatory drugs in various inflammatory indicators such as NO, PGE2, and in vivo experiments demonstrated the efficacy of anti-inflammatory drugs in various inflammatory diseases such as musculoskeletal, digestive, dermal diseases.
The following conclusions were obtained after bibliographic investigation on the therapy of lung cancer by western, oriental, and integrated oriental and western medicine. 1. Lung cancer is classified into small cell lung cancer(SCLC) or non small cell lung cancer(NSCLC) in the treatment by western medicine, and applied with the means of surgery, radiotherapy and chemotherapy alone or combined, depending on the stage and the symptom. 2. Treatment by oriental medicine includes the means of strengthening body resistance to dispel pathogenic factors(扶正祛邪), combined approach of reinforcement and expulsion(攻補兼施), and reinforcing both qi and blood(氣血雙補), depending on the initial, middle, and terminal stage. And also treatment based on differentiation of symptom(辨證施治) is applied according to the type of symptom; deficiency of qi of both lung and spleen(肺脾氣虛), heat symptom of lung by deficiency of yin(肺熱陰虛), stagnation of damp-phlegm and blood(濕痰瘀阻), stagnation of qi and blood(氣血瘀滯), deficiency of both qi and yin(氣陰兩虛). Single or combined herb drug is used according to the symptom. 3. Treatment by integrated oriental and western medicine improved survival rate and quality of life. It promoted recovery and improved survival rate in the patients receiving surgery. Integrated radiotherapy and oriental medicine treatment reduced adverse effect by radiotherapy and improved therapeutic effect and survival rate. Integrated chemotherapy with oriental medicine treatment reduced side effect by chemotherapy and improved quality of life and survival rate. These results suggest that therapy of lung cancer should be applied with integrated oriental and western medicine from diagnosis to treatment for promoting therapeutic effect. And further study on this therapy should be ensued.

OMiYakSung theory consists of various herbs that contain at least one or more of the five flavors. This theory has been used to prevent human diseases and enhance the immune system. The main objective of the present study was to investigate efficacy differences and changes in ingredients of blended and single herb extracts based on OMiYakSung theory. We selected three herbs Coptis japonica Makino, Cimicifuga heracleifolia Komarov, and white Poria cocos and assessed their physiological effect. As results, the blended extracts showed excellent cell migration effect at 400 ug/mL concentration, compared to the single extract. In addition, the blended extracts enhanced immune function by increasing the activity of dendritic cells and showed the highest antioxidant activity by DPPH assay and HPLC-ABTS assay. In this study, we developed a new materials that can be applicable to cosmetics and pharmaceuticals field by applying oriental medicine theory.
