Benign Prostatic Hyperplasia(BPH) is the most common benign tumor seen in the western male, and it is found in 50% of men over 50 years of age. It is characterized by the formation of large discrete lesions in the periurethral region. As they enlarge, these nodules tend to compress the urethra and cause partial or almost complete obstruction of .urine flow. The etiology of BPH is uncertain, but the increasing incidence with advancing age suggests the possibility of an imbalance between male and female sex hormones. In the past, most patients have had multiple indications to support the decision to initiate therapy. But both the urologic surgeon and the patient must be clearly aware of the results that can be expected and the risks involved in achieving them. The aims of this study are to investigate and summarize the current trends of treatment for BPH so as to suggest the effective and available way to treat the disease. In Oriental medicine, the BPH is recognized as uroschesis and ischuria, and the etiology is mainly in stagnated blood and insufficiency of the kidneys. The point of treatment of BPH is recovery of urination, and the treatment can be approached in two ways through herb drugs and acupuncture. Some of the herb drugs have substances which reduce BPB. Acupuncture therapy stimulates the pelvic plexus and is reported to be effective for voiding. Suppository, massotherapy, rectal injection, locus injection and attachment of herb drugs to the navel or the acupoint are announced as the effective treatments. So, this study of the approach and application of these treatments on BPH would be necessary.

This study has been carried out to investigate the treatment and drugs of Hu-Ro(虛勞) by referring to 35 literatures. The results were as follows; 1. The treatment of Hu-Ro(虛勞) is as follows. basic treatment : hujeokboji (虛卽補之) nojaonji sonjaonji (勞者溫之 損者溫之) general treatment : onbo (溫補) - bojungikgiseongyang (補中益氣升陽) chungbo (淸補) - jaeomganghwa (滋陰降火) 2. The drugs of Gi-Su(氣嗽) is as follows. gihu (氣虛) : bojungikgitang (補中益氣湯), sagunjatang (四君子湯) hulhu (血虛) : samultang (四物湯), daebojineum (大補眞飮) yanghu (陽虛) : oogwieum (右歸嗽), jwagihwna (左歸丸) eumhu (陰虛) : yukmihwan (六味丸), jwagihwna (左歸丸) eumyangguhu (陰陽俱虛) : gojineumja (固眞飮子), palmultang (八物湯)

In the result of investigating traditional chinese medical literatures to understand definite immun opharmacologic effects of drugs for clearing away heat and detoxicating such as Oldenlandiae Diffusae Herba, Fel Ursi, Fraxini Cortex, Pulsatillae Radix, Bruceae Fructus, Portulacea Herba, Patriniae Radix, we could reach conclusions as follows: 1. Oldenlandiae Diffusae Herba can increase voracity of leukocytes and immune function of splen ocytes. 2. Fel Ursi, Patriniae Radix can inhibit acute, chronic inflammation by decreasing voracity of macrophages, monocytes and recover lymphocytes. 3. Fraxini Cortex have anti-inflammatory effect then applied to treat with arthritis. Pulsatillae Radix, Bruceae Fructus, Portulacea Herba have anti-cancer, anti-biotic effects. Above results indicates that drugs for clearing away heat immunosuppressive effect that they can apply to all sorts of inflammatory diseases such as arthritis, DTH, SLE, and cancer.

In the result of investigating traditional chinese medical literatures to understand definite immunopharmacologic effects of drugs for clearing away heat and detoxicating such as Sophorae tonkinensis Radix, Houttuyniae Herba, Smilacis glabrae Rhizoma, Belamcandae Rhizoma, Lasiosphaera seu Calvatia, Paridis Rhizoma, Lobeliae chinensis Herba, we could reach conclusions as follows: 1. Sophorae tonkinensis Radix, Houttuyniae Herba can increase voracity of leukocytes and activities of T cells. 2. Sophorae tonkinensis Radix, Smilacis glabrae Rhizoma can inhibit DTH. 3. Sophorae tonkinensis Radix, Houttuyniae Herba increase activities of B cells in low density but decrease activities of B cells in high density. 4. Sophorae tonkinensis Radix, Houttuyniae Herba, Smilacis glabrae Rhizoma, Belamcandae Rhizoma have anti-inflammatory effects. Studies about drugs for clearing away heat and detoxicating is on. but their range is wide and their effects are numerous. Therefore. we think that more deep and wide researches about them shoud be accomplished.

Objectives : The purpose of this study is to analyze the practical implications of homeopathic medicines, their status, their preparation systems and registration rules, recognized by the European Union and other countries. Contents : This paper covers the background of homeopathic medical principle, homeopathy throughout the world, the medicine status and clinical research, increases of the drug potency, the practical regulation of treatment, preparation techniques of homeopathic drugs and registration rules and the clinical practice. Homeopathy has been currently practised in over eighty countries throughout the world, especially in Europe. It had attracted considerable attentions in South and North America (notably in USA, Brazil, and Argentina), India and Pakistan. Although it is not dominantly popular in North America, constant growth has been nevertheless noted. Over the last thirty years, homeopathy has also developed or appeared in South Africa, Tunisia, Morocco, Venezuela, Israel, and Australia, etc. Result & suggestion : As over 300 million patients have put their trust in homeopathy, the study of the integration of homeopathy to oriental medicine, its development and feasibility in Korea are urgently needed. The products, substances, compositions of Homeopathic drugs are very similar to those of oriental medicine theory. Therefore their preparations and applications should prescribed and practised exclusively by oriental doctors. Applying the homeopathic theory and its preparation techniques to oriental medicine, the herbal acupuncture preparation should be modernized and various oriental products are to be developed. To this end, government and herbal acupuncture society need to interact each other for the development of oriental medicine.

Hypertension is one of the modifiable risk factors for stroke and heart disease. Lowering blood pressure is a primary or secondary preventative measure for stroke and heart disease. There are many antihypertension drugs. But these day there comes some side effect of antihypertension drugs. Headache, sexual dysfunction, inertia, dizziness, depression, and so on. So we use Bangpungtongsung -san to stage 1 hypertensive patients. After treatment with Bangpungtongsung-san, patients showed antihypertensive effect and improvement in general condition. The result of this study suggest that Bangpungtongsung-san might be usefully applied for the treatment of hypertension.

An oriental medicinal drugs Jahageo (JHG, Hominis placenta) were examined to determine its effects on the responsiveness of central nervous system neurons after injury. We found that JHG was involved in neurite outgrowth of DRG sensory axons. JHG treatment also increased expression of axonal growth-associated protein GAP-43 in DRG sensory neurons after sciatic nerve injury and in the injured spinal cord. JHG treatment during the spinal cord injury increased induction levels of cell division cycle 2 (Cdc2) protein in DRG as well as in the spinal cord. Histochemical investigation showed that induced Cdc2 in the injured spinal cord was found in non-neuronal cells. These results suggest that JHG regulates activities of non-neuronal cells such as oligodendrocyte and astrocyte in responses to spinal cord injury and protects neuronal responsiveness after axonal damage.

Premature ejaculation is the most common sexual dysfunction seen in the male, and it is found in 30 to 50% adult male population. It is defined as the inability to control the ejaculatory process for a sufficient length of time during intravaginal containment to satisfy his partner in at least fifty percent of his coital connections The majority of men with premature ejaculation have underlying psychologic origin of performance-anxiety type, but it is not always psychogenic and may also be a presenting symptom in certain organic disorders. In oriental medicine, the point of treatment of premature ejaculation is recovery of the good ejaculatory control, and the treatment can be approached in three ways as psychological therapy involving behavioral therapy, herb drugs, and acupuncture. This study has aims to investigate and summarize the current trend of treatment for premature ejaculation so as to suggest the effective and available way to treat the disease.

Inflammation is a disease that continues to afflict large numbers of people and may cause other diseases, for example, rheumatoid arthritis, colon cancer, etc. prostaglandins(PGs), one of arachidonic acid metabolites, are major chemical mediators in the process of inflammation. In traditional herbal medicine, many kinds of herbal drugs have been widely used for the treatment of inflammation. So, we analyzed many publications until 2001 which worked on inhibition of $PGE_2$ synthesis by cyclooxygenase-2 (COX-2) with herbs and herb oriented single compounds. And then we tried to make interpretations of herbal traditional prescriptions for inflammation. There are significant correlations between herbal medicine prescribed and inhibitions of COX-2 activity. From our efforts and further researches, we expect to develop new-inflammatory herbal drugs which have more efficacy and fewer side effects.
