Floral scent emitted from many plants is the key factor for pollinator attraction and defense for survival in nature and is important industrial materials for perfumery as well. It is a complex mixture of various organic molecules with a high volatility or a high vapor pressure. In general, floral scents are divided into three categories, aliphatics, terpenoids, and phenylpropanoids/benzenoids, based on its origin. About 1,700 scent compounds have been identified and their biochemistry and molecular biology also have elucidated their biosynthesis from various flowering plants during the last ten years. In addition to improvement of vase life, flower color and shape, and/or disease resistance, floral scent is coming up to the major breeding target for improvement of marketability. Therefore, metabolic engineering can be an important tool in near future and may be able to facilitate the breeding program for novel cultivar selection and improvement of marketability of floricultural crops.
Gas sensors based on metal oxide semiconductors are used in numerous applications including monitoring indoor air quality and detecting harmful substances like volatile organic compounds. Nanostructures, for example, nanoparticles, nanotubes, nanodomes, and nanofibers have been widely utilized to improve gas sensing properties of metal oxide semiconductors, and this increases the effective surface area, resulting in participation of more target gas molecules in the surface reaction. In the recent times, 1-dimensional (1D) metal oxide nanostructures fabricated using anodic oxidation have attracted great attention due to their high surface-to-volume ratio with large-area uniformity, reproducibility, and capability of synthesis under ambient air and pressure, leading to cost-effectiveness. Here, we provide a brief overview of 1D metal oxide nanostructures fabricated by anodic oxidation and their gas sensing properties. In addition, recent progress on thin film-based anodic oxidation for application in gas sensors is introduced.

A microwave plasma torch at the atmospheric pressure by making use of magnetrons operated at the 2.45 GHz and used in a home microwave oven has been developed. This electrodeless torch can be used to various areas, including industrial, environmental and military applications. Although the microwave plasma torch has many applications, we in the present work focused on the microwave plasma torch operated in pure steam and several applications, which may be used in future and right now. For example, a high-temperature steam microwave plasma torch may have a potential application of the hydrocarbon fuel reforming at one atmospheric pressure. Moreover, the radicals including hydrogen, oxygen and hydroxide molecules are abundantly available in the steam torch, dramatically enhancing the reaction speed. Also, the microwave plasma torch can be used as a high-temperature, large-volume plasma burner by injecting hydrocarbon fuels in gas, liquid, and solid into the plasma flame. Finally, we briefly report treatment of soils contaminated with oils, volatile organic compounds, heavy metals, etc., which is an underway research in our group.
In order to investigate the properties of radiation resistance together with dielectric, and mechanical relaxation behaviors of polyvinylcholoride exposed to several different doses under the .gamma.-ray of Co$^{60}$ source, several observations were carried out on the exposed specimens propared by mixing dibutyl-tin-dilaulate and dibutyl-tin-dimaleate as stabilizer with or without adding dioctyl-phthalate as plasticizer. Conclusions obtained from the study are as follows: The origin of the absorption band at 1,540-1,640$cm^{-1}$ / on I.R. spectrum seems to be RCOO- ion originated from ionization of the stabilizer, and this peak can be useful as a measure of radiation resistance on polyvinylchloride. Addition of increasing plasticizer to polyvinylchloride exhibits increasing radiation resistance and the reason for this result may be attributed to aromatic resonance absorption of radiation energy by diotylphthalate. On dose dependent dielectric characteristics, nonplastized specimen shows a peak at about 10 Mrad and that this peak disappears on the plastification of specimens. Those phenomena may be explainable in considering the statistical distribution of scissored chain molecular segments as well as the plastification process of plasticizer to polyvinylchloride chain molecules.

An experiment to find out the removal mechanism of PEG(polyethyleneglycol) by using UV-enhanced $O_2$ GPC (gas phase cleaning) at low substrate temperature below $200^{\circ}C$ was executed under various process conditions, such as substrate temperature, UV exposure, and $O_2$ gas. The possibility of using $UV/O_2$ GPC as a low-temperature in-situ cleaning tool for organic removal was confirmed by the removal of a PEG film with a thickness of about 200 nm within 150 sec at a substrate temperature of $200^{\circ}C$. Synergistic effects by combining photo-dissociation and photo oxidation can only remove the entire PEG film without residues within experimental splits. In $UV/O_2$ GPC with substrate temperatures higher than the glass transition temperature, the substantial increase in the PEG removal rate can be explained by surface-wave formation. The photo-dissociation of PEG film by UV exposure results in the formation of end aldehyde by dissociation of back-bone chain and direct decomposition of light molecules. The role of oxygen is forming peroxide radicals and/or terminating the dis-proportionation reaction by forming peroxide.

In the Langmuir-Blodgett (LB) technique, a monolayer on the water surface is transferred onto a substrate, which is raised and dipped through the surface. From this, multi layers can be obtained in which constituent molecules are periodically arranged. The LB technique has attracted considerable interest in the fabrication of electrical and electronic devices. Many researchers have investigated the electrical properties of monolayer and multiplayer films. Dendrimers represent a new class of synthetic macromolecules characterized by a regularly branched treelike structure. Multiple branching yields a large number of chain ends that distinguish dendrimers from conventional star-like polymers and microgels. The azobenzene dendrimer is one of the dendritic macromolecules that include the azo-group exhibiting a photochromic character. Due to the presence of the charge transfer element of the azo-group and its rod-shaped structure, these compounds are expected to have potential interest in electronics and ptoelectronics, especially in nonlinear optics. In the present paper, we give pressure stimulation to organic thin films and detect the induced displacement current.
The thin films of $\alpha$-Sexithiophene($\alpha$-6T) were deposited by Organic Molecular Beam Deposition(OMBD) technique. The $\alpha$-6T was synthesized and Purified by the sublimation method The thin films of the $\alpha$-6T were deposited under various deposition conditions. The effects of deposition rate substrate temperature, and vacuum pressure on the formation of these films have been studied. The molecular orientations of $\alpha$-6T films were investigated with the polarized electronic absorption spectroscopy. The molecules in the $\alpha$-6T film deposited at a low deposition rate under a high vacuum were almost aligned Perpendicular to the substrate. The film deposited at an elevated substrate temperature(${\sim}90^{\circ}C$) showed higher conductivity than deposited at room temperature.
Rapid development in molecular biology and recent advancement in recombinant technology increase identification and commercialization of potential protein drugs. Traditional forms of administrations for the peptide and protein drugs often rely on their parenteral injection, since the bioavailability of these therapeutic agents is poor when administered nonparenterally. Tremendous efforts by numerous investigators in the world have been put to improve protein formulations and as a result, a few successful formulations have been developed including sustained-release human growth hormone. For a promising protein delivery technology, efficacy and safety are the first requirement to meet. However, these systems still require periodic injection and increase the incidence of patient compliance. The development of an oral dosage form that improves the absorption of peptide and especially protein drugs is the most desirable formulation but one of the greatest challenges in the pharmaceutical field. The major barriers to developing oral formulations for peptides and proteins are metabolic enzymes and impermeable mucosal tissues in the intestine. Furthermore, chemical and conformational instability of protein drugs is not a small issue in protein pharmaceuticals. Conventional pharmaceutical approaches to address these barriers, which have been successful with traditional organic drug molecules, have not been effective for peptide and protein formulations. It is likely that effective oral formulations for peptides and proteins will remain highly compound specific. A number of innovative oral drug delivery approaches have been recently developed, including the drug entrapment within small vesicles or their passage through the intestinal paracellular pathway. This review provides a summary of the novel approaches currently in progress in the protein oral delivery followed by factors affecting protein oral absorption.

It is generally accepted that ultra low dielectric interlayer dielectric materials (k < 2.2) will be necessary for ULSI advanced microelectronic devices after 2003, according to the International Technology Roadmap for Semiconductors (ITRS) 2000. A continuous reduction of dielectric constant is believed to be possible only by incorporating nanopores filled with air (k = 1.0) into electrically insulating matrices such as poly(methyl silsesquioxane) (PMSSQ). The nanopo.ous low dielectric films should have excellent material properties to survive severe mechanical stress conditions imposed during the advanced semiconductor processes such as chemical mechanical planarization process and multilayer fabrication. When air is incorporated into the films for lowering k, their mechanical strength has inevitably to be sacrificed. To minimize this effect, the nanopores are controlled to exist in the film as closed cells. The micromechanical properties of the nanoporous thin films are considered more seriously than ever, particularly for ultra low dielectric applications. In this study, three approaches were made to design and develop nanoporous low dielectric films with improved micromechanical properties: 1) wall density increase of nanoporous organosilicate film by copolymerization of carbon bridged comonomers; 2) incorporation of sacrificial phases with good miscibility; 3) selective surface modification by plasma treatment. Nanoporous low-k films were prepared with copolymerized PMSSQ and star-shaped sacrificial organic molecules, both of which were synthesized to control molecular weight and functionality. The nanoporous structures of the films were observed using field emission scanning electron microscopy, cross-sectional transmission electron microscopy, atomic force microscopy, and positronium annihilation lifetime spectroscopy(PALS). Micromechanical characterization was performed using a nanoindentor to measure hardness and modulus of the films.
Retention behavior of benzoic acid and its derivatives on XAD-2 in the alcoholic aqueous solution was investigated and separation was attempted. Retention was affected by the concentration and kinds of added organic solvents, the pH of the aqueous solution, the added $R_4N^+$ and the position and kinds of functional group in the sample molecules. Retention of sample acids in acidic conditions was due to mainly molecular adsorption on nonpolar XAD-2 surface and that in basic conditions was due to mainly ion-pair model. In these bases a mixed sample was separated in EtOH 20% aqueous solution at pH 8.50.
