  • A new hydrogen sulfide-oxidation bacterium, Thiobacillus sp. was isolated from waste coal mine water around Hawsun in Chunnam province. The isolate was motile gram-negative rod shape, formed spore and grew up to be aerobically facultative chemolithotroph by using energy released from the oxidation of reduced inorganic sulfur compounds. It could assimilate various kinds of organic compounds and grew well upon thiosulfate-supplemented basal medium. To the lelvel of 32 mM in thiosulfate concentration, thiosulfate in itself was utilized as energy source for growth. However, from those of the higher concentration than 32 mM, thiosulfate functioned specifically as the substrate inhibitor rather than as the energy source. It was found that the optimum thiosulfate concentration for growth was 32 mM. The G+C content of the DNA was 65.0 mol%. The isolate had 16 : 1 + 17$_{cyc}$, 16 : 0 as their major non-hydroxylated cellular fatty acids, 3-OH 12 : 0 as a hydroxylated fatty acid and also contained unidentified $C_{18}$ branched fatty acid. The ubiquinone system in the respiratory chain was Q-9. Based on the physiological and biochemical characteristics, the isolate was assigned to a novel species of the genus Thiobacillus sp. iw.

  • Sol-gel binder was prepared by hydrolysis and condensation reaction using boehmite sol and methyltrimethoxysilane as a function of aging-time. The coating slurry was composed of a plate-shape alumina in the sol-gel binder for the EPD process, in which particles dispersed in the slurry were deposited on the electrode under an electric field due to the surface charge. We studied the effects of three parameters: the content of boehmite, the aging time, and the applied voltage, on the physical, thermal, and electrical properties of the hybrid composite films by EPD. The amount of boehmite was 10 ~ 20 wt% and the aging time was 0.5 ~ 72, with a fixed amount of plate-shape alumina of 10 wt%. The condition of applied voltage was 5 ~ 30 V with a distance of 2 cm between the electrode during the EPD process. We confirmed that a structure of hybrid composite films of well-ordered plate alumina was deposited on the substrate when the film was prepared using a sol-gel binder composed of 15 wt% boehmite with 1 hr aging time and EPD at 10 V. The process shows a weight loss of 7% at $500^{\circ}C$ in TGA and a breakdown voltage of 8 kV at $87{\mu}m$.

  • Extraction and storage conditions of oleoresin were studied from root portion of peeled garlic, an waste of garlic industry. Extraction with ethanol and methanol showed an high solid yields of $27{\sim}37%$ at the temperature range of $30{\sim}50^{\circ}C$. Two hours of extraction were found to be economic because of no significant increase in furthur extraction. Storage of the oleoresin under anaerobic condition such as vaccum or nitrogen resulted in a less changes in pH, total acidity, color and thiosulfinate content, than those changes under aerobic condition. Most of the thiosulfinate was decreased for all conditions after 14 days of storage at $25^{\circ}C$. Glucose and sucrose were increased and most of organic acids were decreased during storage under nitrogen condition. Addition of ascorbic acid and cysteine into oleoresin retained the garlic flavor, effectively.

  • Despite the vast literature on the effects of root canal irrigants on the dentin characteristics, the precise effects of clinically relevant irrigation sequences remain unclear. In this review, we systematically dissect the role of different sequential irrigation approaches that are used in clinical endodontics. Using a systematic search strategy, we attempt to answer the question: 'Which irrigating sequence has the most deleterious effects on dentin structure and properties?' The effect of irrigants on the dentin composition and mechanical properties have been reviewed. A wide variety of concentrations, duration and techniques have been employed to characterize the effects of chemicals on dentin properties, thus making it impossible to draw guidelines or recommendations of irrigant sequences to be followed clinically. It was apparent that all the studied irrigation sequences potentially result in some deleterious effects on dentin such as decrease in the flexural strength, microhardness, modulus of elasticity and inorganic content and organic-inorganic ratio of the dentin. However, the literature still lacks comprehensive investigations to compare the deleterious effect of different irrigation sequences, using a wide variety of qualitative and quantitative methods. Such investigations are essential to make clinical recommendations and strategize efforts to minimize chemically-induced damage to dentin characteristics.

  • An investigation on the synthesis of aluminum citrate, one of the aluminum organic compounds, has been performed using aluminum chloride solutions as a starting material. For the synthesis of aluminum citrate, citric acid was added to aluminum solutions with the mole ratio of citric acid to aluminum to be 2.5 and aluminum citrate synthesized was also characterized in terms of chemical analysis, X-ray diffraction, particle size measurement and SEM analysis. As a result, it was found that the ratio of ethanol/Al solution more than 4.0 was required for the synthesis of aluminum citrate from aluminum solutions. Furthermore, the pH should be controlled to be more than 7.0 in order to obtain the recovery of aluminum citrate higher than 97%. From the chemical analysis of aluminum citrate synthesized in this work, the content of $NH_4$, Al and C was found to be 17.0, 4.01 and 25.7%, respectively. Accordingly, the aluminum citrate synthesized from aluminum solutions was confirmed to be $(NH_4)_5Al(C_6H_4O_7)_2{\cdot}2H_2O$.

  • The study aims to investigate and analyze actual situations of managing topsoil at forest development sites based on their types, in pursuit of conservation and effective use of national land. To do this, I selected target areas by deducting the typical types of forest development and analyzed the condition of soil at the target areas before and after development. In addition to this, I interviewed associated construction staffs to conduct study on present situations of topsoil management and find out its problems. I also surveyed of relevant experts, with the intention of seeking solutions. The results of the study have been shown that firstly, experts preferred collecting and recycling of topsoil as methods of improvement of soil conditions for plant growth. Secondly, the importance of topsoil has been well noticed and there were few construction sites using the methods. However, working and economical problems have disturbed carrying out these solutions. Thirdly, after constructions, organic matter and total-nitrogen content decreased in general which were necessary for plant growth in terms of soil conditions.

  • Biomass is well known for organic resources photosynthesized by carbon dioxide water in the air and thus it can be widely used in the form of energy and production for various kinds of materials. Through pyrolysis, biomass can be transformed into solid(biochar), liquid(bio-oil), and combustible gas on the different condition of temperature and heating rate. That's why biomass can be practically used to preprocess and produce a variety of elements. This work is to analyze the characteristics of slow pyrolysis of three different kinds of biomass extracted from Indonesia. They showed similar moisture content and combinations of combustible matters and had quite a large discrepancy in the ash among them like 2.1 & of Bagasse, 91% of PKS, and 20.9% of Paddy Straw, respectively. yield of biochar, solid form of the biomass, steadily decreased when the temperature went up and that of bio-oil the highest at the temperature of 500 degrees Celsius. At the same temperature range, PKS bio-oil showed 51.4 % of yield and Bagasse had 55.1% while it turned out that Paddy straw showed the lowest yield of 37.2%. The apparent density was also measured to figure out the density of each product from the pyrolysis experiments at the temperature of 500 degrees Celsius. The result was like these; the density of biochar was 0.17, the lowest, and that of Tree stem was 1.3 when mixed by an equal amount of biochar and bio-oil.

  • In order to solve the shortage of roughage supply for dairy farm in Korea, the mechanized model system for the production of winter cereal wrap silage in the fellow paddy field was developed in the previous studies. In this study, storage properties after long term storing of the winter cereal wrap silage were investigated. Also, the qualities of the wrap silage which was stored during 4 months were evaluated by sensory testings, analyzing chemical properties(moisture content, pH and organic acids) and investigating the increase of feeding value. The result of this study were summarized as follows; 1. After 300 hours storage, the acid level of the silage decreased slowly to 4.6 -4.8 pH. Also, the temperature was stabilized around 27-28$^{\circ}C$. The silage having below 5.0 pH is a desirable level for the most of good silage. 2. According to the sensory test and chemical property analyzation it was evaluated as the first class silage like a com silage. 3. Also, when the wrap silage are fed to the cattle, the cattle produced milk more 25% than that of conventional feed. 4. As an overall conclusion, winter cereal wrap silage in the fallow paddy field cm be one of the major roughage source in replacement of com and other conventional silage to dairy cattle in Korea.

  • This research focused on the investigation of runoff and nonpoint sources (NPS) pollution characteristics from small soil box plots treated by livestock waste composts. An indoor rainfall simulation was performed over the plots for 60 minutes. Simulated rainfall intensities were 32.4, 43.2, 50.3 and 57.1 mm/hr respectively. Slope of soil box plots was $10^{\circ}$ and $20^{\circ}$, respectively. Rainfall simulation replicated 5 times and the experiment was conducted every four days five times. As the slope of soil box increased, NPS pollution loads increased. And as rainfall intensity was increased from 32.4 to 57.1 mm/hr, NPS pollution loads gradually increased, too. Discharge of NPS pollution loads was the largest in the first simulation and thereafter decreased gradually. Discharged BOD load to the total applied load from $10^{\circ}$ plots, ranged 0.2 to 0.7 %, was 8.4 to 50.0 % lower than slope $20^{\circ}$ plots. When the application rate increased twice, the increase of pollution load was between 1.7~5.7 times. Analysis of Pearson's correlation coefficient showed that organic matter content in pig compost and NPS pollution loads were correlated well. While under liquid compost application, the correlation coefficients between them were not good. It was concluded that application of livestock resources need to consider long-term weather forecast and if necessary, NPS reduction measures must be preceded in order to reduce NPS pollution discharge.

  • Novel non-conjugated blue light-emitting copolymers containing perylene and triazine moieties as light emitting and electron transporting units, respectively in the polymer side chain were synthesized. The resulting copolymers were soluble in most organic solvents such as chlorobenzene, THF, chloroform and benzene. The single-layered electroluminescence (EL) device consisting of indium tin oxide (ITO) /copolymer/aluminium (Al) exhibited a maximum external quantum efficiency ($0.003\%$) and a good carrier balance when the triazine content was $30\%$. In particular, the device emitted blue light (479 nm) corresponding to the emission of perylene moiety. The drive voltage was observed at 5 V and the CIE coordinate was x=0.16, y=0.17.
