The Effects of Hydrogen Peroxide Pretreatment on Rice Straw Fermentation for Feed (볏짚 발효사료 제조시 과산화수소 전처리 효과)

  • Pleurotus florida with high cellulase activity as well as lignin degradability was selected out among strains for fermentation of the rice straw to improve the nutritive value. When the rice straw was fermented by P. florida, the contents of hemicellulose, cellulose and lignin were decreased to 22.5%, 11.4% and 28.1%, respectively, whereas the contents of rice straw fermented after pretreatment with $H_2O_2$ or alkaline hydrogen peroxide were decreased much in the lower concentration. The content of T-N (total-nitrogen) and crude fat was increased with the longer fermentation period. The amino acid content of rice straw fermented by P. florida in 30 days was increased to 28.9% and 35.1% as the rice straw was fermented after pretreatment without and with 4% $H_2O_2$, respectively. The crystalline intensity of rice straw was decreased by pretreatment with 4% $H_2O_2$ and fermentation by P. florida. However, the crystall intensity was increased by treatment with alkaline hydrogen peroxide and the more when the straw was washed after the treatment. When the rice straw was fermented by P. florida for 30 days, the in vitro organic matter digestibility was increased up to 6% of $H_2O_2$ pretreatment.

Geographical Distribution and Habitat Characteristics of Boehmeria in South Korea (남한 모시풀속 식물의 지리적 분포와 자생지 특성)

  • This study was carried out to investigate the distribution and habitat characteristics of Boehmeria for utilization and conservation plan of natural agro-plant resources in South Korea. The native habitat of B. longispica Steud., B. platanifolia Fr. et Sav., B. spicata Thunb., and B. tricuspis var. unicuspis Mak. were distributed nearly all areas in South Korea. B. nivea Gaudich. was distributed south of Chungnam but B. pannosa Nak. et Sat. and B. sieboldiana Bl. were partially distributed toward the southern part in South Korea. The average number of plant species growing with Boehmeria in natural habitat was found 124.9 species and Artemisia princeps var. orientalis Hara showed the highest importance value among neighbor species. B. platanifolia Fr. et Sav. and B. spicata Thunb. were the most commonly neighbor species growing with Boehmeria in rate of 49%. Average yearly precipitation and temperature of habitat for Boehmeria were 1100 mm to 1390 mm and $11.3^{\circ}C\;to\;13.7^{\circ}C$ respectively. Soil characteristics of habitat for Boehmeria. were that pH was 5.3 to 7.2 and B. nivea Gaudich. was higher content of organic matter than the other Boehmeria. Content of K and Na were similar among Boehmeria. $P_2O_5$, Ca and Mg were shown a little difference among seven species.

Effects of Barley Straw Application on Soil Physico-Chemical Properties and Nutrient Uptake in Rice Paddy Field of Double Cropping (벼 2모작 논에서 보릿짚 시용이 토양이화학성 및 양분흡수에 미치는 영향)

  • This experiment was carried out to investigate the effects of amount of nitrogen application with the barley straw application on the changes in soil physical and chemical properties. nutrient uptake and percentage recovery of chemical fertilizer N in the rice plant from 1997 to 1998. The soil physical properties, such as bulk density, hardness, porosity and gaseous phase were improved by barley straw application. There was also improvement or increment in the soil chemical properties, such as pH, organic matter, T-C. T-N, available $SiO_2$, exchangeable K and cation exchange capacity, but decrease in available $P_2O_5$. The $Fe^{+{+}}$ content in soil after barley straw application was high from tillering stage to panicle forming stage, but becoming lowered toward the heading stage, while $Mn^{+{+}}$ content was increased. N uptake with barley straw application was increased in the N $126kg\;ha^{-1}$ plot, but decreased in the N $141kg\;ha^{-1}$ plot. The uptake of fertilized N was continued longer in barley straw application than none-application plot. Percentage recovery of chemical fertilizer N in rice straw was around 1% at tillering stage, but was highly increasing till maximum tillering stage, while the recovery was generally low in barley straw application. Meanwhile, fertilizer P uptake in barley straw application was high, but potassium uptake was low at all different levels of N application.

Effect of Band Spotty Fertilization on the Yield and Growth of Peanut(Arachis hypogaea L.) in Plastic Film Mulching Cultivation (비닐피복 땅콩 재배시 생육 및 수량에 미치는 국소시비 효과)

  • This study was carried out to establish low-input fertilization and seeding technique using the simultaneous with seeding and fertilizer application machine and band spotty applicator which were manufactured for experiment during cultivation of mulching for peanut(Arachis hypogaea L.). The labor hour for seeding by simultaneous with seeding and fertilizing machine was appeared over 90% reduction effect compared with control plot($17.3hr\;10a^{-1}$). In band spotty fertilization plots, the emergence date was delayed about 4 days and the seedling stand rate was decreased 11~18% compared with control plot(man power). The content of total nitrogen of soil after experiment was increased while the contents of organic matter, available phosphate and exchangeable potassium were decreased than before experiment. The content of nitrogen forming nitrate was increased in band spotty fertilization(BSF) plots by increasing the amount of applied fertilizer from early growth stage till the middle growth stage. Growth rate was increased in band spotty fertilization plots and the absorbed amount of phosphate and potassium for peanut were increased in 70% band spotty fertilization plot compared with control plot. Yield of peanut was increased 70% in band spotty fertilization plot due to high pod kernel ratio and ripened pod rate compared with control plot($3,150kg\;ha^{-1}$). It was found that 70% band spotty fertilization was more effective as fertilization method to reduce both environmental pollution and chemical nitrogen fertilizer in plastic film mulching cultivation of peanut.

Characteristic components of sugar-fed honey compared to natural honey (설탕 사양꿀의 특이 성분 분석)

  • We investigated and compared certain chemical properties of Korean natural honey and sugar-fed honey for assessing quality characteristics. The specification component was extracted using an organic solvent, and a single substance was isolated and identified as (E)-2-decenedioic acid. The content of (E)-2-decenedioic acid was $121{\pm}5.9mg/100g$ in sugar cane-fed honey and $127{\pm}4.5mg/100g$ in sugar beet-fed honey. Natural acacia, chestnut, and multi-floral honey contain $13{\pm}0.9$, $17{\pm}0.6$, and $13{\pm}1.3mg/100g$ of honey, respectively. Therefore, (E)-2-decenedioic acid was a major component of sugar-fed honey, however, it occurred in trace amounts in natural honey. We conclude that natural and sugar-fed honey can be distinguished by determining the (E)-2-decenedioic acid content.

Effect of Red Pepper Varieties on the Microflora, Enzyme Activities and Taste Components of Traditional Kochujang during Fermentation (고추품종을 달리한 전통식 고추장의 숙성중 미생물, 효소활성 및 맛성분의 변화)

  • Microbial counts, enzyme activities and taste components of traditional kochujangs prepared with the powders from 4 different varieties of red pepper, were investigated during 90 days fermentation for the industrial production of traditional kochujang. The viable cell counts of anaerobic bacteria in kochujangs did not change remarkably during fermentation, however, aerobic bacterial counts showed a rapid increase up to 90 days of aging. The yeasts in all kochujang samples increased until 60 days of aging and than decreased. After 90 days of aging, the count of aerobic bacteria in Kumtop kochujang was higher than those of others. The activities of liquefying amylase decreased during the aging, but those of saccharogenic amylase increased at 60 days of aging. The activities of neutral protease were higher than those of acidic protease, and increased during the middle and last period of aging. The major free sugars of kochujang were maltose and glucose, and their contents were higher in Hongkwang kochujang. The major organic acids of kochujang were succinic, formic and citric acid, followed by lactic acid. Succinic acid content in kochujang decreased during fermentation, whereas formic and citirc acids were increased. The major free amino acids were serine, proline, glutamic acid, aspartic acid and alanine. Kumtop kochujang contained the highest amount of total free amino acids. Among the nucleotides and related components in kochujang, cytidine-5-monophosphate was the most abundant component at the begining of aging period, while hypoxanthine increased remarkably during fermentation. Hanwang kochujang was higher in the content of nucleotides than others. Capsaicin contents of kochujang decreased during aging and those of Jangter kochujang was higher than that of others. Sensory evaluation showed that Jangter kochujang was significantly better than Kumtop kochujang in overall acceptability, but there were no appreciable differences in color and flavor.

Effects of Felling of Damaged Tree of Pine Wilt Disease on Soil Respiration in Pinus densiflora Stands (소나무재선충병 피해목 벌채가 토양호흡에 미치는 영향)

  • The objectives of this study was to obtain the basic information for reasonable management of soil ecosystem damaged by pine wilt disease. Soil temperature and moisture content were $15.3{^{\circ}C}$ and 11.5% at whole-cut site, $14.4{^{\circ}C}$ and 13.5% at partial-cut site, and $13.7{^{\circ}C}$ and 14.8% at control site, respectively. The content of soil organic matter throughout the study period ranged from 2.11 to 2.64% at whole-cut site, 2.26 to 3.33% at partial-cut site, and 2.27 to 3.10% at control. Soil respiration rates showed seasonal fluctuations increasing in summer, which showed positive correlations between soil respiration and soil temperature. Average soil respiration were 0.24, 0.36 and $0.32gCO_{2}/m^{2}/hr$ at whole-cut site, partial-cut site, and control, respectively. $Q_{10}$ values ranged from 2.39 to 2.68 at Pinus densiflora stands damaged by pine wilt disease. Annual soil respiration rate at whole-cut site, partial-cut site and control were 8.1, 15.6 and $14.6tCO_{2}/ha/yr$, respectively.

Comparison of Growth and Contents of Active Ingredients of Angelica gigas Nakai under Different Cultivation Areas (재배지 환경에 따른 참당귀 생육 및 지표성분 함량 비교)

  • Angelica gigas Nakai (Korean danggui), a member of the Umbelliferae family, is a Korean traditional medicinal plant whose roots have been used for treating gynecological diseases. In this study, the growth characteristics and decursin contents of Angelica gigas Nakai were compared according to the difference of cultivation area. As a result, the root diameter of A. gigas Nakai was the highest in the Duil-ri, and the number of the root of A. gigas was the highest in Topdong-ri. The fresh weight and dry weight of Angelica gigas Nakai was the highest in the Topdong-ri. The soil properties of cultivation area was Sandy Clay Loam and the content of organic matter was the highest in Topdong-ri. The total content of decursin was 5.31% the highest in Duil-ri. And 4.96% in Namhoeryong-ri, 4.41% in Kosun-ri, 4.25% in topdon-ri, 3.96% in Gugok-ri, and 3.64% in Gongjeon-ri was accumulated.

Quality Characteristics of Candy Products Added with Hot-Water Extracts of Korean Mountain Ginsengs (장뇌삼 열수추출액 함유 캔디제품의 품질특성)

  • This study was conducted to investigate the quality characteristics of candy products added with hot-water extract of korean mountain ginsengs as the useful food materials. Water content of the products were $0.41{\sim}0.88\%$. Candy product with $5\%$ addition showed the highest content($87.5\%$) in Brix. pH ranges of the products were $5.50{\sim}5.56$. In terms of Hunters color value, L value was lower in $10\%$ candy product(56.40) than that of other products, while a and b value were increased in $10\%$ candy product. Sucrose was the major free sugar of candy products, and major organic acids were malic, tartaric and citric acid. Free amino acids were predominantly arginine, serine, aspartic acid and proline. The major minerals were K, Mn, Na and Mg. Antioxidant activity of candy products were about $64.28{\sim}70.88\%$ compared to $96.81\%$ of BHA(200 ppm). Result of sensory evaluation of $10\%$ candy products gained higher sensory score in overall acceptance, compared to the other products.

Comparison of the content of bioactive substances and antioxidative activity between conventionally and organically cultivated brown rice (Oryza sativa L.) (관행 및 유기재배 현미의 생리활성 성분의 함량 및 항산화활성 비교)

  • The content of bioactive substances and antioxidative activity in conventionally grown brown rice (CGBR) and organically grown brown rice (OGBR) were compared. Minerals (mg/100 g) such as magnesium (OGBR, $168.59{\pm}2.62$; CGBR, $121.43{\pm}2.22$), copper (OGBR, $0.50{\pm}0.06$; CGBR, $0.41{\pm}0.05$), and manganese (OGBR, $4.70{\pm}0.04$; CGBR, $2.49{\pm}0.02$) were higher in OGBR than in CGBR (p<0.05). In addition, levels of (${\mu}g/100g$) vitamins B2 (OGBR, $27.22{\pm}2.56$; CGBR, $22.12{\pm}2.24$) and B6 (OGBR, $46.32{\pm}2.66$; CGBR, $39.91{\pm}3.32$) were higher in OGBR than in CGBR (p<0.05). The contents (mg/100 g) of ${\beta}$-sitosterol (OGBR, $27.40{\pm}2.79$; CGBR, $24.75{\pm}1.06$), total phenolic (OGBR, $6.72{\pm}0.02$; CGBR, $6.64{\pm}0.02$), and ferulic acid (OGBR, $1.75{\pm}0.45$; CGBR, $1.11{\pm}0.14$) as well as the antioxidative activity (OGBR, $53.09{\pm}1.90%$; CGBR, $48.29{\pm}3.38%$) evaluated using 1,1-diphenyl-2-picrylhydrazyl (DPPH) radical-scavenging assay were higher in OGBR than in CGBR, although no significant differences between samples were observed. In comparison to the control group, brown rice samples significantly inhibited cholesteryl ester hydroperoxide formation in rat plasma subjected to copper ion-induced lipid peroxidation. The inhibitory effect of OGBR was higher than that of CGBR. These results indicate that OGBR showed higher levels of bioactive substances and enhanced antioxidative activity than CGBR, although the differences were not statistically significant.
