  • The purpose of this study was to measure the changes in soil properties and forest vegetation after surface fire, which had occured on June 5, 1983 in Mt. Gwanag, Kyunggi-do. Moisture content, organic matter and acidity of soil increased just after the fire and then dropped down up to those of unfired areas as time goes. Also total nitrogen, available phosphorous exchangeable base had the similar trend to moisture, organic matter and acidity. Most of the exchangeable bases in surface soil except for sodium were higher than those in sub-soil. No changes in soil texture by the fire were found. Increasers, decreasers, invaders and neutral species could be classified according to the relative importance value of each species. Species diversity was reduced just after the fire and increased gradually afterward. Diversity in the southeast slope was higher than that in the southwest slope. Due to the fire, evenness of woody plants decreased continuously while that of herbs increased. Species similarity was shown greater at fired areas than at unfired areas.

  • In this study, the removal characteristic of ammonia nitrogen and behavior of nitrogen was investigated using Leclercia adecarboxylata, which was derived from the culture contaminated by ammonia nitrogen of high concentration. The method of ammonia nitrogen removal was not biological nitrification and denitrification but elimination of nutrient salt with internal synthesis of microorganisms which use ammonia nitrogen as substrate. L. adecarboxylata(one of ammonia synthesis microorganisms) was highly activated and showed the most high removal efficiency in free salt condition but the removal efficiency decreased badly in salt concentration of more than 4%. About 80 mg/L of $NH_3-N$ was mostly removed within 20 hours and 500 mg/L of $NH_3-N$ showed less then removal efficiency of 50% because carbon source was not enough. However, ammonium nitrogen concentration was decreased again when the carbon source was inserted additionally thus, ammonium nitrogen removal efficiency by L. adecarboxylata, was related to amount of carbon source. pH decreased from 8.0 to 6.36 according to growth of L. adecarboxylata. Concentration of nitrite nitrogen and nitrate nitrogen did not increase and TKN concentration showed no variation while ammonia nitrogen was removed by L. adecarboxylata. In addition to, when content of protein in organic nitrogen was measured, protein was not detected at the beginning of microorganism synthesis but protein of 193.1 mg/L was detected after 48 hours. Hence, ammonium nitrogen was not decomposed as nitrate nitrogen and nitrite nitrogen but synthesized by L. adecarboxylata, which has excellent ability of nitrogen synthesis and can threat ammonia nitrogen of high concentration in wastewater.

  • The study was carried out to evaluate characteristics of inorganic phosphate fractions in cultivating soil with paper mill sludge comport(PMSC). The experiment were conducted in cultivating corn by a pot test. The place of the pot test was a plastic house. The pot size was 1/5000a and PMSC was added at rates of 0, 30, and 100 Mg/ha. The pot experiment was divided to two treatments, one in which corn was cultivated and the other which was not. The items of measurement was pH and inorganic phosphate fractions which were determined for the pot tests for 80 days. The results can be concluded as follows, pH increased depending on the higher rates of PMSC application to the soil during the Pot tests, because calcium content was high and contents of nutrient were high. When the application rates of PMSC were increased, Saloid-P and Fe-P decreased, while Al-P and Ca-P in soil increased during the pot tests. According to the increase of PMSC application rates, the growth and the yield of com significantly increased Such results seem to be associated with the higher nutrient level from PMSC application. Although uptake of phosphorus in corn decreased in the corn with increased application of the PMSC, phosphate deficiency didn't appear in the pot test.

  • The study on the ripening of leather waste sludge was performed to vemistabilize the sludge effectively using a laboratory scale darkened wood box reactor ($10{\times}10{\times}20cm$). The acceptable feed conditions for earthworm of Eh, alkalinity were obtained in the 30th and 35th days, respectively. The value of pH was gradually decreased from 7.8 to 7.1 through the ripening time. The contents of heavy metals of the ripened sludge were estimated as lower levels compared to the other regulatory standards for compost. After the ripening time for 50days, the physico-chemical properties of the sludge were estimated as pH 7.1, water content 72%, redox potential 85mV, electrolytic conductivity $2,620{\mu}mhos/cm$ and alkalinity 450 ppm as $CaCO_3$, respectively. In the ripened sludge, survival rate of the earthworms for 50 days was about 75%, and the live weight increase rate was about 230% at the temperature range of $20{\sim}25^{\circ}C$. Moreover, hatching rate of the earthworm cocoons was about 87% and the highest value was obtained in the 20~30th days. From the above results, it was evaluated that leather waste sludge could be vermistabilized effectively by earthworms, when the sludge was ripened during 50 days.

  • Three types of aeration system were installed in experimental liquid fertilization tanks to investigate the change of characteristics of pig slurry used as a raw material for making livestock liquid fertilizer. The aeration systems of the reaction tanks were composed of three major part: the air suppling part (blower), the air pipe part, and the air diffuser part. In the first tank (reactor A), the air was supplied from the bottom of the reaction tank through air pipe system connecting air diffuser with commercial ordinary blower. In the second tank (reactor B), the air diffuser was located 10cm above the bottom of the reactor. In the third tank (reactor C), the pure air was supplied with circulating pjg slurry. The oxygen content of pure air was about 90%. The pure air was mixed with pig slurry by mechanically in the air suppling part (blower) and the air pipe part. The agitation effect was highest in the reactor C than other reactors. The contents of SS, COD, T-N and T-P of each samples collected at middle part of all reactors were 8,500, 4,188, 694 and 422mg/L; 9,000, 4,247, 813 and 356mg/L; 8,667, 6,910, 973 and 269mg/L, respectively.

  • 'Chuhwangbae' pears (Pyrus pyrifolia Nakai) were investigated on how types of paper bag and harvesting dates influenced on skin blackening before harvest as well as fruit quality after harvest. Experiments included four different types of paper bags (NP/YP, GP/YP, NP/BP, and NP/RP) and five different harvesting dates [160, 170, 180, 190, and 200 days after full bloom (DAFB)]. NP/YP and GP/YP indicated for newspaper- and gray paper-outer bag, respectively, with yellow paper-inner bag of the both. NP/BP and NP/RP indicated for newspaper-outer bag of the both with black paper- and red paper-inner bag, respectively. The NP/YP (newspaper/yellow paper) showed high absorbance and air and water vapor permeability in the bags, while the NP/RP (newspaper/red paper) resulted in poor physical properties in the bags. Fruit enclosed with NP/YP resulted in the absence of skin blackening, but fruit with NP/RP bags had the highest skin blackening (12.7%). Occurrence of skin blackening was concentrated on the middle and calyx end-part of fruit region. NP/RP bag treatment was likely to increase fruit weight, firmness, titratable acidity, and fruit surface color. Harvest at high relative humidity in air increased skin blackening of fruit. Later fruit harvest, such as 190 and 200 DAFB, increased skin blackening, fruit weight, and sugar content while decreasing fruit firmness and titratable acidity.

  • The quality of fermented dropwort extract (FDE) and fermented dropwort vinegar (FDV) was assessed for free sugar, organic acid and free and total amino acid content. Major organic acids were lactic acid in FDE and acetic acid in FDV. Free sugars in FDE were fructose and glucose, and those in FDV were fructose, sucrose, and maltose. Aspartic acid was the major free amino acid in both FDE and FDV. Additionally, the main free amino acids in FDE were alanine and ${\gamma}$-amino-n-butyric acid (GABA), while those in FDV were arginine and valine. Moreover, to investigate the protective effects of FDE and FDV against oxidative stress induced by t-BHP and $H_2O_2$, C6 cells were treated with FDE or FDV prior to inducing the oxidative damage. FDE and FDV inhibited cell death significantly in a dose-dependent manner. These data imply that FDE and FDV may be effective in neuronal cell protection against oxidative damage.

  • This study was performed to identify detailed informations on the nonvolatile flavor of Chinese quince fruits, Chaenomeles sinensis koehne. About 72% of the free amino acids were shown to be valine, asparagine, ${\gamma}-aminobutyric\;acid$, aspartic acid and serine. Arginine, tyrosine, methionine and tryptophan were not present. Glutamic acid and glutamine as a amino acid for peptides were the major components, whereas cysteic acid, methionine sulfone and tryptophan were not detected. The nucleotides attained were composed of cytosine, uridine-5'-monophosphate and cytidine-5'-monophosphate, and these were proved to be a very small quantity. Guanosine-5'-monophosphate, inosine-5'-monophosphate and adenosine-5'-monophosphate were not present. The major sugars were shown to be glucose, sorbose, sucrose and fructose. Fructose was the most abundant one among them. A total of 11 organic acids were identified by capillary gas chromatography and capillary gas chromatography-mass spectrometry. The major components identified were tartaric acid and α-ketoglutaric acid. The total content of vitamin C determined was 386.6mg%, and those of ascorbic, dehydroascorbic, and 2, 3-diketo-L-gulonic acid were 28.8mg%, 154.5mg% and 197.3mg%, respectively. Calcium and phosphorus were the major components, while heavy metals such as cadmium, copper and lead were determined to be a small amount. In the result of organoleptic test on the natural and synthetic extract of Chinese quince fruits, the principal taste components consisted of free amino acids, sugars, organic acids, vitamin C and minerals. Five groups mentioned would have a favorable influence upon the taste of fresh Chinese quince fruits.
