  • Objectives: The aim of this study was to evaluate the relationship between depressive symptoms and oral health status in Korean middle-aged women. Methods: We analyzed data from the sixth Korea National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey (KNHANES VI). The final sample consisted of 2,691 adults aged 40-64 years. The Chi-squared test was used to assess the rate of depressive symptoms, oral health status, and relationship between oral health status and depressive symptoms. Moreover, logistic regression analysis was used to examine the association between depressive symptoms and oral health status. Data were analyzed using SPSS 20.0 program. Results: Overall, 15.1% of subjects experienced depressive symptoms. The rate of depressive symptoms in self-aware oral health, toothache, and mastication problem groups were 19.6%, 19.9%, and 25.3%, respectively. Compared to other groups, the likelihood (odds ratio) of having depressive symptoms was 1.47 (95% confidence interval [CI] : 1.16-1.88), 1.58 (95% CI: 1.22-2.04), and 1.73 (95% CI: 1.32-2.28) higher in self-aware bad oral health, toothache, and mastication problem groups, respectively. Conclusions: We found an association between depressive symptoms and oral health status. Thus, oral health status should be evaluated as a potential risk factor for depressive symptoms.

  • Purpose: This study investigated factors influencing the xerostomia symptoms in the patients with temporomandibular disorders (TMDs). Methods: Eighty-six participants over the age of twenty were randomly enrolled from patients with TMDs. The patients were diagnosed by Diagnostic Criteria-TMD (DC-TMD). Intensity of the pain and level of stress of the patients were recorded using TMD pain visual analogue scale (VAS) and stress VAS, respectively. The Symptom Checklist-90-Revised (SCL-90R), dry mouth symptom questionnaire, unstimulated salivary flow rate (USFR) and oral moisture were measured. Results: The patients who had above the mean of the TMD pain VAS had significantly higher scores on the stress VAS, subjective dry mouth symptoms and T-score of somatization. The patients who suffered from pain more than three months had significantly higher TMD pain VAS, subjective dry mouth symptoms and T-score of somatization. There were no significant differences in xerostomic symptoms according to the diagnosis of TMDs. Moreover, TMD pain VAS and the stress VAS did not correlated to USFR and oral moisture. Conclusions: The level of individuals' TMD pain and stress significantly affect their subjective dry mouth symptoms, however, it did not affect USFR and oral moisture.

Regarding the related factors of subjective oral symptoms experience of obesity adolescents, the factors were identified to be significantly higher in high school (OR=1.72) compared to middle school, learning achievement was higher in middle (OR=1.09) and lower (OR=1.31) compared to high, economic status was higher in lower (OR=1.09) compared to high, sealant experience (OR=1.10) and scaling experiences (OR=1.12) responded no were higher compared to responded yes, smoking experiences responded yes(OR=1.08) were higher compared to responded no, sweet drink (OR=1.14) and fastfood (OR=1.13) consumption were higher in consumption compared to non-consumption and females (OR=0.46) were higher than males. Oral symptoms experience were lower that father and mother's level of education were under high school graduation (OR=0.86) compared to unknown, economic status was in case of middle (OR=0.93) compared to high, tooth brushing was lower in under 1 time (OR=0.76), 2 times (OR=0.61) compared to more than 3 times, vigorous physical activities responded no (OR=0.75) were lower, compared to yes, vegetable consumption was lower in non-consumption (OR=0.68) compared to consumption. Conclusions: Subjective oral symptoms experiences were identified higher in obesity adolescents than non-obesity adolescents. It would be useful to use the results of this study to reduce oral symptoms and necessary to develop a program system considering characteristics of obesity adolescents.

The research comprised three questions relating to subjective oral symptoms, an occupational stress measurement tool and an oral health impact factor which was composed of questions. The data was analysed using t-test, one-way ANOVA, Pearson correlation and path analysis in Amos. Results : Occupational stress had a positive correlation to drinking frequency, Oral symptoms had a negative correlation. And drinking frequency, smoking amount and occupational stress had a positive correlation to oral symptoms. It denoted that drinking frequency, occupational stress and oral symptoms had a negative correlation to OHIP. The path model had an excellent goodness of fit (p=0.07, namely p>0.05). Five 'goodness-of-fit indices' of the model were all above 0.9: GFI=0.987, AGFI=0.952, NFI=0.902, IFI=0.939, CFI=0.934), and its RMSEA was 0.045. Occupational stress and oral symptoms had a firsthand impact on OHIP. In addition, it affected OHIP through the parameters of oral symptoms. Occupational stress exercised a firsthand influence on drinking frequency, drinking frequency exercised a firsthand influence on smoking amount. Methods: Data of 65,528 adolescents were derived from the twelfth Korea youth risk behavior web-based survey, which was conducted from 1st June 2016 to 30th June 2016. Sociodemographic factors, dietary habit, and oral health behavior were collected as independent variables. The subjective oral symptoms were used as a dependent variable. The chi-square test and logistic regression analysis were performed to identify the correlation between dental caries and the other variables. Results: A multiple logistic regression analysis revealed that subjective oral symptoms were correlated with sex, age, subjective economic status, soft drink consumption, sweet drink consumption, tooth brushing frequency and dental sealant experience. Conclusions: Since the intake of soft drink adversely effects subjectively perceived oral symptoms in Korean adolescents, oral health education should include information on the pH levels of food and beverages including carbonated drinks, the effects of sugar on the teeth, and precautions to preventing tooth damage.
