  • Stroke is the second cause of death worldwide, although the survival period is increasing after the occurrence of stroke, severe physical disability is caused with aftereffect. Oral inflammation is not limited to the oral cavity, it can cause malignant changes in other tissues and organs. In previous studies, we confirmed the relationship between tooth loss and stroke due to periodontal inflammation. The purpose of this study was to investigate the relationship between oral health and stroke such as oral hygiene behavior, tooth loss and periodontal disease among Korean adults over 40 years of age. This study was analyzed using the 6th Korea National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey (KNHANES) data. A total of 3,389 adults over 40 years of age were analyzed as final subjects. Socioeconomic statuses and oral health status was analyzed using a complex sample analysis technique. Logistic regression was used to analyze the relationship of oral health and stroke, and 95% confidence intervals were computed using SPSS. When the prevalence of stroke according to oral hygiene behavior was checked, the prevalence of strokes was lower in subjects who had a lot of brushings per day and subjects who used oral hygiene products (p<0.05). The risk of stroke was 2.17 times (95% confidence interval, 1.43~3.28) higher in the group with less than 19 remaining teeth, but it was not statistically significant as a result of adjusting for age and sex, income level, education level, drinking and smoking (p>0.05). Loss of teeth was found to be associated with the risk factor of stroke. Therefore, loss of teeth due to periodontal disease is an additional issue that should be considered as a risk factor for stroke.

  • Objectives: This study confirms the current status of visiting oral health-care services for the elderly to draw policy implications for revitalization of the visiting oral health care services in the future. Methods: First, a survey was conducted on health centers about the current status of the elderly visiting oral health-care service and how to revitalize it. Next, the number of oral hygiene services provided to the elderly was checked in the long-term care insurance system. Results: Oral health education (100%) was the most common practice in visiting oral health-care service for the elderly, and the most difficult thing in providing services was the lack of dental hygienists (38.9%). The status of oral health-care services in the long-term care insurance system for elderly revealed that the total number of service claims has been confirmed to be zero since the introduction of the system. Conclusions: Despite the existence of a system that provides elderly visiting oral healthcare services, to revitalize it, the law must be amended to secure a dental hygienist as the main agent of the activity and to further take responsibility for autonomous authority and performance.

  • Objectives: This study aimed to understand the effect of factors, possibilities, and desires on oral examination experience behavior of the elderly using raw data from the 2017 Community Health Survey. Methods: Hierarchical logistic regression analysis, an analysis method that controls the input order of a series of independent variables, was performed for 67,835 senior citizens aged 65 and older. Results: In terms of predisposing factors-in women, the higher the level of education, the higher the oral examination practice rate, and the lower the oral examination practice rate in divorce and bereavement among those aged 75 years or older. Regarding enabling factors, the lower the income rating, the higher the oral examination experience rate in religious and social participants as well as, leisure and charity participants, and the lower the oral examination experience rate in the natural environment. Regarding the need factors, the oral examination practice rate was high when the subjective oral health level was recognized as good. Conclusions: As a result, Anderson's model confirmed that various factors affect oral examination experience behavior, and institutional support for policy consensus is needed to promote oral examination experience behavior in older people in various directions.

The subjects in this study were 363 college students. Out of the selected students, 174 were health-related majors, and 189 weren't. After a survey was conducted, the collected data were analyzed for the purpose of comparison, and the following findings were given: 1. Concerning daily mean toothbrushing frequency, the largest number of the male students who accounted for 55.2 percent brushed their teeth once a day on average, and the greatest number of the female students who represented 52.9 percent did that twice a day. As for the influence of their major, the largest group of the health-related majors who numbered 89(51.1%) brushed their teeth twice a day, and the greatest group of the health-unrelated majors who numbered 93(49.2%) did that once a day. The gaps between them were statistically significant(p<0.05). 2. As to the length of toothbrushing time by gender, it took more than two or three minutes for the largest groups of the male and female students that respectively numbered 96(76.8%) and 184(77.3%) to do toothbrushing(p<0.01). The greatest groups of the male and female students that respectively numbered 72(57.6%) and 183(76.9%) brushed their teeth after meals. 3. In regard to oral hygiene supplies, the largest groups of the health-related and health-unrelated majors that respectively numbered 78(44.8%) and 115(60.8%) had chewing gum and candy with them. As to the use of oral hygiene supplies, 99 health-related majors(56.9%) and 133 health-unrelated majors(70.4%) didn't put oral hygiene supplies to use. Thus, the use of oral hygiene supplies was statistically less common among the health-unrelated majors, and the gap between the two was significant(p<0.01). 4. As for health-related concern by gender, the largest group of the male students that numbered 56(44.8%) showed the most interest in preventing dental caries, and the greatest group of the female students that numbered 103(43.3%) were most concerned about tooth whitening. The gap between the male and female students was statistically significant(p<0.05), but the track of their major made no statistically significant difference to that. 5. Regarding the experience and awareness of scaling, the largest number of the students never got their teeth scaled regardless of gender and major, and the greatest group didn't care about scaling irrespective of gender and major, either, though they considered it advisable to do.

Methods : Subjects were 151 psychiatric patients who filled out the structured questionnaire. The data were analyzed for independent t-test, one-way ANOVA and hierarchical multiple regression by using SPSS Win Program 18.0 version. Higher DMFT index included no tooth brushing after breakfast(p=0.045), wrong tooth brushing method(p<0.001). Chewing discomfort(p=0.027) and denture(p=0.027) were closely related to higher DMFT index. Bread(p=0.033) and snack(p<0.001) increased DMFT index. Factors affecting oral health status were age, denture, snack and bread. The explanation power of the final model was 29.4%. Conclusions : Dietary control for the psychiatric patients is very important to prevent dental caries. Tooth brushing and use of oral hygiene devices can improve good oral health care.
